Plot

Jang Mi-Ri (Lee Da-Hae) works as hostess in Japan. She is held there to payoff her stepfather's debt. The evening that Mi-Ri finally pays off her stepfather's debt, the bar owner Hirayama (Kim Jeong-Tae) still doesn't let her go. Mi-Ri then runs away from the place and is able to make it to South Korea.

Mi-Ri then rents a small room in South Korea. In the same building, Yootaka (Micky Yoochun) also rents a room. Yootaka has recently arrived from Japan as well and he rents the low-budget room even though he comes from an affluent family. He hopes to learn the ways of the world on his own.

Mi-Ri, becoming situated in South Korea, works various part-time jobs like washing cars while also seeking out permanent employment. This is important because as a Japanese citizen Mi-Ri needs to find a permanent job to stay in the country. Unfortunately, Mi-Ri finds it difficult to find a permanent job due to her educational background - Mi-Ri only has a high school degree and didn't attend college. Time is running out for Mi-Ri.

Meanwhile, Jang Myung-Hoon (Kim Seung-Woo) works for a hotel owned by his father-in-law. His wife is renown pianist Lee Gui-Yeon (Hwang Ji-Hyun). To placate an important customer at the hotel, Myung-Hoon needs to find someone able to speak the Japanese Hataka dialect. His searches comes up empty as that spoken dialect is extremely rare in South Korea.

Mi-Ri goes for another interview hoping to find a permanent job. This time, Mi-Ri is sexually assaulted by her interviewer. She is able to fight off the man and escape out of the buliding. While leaving, Mi-Ri is almost hit by a car. The man driving the car is Jang Myung-Hoon. He gets out of the car and asks if she is OK. Mi-Ri, angry over her entire situation, blurts out words in Japanase. Jang Myung-Hoon, who is still looking for someone able to speak the Hataka dialect, recognizes that Mi-Ri could fill that position. Myung-Hoon offers to hire her temporarily for a few days to see if she can do the work. Mi-Ri passes on the offer because her deadline to find a permanent job is approaching and she needs a permanent job. Mi-Ri then says hopelessly, "... even if I graduated from Tokyo University I won't be hired." Myung-Hoon, not understanding her correctly, says since you graduated from Tokyo University there is no reason not to hire you. This is how her lie begins ...

Notes

  1. Based on the true story of Shin Jeong-Ah who once worked as a professor of art at Dongguk University and chief curator at Sungkok Art Museum. She was then elected as artistic co-director for the 2008 Gwangju Biennale (one of Korea's biggest art events). It was then revealed that Shin Jeong-Ah forged her college credentials (a bachelor's degree from the University of Kansas and a Ph.D. from Yale University) and was fired from her positions. Shin Jeong-Ah served 18 months in prison. She was also romantically linked to former presidential aide Byeon Yang-Kyoon, who helped Shin Jeong-Ah gain employment at Dongguk University.
  2. "Miss Ripley" takes over the MBC Mondays & Tuesdays 21:55 time slot previously occupied by "The Duo" and will be followed by "Gye-Baek" on July 25.

dOpey Nice drama.,LDH did a good job on portraying her role..eventhough i hate her character.Happy it ends it that way.

Rose I love this drama..iam the biggest fun of yoochun@lee da hae..they are very famous here in the philippines...

Madonna estrada I love Kim seung woo!

  1. 1 fan here in the philippines

saly fot me i don't know why this drama didn't gain much popularity than this. it's true that with koran drama we have alredy acquired a stereotype that we did used to.but we need als to know that in life there is all type of people, and this mi ri is a good exemple of how cruel people can be, to me mi ri was also a victim of first her parents (specialy her mother) and the society without mention her lack of chance p.s excuse my poor english ^^'

yoomin I love Yoochun. I'm a die hard fan and it's all i got to say. thank you <3

wisa I've seen this drama about year ago, and I have to say I enjoyed it but i really hated the character mi ri, her whole thought process of getting to the top was all wrong. I was really glad the ending ended the way it did. I was really hoping she didn't end up with the two male leads. I liked that she got closer with her friend. Lee da hae did an amazing portrayal of this character, it took me awhile to watch anything she was in just because I hated the character so much. Now I'm starting to watch every drama she is in. Oh and didn't know this was base on a tree story, now I appreciate this drama a lot more.

vmarlany i just have finished this drama, the ending is not bad, and i am so surprised that this drama based on true story.

euaerin Love the drama. I've watched entire episodes. The ending is okay but I want Heejoo to end up with Yutaka :( but it's satisfying :D

didn't know that this drama is based on true story o.o its shocking..

