Mara Feb 07 2023 7:28 am I previously finished Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories that had two seasons, so I don't know if it's a special series apart from this season. Anyway, I checked and noticed that this was from 2009. This season was different from the first one I mentioned since the stories were more heartwarming. There was some content that are truly for mature audiences, but for the most part it tugged at my heartstrings that at times I shed a tear after each episode. All kinds of love were portrayed, from filial to romantic love, even love between friends. Realistic characters who are regular patrons of the diner, sharing their stories and life drama, and the Master at the middle of it all, observing and at times partaking in the situation that is going on in his wonderful restaurant. Makes me wish I had such a diner in my neighborhood. I'm so happy I found this series.

Tune Nix May 25 2022 9:10 am I love this show. I'm watching it for the second time. The opening song is like a comforting lullaby to me. I think it has some kind of subliminal thing to it that makes me want to sleep.

I thought it must have been filmed at an actual location but I saw in one website that the entire thing was a film set. You've got to hand it to the set designers, they've got it down to pat even with miniscule details like the flashlight on the wall or the garden hose outside the door or the wear and tear of the steps leading to the diner.

S1 E7 gets me every time. It's so sad and frustrating that he didn't get to tell her how he felt.

The stories are very simple but powerful.

Zombie Sep 06 2020 10:28 am I always wonder who is the lady that seems to have a spark with master at the end of season 5. There’s also that episode with the ex-yakuza wife friend episode where master got in trouble with that lady. Curious who they were.

Palara Feb 12 2020 8:33 pm The show was based on a pretty cool Manga - Netflix season 1 is actually season 4 of the show in japan - (It was not a NETFLIX ORIGINAL) - you can still find actual S01 to S03 floating around somewhere - although S01 did have some nudity in it (maybe that's why NF started with S04).

I'd give the show 4 out of 5 stars - its fun and appeals to our better nature - with just 1 or 2 episodes that, for me, missed the mark - (Boring, pacing issues, etc.)

If you like the show - check out the movie as well - 4 out of 5 on that for me too.

Azukay Dec 01 2011 12:06 pm An amazing drama with a sense of nostalgia and melancholy to it. Each episode is like a small diamond with its own catharsis at the end. All actors are great and Kobayashi -san is amazing at the role of Master.
