Set in present day South Korea, but under the premise that the country is governed by a constitutional monarchy.

Oh Ssu-Ni (Jang Na-Ra) is a musical actress with a bright personality. Suddenly, she marries Emperor Lee Hyuk (Shin Sung-Rok). There, Oh Ssu-Ni goes up against absolute power of the palace and fights against the power. Meanwhile, she falls in love with Na Wang-Sik (Choi Jin-Hyuk) who is a bodyguard of the imperial family. Na Wang-Sik came to the palace to take revenge on the person responsible for his mother’s death. Due to death of Emperor Lee Hyuk’s grandmother, Oh Ssu-Ni breaks down the royal family with the help of Na Wang-Sik and finds true love.

sgt_doom Jan 23 2023 1:09 am This was an interesting series as the characters are all reprehensible, so no empathy is really generated or invoked for them ----- really an anti–royalist screed?! (I could be mistaken, but that was my read?!)

I am not familiar with other works by the script writer, Kim Sun–Ok, but I enjoyed her work on this! It always mystifies me why certain countries with royals still, like the UK, Netherlands, Scandinavian countries, Thailand and the Middle East (believe Japan to be the exception) still respect their royals as the only reason for their positions is that their ancestors were the most bloodthirsty prolific killers and murderers ---- these are the vile conquerors, after all!

If history books are accurate, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty originally did the Great Doublecross --- he was the commander of the 2nd army, dispatched by the king along with the 1st army to battle against the invading Chinese tribal kingdom (Manchus or another, have forgotten now???) --- but that 2nd army commander doubled back to depose the reining king, leaving the 1st army to get nearly destroyed!

No love for those royals.

The plot at first seems interesting and actually good. Im sure the original plot is that na wang sik end up with the princess.

But the writer decide to extend the eps from 48 to 52 , and decide to change the plot half way through. As a profesional this should not be tolerated since many actors or actress have a pack schedule which result in the absent of choi jin hyuk character in the last 4 eps. I dont understand why they have to extend the plot and turn it into absolute garbage.

K drama fan Jun 17 2021 3:00 am It's an interesting series, but the plot is drawn out across the entire series making it borderline absurd in some instances.

The premise hooks you in at first, but over time in some scenes it becomes really hard to feel for the characters - especially when they make the same mistake over and over. You will go through each emotion at least once.

Due to its popularity, halfway through the drama, it was decided to extend drama from 48 to 52 episodes.

However, Choi Jin Hyuk had signed up for 48 episodes only and his agency, in the early days, had already arranged for him to hold a concert in Taiwan immediately after his completion of 48 episodes; as venue and dates had been fixed, it was difficult to have the concert cancelled.

As this drama was "fresh from the oven" type - that is, this week's 2 episodes produced would be aired the following week, there was not much room to manoeuvre.

As such, the drama script was changed halfway for the demise of Choi Jin Hyuk's character as he would not be around for the last 4 episodes.

Hope this answers all the queries raised, including why "Na Wang-Sik had to die", "Half of this drama was so excellent. But i stop since eps 30 coz the storyline seem weird.", "the end story for wang sik is very weird, it seem wang sik suddenly gone. even last scene not act by Choi Jin-Hyuk just stuntmen i guess." and " along the way I lost the passion to root for its happy ending."

Sofa Apr 11 2021 3:43 am At first I was intrigued by the series. But after a while, the ridiculous plots, there are too many to count, and the stupidity of some characters ruined the series for me. Again and again the characters made the same mistakes. Sometimes they want to kill each other, and then they ‘trust’ each other again. You would say they know their enemies by now, but unfortunately that is not the case. I really enjoyed the ending, though. After all the things that had happened, I must say it was a wise decision by Oh Ssy-nu, who faced the formidable challenge of saving herself in the complicated household of the imperial palace, to transform the empire into a republic. She saw the complexity of the inherent problems, which were almost impossible to chance. And now that Korea is a Republic, former crown princess Oh Ah-Run is finally able to enjoy her childhood while the notorious (former) Empress Dowager Kang spends her days in prison.

Fey101 Jun 02 2020 3:13 pm Great acting by all the cast.If you are looking for a histo-modern, plus thriller,action,romantic and light comedy drama,this is the right one.But I also have to wonder about the role of Wang Shik,it's like they just phased it out.For someone who played such a major role he deserved a major exit or even a great memorial on his grave. Even the death of the Emperor was so unexpected,anyway I guess that's the thing about thrillers!