Eun Jung Warning: Spoilers. Typically, when I watch a romantic drama, I wish for the hero and heroine to have a happy ending together. However, when I began watching Miss Ripley, I didn’t want Mi-ri to end up with either one of the leading men. I felt that both Jang Myung-hoon and Song Yoo-hyun were too good for Mi-ri. Because I was not wishing for a Cinderella-type ending, I enjoyed this drama. I have to say that the biggest reason I enjoyed this drama was because of Park Yoo-chun. I have only recently known about him, but have now seen all of his dramas. And I love all his dramas. He is now one of my most favorite actors. I loved watching him and listening to him as he sat at the piano and played “The Empty Space for You”. It is really cool to be watching a drama which has a wonderful lead actor who can also sing well. He has a really nice voice. I also loved hearing Park Yoo-chun speak in English. He speaks English with clear, correct pronunciation which sounds more beautiful than any other Korean actor I have heard. I liked the character Kim Seung-woo played, Jang Myung-hoon. I also liked Lee Da-hae. I have seen her in East of Eden and liked her there as well. It was so fun to see Uhm Ki-joon, who played the role of the prosecutor near the end. He was also in Dream High and is a fantastic actor. The story of Miss Ripley centered on choices people make and consequences of those choices. There were qualities such as lying, selfishness, and greed, blaming others, taking responsibility for choices, not forgiving and later forgiving in the story. I thought it was interesting to contemplate where one might draw the line between how much Miss Ripley might be accountable for her own decisions versus how much her behavior can be blamed on others, whose bad choices wrecked her life. The interpretations of love were also interesting to contemplate. Yootaka’s father and Mi-ri both chose to deceive in order to hold onto love. Yootaka (Song Yoo-hyun) wisely pointed out that this was not love, but greed. It is interesting to note that all three men who loved Mi-ri sacrificed their love unselfishly for her sake. (Even the man from Japan showed unselfishness in the end.) The message at the end of the drama was really nice: “Learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all”. Honesty plays a big part in loving yourself and others. It was good that Song Yoo-hyun encouraged Mi-ri to make things right in her life. I liked seeing the quiet demeanor of Jang Myung-hoon and Yootaka (Song Yoo-hyun). Both of those men suffered a lot, yet kept calm about it. Jang Myun-hoon’s expression was quite serious, whereas Song Yoo-hyun kept a smile and pleasant look on his face. It was clear, though, that both these men were dealing with a lot inside. And it was admirable the way they handled things.

OzFan4KDrama Just finished episode 9. I really don't like Mi-Ri's character. It's so cold, calculating, cunning and totally bad. Do people like Director Jang and Yootaka still exist? It would be very nice to see the love they have for Mi-Ri in this materialistic world. Wonder how this will all end? I have to wait till the next 2 episodes. I totally love the piano scene where Chunie sings the theme song. I'm starting to love the song! He is really good in everything he does, from singing to songwriting to actor. Thumbs up to you, Chunie (Yoochun Park).

OzFan4KDrama I am currently on episode 3. I am watching this movie because of Chunie (Yoochun Park). I have become an avid fan of his after seeing him in "Sungkyunkwan Scandal", "Rooftop Prince" and Ï Miss You". Being this early in the movie, I am already getting uncomfortable as the lies are starting to come out. Being biased, I'm rooting for Chunie's character and I don't want his character to suffer. I'm a silly girl to say this because it is only a movie. Even then, I am hoping for Yootaka to end up with Na Hee-Joo as they are both of good hearted nature in the movie. But whatever happens in the end (I've read the spoiler alert though), I can't wait to watch the next Chunie movie. Keep them coming!

unnecessary im watching until episode 6, i really hope yutaka and hee joo become couple.

J Lee Da-Hae's character can make you really dislike her but even so, she is always looking soo damn sexy, you just can't hate on her anymore. Amazing actress showing a femme fatale side of her.

Fangsing Thumbs up to Myung Hoon. a man full of charisma:-) charming!

fangsing watch the drama becoz of Micky. Find that he can act. Pretty good in most of his casts. One thing i noticed is the cast MiRi! As featured she supposed to be a girl who dont have much and struggle to make ends meet. Unfortunately she can be seen carrying tory burch, balenciaga, christian dior and mulberry in the episodes. Find it ridiculous.

