Plot

“Hana Yori Dango” is about a poor, but bright high school student named Makino Tsukushi (Mao Inoue) who attends an exclusive high school where only the rich go. She ends up having encounters with the bachelor F4 and experiences love and friendship.

Based on manga series "Hana Yori Dango" by Yoko Kamio (published from 1992 to 2004 in Japanese shojo manga magazine Margaret).
The original Japanese title "Hana Yori Dango" or ""Boys Over Flowers" is a pun on the Japanese old saying "Dumplings over flowers," referring to people who attend Hanami (flower festival), but instead of enjoying flowers, focus more on the materialistic side of the event such as getting food and buying souvenirs.

Rclbrkr Nov 15 2022 2:31 am I quess this dorama has it's own charm. I keep coming back watching this everyyear (since 2006). Really love this drama version of F4, inue and matsujun really meant to be together. Shun oguri is the perfect relationship wreker. Tsuyoshi and Shota are perfect partner in crime. Everytime matsujun cry, my heart hurt so bad and makes me wanna wipe everytears. And everytime Mao cry, i really wanna hug her and encourage her. It's so good. It's a classic.

Domyouji Syah Jun 19 2021 5:12 am Too Good I Cant Move On, I just finished watching both seasons and movie, and ended up rewatching it again the next day, I'm 16 years late but this just topped my drama list, it's beautiful I love all the cast, they're perfectt, I also just finished the whole manga, both have their own charm, but damn, I still prefer the drama, they didn't blindly just follow the manga, but instead adapt it perfectly, they omit some unnecessary and violent parts, and come up with a more human and quirky domyouji, which I loveee so muchh, I love the fact how the directors took the parts from the manga, but arranged chronologies differently for the adaptation which results in the storyline being more realistic and make sense compared to the manga, the director has indeed done a good job in coming up with their own originality by adding new plots and elements despite referring on a manga, Good Jobbb wait I'm not done, plus it's fast paced, compared to other adaptation another plusssssssss.

Gern Jan 04 2021 5:40 pm The Japanese version was my favorite. The back and forth between the two leads was nearly perfect in the first half, and a bit drawn out but still great in the second half. After watching the Taiwanese Metior Gardens and Korean Boys Over Flowers, I found myself repeatedly saying “this makes so much more sense,” on seeing how it was all weaved together in the Japanese version. Even the side story lines had relevance to what was going on in the main story line. It makes so much more sense when a side love story makes the a main character realize something or take new action. It was a bit more cartoonish, which some might not like, but suited me. For example her parents were total,cartoon characters.

What killed me was the ending. It perfectly wrapped everything up in such a rush and in such an over the top way, I couldn’t help but smile. This instantly made my short list of favorites.

The strong Makino Tsukushi . I like all about this drama. I wish this drama have new season maybe season 3 with the same cast (hahaha, in my dream -.- ). This is my second time watched this, and I not going to regret . Worth watching drama ever. Watched the korean version but my opinion Iike the japanese version rather than Korean one ( this is just my opinion ) . I rarely comment in Asianwiki but if I comment that means this drama worth watching ^^

I have watched all the versions of hana yori dango and they are good too but i keep on rewatching this all the time, i can't even count how many times I've rewatched this! I have loved the cast of this drama! Jun Matsumoto and Mao Inoue is so heart heart. I'm so glad the 3 members of the F4 are finally married. And we can't deny the mere fact that of all the versions of this drama only jun matsumoto and mao inoue lasted in relationship in real life ❣ they were in a relationship for soooo long since this drama and even though there is no news or update about them this year. I do hope and wish they'll end up together ❣ I support themmmm ??? and I'll never get tired of this drama ??? I love this superb ! Hihi ! ???

No one can portray Domyouji Tsukasa better than Matsumoto Jun & Makino Tsukushi better than Inoue Mao. Also the chemistry between these two is no joke. I will never get tired of watching this drama.

Chemistry between two leads: 10/10 -- Mao and Jun are just soo cute together! Story pacing: 10:10 -- it wasn't as dragging as the other versions

OST: 9:10 -- I mean, who wouldn't love Utada Hikaru and Ai Otsuka? Flavor of life by Utada Hikaru is one of my favorite j-drama osts!

