Set during a Joseon period where people went through severe hardship due to the Qing invasion (Jan. 3, 1637 to Feb. 24, 1637). A love story blooms during that time.

Lee Jang-Hyun (Namkoong Min) is a mysterious man who suddenly appears in society circles. He appears to be a cheerful person, but in fact he is not. He is a complex person with a deep and dark secret that he can't reveal to anyone. A woman named Yoo Gil-Chae (Ahn Eun-Jin) appears in front of him and his life changes. Yoo Gil-Chae is the daughter of noble a family. She is a lovely woman, brimming with confidence. While experiencing the upheaval caused by the Qing invasion and falling in love with Lee Jang-Hyun, she grows as a person.

Lee Jang-Hyun = Top! Namkoong Min played this character so perfectly. Seriously… so cool, smart, funny, and very charismatic.

The way he walks confidently with his fan, but still looks very masculine wow. He is clever, a successful businessman in that era, good at talking with important people, and most importantly… very loyal. A real man is like that. Once he truly chooses one woman, one is enough. Episode 21 made me cry so much. Finally seeing Lee Jang-Hyun and Yoo Gil-Chae together again… ah, my heart ?

Yoo Gil-Chae = played by Ahn Eun-Jin, was also Amazing. She perfectly showed how women can be proud, stubborn, cheerful, emotional, and still strong enough to survive difficult times.

The writer really understands women through Gil-Chae’s character.

The struggles between these two characters were so heavy and emotional, but written in such a detailed and beautiful way.

Honestly, I’m very surprised. Nowadays many K-dramas only have 12 or 16 episodes, but this drama bravely made 21 episodes.

And honestly? Writer, You Are Amazing. You really did a great job. No wonder this drama won the Baeksang Award ❤️

To the writer, director, all casting and all the team behind this drama, thank you so much. Please stay healthy always.

Now I’m curious to see Lee Jang-Hyun and Gil-Chae living happily together, building a family, and having children.

I will wait for Season 3. Please give us more funny, sweet, emotional, and heartwarming moments again.

I’m sure many people will never get bored of this story and will wait for Season, because we are love My Dearest.

Nadia Mar 06 2026 9:47 am I’ve been watching K-dramas since 2006, but I usually avoid historical dramas because I’m not ready to deal with sad endings. Back then, I almost decided to watch this drama because of the massive ratings it received, but in the end I didn’t.

Recently, I accidentally came across a video about it on Instagram. Before I knew it, I had already started watching though not before quickly checking on Google to see if the drama had a sad ending or not.

And I’m so glad I did. It was just superb. Nam Goong Min is one of the few actors who truly knows how to pick great scripts, and he never disappoints. I’m really glad I ended up watching this. Such a masterpiece. I’ll definitely be watching it again.

Ayomide Nov 06 2025 3:53 pm I started watching kdramas properly in 2024, and i've seen many incredible dramas but My Dearest takes the cake for me. I'm still in tears and I don't know what to watch next, so I'm rewatching it (as well as the bts). This drama truly taught me how love can show up without saying it, how to be patient and how to be brave. I enjoyed the history aspect of the story too, seeing how Joseon before, during, and after the Qing invasion gives me a new profound for Korea, which is needed as kdramas filled a void in heart. I see a lot of myself in both Gil-Chae and Jang-Hyeon too, the actors portrayed them very well. I can only hope as an aspiring actor myself I can act with much conviction as they did, and as a person I can love and be loved as Gil-Chae and Jang-Hyeon did (minus the war ofc).

It is an iconic drama, featuring amazing acting skills from Nam Koong Min. I definitely ached for the hero each time his good deeds didn't pay off, each time he was misunderstood, but the ending soothed that a lot. Thanks to all who contributed to this wonderful masterpiece.

Ok at start you have this vibe of "Gone with the wind" just made in Korea, but it unfolds to superb storytelling which original "quite frankly" lacks in some aspects (hehe pun intended). It states deep questions which has no simple answers, and the lines between main characters are delivered flawlesly, without a doubt its a gem within k-dramas. Hands down, one of my top 3.

Amjaba Nov 07 2024 4:14 am Oh my goodness. If there was a perfect way to wrap up this chaotic story, this was it. The male lead in this drama plays his role so well, he makes you feel everything and more. And the female lead, sending him away in chapter 1 was heart wrenching to watch. She told her story well. Such character growth from the start to the end. The lead males character and his loyalty the entire series shone through. This drama is one of the best I have seen in a while.

