Hwang Si-Mok (Cho Seung-Woo) had brain surgery when he was a child, which caused him to lack emotion. Now, Hwang Si-Mok works as a prosecutor. He is rational, but cold and lonely. He is also one of the only prosecutors not involved in corruption. One day, a dead body is thrown in front of him. He meets Police Lieutenant Han Yeo-Jin (Bae Doo-Na) at a murder crime scene. They work together to eradicate corruption at the prosecutor's office and solve a serial murder case.

Tina Feb 02 2023 9:58 am 6/10 I found it boring honestly. Maybe it's because I've seen better series...the killer is always the one who is shown least as the possible suspect. I don't know why all crime series follow this predictable norm. It's highly overrated, it honestly did not need 16 episodes (season 1). Some characters even have roles that I still don't get to this day (eg. Kim Jung Bon, I really don't get why this character is relevant to the series). The title of the series also does not help. I won't be watching Season 2. This is just my honest opinion.

Troy Oct 24 2021 8:41 pm Overrated. I had high expectations for the show and failed to meet my standards. Bae Doo-Na was incredible in this but Cho Seung-Woo's character is intolerable. I can't even understand how he was able to get away with the numbers of times he invades Dong-Jae's office, continuously suspects his superior despite no evidence and leaves Yeo-Jin while talking. For someone who's supposed to not have feelings, his thinking is lacking. The director always had him one step ahead of Dong-Jae too which is annoying.

Scene: He is jogging at night when he receives the song, stops and listens to part of the song, then continues jogging. Meanwhile we see Eun-soo at home hanging up the sweater to dry (that she borrowed from him) earlier that same evening while listening to the same song on wireless headphones.

In this show there is nothing to complain about except what was i thinking not watching this show back then! The main plot is carried all throughout the story and pulls the events together at the end. It asks a lot of moral questions especially the one towards the end. I like Si-Mok's personality and his friendship with YeoJin. The acting, direction and screenplay all contribute to this drama's perfection. Now i hope season 2 is just as good. Just finished ep1.

Ashley Dec 24 2020 8:38 am I loved the first season. The storyline was fantastic and it held my attention all the way through. I couldn’t look away from my screen. Season 2 however, not so much. I felt like there were way too many filler episodes, dialogue, and characters. It seemed to drag on for so long, about nothing. It didn’t have anywhere near the same momentum as the 1st season. It wasn’t bad, but it also wasn’t too memorable. It really pains me to even say this, because the actors are all amazing.

This is full of suspense and brilliantly acted by cho Seung Woo and doo-na, both 40 year olds and seasoned actors. Such a change. So well directed, bringing in a great support cast and many sub plots that gradually came together. Needed more study into Si-Mok’s brain condition and hopefully a little romance, not too much, in season 2. I wonder why he was sent away at the end, was it to let things die down?

Very gripping, Cho Seung Woo a marvellous actor, Doo-na great and the wife role. Well done. Hope Season 2 is as good.

Alexey Sep 15 2020 4:50 am I like to write reviews while I'm in the middle of watching. Im on the 7th episode. I really like the directing of the drama. But I dont seem to get hooked. For some reason it's quite boring for me. I still dont know what will happen next, but it looks like I dont really care. Just cant concentrate on it. There just too much of intrigue and dialogues, but nothing emotional I quite liked about kdramas is happening. If I wanted blatant faces and dull storytelling, I'd be watching American or European detectives. But Im picking kdramas for a reason - for something only kdramas has. And it just doesn't seem to be here. Or maybe if I didnt watch other bunch of kdramas, maybe I'd feel different. I liked first episodes, but now its 7th episode and I'm loosing the interest.

Is there a fear that the youth of Korea will be corrupted if such a character is favorably recognized? He was part of a great cast, and he rose above three of my favorites, Bae Doo-Na, Yoo Jae-Myung, and Shin Hye-Sun.

I was around episode 4-6 something when I decided to stop watching it. The plot's really an eye catching, the reviews are good, so I really had my hopes up high. I'm sorry to say this but it's really not my type. The story-line's progress and character development were too slow for me. Since I've seen lot's of outstanding action/thriller/suspense/mystery dramas, I can easily comprehend and foretell the story and ending. But for this one, I really can't grasp myself to the story. It's more like kind of difficult and plodding drama?