Character development: 8/10 -- a bit lacking in this department, maybe because the story was fast-paced (as with all other j-dramas), but delivered nonetheless!

Acting: 9/10 -- J-drama acting took me a while to get used to because sometimes they usually have this exaggerated facial expressions (kind of manga-like, I guess), but it was still awesome!

Watched this back in 2006 and I still rewatch this again and again and again!

In the Japanese version,Tsukushi looks just like Nandini from the Hindi version, Kaisi Yeh Yaarian ,making her the prettiest. All the girl characters were shown with strong personalities and strengths with a 'never give up ' attitude

Chrissy Jan 01 2017 7:54 am I am currently watching the Japaneses version of BOF. I was reading the synopsis of the Hindi version & that's how I realised it was based on a Manga series. I watched most of it and then decided to give the Korean version a try since I had the Drama Fever app. This is my conclusion:

Taiwainese version: Even though the picture quality at times was naff, I thoroughly enjoyed it because they allowed the development of each character and the main lead was shown as the one to truly discover his inner strengths and develope a softening side.

Korean version This was very slick and and just concentrated on the 2nd lead giving her most support whereas in the above version there were too many people so story line jumped a bit. Kim Hyun Joong gave a good performance so my heart went out to him.

Japanese version This version is happy-go-lucky but serious too. The uniform was better and the wealth of students was more apparent. The houses were better so depicting the wealth of F4. The drama was evenly paced and I cannot wait to finish watching it.

In all 3 versions they successfully portrayed the 2nd lead very well & it helped that they were all good looking especially Jihoo,just perfect.

Thanks for reading my synopsis.

I shall watch the animated version after.

Di Nov 13 2016 3:45 am BOF was one of the first dramas I watched and I enjoyed it I mean cmon Kim Hyun Joong am I right! BUT I have been watching J Dramas lately and decided to give Hana Yori Dango and it is by far the BEST! The plot doesn't drag as much as the Korean version there were many plot lines that were unnecessary in BOF and the overall story of Hana Yori Dango just flowed more naturally. The chemistry between F4 and the cast in general was also better which made the story more emotional for me. Loved everything and I died when her boss related her love story with Rudolph LOL! Shota Matsuda the cherry on top of this awesome drama!!!

sky Aug 31 2016 7:05 am I think this is the best version. to be honest, i first came across BOF but I never bothered to watch it fully. I did watch 1 episode but i did not like it at all. that girl was so ugly and gu jin pyu too. in my eyes, they were not good looking at all. After so many years, I found the japanese version. I was not really interested to watch it but i watched the first episode out of boredom. then i got addicted to it. It was really done good. every thing was good about it. after that i got addicted to Jdrama and movies.

Ana B Apr 26 2015 7:53 am This is the best Hana Yori Dango drama (compared to BOF & Meteor garden). a. Perfect casting (Domyouji could have been taller though, but it's okay. He acted the best), b. Acting of the actors are great! They were able to portray their roles great! c. plot/story there were no lame and dragging moments. I especially liked how Domyouji is very mighty and full of pride but still was able to express love ( in an odd or diff way, which makes it very heartwarming). They did not follow the mangga 100% but made it better, that it's not too cheesy and much more realistic c. I disagree that koreans are the hottest, actually, Jap actors are the hottest profile/symmetric of their faces are better (maybe because their faces are of natural beauty). d. overall direction. No unnecessary scenes, such as too many make overs in korean version, the passing of some sort of cabbage, when they can just bring the container nearer (really unnecessary!), and that Makinos' house are more convincing to poor than of Jandi's which is actually pretty big house for a poor, their clothes, etc....For short, everything in Jap version is waaaaayyyy better than the rest.