I'm so busy in school. But this series amazed me so much, when it is first aired in Philippines through GMA Channel, it caught my attention and I do lend time to watch, it is so midnight and although I have school tomorrow hehe But it affects me, and sad to I don't have phone to use and watch this in advance. So I decided to wake early as I can about 2am Ph.time just to borrowed my brother's phone and watch. Just wanna share hehe Back to the story, I do really love this. Because while watching this mixed emotions you may feel before, during and even after each and every episodes. After my struggles just to watch this is so worth it. And I want to Congratulate All have been part of of this series, even it is too late but You Really Did Great Job. Congratulations again. I've learned a lot here. Thank you.

SPOILERS.... But there's something comes trouble to my mind, Do Na Wang Shik really died? Because it did not show clear things there to satisfy me or not even sink in in my mind. I thought before I finish this, its either Wang Shik or Hyuk will be with Sunny til the end but my hopes got down when I finished watching. But its okay. They're live happy and I hope Sunny also hehe.. There's more I want to ask did Empress Dowager and Kang Seo hee if I'm not mistaken , are Executed? But in the last episode why Empress Dowager was alive and claiming again her highness ? One more thing is there any part 2 of this series? Just asking and hoping ahaha. That's All. I should have searched for the translation of the ost by Gaho hehehe. Anyways, I might have expected a different set of events for the drama but I guess it was how and it should be as it is. Nothing like what the staff made would make it better so congrats congrats TLE! And I really love the actors, they're really good! Sung Rok, Jin Hyuk, Nara, Eun Kyung daebak! First, Shin Sung Rok is such an AAAAAAAA+++++++++ actor! Hahaha I mean, he definitely deserve that Best Actor award!!! Such a versatile actor!! Second, I think I've never watch a series where the genre falls to such extremes of a heavy one to a light one such that one moment, you have to take a tight grip onto your seat and then one moment, you'll laugh hilariously (maybe just because it's Sung Rok's magic) I mean, maybe there are other series like thjt, I just took notice of it in this drama. Stechira Feb 16 2020 8:21 am This drama deserves it's rating ? Sure the beginning was a bit slow and you will feel like dropping it but don't, It gets better. Nara character had a lot of naive moments but that led to her growth so it is all good. I know a lot of people are complaining about it due to some parts that they could have done better but I don't regret watching. I even got some of my friends that are non-kdrama watchers to watch this and they were hooked.

lol Jan 12 2020 10:59 am This drama was definitely not my cup of tea. It's a little childish and the plot is riddled with inconsistencies. I admit i loved the first few episodes but afterward, it got too much. If you're used to well-thought-out and detailed dramas like Memories of Alhambra, Descendants of the Sun, Task Force 38, W, etc, then you won't like this. But if you just want to pass time and want a lot of plot twists, then check it out.

How they ended his character made no sense/felt forced and no one even cared about his death wtf?? This drama was awesome until the last 4 eps when Choi Jin Hyuk left the drama.

Excepting the actors, Ahn Nae-Sang, Hwang Young-Hee, Jeon Su-Kyeong and Oh Ah-Rin, who also played in "Band of Sister" but with some other character names. And Oh Ah-Rin... She is a good child actress in special at how she plays in "The Last Empress"... When I see her with Kim Dasom in "The Last Empress", is like she was taking revenge on her older sister for what she did to her in "Band of Sisters".

I've watched all of his dramas I can find, and when he appears in a suit, it's a feast for the eyes. Just can't stand Shin because of all the bad guys he's played, so I won't watch any drama he's in from this point forward.

leanne Aug 15 2019 4:52 pm i think this is by far my favourite drama of all time. the whole time while i was watching this i remember feeling a rollercoaster of emotions. this is the only drama where none of the episodes felt like fillers, and i genuinely enjoyed each episode. each one was full of action packed scenes, some romance and a lot of suspense. i really loved the character development of ari, and her bond with the empress was so cute. also i wish that wang shik had a better ending :( his character was just killed off which i get bc the actor who plays him had a conflicting schedule but i felt like there so much potential for a better ending for him. anyways i adore this drama and i wish i could watch it for the first time again.

