Plot

Naoko meets Yusuke while staying on an island for medical treatment. Yusuke's graceful athletic figure captivates her eyes and she falls in love with him. But their relationship is soon broken after Yusuke's father dies while trying to save Naoko from drowning. The memory of Yusuke leads Naoko to the track, and six years later, they meet each other again at a Marathon competition. Naoko decides to become a manager to help Yusuke, a gifted runner, and they embark on training together to heal their sorrows from the past.

"Naoko" turned out to be my second favorite "sports" film after "Ping Pong". The film pleasantly turned out deeper substance than expected. Juri Ueno was her usual spectacular self, Haruma Miura pretty good in a bit of a one dimensional role, and Tsurube turning in the most dynamic performance. The film itself sends a carefully crafted message, that life can work in a way similar to a marathon with everyone passing the baton on to another for a reason. The occasional widescreen backdrops of the local area was also breath taking. Excellant film!