Historically, it happened in 1645. So the main events in the drama happened around 1636–1645 (spanning 9–10 years), which is why Gil Chae's growth looks so apparent (but weirdly she's the only one who looks grown in the end lmao all the others don't change much from Episode 1 to the last few episodes).

From 1645 to 1659 there's a 14-year-time skip which is totally unnecessary and isn't handled well. The amnesia trope was funny for the first time and kinda understandable given the severe beating to the head, but the second one? Totally unnecessary to repeat the same trope twice. Ruined the drama for me T.T

Anyways the acting and cinematography are on fire!!

Please watch it for the casts, they really did their best here especially Namgoong Min. I'll keep an eye on his next works, but Lee Jang Hyeon role is definitely something that will stay with me for a long time.

I've become a fan of Namgoong Min because of this series, truly superb acting. His emotional scenes, fighting scenes, everything—it really feels like he's become Lee Jang Hyeon, like the character truly lives and breathes. You could even see his pain and longing just by looking at his eyes and micro expression. Amazing.

Ahn Eun Jin does a phenomenal work too and I love Gil Chae, but Jang Hyeon steals every scene he appears in—he's on a league of his own.

The ending leaves me with a lot of questions tho. According to Episode 1, it's been 23 years.

Ryang Eum scenes in the prison were from 1659 and then it went back to Neungunri in 1636, just a little bit before Jin's invasion that historically happened in 1637.

However, only Ryang Eum got old, the others like Gil Chae, Yeon Joon, Eun Ae and Jang Hyeon stay the same lol.

We also never know why Ryang Eum was jailed and why he went crazy over the years.

Anyways it's just a small observation of mine, I just found it confusing and kinda bothersome.

But the acting and cinematography more than make up for these plot holes, the leads chemistry is on point and it's one of the most epic love stories ever told in K-drama.

I must say, this is the best Korean drama I have ever seen. My God, what??? I can't get over this drama; I'm at a loss for words to express my feelings honestly. Currently in Ep 14, What Was Jang Thinking When He Climbed The Auction Stand And Started Asking Why? He’s a smart man, he should have just quietly done his business. I especially loved the performances of Ahn Eun-Jin, GilChae, and Namkoong Min, Jang Hyun, their eyes/expressions were heartfelt, very emotional. The ending was perfect, emotional and perfect! This drama received many well-deserved awards. I also loved Miyeon's OST song and her video singing the song. For me, this drama is a must see.

This drama 's cinematography was really impressive. The acting was also great. Namkoong kim.and Ahn eun ji has a great chemistry. Anyway I feel sorry for the character of Ryang eum. He has a great devotion and one side love for jong hyun. But his love and passion towards jong hyun was never accepted by Jong hyun or anyone. Anyhow I will recommend this drama to all.

He has a great devotee and one side love for jong hyun. But his love and passion towards jong hyun was never accepted by Jong hyun or anyone. Anyhow I will recommend this drama to all.

Dec 17 2023 1:47 am where do i even start oh my god. i’ve been watching kdramas half of my life and i’ve never seen such a beautiful and flawless series. plot was amazing, i think the time setting was incorporated well with their stories. the delivery was exceptional, all the actors had eyes that convey everything you need to know about their characters. the story flow was flawless. no confusing moments, no unnecessary scenes, i’d say its mostly linear with just a few time jumps so it was reaaaally easy to follow. to even mention, it really was hooking. script, so beautiful and well written. jang hyun hears flowers blooming whenever he sees gil chae’s smile. sir, how are you speaking fluent in poetry. ost was also chefs kiss. i always get goosebumps i hear eunjin’s voice playing over her scenes— its like you hear her emotions. you see her emotions through her acting and hear it also with the ost. that’s the epitome of storytelling.

mr sunshine was my top 1 for a while but this one’s tooooo good ???

Yes it was a good ending and there were many touching and lovely parts, but it was frustrating at times when the female lead couldn't just be honest with her feelings and it kept bouncing back between the two. However, it was a good ending just strange how they played the "forgetful" card twice in this drama. Still, a good historical drama

It feels special to have seen the original showing of one of the greatest, if not the greatest of all k-dramas. My Dearest is artistry and storytelling of the highest order in every way. 연인 is a magnificent tapestry of human characters from the worst or weakest to the very best. The dialogs are usually short and fast but penetrating. We feel them intensely. They stir rainbows of emotions and thoughts. They make us follow the changes of every character over time. And they also make us reflect upon ourselves for brief moments.