Roro Jul 03 2019 8:36 am 10/10 best drama 2019! I so hate lee hyuk at first especially when he broke sunny’s heart so, I was shipping wang shik since he always save the empress. I wouldn’t mind if sunny end up with wangshik but she and hyuk have a great chemistry! I am just disappointed how wangshik story ended because he just vanished so quick. It was late when sunny knew. No goodbyes to him and funeral. So sad. Only yura had a happy ending when she should also be in jail.

What I don't like about this drama is that the last episodes were somehow..Like was that really Na wang shik? He just died like he was an additional cast...The writers did not try for the last episodes :( It felt like they were rushing the drama too..The ending was unfair to me but It's a great drama overall!

It could have been better if they gave him another chance with the empress. The empress didn't love na Wang shim at all. Its just friendship. :) :) :)

The first episodes hook you up real good, and you follow the roller coaster of twists and turns to these characters, along the way, the major characters flesh out, and you begin to root for Jang Nara's Oh Sunny, the Emperor, the Body Guard, and wait for impending doom on the Empress Dowager and Chief Temptress Yu Ra. However, the twists become insane, so much so that the characters become cartoonish trying to follow this pace, and soon episode after episode you have basically their yelling at the top of their lungs at each other, with your spill of injection needles, gun shots, and hitting bricks. The high octane, psycho blend turns the drama into...a non-stop joke fest where all rules of logic are out the window! At the very end, you marvel at Jang Nara as the true artist she is who can sob convincingly despite anything thrown at her, SSR for his wicked set of eyes, CJH for all the bricks on his head he's had to endure (and his amazing action sequences), and Elijah Lee's every loud breath of surprise. Memorable, yes, but would've preferred the characters to be less cartoonish. The little princess was sweet!

For me the drama is magnificent because you can not predict what is going to happen next. Back to the reason why I paused my drama and came to comment, is because of Queen/Empress dowager, she is amazing, her acting is another level. She made me laugh so many times with her reactions. She can be serious, she can pretend she can play any character, that’s an amazing actor right there.

I really wanted to give this drama a perfect score but since Ep.46 I really felt they were rushing things I don't know if it has something to do with the Actors shooting schedule but I really hope the ending would have been different. Na Wang-Sik didn't deserve to die like that knowing his character he would do more & he will not let his guard down. Am also confused with the Emperor is he suffering from a multiple personality? I really wish the Writes could have shown he was able to change in the end & didn't Die. Also whats the deal with Min Yoo-Ra I really thought she was doing the Revenge thing because of Kang Joo-Seung & I really don't get why she suddenly became nice to Sunny. Also where is Oh Hel-Ro when the Crown Prince is recovering? Also what ever happen to this people Chief Joo & Princess Sojin I really felt sorry for her the most part.

Guys! I know that the ending is a bit disappointing, but they have released an epilogue of this series, and surprisingly Lee Hyuk is still alive! We didn't get much of it, seeing that Shin Sung Rok actually plays another character as a huge fan of Oh Sunny, but towards the end, we can actually see that he's actually Lee Hyuk! And I pretty much believe that he's still alive. Here's my theory:

During the shooting scene, we can see that Empress Dowager shot him three times, and the fatal shot towards Lee Hyuk's chest, might have just been protected by the chief guard's pin that was attached to his chest. We totally see that the final shot really hit the chest where the pin at, and Lee Hyuk might have survived all this time.

However, Lee Hyuk could have decided to change his identity, as a normal citizen with different name, just to not get shamed or founded of his true blood as an emperor. He loves Sunny so much, and he decides to stay low in order to live a happy life with Sunny. In the epilogue, you can see how they are so lovely, and Sunny truly shows her love for the very first time to Lee Hyuk hence the state of denial

Such strong characters, twistable story. My mind was blown. Slightly dramatic, opera soapy but overall is great. Directing is great. I agreed with most commenters here, the ending was kinda shit. I get it, Wang Shik had it coming but still, it was shit for last episodes. Sunny should've stopped the dowager from shooting him twice, shame on both the emperor to not use bulletproof vest and the empress's delay to act on it. This damage dose has left some of us feeling uneasy, much we needed a damage control by seeing a video of epilogue (what, was it uncut scene or made up?) as damage control to our emotions. Season two? Not really, it's over but an official epilogue is what we need, please.

He is just a dumb guy who easily gets fooled by people he trusts, who were the real evil ones (such as his mother and min yoo ra. That's why he is so torn and confused. When surrounded and influenced by the right people such as the empress, he's actually a decent guy. Dumb, but decent. Na Wang Sik should have ended up with princess sojin.