Also the staff working in the office of Twang Shi Mok should have given the envelope Choi Young threw into the cupboard as she us not qualified to think for Twang Shi Mol. Anyway I enjoyed the story. Cho Seung-Woo is brilliant as Hwang Shi-Mok, a stoic prosecutor with a razor-sharp mind and the emotional intelligence of a teaspoon. He tends to neglect the feelings of whoever he interacts with, and sometimes it's impossible to decide whether to admire his intelligence or call him out for being a jerk. Since his antics stem from a brain condition that soured his relationship with his friends and family as a child, it seems Shi-Mok has simply given up on personal relationships since then, choosing to focus on his career instead. As a result, he's outstanding at his job, but plenty of scenes of him sitting in his dark apartment show that deep down, he feels lonely.

Enter the magnificent Bae Doo-Na. She plays Han Yeo-Jin, a courageous and principled policewoman who, despite her kind heart, is certainly no pushover. She is compassionate and extremely capable, which makes her one of my favorite female characters to ever grace the screen. While initially put off by Shi-Mok's cold attitude, she soon figures out he is one of few morally upright people she can trust. I love their resulting dynamic, with Yeo-Jin largely accepting Shi-Mok's many quirks, and him warming up to being part of a team.

If you like a big plot twist, the end of episode 12 in particular will floor you. However, rather than aiming for pure shock value, many of the developments were foreshadowed very subtly - which also makes rewatching the show a joy. The suspense is ever-present and enhanced by the atmospheric soundtrack (no, not the K-pop insert songs, the actual BGM). All of the actors play their roles to perfection, and it's no surprise that quite a few of them show up in the writer's next K-drama, "Life" (2018).

The only thing I regret after watching this show is that it's ruined all other K-dramas for me. The cast with their on-screen chemistry and the consistently good writing have set the bar impossibly high.

I am hoping to see them get closer in "Stranger 2"... The supporting cast is all excellent. The plot is intricate and satisfying, with many surprise twists. Best of all, this series has a stable and strong moral core, and delivers terrific emotional justice. This is really one of my favorite series ever, and I've watched a lot of good ones...

The storyline is amazing, this crime series is on Scandinavian level good (sounds weird, but think The Bridge (Scandinavian), Broadchurch (UK) good). I can't believe it's so underrated, and I wished there were more series like these in Korea. I love Kdrama's, but this is the first time I watch a series that actually feels like reality. Acting is on point good, so natural, emotions are all on point, crying when you actually cry. All 16 episodes are so well written, and not until the end you discover the whole truth. Seriously, you won't regret watching it, you just wanna keep watching to discover the truth. And you just fall for the personages/characters, 9.5/10 for me (just because nothing is perfect).

Sakae Dec 11 2018 12:09 pm Remarkable work. Synergy between actors and the writer leading them through twist and turns is near perfection. Lee Yeon-Jae (Yoon-Se Ah) ending sitting in a big chair promises more in the future, while Hwang Shi-Mok is back in the City with his friendship with Han Yeo-Jin has places to go. In a way it remains me ending of another great drama Empire of Gold, and its heroine Choi Seo-Yoon (Lee Yo-Won) at the head of similar conglomerate. Faith of Young Eun-Soo was rather on strong side for me. Honorable mention deserves Yoo-Jae-Myung; I haven't seen all his work, but this one is one of his best I had privilege to watch so far.

The characters are great, actors play is super, and finally we have a female lead who is strong and intelligent through the whole series! When I read the plot description I thought it will be another Doctor Stranger, with a main lead who is a kind of psycho due to brain surgery and a female detective. Yet it is sooo much more and better, the story is amazingly well written with lots of interesting twists and an attention to detail, I watched each episode without skipping any scenes and it kept me interested until the very end.

I rarely ever finish dramas, and this was so worth my time. absolutely fell in love with the main leads. bae doona is amazing, of course, but cho seung-woo is astounding.

I have watch like gazillion of Kdramas for the past 15 years and I can safely said that the writing for this drama is the best that ever comes out from Korea. It is intelligent, excellently written and the clever details is just mind blowing. The writer is great at constructing plot without leaving any minor details. The script is tight, solid, complicated without plot holes and full of characters with great depth and personalities without including any questionable or dumb plot in its storyline. I have high expectation before watching the show but this drama truly exceeded my already high expectations. The writers made everyone, including the main character as the possible suspects and yet, she is still able to surprise us with the ending.

