Sometime during August, 1598, newly appointed governor Dam Ryung (Lee Min-Ho) stays for a night at an inn run by Mr. Yang (Sung Dong-Il). During that evening, Mr. Yang shows Dam Ryung a captured mermaid named Sim Chung (Gianna Jun). Later that night, Dam Ryung releases her into the ocean and, before she swims away, Sim Chung reaches out her hand to Dam Ryung which he briefly holds.

In the present day, Joon-Jae (Lee Min-Ho) is a smooth talking conman with magician like abilities. He works with Nam-Doo (Lee Hee-Jun) and Tae-O (Shin Won-Ho). For their next score, Joon-Jae impersonates a prosecutor and swindles a large amount of money from a wealthy suspect's mother. Joon-Jae then travels abroad and stays at an oceanside resort. Meanwhile, Sim Chung is swept up in a tidal wave and washed ashore near the oceanside resort. She sees Joon-Jae.

"The Legend of The Blue Sea" takes over the Wednesday & Thursday 22:00 time slot previously occupied by "Jealousy Incarnate" and followed by "Saimdang, Memoir of Colors" January, 2017.
Screenplay is motivated by a mermaid story in story collection "Eou yadam" by Joseon scholar Yu Mong-In. Story revolves around county magistrate Kim Dam-Ryung who released mermaids into the ocean.The mermaids were caught by fisherman.
Drama series will be the last acting role for actor Lee Min-Ho before he enters into the military for approximately 2 years. Drama series is also the first acting role for actress Gianna Jun since she gave birth to her first child.
Filming began August 19, 2016 at Goesan, North Chungcheong Province, South Korea.
Filming moves to the island of Palau in late August, 2016 and filming will also take place in Spain in September, 2016.
First script reading took place October 8, 2016 in Sangam, Seoul, South Korea. The first script reading lasted for 3 hours and covered the first 4 episodes.

Gianna Jun is just irresistible, so quirky, funny, natural in this production. It makes me laugh and cry. The ideas and their realisation are so funny, charming, heart-warming, big cudos to screen writers, directors etc. This show is a real treat!!

Sam Sep 13 2022 7:20 am Ju Ji Hyun is a natural comedian so she is perfectly cast in this drama, being also beautiful and talented. Lee Min Ho is at his best in this and surprised me that he can do comedy too, some parts are hilarious. It’s a charming myth /drama, well directed and supported by the other 2 guys in the house, Tae Ho and Moo. Lee Min Ho seems to like time shift fantasy, but this is by far the best. Loved the 16th century story running dude by dude with the modern one. The only problem was the ending when Cheong came back, there was no connection with anyone except with Joon Jae and the little girl. That fell s big flat. Overall one of my favourites, have watched at least 3 times.

Elsy Aug 04 2022 3:48 pm I started watching KDramas in 2014 and my first dramas were Master's Sun and Boys over flowers. TBH when I re-watch these dramas I find them so outdated and cringy. But BOF will be always my guilty pleasure. I was a teenager then, so I saw the things from a different prism. However, I took a break from Kdramas and stopped watching them for 6 years until my curiosity didn't appear again and I watched this drama. I'm not usually into mermaid types of stories but this film was beautifully done. And I also didn't find it that cringy. There were some moments but overall I liked it so much that I started watching Kdramas again. The Legend of the Blue Sea is right there on the top of my list of favourite dramas. P.S. can we mention that the soundtrack was mesmerizing as if you are in a different world. One of the bests!

Jenny Jul 03 2022 2:55 pm This is a cute series with a fantasy theme. Although slow in parts, I found it captured my imagination and couldn’t stop watching. Lee Min-Ho’s acting was a bit exaggerated especially in the scenes involving his father’s death, while Gianna Jun’s acting was “wooden” at times. The other characters were portrayed very well especially that of the evil stepmother. It’s hard to understand how the series was ranked so highly by viewers in Korea when compared with some of the other outstanding programs coming out of their production lines. I rated it 7 out of 10.

Shelly Nov 14 2021 7:13 pm Jib Just Hyun is so versatile and beautiful. She is tall and dramatic looking and can do comedy really well. Hilariously funny. Lee Min Ho at his best, I don’t usually like him as he poses instead of acting but here he tries a bit of comedy and thriller. I know he loves fantasy. Well paired with Giana. But the crew of co men just so good, Lee Hee Jun and Shin Won Ho, such a funny team and policeman good too. They played off each other. Surreal seeing the dad from Reply 1988 as a baddie.

Not usually into fantasy but this you can’t go past and there’s nothing to watch atm so looking back. CLOY, IOKTNBOK, Mr Sunshine, Sky Castle, VIP. Please Netflix, put on some more good ones. Vincenzo best of the new ones. Will try Kingdom.

This 5 stars.

The maritime scenes are reminiscent of old Hollywood movies starring Esther Williams. I don’t like those movies for much of the same reasons I don’t like this series. In short this is a cliched fairytale reworked ad nauseum.