Just when she though Hyuk was going to die, and Hyuk uttered "i love you",the empress replied back, "i love you, too." She loved hyuk but did not forget the things he did, and hyuk has a lifetime to earn her forgiveness....

In the epilogue, as sunny turns away from the palace, we see ari and the emperor waiting for her, waving. Hyuk is now a server at the chicken restaurant, but is finally content. No longer the emperor and the empress, theycan finally live happily ever after as regular people

As a matter of fact they talked about his character but didn’t show him, they even had a car chase with him but didn’t show his face at all. Also on the last episode when Wang Sik supposedly stoped the bomb from further damage by using his body, why didn’t they show his face or at least a “flash back memorial” like they did for Emperor Hyuk (who btw was 2nd male lead). Anyways he had a flash back when he was dying, (you know the flash backs to look back on their life before they face death) but why didn’t Wang Sik get one? I mean Wang Sik is the main character, and then all of a sudden he’s cut off as if he wasn’t an important character. And even at the end, when justice is served, where is Wang Sik’s justice? The success of defeating the royal family wouldn’t have been successful if it weren’t for Wang Sik. I hated how they just killed him off on the last two episodes leaving us with no closure. It’s not fair. Overall great drama, but hated how the writers killed off Wang Sik and then didn’t show how important he was especially to the Empress due to there close relationship.

Ok here’s my 2cents, I love the ending , I think it’s appropiate , pheha will die no matter what since he did so much sin he needs to redeem himself but i admit it was cruel way to die.the only weird end , they killed nws , CJH supposed to be main lead he needs to be present until last ep. if the writer can make him coma by hugging the bomb tried to save that one meeting or whatever, instead of being dead , the emperor still can pretend to be him and the story still will be the same ending. What makes audience upset was CJH can’t appear to wrap up the series while they put him as main cast. if he appears ALIVE on finale even for only couple minutes , I think the reviewers will be happier ( we still can’t ship bodyguard and empress tho, she still legally married ) But overall this is one of the best drama I ever seen . It’s unique ,weird , little over the top , but you guys should watch it . Well rounded cast , it deserved high rating .

The true story of the last Korean royalty should not be forgotten. I got really tired of people pulling out their handguns, and threatening to shoot everyone. Is this love affair with handguns a new Korean drama trope? Nice to see Park Won-Suk again. She shone in Hundred Year Inheritance, the best mother-in law drama ever. They even managed to keep suspense for 50 episodes by excellent writing, not some phony gun suspense.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the chemistry of Jang Nara with Shin Sungrok than with Choi Jinhyuk. If only the Emperor wasn't so messed up, I would've rooted for him to have a happy ending with Sunny. I wish Jang Nara and Shin Sungrok would meet again in a different drama, maybe a romantic comedy? I think they'd be a good match. Also, Oh Ahrin is also such a sweetheart. Such a wonderful young actress!

The weird part is I feel pityful for Lee Nyuk, since he was emotionally abused by the father and taught by his twisted mother and therefore became what he is today. The greatest villain would be Min Yu Ran and Seong Ka Hee, and their acting is superb. But is sad that why Wang Shik will not appear in the last few eps of the drama, isnt he suppose to be the lead? Sob sob..... Of course Oh Sunny... is known for her good acting no doubt.

They're able to absorb our attention fully during each of episodes. I couldn't leave nor give up this drama although feel annoyed by the story, because I enjoy their theatrical acting very much !!! Even the little ones (princess ARI & Dong Sik) perform amazingly here. The totality of all actors and actress and they treat it as if it's a masterpiece project for them, make this drama reach big success!!!

Really want them to end up behind bars and pay their dues (death for them is not justifiable). Tbh i don't know about you guys but it's been quite sometime that a drama is this much intriguing to me, every episode was amazing (i hope the last 2 episodes would be the climax that i wanted for if not the better). I really like Elijah but her acting here wasnt good at all. Also the production itself lacks a lot of thing.. like the blood which isnt even real and looks too fake. But then again i think all the actors are very charismatic like the Empress, the Emperor who is very sexy when he smiles (love his drama when he was a flight attendant). Also the little princess and the father and sister of the Empress are very funny and makes the drama flows nicely. I do like the drama, but labeling it a masterpiece is an overstament.

