PS All Due Respect, I'm not in this field as apparently Jay is, and couldn't figure out, was he shedding a Good light on the drama or,, tearing it down? All I can say is, Yes, there are men like this in that world....and They Do take care of their women as the character showed.

Jay Jun 23 2024 12:17 pm Please reconsider. I suggest: Encounter is the #1 most misunderstood and overlooked K-drama. Starting with the first major plot line, Cha Soo in episode #1 Tells Us she's Cinderella! Notice the Cinderella parts: well-meaning dad gives Cindi to evil chaebol stepmother. Prince Charming ("PC") rescues Cindi over and over. 2 dances for PC with Cindi. 2 pairs glass slippers. 2 evil moms try to keep PC & Cindi apart. Fairy Godmother repeatedly brings PC & Cindi together. The standard Cinderella fable is an offer of hope to young women that a PC will rescue them. It's ALL about being rescued. Encounter says: "Wrong! PC can't rescue you. You have to rescue yourself." The common K-drama version is: rich handsome chaebol, who is a jerk, meets commoner girl. Girl's influence turns chaebol into a decent guy. Girl gets to enjoy chaebol status and bling. Encounter disagrees.

Encounter starts with Cha Soo having ascended to chaebol princess status. Her life with chaebol sucks. Encounter illustrates chaebol are miserable sociopaths (like most oligarchs are). Stay away from them! PC rescues Cindi Over and Over. Eight rescues in Ep.#1 alone, including her life, her shoe, her feet, her stomach, her ride back. But, even after rescuing her so many times throughout the drama, at Ep#15 1:04, PC admits to teacher Lee that he can't rescue Cindi from the Castle of Guilt (fear) that she has trapped herself in. Then her father, who is in prison, tells Cindi to look inside herself, that she has to overcome her fears, she has to rescue herself. Then She Rescues Hersekf, she overcomes her fears.

Profound plot content: In some religions, life is a journey of self-improvement Away From Fear, toward love. Encounter embraces that idea. Notice the references to El Camino de Santiago, a spiritual self-improvement trek, including the prominent map in the church and particularly at the culminating point of Encounter. Encounter understands that fear, not hate, is the opposite of love.

There is much, much more that has gone unrecognized. There is another major plot built on The Little Prince ("TLP") TLP is extremely popular in Korea. Notice the TLP painting in her bedroom. Notice the baobab-tree metaphor throughout. All of those pairs of people in supporting roles are there for reasons. They illustrate a major TLP theme about nurturing friendship. TLP's primary insight applies to Cindi's journey: "One sees clearly only with the heart. Anything essential is invisible to eyes."

Korea's gender war is the context that Encounter speaks to directly. See the "Girls don't need princes" t-shirt scandal in 2016. Encounter is a big positive reply to that. Major Encounter theme: Modeling of Positive Behavior. In work, in life, in friendship, in love relationships. Females and males together nurturing positive relationships. Chaebol in the drama supply the negative contrast.

Encounter is Shakespearean in its content. Many symbols, many metaphors, many allusions, etc. Like Shakespeare plays, the more you see and understand, the better they get and the more you want to see them again. And that's without even mentioning Encounter’s extraordinary cinematic stuff that the directors, cinematographer, art director, etc. added.

Why is PC perfect in this drama? Why does he have to be perfect? He is the perfect male. He knows how to say the perfect thing to women (young and old!) with perfect timing...that they NEED and WANT males to say to them. The point is: even a perfect PC can't rescue you. You have to rescue yourself.

Yoka Mar 01 2023 12:23 pm Thirty nine. Mr. Yu Young-a, i hate personality cult. I never adored actors, singers or what ever. This is my first reaction ever. You wrote/ made a beautifull movy. My mother died last year of cancer. I was alone with her, my brother worked abroad. I had no Friends or family to help me and to share my sorrow. This movy is the truth about all the love and pain during the period of dying of cancer of your beloved one. It was beautifull to see how it could have been if i had family and friends that would have helped me. I hope your movy will stimulate people to take care of each other in difficult times. Because it develops the breadth and depth of a generosity that can nourish two connecred hearts and all their contacts Also the restraint and emotional pacing in the screenwriting reflects a writer who understands patience, its weight and outcome. And that patience and generosity are supported by a thread running throughout of exertion and discipline with regard to work and art and cooking. I will watch it many more times for sure. We'll done and to the Director also.

