In 645, massive Tang forces, led by Emperor Li Shimin (Park Sung-Woong), invade Goguryeo kingdom. Goguryeo forces, led by Yeon Gaesomun (Yu Oh-Seong), are defeated repeatedly. Yeon Gaesomun decides to retreat to Pyongyang Castle which is the capital of Goguryeo and he orders Sa-Mool (Nam Joo-Hyuk) to kill Yang Man-Chun (Zo In-Sung). Yang Man-Chun is the lord of Ansi Fortress and Yeon Gaesomun calls him a traitor for not taking part in the war with the Tang forces. Sa-Mool travels to Ansi Fortress to kill Yang Man-Chun, but, there, he is touched by the way Yang Man-Chun cares about his people.

Meanwhile, Emperor Li Shimin and his Tang army are nearing Ansi Fortress. The fortress resides on the Tang forces' march to the capital of Pyongyang. Yang Man-Chun and his army decide to defend Ansi Fortress to the death.

The stunts, the cinematography, the screen play, the executions of the director, the sound effects, the background music ... everything is truly marvelous !!! I just can't get enough of it. The emotions, the thrills, the suspense, the anticipations and the impact of this motive is deep, felt and lived. And this is my third time watching this motive and I never grow tired and bored of it.

I highly recommend this movie !!!

maanvely Jul 28 2019 10:42 pm Oh, wow! I loved the movie! It's an emotional breathtaking joy ride! Amazed by the beautiful cinematography and superb acting, except the woman who was the Medium. Jung Eun Chae's acting didn't come to par with everyone elses. Jo In Sung is a priceless gem. I hope to see him often in movies and dramas.

Definitely one of my fave war movies that I would watch over and over again. This is a must watch film!

JVW May 07 2019 10:12 pm One of the best Korean historical war movies I’ve ever seen, if not the best. The acting and fight scenes were beyond superb. I am so disappointed that this movie didn’t get the highest ratings possible because it deserved it. The realism of this movie was mesmerizing and enveloped and swept me away to a dimension beyond the confines of the 20th century. I felt like I was in a time warp; it was scary. I don’t know how the Koreans do it, but they do, and in my opinion are the best movie makers and have the best actors on the planet. Hello from Texas!

I dont know if it's because the Taizong people are chinese and the actors are korean, or it's the difficulty of ancient chinese accent(even in chn movies they use dubbing to match the old accent properly) but their accent sounds a little odd. Anyways, still great! I was in class when I watched this and I couldnt help myself from screaming the whole time. Also recommended it to some of my friends and they totally loved it!

At first I was hesitant to watch this movie until I finally decided to do... and it proved to be a really and truly fantastic film to the max !!! Everything is so marvelously crafted, the sound track, the costumes, the scenes, the script, the cinematography, the stunts, the effects, the locations, the directorial, the entire production! The cast is just so g r e a t !!! Zo In-Sung has really matured and developed from a typical heartthrob into a brilliant actor, Nam Joo-Hyuk indeed performed very well in this first movie of his, Seol Hyun has truly proven her worth, not just a cutie babe but a very fine and talented actress, Park Sung-Woong, Bae Sung-Woo, Um Tae-Goo, Park Byung-Eun, Oh Dae-Hwan and Sung Dong-Il performed at their best! They provided a very solid support and significance to the heart of the story.

HTG Nov 03 2018 9:32 am Although the ending is a little bit rush and lack of some strong sense, it is energetic and inspired their ways of fighting. It is undeniable Nam Joo Hyuk's acting is much improved compared to the previous drama. He deserves best new actor.

Despite a formidable effort and occasional grace, there’s something cowardly about The Great Battle -- it’s an aspiring giant with a diminutive soul.

The graphic battles may grow repetitious toward the end, the final scenes are almost sadistically drawn out, and the script often lacks humor. But this movie moves.

but heck, why not another period movie...as long his gonna have a lot of hot fight scenes..

but hopefully his next project will be an action/crime drama with romance tag ofc..

I fell in love with him after watching him in Memories in Bali with Ha Ji Won and That Winter, The Wind Blows is one of my favorite dramas. I love Nam Joo Huk in Weightlifting fairy and The Bride of Habaek. I hope this movie will be a big hit because I am surely going to watch this.