I have to admit that Korean version's actors are the hottest, but their acting is below my standard. If you read the manga, you will know that Go Jun Pyo (Domyoji Tsukasa) has a strong aura. No, not that 'Rich Hot Guy' aura like the one Lee Min Ho potrayed. Its more like 'Rich And Spoiled Bad Child Who Thinks He Own The World' - yes, I use the word Child because even though Domyoji is supposed to be gang leader, inside he's still an innocent child who was looking for love. And Geum Jan Di (Makino Tsukushi) should be more strong! Makino was a strong-willed girl who doesn't afraid of anything, but at the same time a loving and caring figure to her family and friends. The BOF drama details' itself sucks. How could the stylish let someone as poor as Geum Jan Di wore all those fancy clothes? She even own a Louboutin for God's Sake! From all three version, MG was the best. I guess it's because of the time when MG was produced it is closest to the manga released time. Although I would like to say that Barbie Hsu is too feminine and modern (notice the tattoo?) for Makino Tsukushi. But the rest was great. I also love the soundtracks. As for HYD, its all okay. The HYD's F4 totally suitable (but they lacked charisma) and Inoue Mao was the only actress that potrayed Makino Tsukishi best. Barbie Hsu was good too since she's college student in MG, but Ku Hye Seon for high school student? Okay that's all from me. No offense BOF fans.

Guest Dec 03 2014 3:31 pm This is the only version I've seen but I LOVED it. It's actually one of the few dramas that I've re-watched. I don't hate the other versions per se as I haven't seen them, but I can't bring myself to watch either the TW or KR version as I have a problem finishing long dramas. Though I would more likely watch MG before BOF lol. From reading reviews and debates on which version is better only MG seem interesting (out of the other versions that I haven't watched) because they seem to stay true to the characters. Makino is a strong young woman who really is "tough as weed." She's also smart, have goals, and is true to her beliefs which I also liked. Her family loves her and supports her no matter what and I can see that she strongly care for them too. I can see a family like hers in real life and can see how she becomes the young woman that she is because of them. I also liked how they stood up to Domyoji's mother when she tried to buy them off and Makino's mother stood up and dumped a pot of rice over her head xD

I will never watch BOF as I want a Domyoji who is afraid of nothing but is able to change and become a better person because the girl that he loves, whether she returns his feelings or not lol, is also a strong person who makes him want to change because he realizes that he is wrong. Both fight for their love and for each others no matter what obstacles are in their way. Yet BOF's Domyoji already seem like a nice(r) person who really isn't an a**hole (who you are suppose to initially hate but grow to slowly love) and doesn't seem like he needs Makino. As for BOF's Makino, she does not seem like a strong young woman at all and how she got into the school and her family rub me the wrong way. I realize I haven't watched the drama nor do I want to, but if you love this drama I won't bash you for it. It just doesn't seem like my cup of tea.

For ppl who say that the drama was too fast-paced and hard to understand if you didn't know about the manga I disagree. I found it remarkably easy to get into and figure out the storyline and the characters. I think I did know that this was taken from a manga but that was about it. Yet, I was able to form concrete impressions of each characters and what drove him/her to act the way they did. People after all are vastly difference in how we think and feel and while something might not make sense to you, it doesn't mean that no one else might feel or react that way which is why I never saw this as "too cartoonish." I love how Domyoji and Makino fought for their love and for each others. I love the friendship between F4 and Makino's family. I love basically everything about this lol :D

Lastly, I realize that I'm in the vast majority when I say this but I actually find the Japanese F4 the hottest ^^ I didn't have to grow to love them, I always thought they were hot from the first time I saw them and watching the drama only made me love them more. (I'm only saying this because I'm sick and tired of hearing ppl say how hot the Korean F4 are and that is why that version is the best. Shortly followed by how ugly the Japanese F4 are.) I only have to say that you people are all very shallow and we probably wouldn't get along. Everyone has different ideas on what they think beauty is and so the fans of BOF's F4 shouldn't think that their opinion on the matter is the be-all-end-all. I for one don't find the Korean F4 all that attractive but I'm not going to bash their fans or call the actors ugly. The only one I find attractive is Jihoo but that is my personal preference. The Taiwanese actors are hot too. I find them hotter then Korean too I just realized lol.