I am just happy that I've reached the 44th episode today and I am really looking forward to this show's ending although I am not rushing it as I still don't want it to end.... I am definitely going to miss it.....

I think this drama is a big success.. The plot, various genre in one, strong characters (lol, what kind of review is this). And make us in love-hate feeling with the characters here. Not only Lee Hyuk, but Oh Sunny also (at the several of the begining eps, I read some dislike comments about her). Who's next? Min Yura? Hehe..

And the sweet thing is, Ari finally meet her match - Dong Shik :D Hope Ari will become a wise and kind-hearted lady.

Oh, is that maybe Kang Hee also the Grandma's murderer? Because she was also in Grandma's room that night..

His place is in jail or in a mental institution at the very least. Hyuk has to pay for his crimes. Sunny and Wang Sik belong together, they deserve justice and will prevail (still upset at the production for failing to develop their romance to its full potential/Where is the passion? It's way too subtle and underwhelming). I really have a love/hate relationship with this show (I'm often on the verge of dropping it but CJH is holding me back and I'm not even his fan *weird I know*)

His humane side is slowly emerging as he finds himself drawn to Oh Sunny. He also adds some comic relief from time to time which is really fun to watch. However, there is some delay in releasing ep.33 & 34. Can't wait for this drama, one of my favourites so far.❣Jang Nara & Choi Jin Hyuk are great leads too.

Sure, a lot of people may think that the plot twists and the whole story is ridiculous but it’s addicting. It’s far from. reality but the characters made my blood boil. Also if you’re not good on handling cliffhangers I suggest that you should just wait until this drama is done or else you won’t be able to function properly while waiting for the next episodes.

Anyway, I highly recommend this drama, especially for those "tense-thriller-mystery" drama fans. Since 2011, I started following Korean dramas, this is the fifth drama that makes me really excited to watch.

If you want your children to learn morals while watching TV, sorry, but you're just being delusional. Teaching moral values is the family's job, not the scriptwriters'.

This drama is crazy entertaining. Objectively speaking, this "trashy" writing is achieving what "high quality" writing can't. What is the purpose of a tv show? Getting high ratings and becoming popular. Why do people tune in? Because they are looking for entertainment. Some people just want to take a breather from reality because they are tired of it. This writer knows how to capitalize on that. She made the drama both rudimental and dynamic which helps the viewers forget about the outside world and switch off their tired brains after a long day. I'd say she's pretty brilliant for a trashy writer.

I'm sitting on the edge of my chair every week. It's crazy good, suspenseful & entertaining. Sometimes, the plot may not make sense but,still, this k-drama draws me to watch it every week. I can't stand the scheming & cruel Min Yu-ra, which means Elijah Lee is nailing her role too.Thank goodness there are 48 mini-eps, so there is still a long way to enjoy this drama.

kdramafan Dec 27 2018 9:55 pm Everyone is talking about how this show isn't about being morally good. I don't know if we are watching the same show, but I think you are watching it very wrongly. Yes, everything is almost always negative, with a little twist and (somewhat, since the jokes are'nt that easy to get) funny part, but everything all points to mystery, thrill, action and a great plot line that all leads to a righteous victory at the end (even though it hasn't ended yet, very far from it). I can already see it, even the end of the latest episode 24 "Yu Ra's demise", already gives a hint of hope for our great Empress Jang Na-ra and Chief Guard Choi Jin-hyuk to be the one to win in the end.

I'd have to credit Lee Elijah's potrayal of Yu Ra though, her acting improved so much. But compared to Jang Na-ra, she lacks so much but it is understandable since her character isn't that important. Our main leads, Jang Na-ra, Choi Jin-Hyuk and the "great" emperor Shin Sung-Rok overdid their very best in acting to say the least. Honorable mentions are Empress Dowager, Princess Ari,Oh Hel-Ro, Crown PrinceYi-yoon.

Jang Nara's acting was great and she should be like that. if you are looking for moral or realistic drama than this drama is NOT. If you’re looking for a drama which portrays good all the time then you’re going to have to look elsewhere- just like not every drama has to be about romance, not every drama has to have an overly rightheous or positive point to it. Sometimes people just watch dramas for the sake of watching it and not to learn anything! The bloody synopsis is that they both seek revenge - I don’t know what world you live in, but revenge isn’t all roses and it’s far from being the “right” thing to do. Also you can’t completely judge it’s moral/values when it hasn’t even finished yet, the evil may never prosper in the end, who knows?? We don’t! If you’re going to watch this drama a) know what you’re getting into, instead of complaining halfway through. And b) take it for what it is.