There are many moving scenes that we shall not forget. The last 10 minutes of Episode 17 are beautiful, powerful and deeply moving. They show Min Nam-koong and Ahn Eun-jin - and the entire invisible drama crew behind them - at their very best.

Bright, proud and courageous Yu Gil-Chae has been hurt to her very core by the rape she lived through in Simiang. Tense, she hesitantly voices her fear of a devastating rejection to Lee Jang-Hyun. But Jang-Hyun quietly finds the spare, considerate and powerfully healing words that restore Gil-chae’s self-worth and let her feel that their love is not only alive but deeper than ever. Here Min Nam-koong is at his very best, and so is Ahn Eun-jin.

I wonder how this story would end but I’m really rooting for fate not separate them at the end. The suspense is at its peak but I hope the writer can give us a good ending like they did in alchemy of souls(I couldn’t believe they would be able to end the story in the last two episodes but they did). Being hopeful the writer would wrap it up with something pleasant and magical for us.

Also,I like the plot twist in episode 19. The amnesia card gat me rolling... Who knew Namkoong-min could act childish? Anyways, aggressively anticipating episode 20.

Gilchae running towards Janghyun and passing all the obstacles encountered just to see him at the end...

Hoping that Writer will give them a happiest ending.

Gil chae; "what if I say a foreign intruder took an advantage of me" My man:then I should give you a hug, it must have been hard , you must've suffered" What a heartwarming scene. I watched that scene countless times

But I guess,such a man exists only in TV

In the first episode, it seems like the first 20 mins (I think) is a foreshadow where Lee Jang Hyun, who was full of blood on his clothes, was being chased by group of men carrying their own weapons. Huwaaa I can’t.!

This is my favorite kdrama of all time. I've been watching kdrma since I was grades school and now that I've college graduated I still watching kdrama to feed my boring life.

This is the first time that I obsessed with Male actor (the Man who play as Janghyun) This Man is a one of the best actor for me. His acting is versatile and I can say that he is always gave his 100% effort to make sure the series will be successful and worth to watch. I am actually one of those people who doesn't watch kdrma because they're goodlooking or trendy actors. I am those people who watch drama based on the plot. Storyline and the way the actors perfectly played the role with their best. I hope they won a lot of rewards for this series because it's a great series that I watched since I started watching kdramas. And aso to the Gil Who played GilChae. I love her since Hospital Playlist. I love her cheeky smile.

I hope korean entertainment always creates a worthy kseries like this.

Janghyun will always has special part with my heart. I hope NamkoongMin creates more drama in the future because I always wanna watch him. To the writers and director and also to all the staff and crews great job and congratulations.

It hurts me Jang hyun wasn't the one who first had her ??? but the officer. I even wished he marries the princess. He suffered a lot but then Gil chae also suffered.

Nevertheless can we get a happy ending? I wouldn't want him to die just like the beginning of episode 1 where he was fighting a war while greatly outnumbered. A miracle should just happen. I want him married happily with Gil chae and have beautiful kids. I know he is going to sleep with her in episode 18??. God I love Namkoong min in this movie, didn't know he was the one in remember,the villain there. He's so real and handsome I fell in love with him but then he's married ???

Well, back to My Dearest, I was a bit disappointed to Gil Chae because she didnt chose Jang Hyun who loves her so much...but I think the tradition or culture has a big impact to Gil Chae as a lady of that time. I am still getting excited in every episode that what Jang Hyun will do and what to decide for both of them. Way to go to the Writer and Director of this series. Good luck and hoping for an amazing ending in the name of Love!

I realized to my broken heart that the 2 would not end up together but was glad to see Ryum sitting in a crazy bin waiting for his love not to be. Sometimes it is OK to give viewers the obvious. Life can he so depressing that it would have made the show even better for them to end together, although a good cry over his loss would be memorable too. I've been waiting for something as good as Mr. Sunshine & Love in the Moonlight. This surpasses all my expectations, not to mention the fantastic musical score. This show wins in everything--GC's growth, Lee's growing humility but strong male persona, and the strength of all others. Impressive!

The first episode starts with hopeles battle of Lee Jang Hyun, so there cant be a happy ever after. But even so, im hooked. I love all characters and i‘m absolutely amased by skills of all actors, but especially main cast.

The invasion of the Mongolians changed the entire country's direction. The inter-woven storyline shows the stark differences in attitudes of every day life in the morals and beliefs of two totally different attitudes to life and futures of each Country.

