Set during a Joseon period where people went through severe hardship due to the Qing invasion (Jan. 3, 1637 to Feb. 24, 1637). A love story blooms during that time.

Lee Jang-Hyun (Namkoong Min) is a mysterious man who suddenly appears in society circles. He appears to be a cheerful person, but in fact he is not. He is a complex person with a deep and dark secret that he can't reveal to anyone. A woman named Yoo Gil-Chae (Ahn Eun-Jin) appears in front of him and his life changes. Yoo Gil-Chae is the daughter of noble a family. She is a lovely woman, brimming with confidence. While experiencing the upheaval caused by the Qing invasion and falling in love with Lee Jang-Hyun, she grows as a person.

Hermona Nov 23 2023 11:03 am This story is the most beautiful I have seen in forever. The main character is sooooo sexy an his demeanor is intoxicating. The storyline kept me from sleeping. I was so hung up on getting thru the episodes. They pull u in an the interaction between the 2 main characters make u forget to breathe. They are so beautiful together. This is one drama I never wanted to end. A man like that who loves deeply an only has eyes for u is hard to find...but he makes u want a man like him an keeps u from giving up on real love.

Bella Nov 22 2023 10:07 pm I've never been so grateful for an happy ending in a movie before. The two of them deserve to find peace in each other's arms after all they've been through. This is new best kdrama so far. It's so different from every other one I've watched. This is beautiful. Almost everyone expected a sad ending but I think the writer rewarded us for watching. The only sad part is the death of the crown prince and his princess, they just died a meaningless death and there's no one to avenge them. All the same, this is a good drama.

May Nov 22 2023 9:56 pm I just started watching and on episode 1 so funny that there is a scene where an actress was making embroidery but suddenly the thread fall off from her house. So funny and impossible to watch that the thread keeps rolling reaching the forest and river but still keeps on rolling. As in what the heck? I do not sure if Im gonna continue watching.

Despite being a war type kdrama, still the romantic scenes dominate everything. Namkoomin rules , ? . I laughed but cried buckets in many scenes . I have reached episode 10 and im just praying to be a happy ending. Highly recommended. Watch it ?

Hana Nov 06 2023 8:23 am I really loved this drama to the point that I can’t stop myself from watching it and makes me forget to do other things hahaha but it only pains me and still gets me curious about the beginning and ending of the series. In the first episode, it seems like the first 20 mins (I think) is a foreshadow where Lee Jang Hyun, who was full of blood on his clothes, was being chased by groups of men carrying their own weapons. Huwaaa I can’t.?

Mike Oct 26 2023 11:00 am I loved this series, part 1! I enjoyed the story, enjoyed the FL and ML characters, was drawn to the strength of GilChae, made her very attractive. Many tense, action scenes, many tear jerker scenes. I'm ok with the ending because, well, it was not the ending since there is Part 2. If you want the worst ending ever, watch Youth of May where the FL is killed and we see her skeleton! Still not over that one.

Marion Meginnis Oct 24 2023 9:36 pm Oh, my word! Just finished episode 14. This is one of the great ones! Wonderful cast, wonderful story, wonderful art direction. Really an epic. Main leads, who I've really never noticed in any drama before, are incredibly well matched. There was a lot of jawing at the beginning about the age difference but that did not matter to me because Yoo Gil-Chae was definitely the boss of her own world and Lee Jang-Hyun the same in his. I don't know which character or actor I like more. I am almost afraid to watch each week dreading the challenges they face. Doesn't appear that the show is doing really well in the ratings, which is insane. Watching on Viki, but living in the US. My advice: get this baby on an international platform and Watch It Soar! One for the ages!

Onelife Sep 23 2023 11:49 am So far, the show is good. Namkoong Min's acting is excellent, but Ahn Eun-Jin needs to improve. Her acting is unconvincing and unattractive. The story is good but lacks depth. I hope that part 2 will be better.

And, at the very beginning he was on the beach about to face an armed mob. She, had turned grey, presumably some time had passed and she is in a mental prison—we don't her crime if any. The investigator wanted answers about him. I expected the story would at the end make sense of it, it didn't. In fact the scenes at the beginning didn't belong anywhere in the story. It is a mess.