Y’all got me heated up with some of these ridiculous comments. If you don’t like the drama that is perfectly fine, like the previous commenter said it’s not by force but seriously get a grip - it’s a drama! A makjang one at that. Sunny’s character is not meant to be smart from the get go, that wouldn’t be as appealing, it’s on episode 11 (out of 24!) and we already see development and her resolve growing. Also, tell me you’re not going to be caught up in your feelings after facing such a betrayal, near death, being accused of murder amongst other things. And tbh she’s not even stupid ya’ll are just expecting too much because you’re watching from your laptop screens and not actually in her shoes. Jang Nara’s acting (all of the casts acting) is fine, it’s just your own opinion or maybe y’all should go and audition for the part since you have so much to say about it. You can have your opinions, we all can but let’s not insult the actors like that, they’re all seasoned and well experienced enough.

Someone also said something like this isn’t realistic within a Royal family? Lmao, okay this crap can happen in a normal family let alone the royal one. Adultery? Murder? Lies? It happens!! Maybe not in the same extra way this drama conveys, but it’s not impossible you just don’t hear of it.. for a reason! *sighs* I’m done.

Dramaholic Dec 27 2018 1:12 pm I don't know why people say that just because a character it's naive at the beginning and not quite smart cannot develop and get more astute since the history it's done in order for the character to grow and obviously, you are not going to change overnight. The big people started being naive and because of hardships and experiences, it's what,t made them became more astute and vivacious people. And of course, she will not get revenge so easily or fast since she has to learn first while all the other characters were already evil from the beginning and knew how those things work. Even though I also would like to see improvement in the empress, I also can understand some aspects necessary for the plot to work. Obviously, it's choir exaggerated even the evil characters sometimes do not make sense, but that's why it is supposed to be a drama, in which the things are over exaggerated not only the expressions or movements but also the cheesy romence etc. But anyways it's always easy to criticize.

Well this week started to be having big development in the character so I'm quite satisfied, compared to when I was watching some years ago (well i have been watching dramas almost 10 or 11 years so I guess I developed some experience about histories and plots haha) the drama called Endless Love I can say in that history it was quite painful to watch because even though the protagonist was a smart and tenacious girl, always got the worst treatment, when she accomplished something, the writers always had to put something worst to happen to her, even rape >.< and the antagonist always wins until the last 2 episodes out of I think it was 32, and just had an easy end at the end, not even apologizing or regretting anything. And the second lead syndrome it real in that drama too T.T until the end it was confusing to see who was first and who was second.

The plot may/will be outrageous, impossible or even ridiculous at times, if you don’t have the capability to enjoy the drama for what it is then simply leave. Bruh, the acting is meant to be like that, the plot is also meant to be like that! If you don’t understand then now you know, if you still can’t handle it then that’s fine it’s not by force but objectively it doesn’t make it a crap show simply because you don’t like it or the way it has been executed. If you’re new to such a genre the first few eps may be overwhelming - in fact I even thought the first 2 (1 whole) episodes was a bit too haphazard and hard to follow for a start, but it really did get better with time. There’s a reason why it’s currently being enjoyed by many- look at the ratings. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea which is understandable, but it’s not right to mock or belittle the show simply because it doesn’t meet what you think a standard drama should meet.

I’d also like to agree with comments below which say that the Empress does not have to be smart from the beginning, i agree she hasn’t made a few of the right choices but she’s not stupid and she’s stepping up her game. She’s becoming more dominant and executing her role wonderfully. I’d like to see some of you turn into revenge specialists, making a right decision at every turn smh. That’s all I have to say for now anyways, many of us are enjoying the drama and some of the stuff y’all write can put someone off watching this drama who may (or may not) end up liking it.

Even though its make me very nervous that she not able to fight back. I hope the character is continous like who is she now such like an innocent girl and answer every question with logic and always calm, not like before she bark with confident but nothing!! oh my God, what a good drama. I watch all korean drama so I did know which one is the best as a viewer.some drama, its hard to get what is the point, a quite bored. but then, its from my opinion guys!

