A young girl named Hye-Na (Heo Yool) is abused by her mother Ja-Young (Ko Sung-Hee). Although she is not okay, she tells other people she is alright. Soo-Jin (Lee Bo-Young) is a temporary teacher at the elementary school where Hye-Na attends. Soo-Jin is aware of her situation and decides to become her mother.

Heo Yool was selected to play Hye-Na after taking part in auditions involving about 400 other participants.

Loco Nov 09 2021 9:29 am I can’t express how much I Love this drama. This is a masterpiece that everyone should see it at least once. This is a one of a few Kdrama that has an infinite replayability. The acting are superb. Lee Boyoung drove me crazy! What an amazing actress! The kid actor who played Yoon Bok, she’s incredible despite her age. Not to mention, Son Suk-Ku is a perfect villain. I love him from Designated Survivor. He really suits a bad guy character! All the actors nailed it perfectly. Their performances are brilliant. // I also really love the background music, it’s so tense and beautiful.

My most favourite scene is definitely in ep 2 when Soojin decided to risk everything to save Yoon Bok and leaves for good. They both walks downhill while holds each others hand and leaves the town in a snowy day. The scene, background music and cinematography are perfect! It so iconic<3

Truly, one of the best kdramas I've ever seen. All three leading ladies: Lee Bo-Young, Heo Yool & Lee Hye-Young were simply out of this world.

Lee Boyoung's acting was so real, esp when she separate with hyena I can't help but cried so hard. I love how they all solve the problem between a child and the mother. I agree with Ms. Cha when she said that a mother will become a real mother when she is ready to sacrifice anything for her child. Kinda sad how Seol Ak become a bad person bcs of his childhood, but it will become a circle that will continue to happen if they not cut the circle

Glad that soojin cut that circle for hyena and i also glad that her biological mom leave her on orphanage. It is all evidence that not everyone able to be a mother. One of the hole in this drama is why yijin and hyunjin doesn't know they are not Ms. Cha biological child when Ms. Cha doesn't have a husband at that time? She is also an actress how does the public not aware how she have 2 other child beside soojin without a husband? Or I missed something?

Some people may find it too slow, but the slowness gives time for me to look for the details and value of this drama.

What a stunning drama it is. The director, writer, actors. Just big thanks to everyone! Definitely tops Japanese version (it was still very good tho). Despite all the sadness in drama, it gives you so much hope and love that none drama ever gave, because this one is very realistic. Couldn't help myself choking from crying so much through various episodes, especially on last few ones. Showing the biggest respect to all the cast. Thank you so much for this! Love you all)

Like a mom to little helpless child. One of the strongest, most complex, captivating, intense, sad, atmospheric, depressive yet full of love dramas out there. Actors are stunning and superb. Characters are strong, amazing and realistic. Soundtrack is beyond words. This is example of art in its finest.

Alexey May 24 2020 10:31 pm Decided to listen to soundtrack, and shed a glass of tears. I dont remember a more powerful drama, even though I watched Goblin and CLOY, which both are very powerful. They can't top the sadness and the level of relationship that was shown there. Some people may find it boring, but this drama is so atmospheric and emotional, you just want to live in it if you dig into it. After watching, I think I had a huge hole in my chest. After that I felt so sad and sorry for almost 4 days, just simply living them by, because this was SO impactful. No kdrama did this to me. I didnt want to experience this hurtful sadness, but it was so addicted that when I lost that feeling I just wanted it all again, and when I got it, I regretted, until it was gone. And again. . I just want everyone to watch this.

Those who weep while watching this heartbreaking drama will know the abovementioned quotes, simply amazing! I was crying non stop E14 to E16

I had such a hole in my heart from this drama and everything that main characters have gone through just made me loose my tears over and over in episodes. Even story of the villain was very sad and heartbreaking. And the Heo Yool's character... the actress did an absolutely fantastic job in her child years. The concept of the series about Mothers and their different stories is just amazing. The drama may be pretty depressive, but its definitely worth watching from beginning to end. So just do it, you wont regret. This is 11/10 from me.