Jun 03 2021 9:01 pm I started this drama when it came out a few years ago… I recently just finished a few new dramas and didn’t have anything to watch so I resorted back to going back to old dramas I started but never finished. I was hooked and would watch 3-4 episodes a day. Then I got to the end, and like a previous poster stated, I’m still not quite sure WHY she had to erase his memories the last time… Can someone explain to me WHY she did? Couldn’t she just have erased it from everyone else but him and then return 3 years later? Given she KNEW she was going to return anyways. I feel like her erasing his memories was a way to “test” if he held onto his words that life is short but his love for her will last for a long longggggggg time. Like, she wants to erase his me memories so that when she comes back she can see if he truly does remember her and love her…. Which I find is kind of odd, could just be me… But I woulda rather they just came out and told everyone at the end, or she erased herself from everyone else’s memories but him!!! What was the point anyways if she was going to return, when they said goodbye they made it seem like it was the end of the world and they would NEVER EVER meet again… ?? I’m only on almost through episode 20, so let’s see what the last 3 remaining episodes have to offer. If I get any closure or anything….

Vali Mar 04 2021 11:14 am Love this drama a lot, but I reallyy wanted to see a scene where at least joon jae gets to see cheong as a mermaid. though it happened in the beginning,(he thought she was doing the mermaid show) but this was when he wasn't aware of her yet and it would be interesting if he got to see her in her true form at the time when they became really close and he knew all about her.

Erica Jan 30 2021 8:22 am Without a doubt Lee Min Ko’s best drama and he pairs so well with Jun Ji Hyun, they are perfect and act their parts very cleverly and have chemistry. It can’t be easy for her to act a naive mermaid and him to play the part of gradual realisation. He’s so much better than in King Eternal Monarch, he was not well paired, the story was daft and he seemed to have lost something in the he military. I didn’t enjoy that.

This show is a fantasy but believable somehow and the history well played. It was heart wrenching and well supported in minor roles.

Great work - I loved it again.

b Jun 18 2020 12:35 pm this is currently in my top 15 kdramas. this drama is the reason for my bisexuality, being in love with both jun ji hyun and lee min ho. but i just wanna say jun ji hyun dominates this drama. she's literally one of the most beautiful women. i'll also have to disagree with the people who say there's no chemistry between the leads. the plot of this drama is really good. and embarrassingly enough, i cried when cha si ah was rejected because i felt her... shin hye sun really is a versatile actress, which is why she's one of my favorites too. the cameo appearances are also very entertaining.

if it weren't for the plotholes and unanswered questions, this could have been a perfect kdrama.

up to this day, i feel very emotionally attached to this drama's episodes 1-3. i always watch on youtube the video of lee min ho singing the gospel song whenever i need to calm myself down.

A Jun 11 2020 8:35 pm This was the very first kdrama that I watched, and is probably my 2nd favorite drama (after Strong Woman Do Bong Soon), although I may be slightly biased because it's the drama that got me watching kdramas for almost 4 years now. At first I thought this drama was super long because I didn't know that kdrama episodes are an hour + long lmao! But I became really immersed in the story and acting. Everything about this drama is perfect in my opinion. The acting, the writing, cinematography. I'm not into historical dramas and this drama does have a slight historical side, but they pull it off so well that it isn't boring. LMH and JJH's chemistry is SO good, one of my favorite kdrama pairings of all time. And the show is super funny too. If you haven't watched kdramas before though I wouldn't recommend starting with this one like I did, rather start with a more realistic or slice of life kdrama! I've rewatched this drama a countless amount of times and it never fails to make me smile. 1000/10! Begging for a season 2 but I doubt it would happen :(

I really like sim cheong's character because always being moodmaker. So, if you ask "may i watch this drama?" i said yes! Please watch this drama, you will never feel disappointed. And the staff and actor/actrees really doing great.

The romance was okay between the two leads, but there wasn't really that much romance in my opinion. Again, I love the female lead she did a good job. The cast was really good and it was a fun drama to watch. I would recommend.

How did Kang Seo Hee seduce Jon Jae father? Did Seo Hee spread lies into Jon Jae dads ears? And Heo Chi Hyun past self . Did he have a personal grudge against the mermaid for him to throw the spear like that . They should have showed more of Chi Hyun past.

Had me coming home early to catch a few episodes at the end of the day. My wife and I had some great cozy up time together watching it.

The transitioning of the past and how it all makes sense in the future, omg. I can't thoroughly explain it. You just have to watch it! The actors are AMAZING. Each and everyone of them did a tremendous job. My favorite will have to be Tae Oh <3 he's super adorable and super cute. I'm pretty sure you'll end up seeing my comments i left about him as you're watching the episodes lol. The two main had amazing chemistry, in my opinion. I just love the way Lee Min Ho looks at his leading lady. I swear, he never disappoints me. I wouldn't necessarily call this drama a "tragedy" but i will tell you it has "tragedy" feels.. meaning, grab your tissues. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll curse, basically you'll feel all the emotions that an A1 drama will make you feel.

