Gang-Seok (Kim Ji-Suk) struggles under the debt caused by his mother's hospitalization. He lives in room #303 at a hostel. Ha-Jin (Jung So-Min) also struggles to make ends meet. She works for a toy company that is going through financial difficulties. Gang-Seok and Ha-Jin meet and fall in love. Ha-Jin's hopes for a better life, but, currently, she lives in room #203 at the hostel.

After a time in Seoul and failing to establish herself, the weight of expectations to succeed and her increasingly desperate situation skewed her judgment on love and relationship. She was totally devastated by disillusionment upon disclosure of his equally desperate situation, and decided to leave for mom and the hometown.

He sold the car and used it to give her the apartment as a gift, as something he wanted to do for her, as thanks for her being part of his life, and as encouragement and support for her to stay in Seoul.

At the last moment, the slippers reminded her how he had been there for her, and everything about him pulled together to awaken her up to what is real and important to her. As she returned to the terminal, she saw the news and rushed back to the hostel.

He died (whether then, or after two years of her attending to him is open to viewer interpretation), and she has gotten a better grasp at managing life. As a tribute to him, she now went and opened the gift. She wanted a window to see the sun as a gesture of life's fairness. That window doesn't quite seem to give her a good view of the sun shared by everyone, but does give her the exclusive view of the star that is him (thus the title). They (she and the star as him) are together on first snow and completes a popular myth has it that when lovers are together on first snow, dreams will come true.

In short, she had no use and no need for the apartment and its materialistic significance because she has never been, by nature, materialistic, and she was there to pay tribute to him and his gesture of kindness by finally accepting and "opening" the gift.

The last scene is ripe with symbolism. Him (the star), her, a gift that remains after death, first snow, fulfilled promise (shoes), a small windows with an exclusive of a designated and especially bright star, eternal love, support and following.