oh joy Dec 03 2011 1:19 am This is. THE BEST. drama. eVER. I've seen other amazing dramas, but this is definitely the one that stays closest to my heart. It's simply gorgeous. On the outside, one might find it a shallow story plot, but it's not until you've seen it at least three times that you realize that it's OH SO DEEP. Neither does this drama get old for me because every time I watch there's always something new that I find. If you're a language arts kind of person, you'll find lots of symbolism, foreshadows, parallels, irony, and imagery in this drama that just enhances the absolute ingenious work that went into the filming. To summarize this drama in one word would be: CHARACTERIZATION. characterization, characterization, characterization... Each character in this story have their own unique traits, personalities, flaws, fashion, style, and quirks; and they build something beautiful with all they have to offer to the plot. And if you're just a girl (or guy) wanting to find something entertaining, this will give you the smiles, the tears, the laughs, the pain, and the drama that you're looking for. There is so much to say about this drama; but you will understand it all once you've seen it once. Then twice, then three times, then four...

I like Hana Yori Dango, bc it's an original version and more realistic.I also like BOF, bc it's more addicting and hot guys. So it's pretty hard to compare! So anyway, I love this drama and it will be always in my heart <3 So is BOF. (And the Chinese and the Taiwan one. I think they just trying too hard that's all. Im just saying.)

yatume Apr 08 2011 2:26 am probably the weakest version of HYD with the korean being best and meteor garden second... i really really really tried to like it, but i just couldn't bring myself to.

reasons were the cast wasn't so great, especially jun matsumoto as the lead. he's ok in other dramas, but just doesn't fit the mold of tsukasa. i was expecting a tall, handsome guy like jerry yan or lee minho or hayami mokomichi, but he's kinda short and not very handsome... maybe shun should've been tsukasa and it would be better or just cast the guys from "crows zero" and this would jump past meteor garden! i'm not too fond of mao either as tsukushi... just like jun, she just didn't fit the role.

seem like they were in a rush to do this remake... i suppose i could wait another 10 years for another one with a better cast!

Martins Dec 22 2010 7:26 am Actually I don't even think Lee Min Ho is a good actor. I find him very shallow as an actor. I can say Jun Pyo is closer to LMH personality wise than Domyoji (Never Domyoji will dance in a boys band, or let Soujiro punches him without punching him back, never !). That's why his Domyoji didn't touched like Jun Matsu did. The first time I saw the latter I didn't want to watch HYD. But Jun, even though he is not the best actor in the town, made me changed my mind. He managed to show the best and the worst of this character even though lookwise he is far from Domyoji of the manga.

XD All those BOF fangirls are like (.....) to me, I mean, seriously, I've read HYD manga and watch the dorama version like so many times, and it really brings out the meaning of love and I think they also acted 80% more natural than BOF. Even until now, I can still remember the HYD story. Those idiotic and fanatic BOF fans are just fancy and drool over the hot dudes..... = =a Like what you said, this drama is WAY better than BOF.

When I started to watch this HYD dorama 'till the end, I was like 'This is the best romance drama I've ever seen'. The love between the characters, and the character development, were all so well done and excellent! If you find a girl like Makino, you can absolutely fall in love with her directly, right? Her charms, and everything, it's a very good reason why Rui and Tsukasa totally fell for her! 8D (Oh, and the one who played as Soujiroh a.k.a Shota Matsuda also played in my all-time favorite manga, Liar Game, as Shinichi Akiyama. Check the manga first, so you can totally understand the story ;) Some of the characters are a bit....weird? but basically, it’s very good, especially for you who enjoyed mysteries and games! Two thumbs up!! XD )

When I saw BOF for the first time, I was like 'I THINK this is good'. After I watch a couple episodes, then I was like 'WHAT on EARTH does someone like JAN DI make these Jun-Pyo and Ji-Hu fell for her?' Had you ever seen Jan Di when she ate? I saw her as if she did not eat anything in 2 years!! (lol) Oh yes, and another part when Jan Di came home from the island thing. Her family was so happy but what did Jan Di respond? She just blurted out all her rage & anger just because Jun-Pyo kinda like 'hate' her at that tine!! What an idiotic, pathetic, loner, loser, stubborn girl!! It’s just like as if her family is a burden to her. If she did exist in my life, I will slap her VERY FREAKIN' HARD!!!! D:<