P.S. LEE MIN HO OPPA FIGHTING! Praying you're doing well during your military service. Can't wait to see you back in some amazing dramas <3

Fade Dec 13 2017 3:24 am This drama is really great. I really do love the plot and the flow of this drama is really great. This one steals my heart. This drama is my top 3 along with W and The Heirs. The idea to continue the two different story line (the past and present) really annoyed me in Goblin, cause it seemed disturb the flow of the story. But this one, everything flows great as a river. The chemistry between the two leads aren't the greatest for me, but still I really wanted for them to have happy ending when I watched this drama. Their chemistry is great, but not the greatest. I can feel the emotions and their love to each other. It's just great. Moreover, their acting is the best. The male lead, female lead, and everybody in this drama were doing really great to make this one very memorable for us as viewers. But unlike my other top 3 dramas, I don't really expect there will be another season. I will like it but, I don't think there is anything to be worried or needed to know. This one has the ending. Anyway, I've seen the many negative comments about this drama, I don't know why, but maybe because everyone has their own taste of movies or dramas or any other things, so it's understandable.. Many of the viewers said that this drama had slow-pace and kinda boring. But it wasn't for me. I enjoyed it really much. So, that's all from me.

Renee Dec 11 2017 4:34 pm Binge watched from season 1-20 in two days. First I watched him in his portrayal of a wealthy illegitimate son in The Heirs..I was hooked from then on. He honestly does bring such depth and realism to the characters he has played in both of these dramas. Like many of my favorite books, I found myself sad that each of these series had an ending. I wanted more. How do you bring that emotion to life? I honestly felt there was chemistry with Kim Tan and Cha Un Sung in the Heirs. And both he and his leading lady have floored me again in Legend of the Blue Sea. I found myself hopeful that perhaps that kind of love could be possible after all. I thought that it did well despite some setbacks, but those setbacks aren't ALWAYS being shown. It got resolved right away. And with the actors, Lee Min Ho & Jun Ji Hyun, they really did so well. I loved their chemistry and you could see the MATURITY. Both are really successful and they can really act, which got me hooked here. The ending was beautiful even if some previous episodes had loopholes but it was satisfying in my opinion. It wasn't a perfect one but I could say that you can give it a chance. As what the others said here, you need to focus. This drama also makes you think into deep thoughts about the story.

If you don't like it then don't hate. It's that simple. Just show some love to the other dramas that you enjoyed.

Lee minho really captured my heart, this is the first drama that i was able to watch him and now i'm still at the dilemma of his cuteness and beauty! I want to watch all his dramas and movies soon. I also love the acting skills of lee hee joon ❤❤ saranghae oppa to the nth power! And also the ever beautiful jun ji hyun! She's really amazing. I was hooked from the first episode; I guess you could say the umbrella scene at the end really got me :). Very magical, very addicting, amazing chemistry between LMH and JJH. I watched a few dramas after this one such as the Heirs and My Love From the Star, but this one tops them all. Maybe I'm biased because it was my first drama, nevertheless I definitely recommend LOTBS.

Not my cup of tea, after all the hype surrounding it I thought it would be more exciting but it ended up being just something for me to kill time while watching it.

The visuals were good though.

While GJ did not disappoint, there was absolutely zero chemistry between her and LMH. I liked LMH's dramas before but this time it felt like his heart was not into this role hence the lack of passion in his acting. It did not really help that the drama was poorly written as well. I managed to finish watching but just barely. I do wish to see them together again soon.

The romance between leads kinda boring. Wish LMH character did more for JJH. It will be good drama if the guy do more for the girl. This is why MLFTS is always my #1 drama because KSH always there for JJH and did everthing to protect her. Nevertheless this drama is still watchable.

The best thing about this drama is i get to see jjh amazing fashion, from her coats to her shoes.. daebak. But the story line is somehow boring. Im not sure why. I like watching the lead actors interaction but the whole mermaid storyline just doesnt work for me. I guess id rather watch it as sageuk or in modern times separately than mush them together and keep on pointing on 'Everythings repeated'. Second best thing about this drama: JJS cameo hahaha his chemistry with JJH is even more better than jjh and lmh. (I cant believe they win the best couple award???????) I watched wfkbj twice and i enjoy every second of the time i spent watching and rewatching it. I watch lobs once and i was so miserable waiting for it to finish. Its too draggy and pverly dramatic that it overshadows all the fun it shouldve had. My love from another star might be fantasy genre as well but at least its not that draggy. Also, the fact that hjj was a con artist who has good heart, who also happens to be a chaebol who ranaway at young age.. i cant. I just cant.

So in love with Jun Ji-hyun since "My Love from another star" and she is rocks this mermaid role. I loved this story which is full of metaphors' for the soul and would recommend watching.

The leads had ZERO chemistry and thats saying something as i both love them separately (Gianna Jun in My Love from the Star and Lee Min Ho in Boys over Flowers)! I only continued watching as I have nothing else to watch. The last four episodes totally made up for the lackluster first half. I love how the ending was wrap up unlike DOTS and Goblin which felt totally rushed and not so put together.

The only good thing I can is that this is Lee Minho's best performance (sans the pairing), other than that I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. It's long (20 episodes is long for a non-daily Kdrama) and a total waste of time.

Everything is good in this drama except the villians! I wish the villians were more interesting. Other than that, the leads and supporting cast are a joy to watch. The humour is on point.

rome Feb 26 2017 9:08 am I watched half heartedly till ep 15 then read the rest in dramabeans. I don't know I just never felt the chemistry between the leads. And the whole wiping the memory thing gets old after awhile. It's ok to watch... my fave character is chung's kid friend. she had alot of wise things to say but overall there wasn't anything fantastic about the drama. don't get me wrong they acted well just that the story is rather limited for a fantasy drama.