NickSJ Mar 26 2020 6:23 pm I don't understand why this drama doesn't have a higher rating above. I've watched over 200 k-dramas, and this one is in my top 5. It's a beautiful story about what mothers really are, and about the conflict between doing what's legal and what's right to save a child. Lee Bo Young is one of Korea's best actresses, and she does a great job here as a reclusive scientist who finds that a little girl is being horribly abused, and can't walk away when the authorities have failed to protect her. There is no romance in this drama - it's all about mother's love, and it's wonderfully done.

Levy Aug 24 2019 7:51 pm The jdrama was one of the must watch jdrama, however it was already slow with its 11 episodes, watching this in 16 episodes must be painful, in less they added a lot of unneccessary stuff, I have been told it is avoidable if you have seen the Japanese Version. Secondly I hear that they managed to contrive a happyish ending? What why do Koreans needs to have an Audience pampering ending even if it is unrealistic, lady you broke the law, played cat and mouse with the Police for months, there is no way you get to legally adopt the baby, it is reality, even if you have all my sympathy. This is one thing I like about Jdrama no matter how noble your intentions are if you break the law you pay repercussions.

Lee - 9/10 Sep 19 2018 11:25 pm This drama is beautiful and absolutely heartbreaking!! A beautiful story about the intense relationship between a mother and a child and the consequences of abuse! Phenomenal acting!!!! I highly recommended it!!! I give it a 9/10! The only reason it’s not a 10/10 (spoiler alert) is because of the ending. While not bad, I personally would have liked to see Soo-Jin fight harder for Yoon-Bok after they got caught by the police. She had all the means to fight during her trial. She had pictures and recordings to prove the abuse. The teacher could have testified on her behalf (proving the police, school administration and child protective services did nothing to help). Hye-Na testified on her bio mother’s trial that her life was in danger when her mother threw her out in a garbage bag in the cold. Her famous mother and journalist sister could have created public support and all the good people they met during their escape could have testified how much she cared for Yoon-Bok. Instead she basically gave up until the last minute. In my honest opinion, she completely abandoned Yoon-Bok for TWO YEARS!!! That’s a VERY long time! She did to Yoon-Bok exactly what her mother did to her! Yes, eventually she adopted her but not before Hye-Na practically gave up on ever seeing her again. Soo-Jin’s issues were caused by her mother’s abandonment so why not be the mama lion she was during their escape and fight for a not guilty verdict that will allow her to adopt Yoon-Bok immediately?! It’s possible the writers wanted it to be more realistic or maybe they wanted to make the point that waiting for the system to work is the right thing to do but in my eyes it contradicts everything that happened between Soo-Jin and Yoon-Bok before.

And then, Not to much dialog, the story flowing slow, but full of feel. Even when they just glaring each other can make me sad. The lesson from this drama, society need too care about married or pregnant in young age, when the mother mentality is the concern. Beside that, mostly pregnant without marriage, affect badly the woman and their children mostly.

There are no couple romantic scenes showing but the chemistry between kang soo jin and kim hye na is amazing. Most of the supporting casts are also good at expressing their characters. If I can rate this drama, I'll score 9.5 out of 10.

Jodie Apr 18 2018 4:09 am I initially started watching this drama because of Lee Bo-Young, but then I was so hooked on this because of the storyline. This drama was so beautifully written and executed, so kudos to the amazing actresses and actors. I have never cried so much before watching a drama, but seriously, I suffered from dehydration when I reached the end. This show truly captured the meaning of what it is to be a mother, and what a mother is able to endure for her child. It was so painful to watch, but also so beautiful and I'm glad that I found this show. I can only recommend this. It is by far my favorite drama in this genre and if anyone should stumble upon this drama, give it a chance and watch it.