The parts played by all Actors are exceptional. Standouts for sure for the best part but the development of the storyline at times felt too slow, especially the relationship of the main Actors. All that being said, it would be a dream to have 4 episodes dropped each week for all of those fans, like myself, who are absorbed in this incredible story. and especially Actor Nam Goong Min (best Korean Actor ever). Hopeful of seeing him in other series

Even thought the drama always tease us with the unpleasant scene but it's really worth to watch. The strong love between JH and GC are the key of this drama and not forget the supporting character really complete it. Nam Goong Min & Ahn Eun-Jin deserves an award.. Daesang for sure! hihi, writer-nim...please make this happy ending. Jang Hyun & Gil Chae deserves to be happy after all the struggle..

It’s hard to get into such heavy stuffs again with no scene between ML & FL at all for 2 whole episodes. I am actually feeling bored of the drama at this point.

Both leading roles should be applauded for their actions, and forget not the writer who can write such an emotional scene. Namkoong Min did not let me down by becoming one of the best actors I have loved since watching him in "Chief Kim (Good Manager )". His facial expressions in ep 14 left you speechless and tortured your emotions without using any words. The Female lead would be on my list of actors to watch even though I have had my eyes on her already since my hospital playlist. Gotta go to search for her name and her shows after this as My Dearest ep 14 still left me hanging and can not move on. My Dearest 1 and 2 are worth watching for you who still hesitate to jump in

She is married and her husband will eventually find her after the facts and she will have to go back, and will eventually have children. This is a similar plot as ''Gone with the Wind'' unfortunately, she's utilitarian although she loves him she will never give up what she has to be with him.

Not because they didn’t end up together, but because she accepted the marriage proposal! She obviously doesn’t need him and I felt so proud of her as a woman because of that. Why would she accept him if she doesn’t love him, and just a few months since the deaths news of her “loved one” arrived.

Let’s not forget there’s someone investigating about Lee Jang Hyun, I believe they wil discover the truth and help him? Gil Chae on the other hand I believe his husband would somehow (abuse or sold her) based on the second part trailer. Or, my second guess would be her husband died in their early marriage or right before they get married and something would cause her and her family lost their “noble” title. That’s why she ends up become a servant and met the woman in blue (the one who chase the Josoen prisoner), she was tortured because the women in blue fell in love with Jang Hyun. I knew they just gonna end up together in the end because the series was all about sadness for the couple, it’s gonna be happy time for them in the second part. Jng Hyun would do whatever it takes to be with Gil Che ??

Her Daddy taught her that land is most important because "it's the only thing that lasts". In My Dearest this love of home isn't brought up at all. Gil Chae doesn't seem to care where she lives. She just doesn't want to desert her family because they need her. They would no doubt die if she took off alone with a lover. She doesn't want that on her conscience. I wonder if the love of her Homeland will appear in the second part of the series.

A different female personality, she has flaws, quirks and good about her and felt like the character development and future development is genuine and real. I do think there is a feminist twist that I did not like when JH mentioned I would die to for you....I am your servant....etc I felt that was a bit too much. As there is love and there is power play of some sorts. Besides that, I do genuinely think both love each other but that doesn't mean there is trust which is important for a relationship to work. JH mentioned multiple times she needs to grow up and the man is very ambitious, this is the reality. I am unsure why everyone kept mentioning she is evil, she is definitely the opposite. Yes she is selfish but can we all say we selfless? I don't think so. Look at how she helped Eun Ae when she was attacked and when her maid needed to deliver her baby. I don't know what else she needs to do show and do for others to think otherwise. I do think she is immature, blindly in love and childish. However, these are not qualities we can fault her on, she lived in a bubbled environment and you can see her character development. I do hope they end up together as they seem like a good match, they are too cute and have the best of banter. I cannot wait for the next season. October can't come quick enough.

Kim Sep 10 2023 2:41 pm I believe season 2 will be a sad ending as well. Recap to episode 1, the male lead character said "do you hear that? That's the sound of flowers?" Or something like it. It is the same phrase he said when he first saw gil Chae, the female lead character. Except this time he's on the beach, seems like he's out-run by the military. I have a feeling he'll die on that beach and the thought of her was the last thing entered his mind despite the parting in season 1 and possibly moving on for half of the season 2.