And can I say that LMH and JJH look so extremely natural in their acting as a couple. Especially their kiss scene at the end was so natural. Not awkward or forced. If only they had more passionate scenes together (which they can have in a movie LOL). I honestly don't know if I will accept either one of them with a different actor/actress now. It will almost feel like a betrayal. LOL. The cinematography was really beautiful in a lot of the scenes. I wish they had more of the mermaid legend in the show or if they had had a scene with LMH being able to interact with JJH as a mermaid. But both the drama and comedy were great. Ah, miss this drama!!

JJH must have really brought that quality out of him somehow. JJH was amazing, but she was somehow restrained. I don't know if it was her personally or the way the character was written. I want to say it was the writing though. I really think this drama's quality is better than most dramas, but I wanted it to blow away the competition. I really want these two to do a movie together to show the world how explosive their chemistry can be. Is it too much to hope for? =D That last kiss scene was so fantastic that it just shows how great these two could be when the writing really is great. Is it too much to ask for them to be in an epic movie (after he finishes his military duty). A blockbuster movie that is amazing quality. I want these two to be acting soulmates. LOL.

Jun Ji Hyun on the other hand, did justice to her role and indeed carried the show. I don't know if it's just me, but their chemistry seems lacking. Or I just still can't move on by JJH's chemistry with KSH from their previous phenomenal series, You Who Came From The Stars. Regardless, the series has a lot of opportunities that was unfortunately lost since the story wasn't that developed. Overall, it was quiet enjoyable but not highly recommended.

So much effort from the cast and crew really showed and I loved every minute of this drama. Refreshing drama, something new and I loved that nothing dragged out. Typically in dramaland one event gets dragged out, but I loved how each event somehow connected with the overall plot and story. I also enjoyed the comedy and romance, the character's growth throughout the drama. Another hit from Lee Min Ho and Jun Ji Hyun, recommend this drama!!

I'm telling you it's the type of scenes they were in that didn't allow for explosive chemistry like the poster wrote below. But they 100% have chemistry. I would not have continued to watch the entire series if there was zero chemistry. It's the writing. It really is. The way to test this out is if LMH and JJH did another project together!!! Yesssss!!! One that plays to both of their strengths. We love to see JJH as a firecracker. That's why she seems kinda tame her because her character is written as this innocent and naieve creature. LMH probably needed to feed off her energy to really create some fireworks, but the problem is the writing has the mermaid feel anxious and cautious all the time. In the beginning JJH was more spunky, but then LMH was written to be the cautious and anxious one. Put them on the same side in a thriller/caper/action whatever and I can guarantee you'll see them explode.

Ok the chemistry may not be exploding like song song, but it is really ok. Funny, entertaining, with great plot twist. It really goes beyond a typical mermaid story.

Personally i dont like gianna's exaggerate acting in the first two episodes but it got better after that. Also dont like the hypnosis stuff... but really enjoyed it after episode 5.

It's not their acting, the acting is fine and from their other stuff we know they are both very good actors. It's just that they have no chemistry or spark together. The lack of chemistry is the only reason I can point to for the rating not going high.

However, with this drama I watched it and OMFGOUSAHGASU this is seriously super good. I doubt I can find any other drama that tops this. A great beginning to 2017 in terms of Kdramas. I'm looking forward to future works of the actors/actresses who were part of this cast simply because they all had great chemistry - hopefully some will be cast together in another drama in the near future ^^

So uhh~ yeah, maybe it gets waay better after the pilot episode, or maybe we're just too old and waaay off the target-audience for this series but... Dramajunkie Jan 20 2017 12:02 am So I watched Episode 19, and I was so gutted. Episode 19 was phenomenal. This is how the drama should've been all series. I agree with BMR39 below that the entire cast carried this drama and not really the plot. The quality of the acting was really great from everyone. Like literally every single cast member was good. Even those that I thought were weak at one point ended so strong. Everyone from the main leads to the friends to the villains to the moms to the detectives to the little girl and the homeless woman to the greedy couple. Everyone. I realize now that the problem was the writing. For example, I thought the villains were weak at the beginning but turns out it was just that they didn't have the words to really be menacing. The villains were redeemed in the end. Great acting.

LMH and JJH were also amazing together. They are like a pair of gloves. Not only do they look spectacular together, but they have such a good range as a couple. They're great when they're arguing and intense. They're great when they're goofing around with each other. They're great when they are just riding in a car and being quiet with each other. They're great when there is skinship. I just loved seeing them on screen together. There was a bit of modesty here and there around the middle that I think disappointed viewers, but honestly I believe the writing is to blame for that because this couple clearly has the power to heat things up. I think there were a lot of theories floating around like LMH trying to be respectful of a married woman. PD trying to be cautious because JJH was a new mom. JJH being cautious because her husband would get jealous. lol. While all of this is plausible, it is the PD and writer's responsibility to address that. Whoever made the executive decision to have them be cautious/modest with each other in some scenes made a poor decision. They really could have scorched the screen with their chemistry if given the opportunity to do so. I'm not saying they had to go crazy but there is a lot of ways to show passion through small gestures which could've been written in there. I just believe it is writing that is what dialed them down in the middle of the series. The PD is probably also to blame for not doing something about it.