I feel like no other investigation dramas can hold a candle to this other than Signal tbh. Other law or investigation dramas always bother me with the inaccurate technical practices and details but this drama have none of those and it didn't insult you intelligent either. It's simply a brilliant cat & mouse chase drama where both the good and the bad guys are clever. The complexity that the drama delivered is rare and just mind-blowing in quality sense.

For those who like simple plot or one dimension script, stay away from this drama. The complexity and details are hard to follow as everything is like a piece of puzzle that you have to collect one by one and it all come to a perfect puzzle by the time the drama ended. 10/10

Drama is slow with a lot of dialogue but the overall story is well written and although slow, it plays out well. This drama is on corruption with a hint of CSI and thriller thrown in. Less on the action, more on mystery solving. I enjoyed it.

Although I am not familiar with the cast but they prove to be a strong cast. I am looking for their other dramas to watch. ^^

Be patient with the drama. Off with a slow start, it will grow on you as you watch.

However, I feel like the story started out at a slow pace, and near the end it was kind of rushed. Some conversations feels unnecessary and it made me very confused while watching it. On the other side, I understand what may have caused this. This drama's genre is said to be legal, crime and thriller, but it is more focused on the political side and it's a good thing because it shows how realistic it is. This too may have caused it to seem confusing, or even boring, to some, because there's a lot of talking compared to action. If you don't mind all the talking and political matters, then this drama may have been satisfying for you but if you like more actions and thrillers, then other dramas such as Signal, Voice or Tunnel may have suited your preference more than Stranger. Some people may have enjoyed this drama and some didn't, this is simply because people have different preferences. I really enjoyed this drama too so don't go hating on me I'm just stating my opinions like you did, it's just that people's opinions differ.

There are some episodes that many things happen and I really like those eps. It has a nice message overall, but I think it was dragged out way too much with unnecessary conversations bc I didn’t watch some parts and still could get it. I also like the lead actors.

At first, it looks like he's emotionless since he portrays someone who can't feel anything but study his acting as Shi Mok and you'll see what I mean with microexpressions. The first episode had me hooked. This high political drama .. a sort Korean "House of Cards" meets Game of Thrones.

Yes it is a long twisted winding plot but the acting by Cho Seung-Woo and the rest of the cast kept me glued to this quite brilliant series.... oh and Bae Doo-Na is quite wonderful in this!

But then of cos in the end he crumbled down, that just show that he is like any human being, have feelings.

I hope there will be 2nd season for this. I love it soo much. I also addicted to ending OST, so addicting. Keep in mind that this is crime drama if you want to watch this.

I keep watching this because of si mok poker face btw :D but can't beat his smile face at the end though, too precious \(^0^)/

Perhaps because i'm used to tv shows like Criminal Minds with a different crime every episode it feels way too slow when i watch a drama with a single case like this one, the lack of romance/emotion made it even worse, there were so many opportunities between the prosecutor and that cute girl from the prosecution's office but in the end nothing happened. It's not that bad of a drama but i would definitely not watch it again, half of the episodes feel like a waste of time because it doesn't contribute anything to the resolution of the crime, in fact, it only makes it even more confusing.

The series is well acted, looks polished, has a great soundtrack. Early on you think that it has substance, that it's going to spin a web of issues and then tie them up at the end.

But the longer you watch, the more you realize that there is nothing here. This sorry excuse of a "story" is so vapid, usual, unimaginative. There's no surprises, no twists, no depth. If you watch a single episode of Columbo, you would get a similar plot complexity, however it would be resolved in 2 hours instead of 20. With what does Stranger fill the gap? Frankly i don't even remember. Most of the time my attention was taken to another activity because NOTHING HAPPENS.

And then there is nothing else. Flat, unlovable two dimensional characters. No humor, no personal growth, no emotions, good or bad, barely any cute girls. Just your typical rich dudes doing misdeeds and your typical cops extremely slowly solving the case.

A very neatly packaged empty box. Don't waste your time.

I saw cho seung woo for the first time here and he just effortlessly steals the spotlight .Possibly the most nuanced performance I have seen in a Kdrama.Bae Doo Na was good in a sassy role as well.Am not singling out others for praise for not providin spoilers but the support cast was fabulous.

