Various contestants take part in a game show with a prize of 10 billion won. The contestants who can cheat the otehrs wins the prize. Contestants include genius swindler Cha Woo-Jin (Lee Sang-Yoon) and naive college student Nam Da-Jung (Kim So-Eun).

Yana Jul 12 2023 7:58 pm Haven't watched the japanese series of Liar Game nor read its manga so I can't truly say if this is a good adaptation or not. And if you are also like me who doesnt know anything about its original source, you will most probably enjoy this drama.

Very impressive writing btw, one of the few kdramas who has a good script. Intellectually challenging, you will be engaged to think because if not you will most probably be lost. As for me the story itself is engaging enough to keep me glued to the screen, and the drama is not hard to follow. It's a good drama overall- exciting, thrilling and oftentimes romantic.

Park Min May 09 2023 6:26 pm The drama lacked the Korean flavor in its adaptation from the original Japanese one. Usually when the source is Japanese, the adaptation will take the core idea and add its Korean spin but not in this one. This feels like it was fully produced by Japan but with Korean cast. From writing to dialogue, characters and editing, even the teaser at the very last scene. Speaking of the cast, this is Kim So Eun worst performance, I've seen from her other roles and she's usually better than this, I don't why she's like that here.

Noel Sep 06 2021 5:11 am As an avid fan of tge manga and original JP series I was dissapointed. Yes its a good drama but thats what it is a over dramatized Korean drama. Trying to make the heeoes connected amd and turning Liar game about some sort of pkot of revenge ugh. Original Liar game is about mind games and true genious of one showing but to have the kindness and truth win over all. I did not feel the rrue comradery between 2 heroes and I did not root for the heroine by the midway. So if u want enjoy it gen think of it as individual drama without any vonnection to the manga or JP series. P.S the Japanese one had much more interestung games and characters and it was fun because the characters over acted like the manga. But here they were doing down to earth acting that just did not do justice to the original source material.

Casual Oct 30 2020 8:20 am This is one of the few remake korean drama that I can say as good as the original version. Well maybe not as good but its definitely got the potential to be as good as the jap version. I honestly doesn't like a remake drama (especially k-drama), cause fan will always be biased about it, but this one is different. It's really good. Basically it goes beyond my expectation and managed to prove me wrong. Too bad season 2 is probably never gonna happen. It's been six years since its released.

As much as I like Kim So Eun, unfortunately her style and temper just doesn't appeal here. Lee Sang Yoon was okay, I guess, but nothing special or memorable. They added a third main character played by Shin Sung Rok. While he did great job, alas the focus of the plot on him was at the expense of making the games feel shallow and unimportant.

Kamilia5 Aug 06 2019 5:24 pm I watched the Japanese version of Liar Game first, and immediately got hooked. I binged watched both seasons and both movies. Then I found out that there was also a Korean version, and because the thrill was still in my mind from the Japanese version (and also because Kim So Eun was involved), I decided to continue to feed my addiction with the Korean version of Liar Game.

Naturally the comparisions between both versions would form in my mind as I watched the latter series. Several major differences really stood out. While the Korean version wraps around the typical Korean melodrama, it also detracts from the central purpose and theme of the Liar Game.

The Korean version builds up a megaplot surrounding the main characters and the villain. The payoff in the end does it justice, at the expense of the amount of time and focus it took away from the games. As a result, that leaves less time to explain the game rules and the strategies and counter-strategies devised by the players.

Speaking of which, the Korean characters are merely players in a game show, while the Japanese players have or at least show more interest and desperation in wininng the games--or at least the prize money. The Japanese version really drive home over and over why players need the money so bad, thus driving their greed and selfishness during the games. Hence the female protagonist has a bigger role and more difficult task to convince all players to work together.

Unfortunately, the major aspect that has been downplayed in the Korean version is the role of female lead. Whereas in the Japanese version, the female lead character (whose name Nao means Truth) had a more consistent and effective personality that is heavily emphasized throughout both seasons. She had more active parictipation in the games and strategies. Moreover, she was more effective in winning over the other players, especially the male lead.