Having said all this, this was my favorite drama for this year because of the cast as a whole. I wish this could've been absolutely epic. Don't get me wrong I loved it and will remember this drama and will miss it, but this could've been blockbuster material. Sorry if I'm being hard on the writer because clearly she's talented.

But yeah this episode was so great. LMH and JJH should honestly do a movie together and bring some of the supporting cast with them. I think LMH really matured as an actor and showed so many different sides to him in this drama. I hope the actors read through these forums to see that we appreciated their acting and that they did a fantastic job. Seriously great job, LMH and JJH!! Do a caper/mystery/thriller together!! It will be so fun to watch!!

Gianna Chun and Lee Min-Ho are both very stylish and attractive. They are convincing as the key couple and most enjoyable to watch. Gianna Chun has a distinctive and classy face. The tiny natural beauty spot on the side of her nose, somehow adds to her appeal.

LMH and JJH carried this drama by their chemistry and the supporting actors were good too. The villains could've been stronger, but that's more an issue of the story and how it was written and not because of the actors. Not enough conflict to make this story great. Pacing was slower in the middle too. It was just really fun to see LMH and JJH work out their story and to adapt to each other. That's why I really kept watching the show but I wish there was a stronger plot. I feel like the writer confined the characters instead of letting them be really unleashed in this story. JJH is a passionate person, and I felt like she was kind restrained because of the story. To be honest a drama is really only as good as its story. The actors can only do so much if the story isn't as strong. I would love to see JJH and LMH in a dramaticmovie with some comedy where their raw talent/energy can really shine. I thought they were really great. I'm not saying the story was terrible but honestly it could have been much better.

But i hope that the ''special episode" that they replaced it with will also be subtitled in English so that i can watch it. This is one, if not the best, of the K-dramas I 've seen so far. I'm a certified K-drama fan since watching Jumong, Jewel in the Palace, Baker King, Smile Dong Hae, Queen Seon Deok, Empress Ki, She was Pretty, My love from the Star, the Heirs, Moon Embracing the Sun, i'm now simultaneously following 5 dramas, LBS, Goblin, Hwarang, Weightlifting Fairy and Bubblegum. i love the Korean historical dramas coz i really feel being taken back in time.. and love the contemporary dramas coz they promote good family values.. These should be the shows watch by youth today..Keep up the good work. Mabuhay (Long live!)

I admit it was kind of hard to do suspension of disbelief especially that gianna has a husband and LMH has his girl but later on as the story unfolds it becomes more and more believable and authentic. Especially that kiss in episode 13, it actually seems like they are a real couple. They may not compare to how I felt in LITM but it sure does keep me intrigued. Fighting! Hater's gonna hate but shake them off! :D

Ratings wise, not over the top but 17% is pretty remarkable!

The story looks so simple, yet it has a huge depth we can understand slowly when think about it carefully. Even we don't understand that depth or hints, it doesn't matter to feel the story at all. But if u watch this and you are keen enough, you can clearly understand that this is not a simple romance, fantasy drama what it seems. Though I tried several new and some hit dramas, this is the only Korean Drama I was able to watch so far in this year. I gave up watching every other some famous dramas such as DOTS, W, Doctors after watching few episodes, but here I am satisfied. All the actors including main casts have done a great job., but Gianna Jun is beyond the best.. Specially under water scenes are AMAZING. I don't know is there any K actress with such a beauty can do this character this much better. Wish her all the Success and all the actors/ actresses and crew too.

I've watched goblin, descendants of the sun, doctors, and weighlifting fairy kim bok joo. But LOTBS is the one and only drama I can really really enjoy this year ?

I think the show has not reached 20% cos the first few episodes weren't so captivating. But I'm glad that I stayed patient. The humour is really good without being cheesy .

The mermaid plot sounds cliche but this drama is really creative like hjj hearing the mermaid's voice all night and losing sleep. Lol.. I also like that the mermaid is always thinking of food like me.

And did I say before? Lee min ho is way too good looking and has acting chops. So lucky you Suzy!

The wait for his drama was long (3 years) but well worth it. Somehow the director and write of this drama LOTBS makes Lee Min Ho extraordinary good looking, attractive and he does shines like a bright star here. I was very sceptical of his paring with Jun Ji Hyun in the beginning. Can not imagine they will look good together due to the age difference and different aura of both stars but boy, was I wrong. The drama has been amazing so far, so many wonderful and sweet scenes which make me replay again and again. I am truly going to miss Lee Min Ho after this. You have done well!

This drama may have a slower beginning but the build up leading to the big moment is what makes it so good when it happens. JUST WATCH IT! 1-3 is a bit slower but each episode gets better and better starting at 4. And 10 is the best! Will not disappoint!

May be some of korean ppl are hating to this, but It seems internationally well recognized drama..I am a foreigner too. But if this drama is telecast in my country I'm sure this'll be a huge n recordable success..

It's unfair they didn't release a trailer for next episode (guess they should still being in the process of shooting) coz ppl who watch this fine drama have to wait suffering 7 days till the next episode, that is because the episode 10 put its viewers on a verge.. Curiosity of what are ahead is going to kill us within next week.

