Plot

Born to a gisaeng (a female entertainer) and a father of noble background, Hwang Jiny was left at a temple by her mother, who did not want her to become a gisaeng. Although she led a sheltered life within the temple walls, one day she happened to see some gisaengs in the marketplace. Wanting to learn how to dance, she goes to a gisaeng’s house, where she meets her mother for the first time. Jiny shows outstanding talent for playing the geomungo (a traditional Korean instrument) and for dancing. Meanwhile, she falls in love with Eunho, who is from a powerful noble family. They cannot overcome the fact they are from different social backgrounds, and Eunho dies of a broken heart. Unable to forget her first love Eunho, Jiny lives a miserable life succumbing to alcohol. She drinks day and night and has no desire to dance anymore. While in a state of drunkenness, she decides to kill herself but is saved by Jeonghan. Afterwards, he becomes her new love.

elle Nov 15 2022 3:18 am this was such a beautiful drama, first time watching it this year and it amazes me by how deep and meaningful this drama is, despite it being produced in 2006. the amount of emotions it stirred up within me is insane. It was such a poignant portrayal of gisaeng life and art. it was a pity that jae won did not end up together with her at the end, i was really rooting for them. anyway imo this is one of the best sageuk i’ve watched!

Alexija Jun 13 2018 5:32 pm This drama is really not for everyone. Sure, everyone can watch it but only a few will understand about what the whole story is. I dont know who wrote that drama, i dont neither their name. But they really know about being an artist, no matter which kind. Ha Ji Won has really deserved to get this role because sche mastered it very well. I love a lot of korean historical dramas but this one has really much worth in it, that can only be seen from people who understand art. Well done!

Scott Tenney Apr 11 2016 5:39 pm I was enthralled by this drama. I had seen Secret Garden and King2Hearts and am a big fan of Ha Ji Won. This has wonderful costumes, beautiful music and great acting. I loved the little Hwang Jin Yi as a buddhist "postulant". I highly recommend this drama! I thought it was moving!

Hannah Jan 11 2015 6:35 am This is such an amazing drama! Once you get to the end that is. In the beginning I paused in between a bunch of episodes but there are so many great aspects of this drama. The transformation of Hwang Jin Yi just elates and crushes your heart! Her pain and happiness, you can feel it too! There are many great shots of colorful hanboks, the dances, hair styles, etc. And the most greatest thing I find is that there is no truly a "bad guy". All the character (main) who do despicable acts towards the protagonists have their share of pain and that correlates to themselves so beautifully!

zoe Mar 09 2013 6:38 pm I think i watched this drama in 2008/09 but i still remember it so well because it was such a beautiful drama ! i can just think about it now and still bring up tears for the tragic bits or smile at the memory of the sweet scenes ^^ I've watched so many k-dramas over the years but Hwang Jin Yi has to be my favorite and Ha Ji Won is just amazing :D

I found the writing, cinematography, and of course the acting to be memorable. I still remember this drama after many months of having seen it.