Viviane Sep 09 2023 8:26 pm I believe that, in the end, they will get back together. The female lead chose to remain with her family and friends as leaving all behind for love alone is not necessary. The male lead has goals of his own to pursue and, as any career driven man, he goes after what he wants first; love, romantic love, is secondary; the male lead can find other arms to soothe his sexual and emotional needs while he busies himself building his own future. For the female lead in that era, there is nothing left for her once her husband dies or leaves her for another woman, let alone a lover no matter how pationate he feels for her at a given time. Of course, I was sad to see them go their separate ways. The male lead might pursue this other female deserter hunter and they might become somewhat close for they are sharing the same trade, however, what has driven him to the female lead in the first place is bound to come back to haunt him. I believe they, in the end, they will find each other again.

Hafsat Yerima Sep 09 2023 2:00 pm I was just eagerly waiting for ep 11 to be released,i wasnt even aware that there is season 2 am so angry rn..Seriously the drama is good the ML and FL had good chemistry but i was kind of disappointed in the last episode by now i think this drama wont have a happy ending i so much felt it for Jang hyun why is she doing all those things to him,what is her problem?after all the love he has given and shown her but in the end she had to choose her family over him..Plss in season 2 just let him move on the way she did by getting married she doesnt deserve him or his love at all,let her feel the painn he felt when she left him,like what Ryang Eum said to him she will only bring misery and bad luck to him..

I humbly ask that the current lead actress does not change (Gil chae) and that young master Lee falls out of love with that new woman. And that Gil Chae and Lee go back together BUT it must not be obvious we the viewers need to be confused and not suspect that they'll be together. Thank you

Ahn Eun Jin is still first female lead and will remain so throughout. Nam Goong Min picked her for the role of his lifetime love, his Dearest. That's not going to change. We already know Lee Chung Ah's character is evil: she's a bounty hunter, that means she kills for money. The height of evil. She's just added to spice things up and to keep you addicted so you come back after a month to watch the drama again. :)

Furthermore, gilchae's love for janghyun is not strong enough for her to trust him so yea its better to end here n move on.

GC has grown as a woman with full of responsibility with her family. if i were GC and stand on her shoes, i will do the same thing. Family over Love. The last minutes of episode 10 is like the end of GilCahe as female lead: even if she is not married, her familly is still here and her brother is still young. And she humiliated him so much and so Many times, that it’s impossible to forgive her.

The production did a lot of works to remove her from show. If they want to keep her as main lead they could find a solution for her family. Why? She is fantastic actress I don’t like GilChae from episode 8, and I hope she’ll not come back as female lead in saison 2…. He deserved to be happy and to be loved. She never loved him, she just played a role of heartbroken lover, when she was thinking he dead. As she played role with her fist love.

Now I’m thinking how this could play out: could both of the main characters go in opposite directions and live with regret; or will they go their separate ways and marry another, only to find each other later- perhaps after war takes their spouses; or will they run back to each other; will one of them die, and the other lives with regret? Maybe it’s because I’m older now, and it makes me sad to see how they waste time apart from each because of the poor communication and misunderstandings when they could be together and comfort each other through the difficult times. Maybe because my husband, who was much older than I, had more insight, and knew me better than I knew myself… Anyway, now we are left waiting- just as their love waited for the other’s. It makes me sad.

Dora Sep 03 2023 12:37 am Finished ep 10, sobbing thru the end. This drama is so sad. The cut between part 1 and 2 is also so cruel. Gil Chae grew to be very responsible to her family. Knowing that his father needed her made her stayed and left the man of her dream. Jang Hyun left with a broken heart. As he has always kept his words, he will surely move on, find someone new, but at the end fate will brought them together and again separate them again. That is how the melodrama goes.

Tryagain Aug 27 2023 11:26 pm I'm only on my second episode of the first season, and I've cried twice. The song man, the fucking song really pulled my heartstrings and played with my emotions. I can feel the longing from the lyrics and it only fueled me into a somber state lol.

Namkoong nailed portraying someone who falls in love. His subtle microexpressions like the way he couldn't help but smile when the Female Lead talked, the way he couldn't help but gaze at her with those loving eyes. This drama reminded me of how good falling in love felt but also how it will fuck you up when things go wrong.

I can feel it in my bones that this series will leave my heart battered and broken similar to how the Goblin series was.

And I didn't have to wait long to watch the second season. I like the story and it's not boring at all. The plot is fairly fast and the chemistry of the actor and the actres really feels in my heart. I feel like I'm getting into the story. I like royal stories that don't just focus on the struggle for the throne and the intrigues of the royal family. This drama presents a different story about an invasion from another regions. Although this story is fictional, it still presents historical facts. This drama talks about the Mongols, etc. so I can learn history too.