Frankly Lee min ho is at his best here. And the story is picking up. Episode 10 was simply mind blowing. Gianna is a brilliant actress.

Parallelism is often mentioned in describing this drama because of the modern and Joseon eras appearing to be simultaneous. However, whether it is parallelism or dimensional or reincarnation the story is about completion and/the lack thereof, will there be more reincarnations or will there be a sunset? We were introduced to a romcom only to find out that it truly a drama. The chemistry between the OTP really allows the observer to escape the bonds of fantasy and orbit in a realm of long lost love that is bound to find a resting place in the hearts of the OTP and the fans. I don't know what will come next but I have no complaints of where we've been, and where we are now.

However at the same time I wish no no pls come next episode slowly, coz JJH is not an actress who can be seen too often on screen (Movie n tv both).. so she won't do a drama again in ages. That's when I wish if We have a lots of more episodes to watch... now 8 is over out of 20.., only 12 episodes are left to release.

As well, despite all the hatefull comments, I hope the best of this drama is yet to come. I guess as much as the popularity of this drama, haters have grown too. May be that is because of the two best actor's n actress's unity. It is normal. If there are lot of haters that means this drama is already a success.

So I wish this drama all the success n JJH too. Hope she will come outside too often than earlier...:)

Also, it gives a bit of a variety to the mix. Reading redundant comments is not that enjoyable, you know? Cons (close ur eyes pls): - No substance (but still better than oh my venus there so u get a pro) - The music is quite not there? - No chemistry (but maybe that's just me) - Rabid fans who won't take no for an answer - Dangerous fandom

In addition, the plot does varies where the story behind lee min ho begins to unfold and sim chung got accident and almost died.

for @justmy2cents , yeah it is ok to give opinion but tbh putting negative comments and comparing dramas are too lame coz you have to realize that all drama crews have done their best as well. they are also human and they are not perfect enough to satisfy you 100% :) even if you want to criticize or comparing this drama, please do not put here coz you will just make others pissed off and you will affect others for maybe hesitate to continue watching this drama.

The two we'll-known actor and actress who've been on numerous successful dramas are finally doing a drama together. So what if it's a fantasy and so what if it's not realistic to fit in the Korean drama "world". Honestly, it's nice to have something diverse for a change. I give credits to the writers. And knowing that this drama at least made it to top ten nationwide is good enough for me because people would be able to experience the fun and emotional moments Korea drama shares with people. And honestly the dramas in korea has been great this year.

She's a beautiful woman, easy to fall in love with, but It just looks wrong, especially acting the part of a naive person unused to human ways. About the plot, it has been planned beautifully. The first two episodes clearly shows that the writer wants the audience to get famialirize to the two main characters. That is why the plot starts to develop at 3rd episodes and above especially when the 'bad' characters started to emerge. This drama has more things to offer! So stay watching!

P/s: I wanna give credit to the directors, writers, actors, actresses and drama crew for making every single scenes in this drama extremely beautiful, serene and worth to watch! And I love the background music as well as the OST!

I've watched up to the 4th episode, and I'm planning to watch until the 6th to decide whether or not to drop it. So far, I'm leaning towards the I will definitely drop this side. But before that, I need to lift some weight out of my chest. I 'WAS' a kdrama fan up to the year 2014, maybe? And that was because of MLFAS. Everything after that just didn't compare to it so I was frustrated and hated every single drama. Earlier this year, I was brought back to drama land because of W. The beginning was AWESOME! I was damn, drama you do you and I'll stay. Unfortunately, it didn't stayed awesome (imo), so I stopped my dramaland venture. Then, I heard that JJH was starring in a drama BUT she was starring alongside LMH (whom I quite connect with acting-wise). Despite that, I gave it a try because I'm a fan of JJH and I must say, that I am severely disappointed. Acting-wise, JJH definitely nails it. LMH has improved but not quite there yet. Everyone else is forgettable. Most importantly, the plot. THE PLOT! I don't a rat's ass about plagiarism but damnit there's seriously no progress in the plot at all. The story from the past was imo, better, enjoyable and intriguing which is great. I have to give credit where it's due. Only that, somehow LMH in a saguek get up is quite uncomfortable to look at. Like, you somehow know that he's not from that time? Anyway, present time is pretty much has nothing to offer. It only progressed after the killer (SDI) showed up. While I'm normally a very patient person, I'm starting to get impatient. If it doesn't do any good after the 6th episode, I'm going to drop it and take a break from dramaland, again, haha.

They are so cute friends of Lee min ho. Loved this trio. Especially the quiet Shin Won-Ho is adorable. Came to know he is part of Cross Gene Idol group. He is cute as button and i am already seeing second lead syndrome coming towards me ha ha. Good fun drama to spend my december month.

About their chemistry, as a Kim Soo Hyun fan, I can honestly say that Lee minho and Gianna have better chemistry. I think their outside appearancr suit each other more effectively.

And DOTS and this one are very different. Admittedly, I just watched DOTS since everyone watched it...but I did not get emotionally attached into it . But in this drama, I also got hooked up even just in the first episode.

Cant wait for ep 5!