:') Mar 21 2018 2:30 pm definitely 9/10 drama! what's lacking is it's a bit slow-paced, but catch up very fast after ep8. I am most touched by Madam Cha the most, her character is so overwhelming and indeed she's a very good actress! i cried so hard toward the end of ep15, so heartbreaking yet very beautiful :') just curious how Hyena's mother is feeling after her own daughter chose Yoonbok's mom. As what Madam Cha once said, just who can break the bond between birth mother-child as it's the strongest bond ever exist and I actually believe that too ;) that's why I'm curious. anyway my fav lesson is surely Madam Cha!

sharmaine Mar 21 2018 1:52 pm OMG I have never cried so hard over a drama. This drama was amazing. It was well written and the characters were portrayed by good actors. The ending was really good. Usually K-dramas have terrible endings but this one was good. My only criticism is that there was not much development between the doctor and Kang soo jin. I think there should have been stronger romance between them because he was good guy and was good with Yoon Bok.

Anyway, great drama. I would watch again

This drama reminds me of humanity still exist and greatest love share between non biological mother and children can't be separated by any means if their own birth mother don't care of their children love of them and emotions.. Again it also reminds me (refers to soo jin's biological mother) Mother love to her children is the only true love in this world She is ever ready to sacrifice everything for her children to be happy irrespective of her situation.. im rating this drama 10 of 10.. Thank you so much for depicting the true love of mankind..

Everything in this drama was perfect and it made me cry more than Uncontrollably Fond. Every episode was a tear-jerker for me, one of a kind, a true gem. Highly recommended if you wanna know the true status of being a mother and if you wanna cry tonnes of tears. Just notice the dialogues, they have life lessons.

This kid is very amazing.. When she smile, it can make you smile and when she cried, it will also make you cry.. I cried a lot, the emotions was very real... I am glad for a happy ending for everyone of them especially for Kang So Jin for becoming a mother and Hye Na for becoming Yoon Bok and a daugther of Kang So Jin, which she waited for a long time...

I am looking forward to see Heo Yool in another drama in the future again...

The plot kept you hooked, the actors were amazing, and it literally played with your emotions every episode. I enjoyed it and totally recommend it. Just an fyi to new watchers, this is not a romance but more of a melodrama that will make you cry every episode haha

The first episode itself had me drenched in tears, beautifully written and the girl playing Hye Na acted as damn well that it actually surprises me how talented she is! No clue why it had gotten low ratings but this is one of the most meaningful dramas I’ve watched in a while.

You can really see that Hye Na doesn't want to be apart with her teacher and for her, Kang SoJin is her real mother... when she asked Kang SoJin to kidnap her one more time.. my tears won't stop flowing from my eyes...

It sometimes, being a Mother is not only giving birth or being blood related, but it is how we love and care for the child and how to stand for them...

Nothing left to say except for OMG my heart is breaking hard and waterworks will not stop flowing from my eyes. I'm not really a big fan of Lee Bo Young. But after this show, she might as well be my favorite actress in Kdrama land aside from the incredible Kim Hye Soo. I am sincerely hoping that because of Mother, Lee Bo Young will keep on getting relevant female roles. I loved her so much as an actress.

I can hear your voice was the first drama that I watched from her. She blew my mind then and still does. She never fails to impress me. She is a very underrated actress if you ask me. I hope she keeps getting more and more roles. She really deserves it.

Aj Mar 02 2018 3:34 pm Admittedly, there are plot gaffes, but though annoying, they do not intrude on the story and themes (unless you let them), which become more powerful every week. The actors are all wonderful, especially the child Heo Yool. My god she is brilliant. Thus far, I think this is one of the best KDramas I’ve watched.

The cinematography is beautiful, the writing is very tight (no filler, unnecessary stuff unlike other dramas), the acting is realistic and powerful. Production quality, in general, is superb. This is by far the best Kdrama that I’ve seen in a long time. Highly recommended.

Feb 25 2018 1:25 pm the japanese(original) version are better. a bit down to earth and closer to our reality. korean version are ripping apart the source material just for the sake of rating with addition of too many kdrama bullshit like a serial killer boyfriend, detective sherlock holmes, love potential, product placement, and over the top kdrama clumsiness and dumbness. sorry korean version just too pretentious. oh, while that serial killer boyfriend at it(kidnapping hye-na), just let him killed her already and get this series over with.

