Shin Karino (Yu Yokoyama) is an unpopular manga writer and he is single. He lives in an apartment complex that has a rule forbidding children from living there. One day, Shin Karino's doorbell rings. When he opens his apartment door, he sees a small boy. The boy is 5-year-old Kotaro Sato (Eito Kawahara). Kotaro Sato tells Shin Karino that he moved into the neighborhood. Shin Karino makes a weird face, because of the rule of his apartment complex. Kotaro Sato says that he lives by himself. At first, Shin Karino is annoyed by Kotaro Sato, but residents of the apartment building, including Shin Karino, become attached to Kotaro Sato.

Yes because ofcourse the characters are work of fiction, and no because there are stories and news about children that were abandoned in their apartments living alone for months by their parent/s. It's a subject that is hard to tackle let alone talk outloud.

Wan Mar 16 2022 10:30 pm Watching this on Netflix but never thought that I will get hooked by it. It do touched every inches of my heart. Even though my situation and Kotaro is not the same, but there's a thing about this drama anime makes my heart breaks into pieces.

I am too-was born in a broken household. And Kotaro seems to be like one too. He had to stay alone and remain strong to live again with his father. He blamed himself for not being strong enough and to be honest, I used to have the same mindset as Kotaro. A kid should not be mature at his age, but Kotaro and some kids from the broken family, probably mature more that we always expected.

I literally cry at every episode because I used to think the same things that Kotaro did (well, except more stupider ofc) but some memories can't just be forgotten. It stays there in the heart and ready to explode.

Kotaro lives alone definitely a suitable series for everyone. Waiting for the second season!

Mitche Mar 14 2022 3:34 am I watched Kotaro on Netflix for about 10 minutes. I find it funny and cute, yet strange. I thought of those people in Japan that I have read about and seen n documentaries who do not have contact with the outside world, living alone or even at home but never going out and totally without a social life. Also, those people who tend to just disappear. And they seem to isolate themselves at a young age and continue in isolation. I am curious if the writer of this series think of these reclusive people when he created Kotaro. Or maybe he used an intelligent but observant child who just speaks and is not intimidated by anyone to be a critic of life, in particular contemporary life in Japan.

There is no law in Japan forbidding creation of a manga with a five year old boy (or girl) living by themselves in Japan. Remember that this is fiction, not reality. Do not try to attempt this at home. This manga is similar to Superman. Does not exist in reality.

Rorosan Nov 20 2021 7:51 am The storyline and characters are perfectly fit. Heartwarming, comedic and tearjerker. The dynamics between Kotaro and Shin is very natural and organic. But of course, Eito as Kotaro for me is outstanding. Definitely must watch 10/10 rating!!!

In North America, I think, every young child under 12 will have to have supervision of an adult while at home, a parent or a baby-sitter. Are there no similar laws in Japan? I did notice the lawyers and the law office in the series, but can they set something up like that with the superintendent (Kotaro living by himself) on their own, under the table or above the law, if such a law exists?

Miu Hozuki Sep 11 2021 2:46 am Indeed it is not possible for a five year old child to live alone. They hint aplenty in the drama that the Lawyer who is assigned to him, that is the law firm owner, made a deal with the apartment owners ( like friendship favor ). To those who can understand some asian culture at least, it's fairly well hinted.

The owner says the foster homes did not end well for Kotoro, so, he rather choose to teach the kid independence than love of parents. He always wonders if it was a right decision or not, but when he saw how well kotoro got along with rest of the residents, his heart has calmed down!

Grandmalee Sep 05 2021 9:56 am My first question when watching this drams: Is it possible for a young kid of 5 to live by himself in an apartment in Japan? The show doesn't seem to follow norms and logic. Apart from the aspiring manga author played by Yu Yokoyama, few other characters make good sense. Why Issey Ogata plays double, in an awkward manner, as the superintendent couple is totally beyond me. There are funny moments in the series but not enough to warrant a positive recommendation.