But how is it smart to expect an unexperienced young woman who grew up underprivileged, is thrown into a completely foreign environment and at the same time is in a state of shock to be so? A character needs to be realistic to be credible don't you think. Otherwise maybe watching 'Superwoman' would be more satisfying.

For my point of view, the crew did a good job in casting all the actors. I love how our JNR looks so innocent. Her acting is improving. I can really feel her fangirl feeling marrying her dream prince charming and how heartbroken she is when she found out his cheating with the hot lady Chief Assistant & the real reason of the marriage. :"""(.. Arrrggh don't let me start on Yu Ra. She so desperate and evil. I hate her so much! Lol. I pity the emperor childhood, but how can he be so weak and evil? Huh.... CJH I'm counting on u! I can't wait to see Oh Sunny & u team up!

p/s. The Queen/grandma part is soo sad. I cried a river when JNR cried like a baby. It hurts!

I followed the drama to give a chance but not worthy. Sure you can watch but what value are you gaining from this. God forbid your children watch this drama. So a mere acting girl who could not even get the lead on her own wants to reveal the truth behind and go against the BIG guys. They are emperors and have it all. Of course, the story is going to make a way for her but it does not make sense that a naive girl like her suddenly becomes smart, talented and able to go against the many nasty tricks of the BAD guys. At least, she could have been more intelligent, more smart, knows how to fight, then I would have agreed that Oh sunny can actually do something to hold up against the big ones. What you think you can stand up to them for long. Oh sunny survived round 1, now round 2 of the madness is gonna start.

She is fool not knowing anything..she like puppet who don't know how to discern characters of the people. When you are into that position, everybody knows that Empress has strong character and intelligent. Her characters and appearance should vary. She should have been better because she was getting dressed and studied. Even if the Emperor inlove to others, the Emperor must be fell because she is beautiful than others. The bodyguard who is handsome will be attracted to Empress. She have to be different someday when she discovered that Emperor has other partner. Hurt could be changed..She eventually prove that she is different. The bodyguard Na Wang Sik and Emperor will fight for the Empress because of love. But in the end Na Wang Sik would be chosen as her long partner.

Even CERSEI from GAME OF THRONES loved her children though how evil she may be but here she is just an insult to the motherhood. And the emperor and her mistress scenes have turned from intriquing to annoying. I can't tolerate how everyone treats the empress especially the emperor. I hate the way the MIN YU RA keeps calling PHEHA PHEHA for every small thing. I hate it when i see OH SUNNY go all weak in front of the emperor or cry behind after showing off strong in face. I still have hopes on this drama that they will bring out oh sunny as a strong character rather than being such an emotional girl. I wish she turns into a emotionless girl to tackle with the ways of the palace. BUT I LOVE THIS DRAMA A LOT BECAUSE THE CHARACTERS ARE MAKING ME HATE THEM OR EMPATHY THEM OR LOVE THEM. IT'S EVERYTHING. EVERY ACTOR'S ACTING IS ON POINT. AND I DON'T GET IT WHY THE RATINGS ARE LOWER THAN SOME DRAMAS WHICH ARE NOT WORTH WATCHING. The plot twists are a little too illogical, characters are written mainly to drive the plot forward but the actors are top notch in the execution. I honestly don't like a single character in this show, including the supposedly lovable Oh Sunni but that's ok, I think that's probably its intention.

If you want to watch a highly entertaining trainwreck, I recommend this drama.

Compared to the other dramas I’m currently watching, waiting for the episodes of The Last Empress is torture. That’s how much I’m addicted to this drama. I’m watching with my mum & she loves it too!

I love this drama also because of Choi Jin Hyuk. I find him charming & manly but those eyes makes my heart skip a beat. I’ve been watching him since Pasta and love him since then.

Jang Nara, I’m speechless. She’s just amazing. I felt that her character & her acting makes her more relatable. Just a normal girl who’s bubbly and clumsy at times. But when she’s sad, I could really feel how hurt she is.

I’m also sad as it reminds me of Princess Diana. How she was a beautiful smart women and of course happy to be marrying a prince. But the royal family was actually using her. I love unsolved mysteries and watch them on youtube like buzzfeed unsolved.

I really do hope the corpse in Ep1 is not Sunny

Wang Sik should not only get angry w/the Emperor,He Should also Dissolve&Forget his feelings for YooRa since BOTH YooRa and Emperor Lee Hyuk are STILL TRULLY INLOVE w/Each other and are only faking in case of his High Empress mother who are until now, still very against his relationship on YooRa. Empress Sunny should really abandon the Emperial Family and Go fight together w/Wang Sik who is her personal Bodyguard.