I saw some people has put bad comments mentioning about plagiarism. About 7 years ago (at that time I wasn't a Kdrama fan) I watched a hollywood movie 'Lake House' n I fell for the script, directions and whole movie. It was such a touching and beautiful movie Cast by Keenu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. However, after some years I became a Kmovie, drama fan and finally became a fan of JJH by watching daisy. Then and there I watched all of her movies and drama MLFAS.

Amongst them II Mare was too. When I was watching that I felt and remembered the Lake House I watched long ago. So I was curious to know which one was the original one and found Lake House was the copied one. But, I wanted to tell, though that was a copy of II Mare I enjoyed both films in different ways. in II Mare, innocent looking and gorgeous JJH's portrayal and in Lake House matured looking Sandra Bullocks portrayal were different, yet both films were interesting.

So my point, whether the plagiarism has been done or not, if the drama is upto the level of enjoying then why should we be worried?

Among the dramas nowadays telecast on TV channels in Korea this is a completely different drama, giving a fresh experience to fans. Specially, a mermaid is a fantasy and lets enjoy it as a fantasy...

In actuality, the new TV series is based on Signal, because the two characters that speak to each other on the radio are both detectives, just like in Signal. Been under estimating this drama for 1st 2nd episode but episode 3 proves me wrong! Daebakk!! I do believe this drama will give us more surprises. Jun Ji Hyun is very beautiful even in the swimming scene and also with mermaid costumes that i believe its so hard to act while using mermaid costume (i saw some BTS videos that JJH using real mermaid costume in the water). And LMH slayyy proves me ep 3 show his chemistry with JJH. Best and very brilliant drama ever!

I hate that so much, it makes me remain Gianna Jun as Chun song Yi again, and it created a thought of this drama just follow that old drama, I mean I don't know, can't they just get a new person to sing the soundtrack, seriously it feels so sick. And sorry I quit to watch from now on, the cast is just awesome but the cinematography is getting worse.

I like minho and the acctress but yhis drama is a copy plus the editing is just terrible. I feel sorry for all of those who say it's unrealistic because they portray the leads as very smart and observative... you know NLP and that kind of stuff exists. Also, it's FANTASY. Mermaids do not exist and this is the main reason why this drama isn't realistic so get over it.

I feel such a hater writing this but don't give bad rating t an amazing drama just because of absurd reasons.

Both main actors portray a sense of innocence yet with charisma. So far the story keep me going on wanting to know the next scenes. The movie also show a sense of intelligence from the lead actors.

I enjoy the backstory / old age scenes more than the current ones. I feel like the other actors and actresses aren't helping the drama at all as their roles are exag. I swear if they try to polish up the story without the whole messy and unecessary magician/lawyer who wanta to kill the guy thing then maybe it'll be better? The fact that its mermaid background is unique, makes it interesting. No need to clutter it up with more complicated stories.

This could be the same thing in reverse. I thought it was great, but, inside Korea it registered an 16-18% great for the first 2 episodes.

popcorn Nov 19 2016 12:37 am The first episode seemed like it was rushed. They put too much scenes that it seemed off, that feeling that it wasn't satisfying. The scenes should have been a bit longer and had a lot of conversations and stuff. But i guess the actors where busy with their own schedules that they had to wrap it up in just three hours. But because of that the first episode was lacking. Don't get me wrong i love both actors and i've waiting for this drama as soon as it was announced.

But the second episode seemed alot more satisfying than the first. It wasn't fast-paced anymore and it had alot of meaning into it. I hope for a lot of better episodes because i dont want this drama to be ruined. I really really have alot of expectations in this drama and alot of love for the actors. Please make this as good as DOTS and My Love From The Star because everthyhing about this drama is promising.

A picture of Gianna Jun does not do her justice. Seeing her in motion is art itself. She has to be one of the most successful and talented actresses of all time. Gianna Jun might not have the longest filmography, but i doubt anyone can compare with her films string of successes. Gianna Jun is pure gold with some diamonds and platinum mixed in! I am so thankful to her Husband and child that they share her with us. Gianna Jun is not just a national treasure of South Korea, but the entire world! To me the Korean wave is a HUGE tsunami, and Gianna Jun is a huge part of it! South Korea might not have nukes, but it has the kdrama! I'm not sure which is more powerful! Like the beatles and blue jeans brought down the wall, I hope someday the Kdrama will reunite the Korea's. When it happens i'm sure it will be due in no small part to South Korea's thespians like Gianna Jun. PLEASE live a long happy life and make many many many more drama's!

JJH is my fav Korean Actress and out of all others she is so talented, beautiful, tall specially she should be the bravest actress in the K drama, movie industry.. I've seen most of her movies and dramas she does most of action scenes without stunts such as berlin file, assassination, thieves..etc. Every character which she featured is worth to watch though they were commercially success or not. Her character in this drama also should be a very tough one to act by an actress cos there should be a lot of underwater scenes. So that is the speciallity of JJH I guess. Wish all the success in this drama n waiting to watch it without patience...

Holy moly that is beyond amazing--the labors of birth (her first at that!), taking care of a newborn (and the milk production etc that definitely complicate, even if she's in a wet suit--maybe ESPECIALLY in one!!), learning a script despite the extra work at home... I'm slightly conflicted for her newborn, to be honest--less than 6 months to bond before very intense long hours take her away for our sakes... how did she shed it all that quickly/how was she so confident she COULD get her body back to baseline? One good perk that is super for a mermaid role=new mamas, thanks to hormones going haywire, tend to have glowing clear skin (and she'll be her curviest for anyone who notices that sort of thing).