I feel bad jang hyun and gil chae love each other yet they cant be together with so many odds around them.Each one shows their feelings in a way another one doesn't understand or know gow to reciprocate. Bht Jang hyun love is the one with sincerity .Just hope the ebd won't disappoint me

The director is excellent too, the twist of events is unique. Among all the kdrama i hace watched si far for this year till now i would say this is the best.Am looking foward to part 2 , I was really dissapointed knowing there is no part 2 yet.

Jillibean Sep 12 2023 5:01 am Actor Nam Goong Min stated on social media that his character's relationship with Gil Chae will blossom again and win over the fans' hearts. The bounty hunter-killer will never be his "My Dearest". :) There's nothing wrong with Gil Chae. She showed moral courage to put her family first, including her mentally fragile Dad. Jang Hyun needs to grow up, face his personal demons from his past, and take full responsibility for his "My Dearest" and her family ... otherwise he will be the real loser in love.

Ari Sep 11 2023 7:28 pm What is seriously wrong with this Gil Chae? Actually Jung Hyun did everything he can to prove his love and doesn't need to live with regrets. I am pretty sure that if she happened to meet Jung Hyun with that female bandit, she is going to have a panic attack. She will get so jealous and start behaving as if the guy was the one betraying her. However, i really loved the chemistry between them and hoping that they might end up together. Maybe the second season will be made in a way that Gil Chae will be the one starting to pursue Jung Hyun in fear to lose him for good and catching up for her mistakes. I may add that this story makes us realize that when it comes to certain situations, we need to be selfish for us to be happy. It is true that the guy still has an uncertain future ahead but since they love each other they should share their worries and see how it goes. At least nobody will condemn the other for not trying.

He deposited her in a dirty shack and expected her to put out. No high quality man does that to a woman he supposedly loves. A real man will say directly to the woman he loves, "I love you. I want to marry you. I will take care of you and yours the rest of your life." He would take them all somewhere safe where they could live their lives out in peace. He also said, "I hate you" at one point. He was giving her mixed messages. You could see how confused she looked many times when he was talking to her. Hopefully in Act 2 he grows up and matures and does the right thing by his "Dearest".

I realized that the main characters and some of the intrigue have been inspired by the american « Gone with the wind » written by Margaret Mitchell, one of my favourite books. Jillibean Sep 10 2023 6:28 pm Rider, the real houses in Georgia, even back in 1939, looked the worst for wear over the decades since the 1860's. The studio homes for GWTW were pristine and stunning, like they would have been when the real houses were used by people back then. So that was a feast for the audience's eyes when they flocked to see the movie in 1939. In 1969 when I was a young girl my Grandad took me to see GWTW in an ornate old theater on the big screen. Magnificent! TV screens today can't capture that stunning beauty no matter how many HDs are utilized on the streaming sites.

Jillibean Sep 10 2023 6:19 pm Firstblood, there is a month break between episodes 10 and 11. No one is thrilled about it. Business decisions are rarely artistic decisions. Now as I write this it will be three weeks. Hopefully they will go by fast and we will see Gil Chae and Jang Hyun's romance start up again. I think Lee Chung Ah will be more like a cameo appearance in part two. Her character will never be his My Dearest. We can count on that. :) She plays a bounty hunter, she kills or captures people for money. Such an evil character will never be loved by him.

She's not even part of the cast listed. This makes me wonder how they will write her into this already developed storyline. I haven't watched this drama yet because it didn't peak my interest. Knowing that she's in here in S2, I can't wait!

However, if you want to go to Georgia and actually see some of those locations - not possible - all of GWTW was shot in California, mostly at Selznick International Studios. One of the distinguishing hallmarks of Korean TV dramas that sets it apart is using actual on site - timeless - locations for story development. "Winter Sonata" - and Hallstatt, Austria. "Goblin" - and Quebec, Canada - the red door is still there - "Crash Landing on You" - Interlaken, Switzerland.

Viewers are comparing My Dearest to GWTW. It is to a point - eventually depending on liberties the the director/producer can take with Joseon history and culture - but they have the opportunity to distinguish it as their own - by filming more scenes at recognizable timeless Korean vistas - production cost allowing.

Jillibean Sep 07 2023 8:47 am Rider, Gone With The Wind would never have become the timeless classic it did if it had "blah studio sets". It was no black and white programmer. They spent a fortune on its production. Every scene was gorgeously framed, whether it concentrated on people or nature. They even used tracking shots, which were a novelty back in the 1930's. That scene where the camera went airborne and showed all the injured soldiers screaming on the ground for medical help was breathtaking. When Scarlett cried out in that field at sunset, "As God is my witness ..." and the camera pulled away, well, I bet there were few dry eyes in the theater. Even the party scene at Twelve Oaks was stunning. 100 years from now people will still be watching Gone With The Wind but My Dearest will essentially be forgotten. True classics stand the test of time.