Ben Apr 17 2022 2:53 am There are some series I can just watch again and again. These include “Crash Landing on You”, “Something in the Rain”, “One Spring Night”, “Doctors”, “The Queens Gambit”, “Itaewon Class” - the list is quite long. But I must confess that I’ve watched “Encounter” more than any of the others. My only gripe with the script is the high bar set by the character played by Park Bo-Gum. He is anything but “ordinary”, the description given in the Asian Wiki synopsis. He puts most males to shame. As well as being amazingly considerate, he’s obviously very smart and will rapidly work his way up the ladder to the very top to form a formidable team with President Cha. It might be possible to produce a second series in which the relationship between the two leads is taken further. I guess COVID 19 will make it difficult to produce a believable storyline but I don’t think it’s beyond the skills of an experienced scriptwriter like Yoo Young-A. Here’s hoping!

I've never thought I would be impressed by another film with human actors other than the Sound of Music, so I always look forward to Disney's & Pixar's. I thought CLOY (1st KDrama I've seen) was fantastic, but not until I saw the divine love manifested by the actors in Encounter.

Gee Jan 21 2019 11:17 am Write Nim don't break the masterpiece that you have created by giving us a DAMN sad ending. You owe us a million by letting us hit by this too hard emotionally. This is your creation, don't destroy it. Enough of crying and hurting our OTP. We want the finale the best HAPPY ending ever told and created in K-drama land. Our sorrows will hunt and give you nightmares if you give us the bad ending. It is okay for 15 to be this emotionally draining episode but in the last episode it must be a scene that will bring us over the moon. HAPPY ENDING -HAPPY ENDING - HAPPY ENDING.

Finally, a drama that is realistic, heartwarming and not frustrating was created! Finally the characters think a bit and do not "sacrifice" their love only to learn that they should have stuck together from the beginning or do not stick together too much in an unrealistic and cliché way!! Your drama made my heart race and melt, I can't take it off my head! It is such a good drama !And the actors are the best! They are soooooooooo suited for it! Once again, the plot is amazing! I could go on for pages but I'll stop here haha. I support you and will be waiting for more romance and good dramas of you. I'd like you to know that I've never looked into a screenwriter before! Le Lamb Dec 28 2013 9:01 pm I am from Malaysia and many of us who leave across the ocean have the same opinion that Bel Ami is the best ever korean story line that we every watch. The twist of the story and also the way that you narrate each episode is so capturing.

16 episode are really too short to wrap up the whole family saga and i wish that one day, there will be investor that willing to invest on creating a movie that narrate more on how President Park and Na Hong Ran, get together to conquer MG group by pushing down all her brothers.

Please refrain from using the name of Jesus in the way you did it this episode. I am a Christian and I personally found it very offensive. Dawn Dec 13 2013 3:55 pm What can I say! I love Bel Ami, so much. I watched episode 8 last night and I've read where this show is projected for only 20 episodes...and I am so curious if you have been able to satisfy all the questions the viewers are coming up with in their heads. For me, I have a lot of questions, where the episodes thus far have not completely satisfied, such as, how did Ma Te's parents meet each other, and why didn't Ma Te's father financially support them if he knew of Ma Te's existance...why did he allow them to live like that. He seems so uncaring, even right now as he battles his health problems...he checks up on Ma Te's status but he is leaving him prey to his villanious wife and former daughter-in-law.

I also have questions about why Yo Ra is making Ma Te go through all of these different women, while there are lessons to learn from each...it's seems more like she is using Ma Te to fight her old enemies...women that she found fault with....maybe they were so-call friends and turned on her when she was put out of the MG family...not sure....again questions!!!! Yo Ra seems to be hurting Ma Te more that anyone else...because he doesn't seem to be getting any closer to meeting his father, than he was in the beginning. And poor Bo Tong, she doesn't seem to be getting any closer to capturing Ma Te's heart than she was in the beginning...really she seems to be heading in the opposite direction, because the storyline has been unable to separate her from Choi David...it's pushing those two closer together.

Anyways, writer I commend you on doing such an entertaining script...but I hope in the remaining 12 episodes that it will all become clearer...or you will get the GREENLIGHT TO ADD ABOUT 10 MORE EPISODES...ANYWAYS, GOODLUCK AND LOOK FORWARD TO THE REST OF THIS DRAMA!!!!!