On the contrary, the Korean version made the female lead too passive. She was mostly just a side character watching the two male leads compete during the games iand outside of them, unbeknownst to her). Her lines--which were more abundant in the Japanese version--have been replaced with the megaplot that involves the second male lead character. Consequently, and more importantly, she was just not as believable as far as trust and altruism towards other players.

In other words, it's a matter of "show, not tell" adage. The Korean version "tells" us that female lead is somehow trusting and generous--and there definitely were some bouts of that. However, her trustfulness takes a back seat--or rather becomes merely a tool--for the megaplot.

Contrarily, the Japanese version really emphasized the female lead's actions and speeches throughout the series. They present the tension and dilemma whether such a trustful person can win the games by mere willpower and adherence to her altruistic principles. This supposedly goes against the concept of Liar Game, where players are expected to be selfish, lie, and cheat in order to win. Eventually the other players (and the audience), thus becoming immersed and mindful of her strong personality, truly believes her to be a saint, a savior who would save all the other players.

As far as the casting for the male and female leads, the Japanese actor and actress are more believable and likeable in regards to their roles in Liar Game. The Japanese female lead played by Toda Erika seemed purely innocent and happy-go-lucky. That she has no greed or selfish motive to deny the other players from their money. Then Matsuda Shota play the Japanese male lead, always scheming up winning strategies and counter-strategies, and reading people's expressions and reactions. His squinting is very memorable and unique.

Ore-sama Aug 20 2018 1:38 pm I refrain myself from comparing both Japanese and Korean version..and watched it as two unrelated stories. So I can see both are really great drama! Which one is better is matter of personal preference. Overall, I appreciated both version messages, concept, culture, and filming style. Yes, I enjoyed every bit of the drama! Lee Sang Yoon character is new to me event though i had seen him in his drama as smart and gumptious.. this time he is cold..very cold. Shin Sung-Rok the never ending villain role but this time you are so scaryyyyy! mote than your role in My Love from the Star. Story: Intense! Thrilling and you cannot stop yourself from watching and waiting for the next episode. Cast: Aside from Kim So Eun all is good! even Jo Jae-Yun ( Jo Dal Goo ) did so well..

CWA Nov 06 2017 12:19 pm To say it shortly - the originally game-focused series got a whole additional and typical korean plot in this. There are advantages and disadvantages. I slightly prefer the japanese version, but if u watch both, the comparison is quite interesting!

It wouldn't be best if both versions were the same plot. So I prefer that you view each version important and different as well. I will always prefer the Korean version. The Japanese version somehow got more feelings of the manga. Particularly with Matsuda Shota's acting. And I love how in the Japanese version, they don't rub the love story in your face, but leave small cute hints behind...

Ellie Sep 12 2016 4:34 am I first read the manga, then I watched the Japanese drama/movie and then I watched the Korean version. I still think this is the best route to take with this series. The Japanese version is very focused in the gameplay, and every detail from the characters' backstory seems to serve the purpose of [explaining] their behaviour in the game. The Korean version is actually the opposite: the games and how they play it [explain] their characters.

Tbh watching the Korean version was more comfortable to me because the idea that this is a TV show is kept significant throughout the drama. There's always that "insurance" that nothing too drastic will occur "behind the scene", and there's always the PD and such to keep an eye on things; unlike the original version when everybody and everything just seem to go crazy.

This is honestly one of the few remakes that deserves a place right next to its original. It respects the important aspects of the original, yet still offer genuineness. All the games are similar but the order is different, yet everything still makes absolute sense (if not even better than the original, but again, I dare not say so myself out of respect for the original). This version has "built" itself upon the original frame beautifully.

Reasons (or if you want to read the long version):

(Also note that I haven't watched the last 2 episodes of the Korean version as I'm writing this.)