The writing was akin to a slow burn Japanese mystery novel (esp.Keigo Higashino) and the direction was just perfect.The music is apt and provides a strong thrust to the proceedings in the show

I had never thought that a show devoid of romance,comedy track and push for dramatics could be watchable but "Stranger"proved me wrong.A show deserving of all awards it has won and definitely among the Top 3 of 2017

In a lot of detective shows and movies and books, they magically always get the right answer with their first guess. What I loved about this show is how they show you that the great detective of the story (or prosecutor in this case) can come to the wrong conclusion, and he can be wrong more than once. It made the show seem way more realistic and more human than just some dumb old tv show that had no realism to it. I felt like I was really there, apart of it all every step of the way, and I came to love the characters because of this, and my heart broke because of this. There were so many unexpected twists and turns. I felt like I was riding a roller coaster blind sometimes! I must admit Mr. Yoon was my favorite character. Another was Mr. Park's son, because it was so easy to relate to him and his pain. The transformation the characters go through in the show just blew me out of the water because of this series' beautiful writing. Overall, I'd say this show is phenomenal and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good drama (especially if crime and mystery elements are your thing). Well done, writers!

It never got boring as something was always happening and wasn't a slow start either. If there are, it might not be that noticeable. This is the first time I knew about Cho Seung Woo. I was a bit hesitant because I do not know him at all. I was afraid I'll be wasting 16 - 18 hours of my life for this drama. But NO... He was fantastic! I was amazed by how he kept his character with NO EMOTIONS interesting until the end. His acting was just DAEBAK!. He is a very talented actor and he is now one of my faves. I've watched almost all of his works and he brings a different character in each project he does. I was also surprised that he is more into musical acting. So I searched for videos of him singing. First tone he sang, I am dead. I am hooked. He is such a good singer as well. I hope he does more dramas. Hopefully, a drama that would make him smile more often. I love his eyes when he smiles. :)

Gripping and well-paced till the very end and heart wrenching at times too. The subtle humour also worked well, and there was no overdone slapstick comedy like in some Korean dramas. Bae Doo Na brought me here, I adored her in Sense8 as Sun, it's one of my absolute favourite shows. Her acting here is stellar, so are all the main characters'. All in all, a well rounded drama, of which all aspects are executed well. 8.5/10. I would definitely recommend this drama to anyone who loves crime/thriller dramas.

The plot is brilliant, the acting is superb, even the subtle romance (or let's say the characters' developing relationship bw e/o) is no joke, it is cute but at the same time heart-breaking (Yes I talk about Eun Soo and Shi Mok). Anw, top three kdrama (all the time) list will be; Secret Forest, Signal, and Tunnel. Many people recommend me Voice though, but I only watch it till ep 4, bcs it is too scary:(

This was worth all the hours I spent binge watching. Every episode leaves you wanting more. None of that overused, repetitive stuff in each episode. I was certainly never bored, rather anxious ans excited. Everything was perfect, from cast to unraveling of the story. Cho Seungwoo gave Prosecutor Hwang so much character. I looked at this on Netflix, hour after hour, for hours.... and in two days I'd looked at all 16 episodes. It was like a well executed game of intricate chess where you are kept guessing until the last. Kudos to Doona, Mr. Seung Woo, and the entire cast... you were very easy to love and fall in love with... I'm looking forward to Season 2 and hope there is one and the show does not end at Season 1. I'd like to see how Shi Mok Huang's character develops as he learns to show emotions and the comraderie between the team as they tackle the next investigation. ;)

tim65 Aug 15 2017 10:13 pm i've been watching a lot of kdrama recently, and i've to admit that they had a lot of good shows, this one is on my best drama list. the story line is so solid and the acting is good too, this drama is flawless, i've no complain. it will be hard to move on to another drama since this one is too good. hope to see more drama or movie from this writer (lee soo yeon). didn't anticipated this ending at all, but it ended in a good way, both sad and happy. i don't think there will be season 2 though.

Battlefield 4 - Edilova (PC) Aug 02 2017 3:41 pm It doesn't have any romance, this drama is really good, each episode you're anxious, doesn't repeat anything like all other drama's. Great storyline, casts, action. My verdict is 10/10 a must watch!

I don't think Hwang Shi-Mok would have been good at being a Chief Prosecutor. His talent is figuring out crimes and working with a small team. Loved this show because it showed that the Prosecution office and law enforcement have to work together to get the job done. I agree with ikram, not the typical Korean chaebol rich bad boy who loves the poor spunky girl. Going to miss this one.

