Shinzo Egi (Koji Yakusho) is an asthma sufferer who does not want to be place on life support. As a last request, Shinzo Egi asks his doctor Ayano Orii (Tamiyo Kusakari) if she could follow his wish. Doctor Ayano Orii is then questioned in a criminal case because of her decision.

Notes

Movie is based on the short story “Tsui no Shintaku” (literally "The Final Request") by attorney/author Saku Tatsuki.
Filming runs from October through mid-December, 2011. Shooting location occurs in Kitakyushu & movie studio.
Director Masayuki Suo, actress Tamiyo Kusakari & actor Koji Yakusho previously worked together in the 1996 film "Shall We Dance?".

Mike Warr Nov 23 2013 12:21 am Hi, I never understood why this film did not get the attention that it deserved. It screened in Sydney at the JFF here. It was gripping and one of the most confronting pieces of drama I have seen. Building the pressure of the adversarial process of investigating a potential murder, the film recants the events that led to the death of the patient.

This film bravely looks at life, love. treatment of the dying and terminally ill. There is no black and white view of the world. The film asks the question, where is the boundary of easing the suffering as opposed to pushing someone into the next life.

I think these are issues that concern, doctors, lawyers and politicians or anyone with a sick parent or friend, anywhere on the planet.

If you like movies that make you think, then this is movie for you.
