smolbean Feb 09 2022 12:25 am Re: martial arts training. Started with Shorinjin Kempo, then moved to Kyokushin Karate where he attained a black belt (probably 1st dan). Video on youtube doing a demo at the All Japan tournament but no info on competitions. A versatile actor and talented in music (singing, piano, guitar) and dance. I think he was awarded the Purple ribbon in 2018.

Stephen Apr 28 2019 3:27 am I've seen this actor in several films, love his martial arts skill. I have a question, has he ever competed in martial arts contest? I know films are choreographed, but his movements are so fluid that it makes me think he's competed too. The Last Samurai and the Wolverine movies are the examples I refer to. Thanks for any info.

vicki brooks Jan 02 2015 1:50 pm Mr. Hiroyuki Sanada is a pleasure to watch in any role. When I 1st watched TLS I could not face him. To me he was ferocious. I have now fallen in awe of him. Mentioning his looks is nothing compared to his heartfelt and professional abilities. Hiro as I like to call him could play any roll and Hollywood should take advantage of this. He has stolen movies from his costars in every movie I have seen. I will forever be happy watching him play rolls so believable that I am transformed into the world where he is. Please Don't let him linger in small parts where the viewer begs for more.He is beloved and honored in Japan and all over Asia .He is loved in this home. Thank you Hiro San for all the effort you put into your rolls .Thank you producers for seeing his skills. We need more, not less of this fine actors movies.

mujia Sep 01 2014 1:47 am Hollywood is missing the point with Mr Sanada. Please stop taking roles that reduce your top shelf stature to that of Pat Morita. All the studios know is to make him evil or just plain weird. Hiroyuki Sanada deserves more than to be cast in tv series that surrounds him with others who can't act their way out of a paper bag (ie, helix). He's a leading man...Hollywood is not ready for Sanada. Sanada-San...please go back to making movies outside of the US so your American fans can enjoy your charisma once again on screen.

v8diva (Chaz) Apr 23 2014 10:16 am One of my favorite actors and martial artist in the world!!! Hiroyuki was also a good singer and dancer in his day. I've loved this man on screen since the early 80's and still love him today! He makes every role so believable! I hope to see more of him in leading roles here in the states! He was really good in 47 Ronin!

V. R. Reed Jul 06 2013 9:33 am As they say in the world of entertainment, 'Have I got a script for you' seriously as a I writer Hiroyuki can find better writers. But as the industry is always changing and not aways for the better he gets what's out there. But maybe he should remake 'Red Beard' for this generation or get Hollywood to redo te series, 'KungFu' though it has originally been Bruce Lee's project yes i know he's Chinese but I think a slightly different version with Hiroyuki would fly.