He was outstanding with his skilful expressions of a deeply sadden and completely heartbroken father's love for his child. That was a HIGH POINT for this drama. So glad the director created this scene and gave him the unhurried screen time. And he did it so remarkably well.

He's been taking on minor roles that perhaps many, myself included, have not even noticed/recognised him e.g. (a) security guard in 'Sendal-the man who sells the river' (b) eunuch in 'The Face Reader' (c) another character's husband in 'Goblin'... just to name a few.

He's 34, still young, and has proven his professionalism by taking all his roles seriously, no matter how minor. In this drama, his name (no picture) appeared in the long list of "additional cast members". By now, with rave reviews on his excellent acting skills, producers & casting directors would have taken notice of this rare gem. Hope this drama brings lead-role offers to him. Even though there are a hint that the female detective likes the prosecutor the show doesn't fall in this trap and show how a man who has no emotions due to a surgery would not fall in love. She likes him even though she can't understand him even when she discovers why he's like that. Awesome series.

Never seen anything so thoroughly planned out and seamlessly executed. Actors are all perfect for the role and totally absorbed in it. There is absolutely no exaggeration in the plot development and character reaction. Everything goes so smoothly as if we are watching them in real life. This is a true breakthrough of K-drama industry and I am eagerly anticipating to see more dramas from the author as she has already finished 4 more scripts. No words can describe true value of this master piece.

I thought that she would get seriously hurt or he would attempt to kill her and not succeed. lm Jul 24 2017 9:15 am the casting team who casted Cho Seung-Woo deserve a credit. i would say this movie is perfect. his act is just exquisite. not too much, it is just right and spot on. sadly it is not a lovey dovey romance drama, that is why this series doesnt get alot of attention. but i have to stay this is one of the best Korean series i have ever seen. the story is superb, the mystery is intriguing, the acting is very excellent. this series should at least win one award. :)

Great lead actor and actress, great story plot, great how natural the characters act, it's like people you meet and see everyday, not too fancy wardrobes, it's just natural.

Si Mok, gee, how should I describe him. He is emotionless, but sometimes his heart seems conflicted too. I love how he is able to outsmart his colleagues and superiors. It's also such a relief to watch drama that can still teach us people should stand on doing and believing the right thing, instead of chasing money and power. I just love this drama. Love!

I love how the duo Cho Seung-Woo and Bae Doo-Na has expanded to an entire investigation team, adding depth to all the secondary characters in the script. Among those, I am starting to really get attached to the character played by Shin Hye-Sun (the minister's daughter). In one scene, she looks like Lady Vengeance, and in the next one, like a homeless puppy running at the feet of the prosecutor. Will there be a love triangle between her and the main duo? We'll see.

The camera work is flawless. The script is worthy of a great crime novelist such as Agatha Christie. And above all, the acting quality is simply unprecedented. I already knew how talented an actress Bae Doo-Na is, but I am seeing actor Cho Seung-Woo for the first time, and I am stunned. The duo formed by these two manages to show intelligence and depth of character without any effort or pretense.

It's not really true! Although the main lead from SF lack of an emotion too, but the reason about that is kinda different from the main lead from BM. The main lead in SF ald has a tinnitus (correct me if i'm wrong with the name of the disease) so he had a surgery for that, but for main lead from BM is kinda different, he lack of an emotion because he got an accident, & his ''father'' try to operate him then failed.

And the plot is sooooo very different, in SF, the main lead tried to solve the case, ( and actually it's a very heavy plot with so many suprises). Really,, If you guys like to watch a crime drama with a heavy plot, I recommend this drama! The story, actors, are very good! Try it guys! :)

I love bae doo na, who has interest in her, please try watch her movie, Cloud Atlas. one of mind blowing movie.

Oh and this drama, it is quite similar to Beautiful Mind, and I have always love the drama though not many like it. I really gonna give a try watching Secret Forest

LKB Jan 28 2017 8:07 pm I'm already excited since there's a magic triangle of greatness here already: Bae Doo Na, Jo Seung Woo, and tvN! I've never seen any of what (little) the writer has put out into the world BUT tvN do tend to pick up more original/unique scripts and make them into masterpieces at a much higher rate from my POV than other networks--the freedom of being a cable station, I suppose, and not glued to ratings to get this or that sponsorship and so on.