Rider Sep 06 2023 8:34 pm It starts out like GWTW paralleling the customs and traditions of the old South during the Civil War, but I am really interest in how it will evolve according to old Korean customs and traditions. There are some things in GWTW that could never happen in the Josean period - so I think the story will have a different arc. There's nothing wrong with a remake. Train to Busan is a remake of all the zombie movies - but it is a classic. The 7 Samurai was remade into the Magnificent 7. The Hidden Fortress became Star Wars. The ML and FL are great actors - they need to showcase their skills with vast on-location background vistas to set it apart from GWTW - which I felt used a lot of blah studio sets.

He owned a lumber yard and Scarlett took it over and ran it after the war was over and succeeded at it as a business. Her second husband actually died defending her honor. So the writer of My Dearest is definitely veering away from plot points from GWTW. She is putting her own spin on the basic tale. I don't think this female lead character in My Dearest will actually physically marry that soldier-merchant fellow, especially after he said he would kill her if she was untrue to him; that too is totally unlike GWTW. Korean drama writers usually want their female leads pining for just one man. It keeps the audience hooked. In GWTW the Scarlett character didn't even realize she loved Rhett until the very end of the film! That also is different from My Dearest.

But at the end, what were all her dreams about? What was that scene on the cliff desperately screaming his name about, when she eventually rejected him anywayz? And how can she, after all that, give herself to another man while he is alive? It's just too weird for me... And what about that guy who she's married to? How the hell can he accept her as his wife while he knows that the "love of her life" is still alive and she'd rather be with him? These are unacceptable things for me... I cannot respect her nor that man... Only Jang-Hyun has saved a little face by finally moving on with his life and not become completely obsessed with the woman that didn't deserve such love. And finally, maybe it's a cultural difference, but why was it so impossible for them to announce that the love of her life everyone said to be dead was alive, cancel the marriage and marry each other? Another thing I absolutely cannot respect... As if they push themselves to live a miserable life while they really don't have to.

And to be honest, all Jang Hyun did was giving her half-hearted promises/confession and pushing her to make all the decisions like he's threating her?? We agree on one thing tho. I was so glad that she didn't choose him at the end. The second season will probably have a different FL so, good for both of them.

Excellent drama and cast of the year.. you can notice that Jang Hyun smile was soo similar with Rhett Butler smile. The production did a great job casted the right FL and ML...Nam Goong Min was such a great actor.. Green flag guy and indeed he's charming and dynamic actor.. The ending in ep 10 was just an intermission.. Too sad that I have to wait a month to watch the 2nd part..Oct please come fast.

I totally feel the pain of Janghyun and was wishing for them to be together at the end, he suffered a lot and waited for her a lot to open her heart for him and I'm super angry about the reaction of Gilchae: Why are you angry ??? You are the one to blame in all this. You made yourself clear with your feelings to late, it's too selfish, he was protecting you the whole time, even a stone would feel his love!!! And then you thought he is dead and that's when you realized how much you love him! (That's the same for everyone one in real life, we understand how much we care for someone only when they leave).. but then when he came back!!!! You Should Be Happy To See Him and crazy happy to know he is alive!! But she was blaming him for being late. Dis she even ask him what happened for him???? ... She should have talked with her fiancee, told him sorry I can't marry you, my love is back and that would make everyone in ease!! .Anyway I really didn't like this. And now comes the part of janghyun that I want to kill him for that! Why did you ask her to run away with you?????????? Why? You are always leaving we know!?!? But why did you not stay there, fight for her, face her fiancee and tell him you took my love now she is mine!!!!!! Did you ask her what she went through??? How did she manage to earn money and take care of her family??? Do you even care about her family??? Dammm I'm so angry about him. He loves her to the moon and back, we all know. Seun Sep 03 2023 11:24 am People blaming Gilchae, she's annoying but I can understand her, she has a crush on someone for a long time until another man came into picture, it isn't easy for her to let go of that person in her heart, even realistically if u really love someone, but like they say, u won't know how important/precious something is until u lose that thing, her feelings is growing for Jang hyun but bcos of his reputation/unplayfulness she pretended not to see her feelings but when she thought he's dead, she finally realized I love him, her being engaged to someone else isn't her fault, as a lady, she is trying to protect her reputation, she's been gossip about much, she believed Jang hyun was dead, even ryang eum didn't tell her d truth, maybe if he had told her then when she asked, she might have called off their engagement bcos d wedding gifts didn't arrive then but her running away with Jang hyun is completely ridiculous, she can't leave her family behind to bear the cause of her actions, her younger sister might not be able to get married either, Jang hyun as a person is to be blame as well, he wasn't completely honest with her, when she asked who saved them bf, he said he's not d one, him telling her to run away with him isn't d solution but to stay and resolve it together, gilchae as a lady will be d one to be gossip about mostly, no matter how u love a man running away with d person is out of a question, he didn't even guarantee of marriage when she asked. Though, I really bliv her marriage didn't go through, let's wait and see in season 2