I haven't been catching up on wiki news for a while, and was just doing my usual perusal of min ho's page when I saw that this drama will be coming up in November and was so excited. I must have asked a billion times-When is lee min ho coming back to T.V?! we miss him! I clicked on the link whispering fervently "please don't be a cameo, please don't be a cameo" And Alas! it's not a cameo.

The first few lines of 'note 3' almost gave me a heart attack. Sheesh! I thought he was quiting acting forever. Damn! Don't do that to a person.( Well I guess he's put it off long enough).

Anyways, I'm back to happy again! ^_^

I'm so excited and happy. I think I'm gonna cry haha.

I agree with you regarding the comedy part. This will be something we have never seen before and rediscover new underwater world that is hard to tell with spoken words but only with visual pictures and creatures that only appear in folklores. This is definitely going to mark a new change in generally and throw us into the unknown. Tbh there is really not many Mermaid movies or Tv-shows out there except Pirates of caribbean and they didn't go full on the mermaid story it was just a side show and didn't focus on that part while most of the people who watched that movie was into the mermaid part. The other is a cartoon and another old movie with Tom hanks I guess i'm not sure but it was not precise Mermaid exploration but a mermaid that becomes a woman instead so we didn't get the chance to explorer that world But I believe the first full time explore on mermaids will come thru this Drama. There is no place for comedy. It's one of these scripts and concepts that are intriguingly interesting by it's own.

So I think it will be refreshing and interesting to see actors in this drama that hadn't worked with each other before. If Kim Ji Won is cast, again maybe she would have a one-sided crush on LMH. We already saw that. Yoo In Na has a special charisma that makes viewers like to root for her. She is indeed amazing. It maybe true that she usually acts as supporting role but, she shines in her roles and brings out the best in herself.

After watching "City Hunter", I became a BIG fan of Lee Min Ho and watched ALL of his works and have been following his Soompi Forum.What I love about this upcoming drama is the fact that Jin Hyok, the DIRECTOR of "City hunter" is gonna reunion with LMH. Jin Hyok is hands down one of the best directors in Korea. I loved "Master of the Sun" and I believe the director played a huge role in the success of both "City Hunter" and "Master of the Sun".

The only good thing about that show was it's exposure for Kim Woo Bin who I'm grateful to now know. I always think LMH looks older than his age so the age gap will not be a problem. He himself said, among all of his costars, he felt most comfortable to work with KHS who's older than him, married, and also had kid, so what's the matter with all of that? I am sure this quartet: GJ, LMH, pd JH and writer PJE will create a wonderful end of the year drama that will stay in our mind and heart for the next 2 years when he's serving his country. One doesn't have to like her to realize her power and her popularity lies in the successful multitude of movies/tv shows she has starred in. Google any of her movies or shows. They do exceptionally well in and outside of Korea. Her popularity isn't lessened by those who dislike her. They only have to consult the figures and actual facts to discern that she is a great success. Also the discrimination against married women and mothers I'm reading here are unbelievable. Her marital status in no way impacts her credibility as an actress. Learn to separate the art from the artist. Also, the fact that Jun Ji Hyun is a working mother and undoubtedly providing for her child is commendable, though that is none of our business. Lee Min Ho has something to learn from working with such a wonderful actress. She is his senior and undeniably has much more experience in her field. And clearly she is more than capable of working alongside younger actors and creating wonderful work. Fans of his should appreciate that her longevity and success holds more star power. She has more to offer his young career than he has to offer her. Both, with the support of their fans can hopefully enjoy the fruits of their work together. Dismissing one or the other before they've even started to work together is really your loss...

BUT I am super duper happy that he is gonna work with an AWESOME AND CAPABLE writer. She is indeed a great writer. Park Ji Eun is 100 times better thank Kim Eun Sook. I didn't like it when LMH accepted the offer of "The Heirs", because KES dramas always kinda cheesy and boring (Yes, I know she is famous and has high ratings). Well, this isn't just me who thinks like that. If you go read the comments for KES dramas in "Dramabeans", you will see what I mean. ANYWAY, This is a GREAT NEWS! Park Ji Eun is hands down the BEST Korean screenwriter. Her dramas are always so interesting, have refreshing ideas and have high ratings. Although I don't really like long Family dramas, I LOVED "My Husband got a family". It is different from a typical Korean Family drama. If you watch this drama, you will realize how capable she is at making a simple story so interesting.

Fans have been anticipating Lee Min Ho's drama after 2013, Heirs, and for his last and final drama before he enlists, he gets to work with this actress? She's a good actress, but she just doesn't match Lee Min Ho. This is such an aweful pair. What a lost.

He was on City Hunter an action drama which is not something ORDINARY at all. He was on Personal Taste where he acted like a GAY who definitely not a son from a rich family. He was on Faith, a historical drama. Stop judging him based on THE HEIRS, because it's the plot that is boring and it's not Lee Min Ho's fault to be chosen as a HANDSOME & RICH kid because his APPEARANCE definitely suits the role. Lee Min Ho is a good actor and will always be.