After watching several popular and underrated dramas, I can attest that Neilsen's and other TV ratings are not reflective of how good a drama is. This is a great Mother-Daughter drama. Every episode is flowing with emotions, and the actresses are delivering it well. I rate this as Recommended.

I hope this drama has a high ratings because the cast is amazing and so is the plot and the script! Kudos to the team and TVN as well! People should stop giving so much attention to cliche kdramas with love triangles. I used to love them but since every kdrama is like that, I cant stand watching them anymore. A drama like "Mother" will raise awareness in korean society if Knetz give it a chance.

She left her alone in the hotel (from which HN fled without a coat and ended up sick), at the park, at a restaurant, with the Dr and her bio mom (who was a stranger at the time). She has moved from house to house--living with the stranger whom she tried to get fake passport from, her bio mom, the Dr, and her adopted mother. She has no job, no money and is living off her adopted mom while she is on the run. SJ let her sister take HN to school for the first time and her sister is verbally abusive toward HN. Now Soo Jin’s adopted mother wants to disown her and now HN has run away.

peterh Feb 22 2018 2:43 am great drama. not many on such issues are being made in kdrama. stacks in western television though. ive noticed krama series that portray sexual assault spouse abuse child abuse and other korean culture taboos gets low ratings. while shallow eye candy shows with their glamorous rich oppas or sex up unnis get all the attention.

thats culture for you. my parents actually told my grandmother once that you cannot physically discipline a child as it is abuse here in australia. she replied that it was nonsense that back in her birth country it is normal and that it was nobody business but the family. and yes we are of asian heritage.

australia is far from perfect however its government does tolerate nor accept such cultural traditions anymore. laws were made and awareness are created to prevent such things. im glad i grew up here and not in my grandmas country.

They should be both put in prison for a long time. They damaged a child, not only physical abuse, but also mentally damage her childhood. For this movie, the good intention, Soo Jin should be under probation and serve some community time instead. Also, she is the one that Hye Na can rely on, so best thing that Hye Na can stay with her.

CP Feb 21 2018 3:52 pm This drama makes one aware of child abuse and the emotional pain and suffering of what a child has to go through at the hands of those that should be protecting them. Soo Jin should serve some prison time for kidnapping Hye-Na. I know she wanted to protect the child from her abusive situation and she had good intentions, but it's still wrong to take someone else's child. Bio mom should not be able to get back custody of child based on evidence police now have on child abuse, unless there are laws that can, at least try to rehabilitate mother with parenting skills and court monitoring appearances--minus her abusive boyfriend, who should be issued a restriction to keep a distance from child (he should end up in prison for his crimes). Also, the best interest of the child should be considered when deciding if to reunite with her mother.

It’s like korean society just want to wat h dramas like dots and call it good when its just the cliche three way love triangle and the wishy washy I love him then I dont love him stuff. Anyways, TVN keep up the great job for welling to tackle on MORE REALISTIC LIFE PROBLEMS OR ISSUES!! I love it how they tend to have more of dramas that tackles everyday life stories.. I love this ine because it sends out a clear message that the cycle never ends when the abuser is dead or gone. It continues unless the victims themselve swear to nver hurt anyone like their abuser. At times we failed. I hope that yoon bak does not go back to her mother but if the mother is willing to change there I can see why she would want to go becasue it is her mother afterall. No one can gorced her to stay with her adopted mother. It’s saf that she’s lying to herself that she foes not misses her mither but she does.. I hope that everything ends more realistically instead of peaches and cream. I hate saying this but seeing soo jin going to jail for several gor her crime would be a bittersweet ending. Its right for her and weong becasue she wanted to orotect the child soo bad so I will be satisfied and sad at the same time. Dang, all these time I thought that the sec sister was biological daughter to the adopted mother but she’s not! I dont know why she’s being a b about everything esp yhe money and becoming a chairwoman. She loves her mom just becasue eshe rich but if she was adopted to a poor mother i bet it would’ve been a different story.
