Ken Kaneki (Masataka Kubota) is a university student. He becomes injured by Rize, a human eating ghoul. Ken is saved from the ghoul when a steel frame falls on Rize. They are both sent to the hospital. Ken receives an organ transplant from Rize and becomes a half ghoul.

Justafan Nov 01 2018 12:09 am I just watched the movie and i am so happy to see the cast, storyline, and the pace. Love the manga, hate the anime, but I love the movie. It might not be perfect but it was much better than all live action movies i hv watched so far (attack of the titan, gantz, fullmetal alchemist, etc), except kenshin. Love kubota as kaneki, i understand why the mangaka said he is the perfect kaneki and he is the perfect kaneki. Yu aoi also awesome as rize.

Thank's god they didn't cast shitty actor with pretty face who only can act cool like kento, hongo, yamapi, or most jhonny's actor.

Masataka Kubota was perfect as Kaneki and it’s not surprising why he was Sui Ishida’s choice for that role. Yu Aoi only had a few scenes but her portrayal as Rize was awesome. No other actress could do Rize as great as she did. Fumika Shimizu as Touka Kirishima did very well too. Her action scenes are amazing. And Oizumi Yo was really good as Kureo Mado. He is a very talented actor and I could tell why he was chosen for the role. Over all, this movie is definitely a must watch. If you have read the manga, you will not be disappointed.

As a fan of both the manga and the anime, I'll say this movie stayed as faithful to the original story as possible. I really like Masataka Kubota as Kaneki; his acting chops are great and he was able to pull off the role exceptionally well. The same could be said for the rest of the cast. I had goosebumps when I first laid eyes on Uta--amazing! Overall, I loved it and looking forward to see Juuzo and the rest of the gang in the next movie (hopefully). There's still so much to watch out for. Great job, everyone!

I just wished theres more they only showed season 1 from the anime but I guess couldn't fit well in the movie if season 2 is included. Hope they'll make Tokyo Ghoul 2 sooner :)

jentaka Apr 30 2017 6:35 am Don't judge Kubota Masataka if you didn't watch him in movie or a series. He is a great actor. Tbh, he outshined Kento Yamazaki who played L in Death Note series. Idk why but yamaken didn't gave justice to that role compared to L in the movie. So please stop whining about his looks as it not fit in the role. Maybe the director just wanted a mature actor so it will target a wide range of audiences too.

People accept it, he looks too young for his age, where as Kento not too but little old for his age so he doesn't even come close to the role. Dori, kento, hongo would fit the character as appearance more and also as personality they are already great actors.. And for yamazaki kento he is a great actor no wonder they are casting him a lot, his next roles are challenging , that's his year .. It is amusing to read haters reviews , successful actors have a lot of haters , he doesn't have to please everyone anyway :)

Mayn Dec 24 2016 1:58 pm I'm a-okay with Kubota taking the role, I mean as a huge fan of his and someone have watched almost all the films he acted in, I bet my whole manga collection that he would not dissapoint you guys! He understands the character he portrays very much and can adapt very quickly to it's personality and the aura it should omit.

And I'm seeing lots of comments about Kubota not fit for the role. Like seriously, the ones who commented that haven't even seen Kubota in films. And um, Kamiki isn't really fit to be Kaneki, it just doesn't fit his acting style. Kento Yamazaki? Ugh, don't even start. Please just let him stay on the shoujo. But Kanata Hongo would also be a good Kaneki in my opinion :)

I know he will be slaying his role as Ken Kaneki like he did with other roles (I fall in love with his potrayal as Light Yagami). And he's hot... What I'm afraid of is how the production team will make this live action good or at least decent. I hope they really know how to adapt Tokyo Ghoul to the screen and take care of the original story.

@Zee I want to know where Ishida-sensei said that he choose Kubota-kun as Kaneki because his scream. I thought it because Ishida-sensei saw Kubota-kun in trailer for the 2011 film We Can't Change the World. But, We Wanna Build a School in Cambodia. There's not much of Kubota-kun in that trailer and he didn't scream there, he just cry.

Zee Jul 16 2016 8:16 pm I admit that I judge a book by its cover, I always hear Kubota name but I never watch any of his works. At first, I'm not happy that Kubota Masataka get cast as Kaneki Ken. I don't think he is good looking enough to be Kaneki but let's be real, no one is as handsome as Kaneki <3 Then I read an interview asking Ishida sensei why he choose Kubota as Kaneki and Ishida sensei answer that "Kubota scream like Kaneki". And I feel my heart ease a little because I trust Ishida sensei. Later on I got curious and start watching not all but most of Kubota's drama and movie. In the end, I fall in love hard with Kubota. He is such an awesome actor. So now I'm rooting for him and I can't wait to see the Kaneki that Kubota will be potraying :D

Also to those who say that live actions ruin the mangas o animes, well, I hope you guys know that your comments don't matter at all in regards to the outcome of a Japanese movie. LA adaptations are not made solely for us who live outside of Japan. The homecourt audience will always be the target. And since Kubota-san is highly regarded by the Japanese audience and by the maker himself, then I'm sure this movie will be a success. Just like how much you criticized the Assassination Classroom and Attack on Titan movies.. well, they earned billions of yen even without the gross from the international screenings. I'm sure this movie will also be a blockbuster whether we foreigners will rant and complain about it or not.

I actually prefer them casting a new face with potential acting rather than the ones that have starred in many dramas and movies. F Jun 24 2016 12:27 am I think Kubota will be great at depicting Kaneki despite of his age difference. He isn't as handsome as new young actors but he can express anger & despair very good. Saw him on Death Note & Algernon. Kaneki can be expression-less sometimes. I think it'll be good if Kubota can do that too. As for Fumika, haven't seen her before so I can't make any comment. And Korean already have their own webtoon so they'll be sure to adapt significantly from there instead from manga.