Although the Korean version is basically a remake, so you can watch it first if you really want, watching the Japanese version first have few advantages (in no particular order):

- The plot in the Japanese version and Korean is different and the information and expectations could get in the way if you watch the Japanese version last. Not so much if you watch it first though. Also the plot in the Japanese version could feel hollow after watching the Korean, since it did a better job with the characters' backstories and the overall plot. Actually the Japanese version has very little to no plot outside the games, while the Korean has some and it plays an important role.

- The pacing in Japanese version is kinda bad: there are quite a few moments which drag for long time for the drama effect. You might think it's fine the first few times, but it's used way too often and get's annoying. The series is still very fun to watch, especially the later games, but still. The Korean version is way better in this case, so watching Japanese after the Korean would make it more difficult watch.

- The Japanese version is longer (2-3 times?) and since the Korean uses mostly the games from the beginning of the series (Season 1), it could help a little to remove the deja-vu. Or you can take a break for a few months or even years.

If you watch Korean first and Japanese second, the first season of the Japanese would be a lot harder to watch, since the games are executed pretty much the same, except the last in the first Season. Since the Korean adds to the plot and even a new game, it's is a lot easier watch after the Japanese version and you'll still have fun even if you have a general idea of what will happen in the games.

Conclusion:

It might sound that the Japanese version is not worth watching at all since the Korean does it better, but it's not entirely true. It's just that both versions are worth watching and do some things better than the other.

I hope I answered your question and you understood why the Japanese should come first in this case.

namgilfan Jul 23 2016 9:07 pm Slick, sophisticated Korean version of a Japanese drama based on a popular manga. I loved all the actors and how they portrayed their characters' growth over the series. Shin Sung Roku makes the best villains ever. I tried the Japanese version but felt it was played more for laughs and absurdities. Couldn't finish it. The Korean version was more to my liking and I hope we get a season 2 someday.

SamuraiSx Feb 11 2016 10:52 am Sorry, due to my all love for Korean cinema, this version CAN'T EVEN LICK JAPANESE ORIGINAL one! *O* Japanese version manifest the right feels from manga (from which this dorama was made) and this Korean version is just flashy weird thing with not so good cast of actors for this story. Liar Game manga by Kaitani Shinobu is set to be deep psyhological dangerous but a GAME. people and their weakness and main Nao as contradict to today's humanity of more and more lies - absolute HONESTY and belief in it and people. Shinichi on other hand became like that cause of personal reasons, but he is utmostly composed person who can look into psyhological depths of humans, but other thing he can't look into - heart - that tells Nao. Also Dealers for game aren't like here in Korean version showed.. I DIDN'T LIKE IT in all. for me Matsuda Shota did the best job acting as Akiyama Shinichi and Erika Toda just was perfect honest but strong Nao! ad games and feel and psyhologically acting of other actors and scenes... Japanese is the best. I am surprised Korean did this version, but it isn't good, better they did some of their manhwa :/ I bet they could better give that mode of manhwa sinc it's theirs Korean one thing.. and SO MANY GOOD MANHWA there never being made into dorama except for romantic ones.. x_x

KC Jan 02 2016 10:44 am The plot & acting is excellent but I had a very difficult time trying to understand the rule of the games (I hate maths and stats) so I had to stop and think and repeat the scene several times until I get the point. It took me much much longer to finish the story compare to other dramas (although it's only 12 episodes) :(

BTW, sometimes Nam Da Jung is acting so stupid that she is boring.

B Sep 24 2015 7:45 pm It's funny. The manga was amazing up until the final arc. The Japanese drama was a hot mess from start to finish if you read the source material. They completely villainized Fukunaga and changed her character. And this was just really bland and dry, though I guess I can't help but feel that way after Liar Game finally finished after multiple hiatuses and I watched both seasons of the drama and the movie half a decade ago.

If anyone wants Liar Game at its best, read up until the musical chairs arc in the manga. Or even better, just watch One Outs and then continue with the manga. It's by the same guy who created Liar Game, but it's fantastic the whole way through.

It started out slow in the beginning, but as it continued, it picked up the pace and was a very interesting and thought provoking drama. I loved how the ending turned out. I pray there is going to be a Korean sequel to this, as I loved it so much more than the Japanese version.