Swoosh Sep 03 2023 10:17 am So my prediction will be: - Ryang Eum hates gil chae and he will try either to kill her or harm her family, or betray jang hyun even more. - The masked woman in ep 10 (I guess Lee Cung Ah) will fall in love with jang hun. - Jang hyun is not completely get gil chae over from his heart even though he might flirt with the masked woman. - Jang hyun and gil chae will not ended up together (I do still hope they will be happy together though). Maybe they will in the next life.

I am looking forward to part 2. I have seen that plot in real life. I have a hate like feeling about Gilchae. I think it was necessary to strengthen certain elements in the drama or to strengthen the characters backstory. The ending wasn't tragic for me it was necessary. I could not explain it for the others but I definitely understand the writer.

The two leads have such a great chemistry and I love how it’s fast paced and not dragging. Nam Goong Min, you are such an incredible actor. I literally felt butterflies watching your performance in this drama. For Ahn Eun Jin, your portrayal of Yoo Gil Chae is astonishing. I can clearly see Gil Chae’s growth throughout the drama. As for all the other casts, you guys are perfect! The plot is also very i teresting to watch. I keep finding myself waiting and anticipating each new episode and I can’t wait for the part 2 as well! Hope we have a happy ending for the two leads!

I stopped watching all other ongoing series because of this one. All others are meaningless and boring after I watched this. I new it will be amazing.

At first, I thought he is not handsome but when I started seeing him in the drama, oh my god, his charisma is just explosive. Love love love. The FL is also amazing. The age gap is perfect for their role since it suits their roles perfectly. Best drama ever seen in the past 10 years. Love it so much.

I never really expected them to get cast together. Nam Koong-min is one of my favorite actors, and now I think Ahn Eun-jin is showing great acting skills too. A true level up to her previous performances. I can see some don’t like their pairing, but for me I find it thrilling and even sexy. ?

And I didn't have to wait long to watch the second season. I like the story and it's not boring at all. The plot is fairly fast and the chemistry of the actor and the actres really feels in my heart. I feel like I'm getting into the story. I like royal stories that don't just focus on the struggle for the throne and the intrigues of the royal family. This drama presents a different story about an invasion from another region. Although this story is fictional, it still presents historical facts. This drama talks about the Mongols, etc. so I can learn history too. In the first few episodes, you might think that the female lead character is really annoying. But when you watch episodes 3 and 4, you can feel that her character is a strong and kind woman. It looks like she cares about other people despite his "pick me" character. She just wants to be loved by the person she loves, that's why she pretends to be elegant to be with other men to attract the attention of the man she loves. So far I like the character development of the female lead.

I shall keep watching since the description states that the main female character grows as a person. That's what I like most about Korean dramas: their character growth is usually excellent.

Veronica Aug 07 2023 12:38 pm NKM never disappoints! Even though the first episode is a tab slow but it is to set up the story and characters. The pace of the second episode is already much faster! I think there are so much chemistry between the leads and all the scenery are beautiful. The story too is getting more and more interesting. I know it will be another masterpiece! So looking forward to the remaining episodes.

ppu Aug 06 2023 7:44 am I must say such high quality script and acting from all the actors were not what I expected but damn! Ml and fl have great chemistry, and I loveee Fl's personality!! She has childish and egoistical side that matched her life background. Ahn eun jin and nam goong ming's acting were soo detailed!! Music and soundtrack choices are beautiful as well. Though I cant handle anymore mr sunshine endings but I think I can handle 3-4 more episodes.