NOTE: •For Those who are Saying&Hoping that Emperor Lee

&Sunny will be the pair, in my opinion i think it is 
impossible since YooRa has already Hypnotized .
Emperor Lee, for him to be so much in loved in her, to forget that he already has a wife which is Oh Sunny.

•And based on the Story plot, i think Nah Wang Sik is the pair up of Oh Sunny, since, While He is still on process of destroying the Royal palace, he then will realized that his most loved girl Yoo Ra is not inloved w/him anymore for she then chooses the Emperor before him. And because of that he will also get angry& do revenge on both YooRa&Emperor Lee w/the help of the girl that he then realize that he trully is in love with which is Oh Sunny.

But on a serious note...the real drama is starting finally from 5th episode, this is why you need to hang around and trust Jang Na Ra, she never disappoints you with her choices. Jang Na Ra's happy virus vibe is contagious, I couldn't help but smile when she smiles oblivious to the evilness around her, I am sure she is going to be bad ass when she finally sees the real faces behind the masks of Emperor and Min Yu Ra. Also, the Dowager Empress is clearly going to warm up to her since Oh Sunny keeps attacking her maternal feelings.

Sadly, I keep reading comments that this drama is a parody of all dramas and its absurd. I respect everyone's opinions but there are some of us who are really enjoying these unrealistic, hilarious, predictable cliche plots! NOt everyone want to watch romance/ thriller/ mystery/ political/ realistic dramas always. For me, this drama cleanses my soul, makes me smile and forget about reality. I screamed when I found out that Jang Na Ra was back with a new drama. Also, I am sure there are many who enjoy dramas like these since its doing well with ratings in Korea.

I would expecting it to put the monarchy in the positive shade, however what I saw to be an insulting mockery portrayal of a royal family. That one aside, I'll just watch it and see how the drama goes... Not at all a fan of the director's and the writer's previous works though, tbh...

Guinevere Nov 23 2018 12:30 pm The premise interested me enough to want to start this drama (+Jang Nara and Choi Jin Hyuk as leads was definitely the main draw) but after watching the first 2 episodes, I don't know what to think anymore...disappointing start to say the least. Cartoonish villains and dumb heroes in a makjang fest. Many scenes made me facepalm and eyeroll to be honest... Well, I will give it 2 more episodes before dropping it (Choi Jin Hyuk didn't appear yet so) but the leads better smarten up a bit and the craziness tones down.......

Kira Nov 23 2018 12:42 am I'm not sure why this was such an acclaimed drama leading into its premiere, even with top actors/writers/etc. I just watched the first two episodes and it's probably by far the worst drama opening I've watched in years, I know the main two leads aren't in episodes 1-2 much -however this was so terrible I will be sure to not continue watching, moreso I am disgusted. Good luck to those continuing.

WAAH.. but in the 1st episode, i think stephanie lee will be join with the royal family, but then i dont think about that again, and her character name Hello, so cute.. congrats make me excited with the next episode.. waah from hot scene to tragic scene..

sf Nov 22 2018 2:27 am The first episode was very good even without the main actors. I like Choi Jin-Hyuk but I don't like Jang Na-Ra at all. So, if this drama would have been about a story between the emperor, his assistant and the bodyguard, I would have liked it more.

Jang Na-Ra had like small scenes in the beginning & Choi Jin-Hyuk wasn't even in it at all! It kind of bothers me a bit when the leads show up way less than the side characters but I'll still give it a chance after seeing ep 2.

In drama Fated to Love You, Jin Hyuk became third wheel to main lead couple and that really made me hate his character. Then in this drama, they became pair and that made me feel really-really unacceptable.

CJHfan Nov 09 2018 3:14 pm Ah, I was so excited to hear Choi Jin Hyuk would be doing this drama so soon after Devilish Charm. My only complaint about that whole drama is that the female lead couldn't decide whether she hated him or loved him half the time. One episode she'd tell him off saying they had nothing to do with each other, then she'd cutely call him and be all shy in the next episode. Once the female lead finally stopped flipping back and forth between telling him he's an unloveable bastard, and flirting with him, I could really get into it. Anyway, I loved CJH in Tunnel, and also in Devilish Charm. I'm sure he'll be great in this one too.