This was lauded by so many and I am nt disappointed. Far from it. Its so well paced. Im so pleased I will include this drama in top 13 dramas of all time. Its THAT good. I nvr read the manga nor saw the j-version, so idk hw different or true it is. BUT as a stand alone show it rocks!

I would think the same as the current NDJ be betrayed and angry. but HWJ amaze me with what he did to NDJ. Yumi Jul 28 2015 10:39 pm I dun think it's a remake,,its more like a new story based on the same idea with the same games idea,they didn't even bother explaining the games well,,it was like, ok so you watched the jap ver,then why do I bother putting more details, u already knows what's gonna happen,, I'll just change some stuff, I'll make the male casts as a female and vice versa,then I'll add some non-important stuff and here u go,, well,I have to admit,, I liked this drama tbh,,the cast are acceptable,SSR was amazing,awesome and his evil acting was perfecto!!! I rise my hat for him,,the story twist was nice as they connect one with another,,but,if u have to ''compare'' or think if this one as a liar game drama ,it will be a fail,,well!! After all u dunno, I liked it, but i.tooooootally didn't expect it to be.like that...

Like the game in episode 4 the way they explain the game with 3 team and Mr.X is so confusing unless if you had watch the Japanese version then it will rather difficult to comprehend the situation.

The game is nothing new all copied from Japanese version meh I expect they will invent new creative game but heck. Also, it make no sense they do not create a situation of win or lose it all (if you compare it really doesn't matter if the participant really lose unlike in Japanese version you had to compensate with your own money when you lose the in game cash). I wonder why they try so hard in the game but the writer want us to believe they participate because of greed.

Another fail remake.

G Taylor Jul 10 2015 12:12 am I like how the writers took a simple and less intimidating subject and made the viewers feel as if it were a life or death situation. They set the mood and tone extremely well. Every time I watch I get really nervous for them and feel as if losing will be the end when in reality they just don't get the money or "the truth" and can go back to there normal lives and find another way to obtain these things. Watching this show it truly makes you believe that money is the most important thing and getting it through this game is the only way. I find it amazing that the writers of this program can do this.

I was worried about the possibilities of ruining the stories bcs of dramas, filler, etc, but the the director and all the staff did a great job. Amazing cast indeed. Unknown May 11 2015 7:21 pm I finally decided to watch this drama and ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!! It's the first time I've seen a drama that doesn't really focus romance wise. It was interesting, as if it was also making the viewers play the game too. The techniques used was fab and it really got me hooked. Cheesy as hell in my opinion - not nearly as thought provoking and intense as what the manga actually brings to the table - but afterall it comes from the creator of the LIAR GAME himself so it's understandable why it's so much more superior.

As far as the japanese drama vs the korean drama - korean drama wins as far as production value goes. I'd take Matsuda Shota and Erika Toda anyday as far as actors and likability goes. As far as direction both are honestly just damn average.

NOTHING will come NEAR the awesomeness of the MANGA period.

Irregardless of what people say, the k-dramas that become hits, with few exceptions comes from j-dramas that often more than not comes from mangas. Besides, both dramas, the k-drama especially is really off from the actual story...cause the manga, did not end yet! kdramas always tries to romanticize things...which, in the case of this story, shouldn't. Ignorant people like you should shut the hell up.

I myself prefer the Japanese version for its style and grittiness but if they have a season 2 for the Korean version, it could be a toss up. Both are a must watch!

Kang Do Young is obviously the evil even he admit to regret what he did but he can't change anything just because he is being programmed to be the evil, i remember when he said he should tell asap before the confusion will got him again. and i think the season two that many people talk about is not about kang do young anymore but the walden which is the mastermind of liar game that do young talked about and as we know that even do young want to be the good one he won't be, just because he was being programmed by the mastermind to be that bad and nothing can change it except the mastermind tried to make another experiment to him and don't make do young to be nice people just because he move by da jung's words or realize blah blah it's totally nonesense for me! and i think the mastermind thing is another story even it related but the story between do young, woo jin, and da jung is over since we knew everything abut their story and this drama has nothing to do with love things. so if they want to make another seasonthen i could say it's nothing to do with them except they want to add loveline between the three of them than it would be so damn interesting to watch

Even without focusing on any romance between the two main heroines, the drama was perfect. Each of the supporting characters were so memorable that I never forgot any of them. Characters like Jaime and Kang Do Young had amazing character development. This is probably my favorite drama so far and I hope that they make a SEASON 2! Fingers crossed, I hope that Liar Game continues on.

