Plot

Lee Geum-Ja (Lee Young-Ae) is released from prison after serving 13 years for kidnapping and murdering a young boy. A small crowd, including a preacher (Kim Byung-Ok), await for her. The preacher offers her the traditional tofu as a symbol of her new, reformed life, but Lee Geum-Ja tosses it aside and walks away. Now that she has her freedom, she can put the pretenses aside and get down to business. Lee Geum-Ja is out to exact revenge upon Mr. Paek (Choi Min-Sik), the man that framed her and ruined her life.

Lee Geum-Ja begins her quest by visiting and recruiting the help of former prisoners she bonded with in prison. She also gets a job at a bakery. Geum-Ja is also reunited with her now adopted daughter Jenny (Kwon Ye-Young).

Notes

"Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" concludes director Park Chan-Wook's revenge trilogy (story lines are not related).

view all the povs, not just yours Aug 06 2019 6:40 am @Rainbow Fish your statement makes sense, but you know, when it comes to children, parents can be merciless. this film might look meaningless and did not makes sense, but in fact it shows how far a creature named humans can act horrible and cold-heartedly murder other human, no matter how normal the person is, if it's related to something that means a lot to them then (sometimes) no mercy at all...

Rainbow Fish May 21 2016 10:01 pm The two previous revenge movies "Mr. Vengeance" and "Oldboy" by Chan-Wook Park were glorious, thoughtful and provocative. However with "Lady Vangeance," we can see how petty and disgusting vengeance films can get. I give this movie a big thumbs down for the obnoxious storyline which lead to the film's ultimate failure. Chan-Wook Park's previous characters were courageous and justified in their revenge. On the other hand, Geum-ja Lee is manipulative and unlikeable even though she had every rights to carry out her revenge. Here is the most pretentious scene of all: Geum-ja Lee brings together a group of parents whose children died in the hands of Mr. Baek. Geum-ja Lee then plays a video tape that shows how the children have died. Geum-ja Lee inspires the parents to torture and kill Mr. Baek. The failure of this scene is that the scene is played subjectively in favor of Geum-ja Lee's character. In one of the final scenes, Geum-ja Lee sees the ghost of the grown up Won-mo smoking a cigarette. He indicates through his actions that he does not approve of her behavior. In the last scene, Geum-ja Lee is seen with her daughter and her teenage lover. This is perhaps the best scene of the movie because of the cinematography. But overall, the pretentious philosophical messages on revenge leads to the film's failure to communicate to the audience and the film becomes meaningless.