Angelica I have to say that I watched this drama just because of YooChunnie. Although I didn't like that much the story, as a fan of JYJ I know how hard he (and the whole cast too obviously) worked. The drama leaves behind a lot of things that we should learn from like how harmful is lying and how much hurt can you as a lier get in the end. I watched Da Hee's acting in"My girl" and she was sooo sooo funny that I couldn't get used to this cold and liar girl. It may not be a perfect story, but I've watched Chunnie's say how hard and much difficulties they went through filming it, so I value that effort and recommend it. ^^

Ronaldo I watched this drama because of Micky Yoochun who had been awarded as most popular actor. Indeed, the casts did well particularly Micky. I don't like that much the story because of excessive scenes of lies. It would be better it they lessen such things because its not good influence for the viewers but since its based on true to life story, then, let it be. It just make me realized that melodrama really sucks and stressful, instead of entertaining the viewer, it makes them more sad and worry....i better stick those with comedy...

Muyamoh This is a great drama that never makes me bored. It is giving audience the lessons of honesty and sincerity. All the cast are great. The role of first lead actress is unacceptable character in the society. But Lee Da-Hae acts so well in her role and she is so so beautiful. I like the ending. Jang Mi-Ri can not be with Yootaka. And if I were Na Hee-Joo I will avoid Jang Mi-Ri. Jang Mi-Ri is really scary girl and her love is so doubtful. Kim Seung-Woo is also a great actor. So nice watching him in 2 days & 1 night show. Role of Jang Myung-Hoon is respectful and he is pitiful for bad luck in love. Micky desvered award as new actor and also Kim Jung-Tae. I bought the DVD.

Consus My favorite character in this drama is Kim Jung Tae. Although, he was the evil guy in this movie. He made me laugh when his parts came up. I was hoping they would do some more parts with him in them. like the actors but really didn't like this movie much because the actors didn't seem to have chemistry with each other.

me i dont like LDH in this drama..poor Jang Myung-Hoon..he sacrified everything for her but she didnt

rolypoly l watch this drama because of jiyeon.

LuAnaT Kim Seung-Woo is simply the best actor.

Ginger Love the look on Kim Seung-Woo, he is sooooo handsome. He sacrificed so much for her. Sigh.

baby Miss ripley is really one of the best korean drama that i have watched.i really would love to see miss ripley part 2!!!!:) Lee Da-Hae & Micky Yoochun look really compatible & their acting skills are really superb & marvellous!!! Yuya,,x Yoochun <3 I only watch this drama because of youuu !! You are really hansome and cute !!! Iloveyouuu <3 :)

merdewi Anneyong haseyo! I really love this drama..Lee Da-Hae is a young talented actress...she is beautiful and graceful..the character that she presented in this drama is very much reflected in the way the hardship that she has been through when she was a little girl..she was brave when she was little and even more brave and cunning when she was a big girl..she looks elegant wearing the red dress and the love scene with Kim Seung-Woo looks very real..she and Kim Seung-Woo looks very passionate in this drama..unlike other actors and actresses where they look so inadequate in love scenes but in this case, for the first time, one can see the passion and love she brings to the drama..thank you for making this drama!

janice lee da hae is very great actress...she's my favorite korean actress...hope to see her in more k-dramas.

Lena The story could have ended better with LDH and Micky starting the relationship all over again.. It's so sad that they can't be together. :(

jantar I dont like lee da hae but because of yoochun icthink im going to watch this drama. I hope this would be great,<3

emyeu This is one of the best kdrama I've ever seen. LDH is my fav actress and she acted so good. But the ending is quite sad. If you're a kdrama fan, you have to watch this drama !

cristinefadden Hi,

I am one of the fan of Micky from Asia. Actuallly, I don't like the role of the actress. It may be true or not I don't care. Should be Micky stay simply not complex with her. Although their acting is better, I don't want Micky together with her and can't accept that kind of girl. For the asian, I actually can't accept many conditions. By the way, I think their acting is very well and may be successful in Asia. I can't feel you like the Yootaka. I will have to watch the last episode only in order to see you. Wish you more success in the future.

ieie041093 I'm so angered >////<

itja can't wait this drama,,, 4 best lead actor ^^