Korean REALLY destroyed the real meaning of HYD. And also, Tsukasa Domyoji is SUPPOSEDLY to be my favorite character. But when I saw this CRAPPY korean version, Jun-Pyo was just making everything WORSE!!! How come he fears so many things while Domyoji is not afraid of anything???? Stupid Korean producers..... =____=

From my perspective, Japanese was the best country in making these kinds of doramas, and they got the best character development and personalities. Even the actor/actress really like into their characters! XD Korean, well duh, what so good about it? OK, maybe the actors/actress are more good-looking than the Japanese, but I'm a kind of person who judges films not from the good looking characters. They just copy out HYD storyline and did not even put a single tiny drop of the real characteristic and personality from HYD charcters. :S

Maybe if someone ask me which k-drama is the best, from the storyline and characters view, I'd say Winter Sonata was the BEST EVER! I can also count 4 or more, but BOF? No way man! If it's get into the best k-drama, I will shout 'CUT THAT SHITTY AND CHESSY DRAMA OUT OF THE DAMN LIST!!!!'

neji_sorariku Aug 17 2009 11:03 am okay hana yori dango 1 i liked hana yori dango 2 better... tsukasa's hair in hyd 2 was cuter LOL!! okay..as of now the best HYD version so far (when the two seasons are combined) what i like about j-drama is that their dramas are not that long. they tend to make dramas that are short at least with what i have seen. as far as i can remember i still haven't seen a j-drama that exceeds 20 episodes. it's always 20 below. the tendency with a short drama is that the story is not dragging and has a fast pacing which prevents the viewers to be bored, the only problem i have is that when a drama ends with a cliff hanger and you're unsure if it will have a second season or not. I hate waiting... it's not good for my health. i tend to fangirl when that kind of thing happens and based on experience alone fangirling is bad for my health..LOL!!! that's about it i guess. the acting was outstanding inoue portrayed tsukushi very well and matsujun is as cute as ever!!!!!!!!! LOL!! bias much??? although i sometimes get distracted with akira's teeth LOL!! and sojirouh's nose LOL!! but besides that i'm okay...

cg Jun 11 2009 4:51 pm My favorite version of hana yori dango. A good drama with amazing actors who matched their role perfectly. I wish they had more episodes for season, my only complaint, but they never bored me unlike Taiwanese and Korean versions.

Hana yori dango is not lengthy, not draggy at all, and absolutely sticks to your heart--at least it's stuck in mine.) i've seen all the other versions,& ALL of the episodes i suppose, and still, no 'latest version' can make me change my mind when i say that this is the BEST version. c'mon. people are being superficial about the BOF thing. i mean, the series is good (but not as good as HYD), and it only had this much attention because of the success of its previous versions and its eyecandy leads, after that, there's nothing left really.

ANd though some of them DO act, (like Jun Pyo, since he has his own charisma, and i congratulate him for that)-- Jihoo, on the other hand can't act. and compared to Oguri Shun's acting. (okay, i'll stop the comparisons, since Shun's acting is absolutely incomparable).

Boys over flowers is good. Some ('kay, "most" parts amused me) but it was just too DRAGGING. wtf>? there are soo many unnecessary scenes, like Jandi's constant swimming. I mean, they dedicated at least half an hour total of her swimming and those other crap. I mean yes. OKAY we get it, she loves to swim. And sheesh, Jan Di can be quite annoying with her outrage. god, i want to slap her.

She can never compare to how Makino does it. You'd absorb more into her character. There are lots of her scenes that completely moved me in HYD. And with her charms, you'd know why domyuji and rui liked her. but with jan di, there's a part that you can say "why am i rooting for her again?"

Martins Feb 09 2009 12:43 pm the most smartly done live action version of Hana Yori Dango with charismatic actors who have chemistry and can act. The storyline is not rushed, forced and doesn't look fake. The lead couple and actors steal the show with their portraying of what the characters are really are and not the look. Their romantic scene are well done, not cheesy and you can feel the love between the characters. It doesn't need shallow things to be a success but charisma, good acting, chemistry, soundtrack, good filming settings ect... and it doesn't drag.
