When a total eclipse of the sun takes place, Hae-Soo (IU) travels back in time to the Goryeo era. There, she falls in love with Wang So (Lee Joon-Gi) who makes other people tremble with fear.

- "Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo" takes over the SBS Monday & Tuesday 22:00 time slot previously occupied by "Doctors" and will be replaced by "Dr. Romantic" on November 7, 2016.
- Based on Chinese novel "Bu Bu Jing Xin" by Tong Hua (originally published online in 2005 on Jinjiang Original Network). Chinese 2011 Hunan Broadcasting System (HBS) drama series “Scarlet Heart” (“Bu Bu Jing Xin”) is also based on the novel.
- Early working title was "Dalui Yeonin" ("Moon Lovers") then changed to "Bobogyungsim: Ryeo" ("Scarlet Heart: Ryeo") before picking up title of "Dalui Yeonin - Bobogyungsim Ryeo" ("Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo").
- First script reading takes place January 8, 2016.
- Filming preparation began in late 2015 and filming finished June 30, 2016 at a set in Icheon, South Korea.
- Ep.16 was originally scheduled to air Monday, October 17, 2016, but, due to a baseball semifinals game, ep.16 will air Tuesday, October 18, 2016.