I got tired of remakes that just copies the original but this time Liar Game KR has raised the bar. Giving the games new twists made it entertaining to watch even to us whose been a fan of the JP version. SSR is really a good villain, LSY and KSE also are good. I'm hoping for a kissing scene though, hope they'd give a fan service in the finale. :-)

Some viewers are not enjoying this version as much because they can't stop comparing it the other ones and often judge the littlest difference... The people who haven't watched any other versions are enjoying this version a lot because the casts are all superb in their acting, the plot is brilliantly laid out, the soundtrack is perfectly picked and placed, and the added animations and the cinematography is seductively presented. My brain is always calculating and my butt is always on the edge of my seat when I watch each episode. Well done staffs, writers, director and producers.

In the manga Fukunaga is a very attractive male to female transgender but in the Japanese drama he is a campy gay. I was hoping the Korean version would correct that.

It's just not so compelling and they often dragg things up , dialogues are often wooden , there's no qurikiness and they want to show up everything in a pretty, perfect way .I think the popularity of K dramas lay mostly in pretty, plastic faces; and as far as I know it works perfectly for appearance obssessed youngsters.

I've watch Season 1 and 2 of the original Liar Game plus the Final Stage and Reborn movie. It's Japanese. They are sticking to the original manga where the characters are crazy.

This Korean Liar Game gave it a really Korean feel and atmosphere so props to this version of a really awesome series.

ace Nov 11 2014 7:47 pm I watched the Japanese version but it was long enough ago all that I really recall is the vaguest of images and ideas. So I cannot make a true comparison. But I might like this version a little more. I feel that visually this one hits the marks better. But the Japanese version naturally seemed more original. At least the first one did. And there is a lot to be said for being first. Still, if you liked the Japanese version you should like this one as well, I'd think. Just different version of the story. I think 10 episodes is absolutely the right choice. This type story can be retold but if each story goes on too long it loses its soul. You can only have so many false leads and turnarounds before the plot becomes unstable. When it does that then more and more things feel like plot holes.

In the Korean ver things are different-the story is changed somewhat but I could actually take this drama seriously and the acting is superb.

Clearly this is not a re-make of the original but a series based on it. Fans of the old versions....relax. Obviously Japan and Korea have different audiences who enjoy different things so I'm not sure what the hate is all about... but who am I to judge, I've never seen the jap one so I'm not comparing at all. I find the korean adaptation enjoyable? But maybe that's just my preference.

Let's be honest here, the Japan ver. shows more thrill and evil faces of people... and moreover the characters are really different so it's better not to think it's the same drama only the games are IDENTICAL!! PEOPLEE!!! The Japanese ver. is old but watch all 2 seasons and 3 movies of the Japanese liar game AND THEN watch this you'll find it better that way!!!! TRUST ME

I have a theory on how the game will play out, curious to see if I turn out to be in the park with that. I will say this much, I believe that all the players with the exception of Professor Ha, Nam Da Jung, and the Hacker all other players are paid plants to purposely lose the game.

Now to wait and see...............

I think that I have figured out the entire premise with out having seen or read the original story. Am curious to see if it unfolds like I think it will. I will say this much with the exception of Proffesor Ha, Nam Da Jung, and Betrayer X(the hacker) that every player is a paid to lose the game.

Now to wait and see how it all unfolds.......

But it's better to treat this like an alternative universe to the Liar Game manga/jdorama...only with similar characters popping up, probably using the similar game concepts too. It just sad that it feels like they took away fear concept of what might happen if you participate and lose (fall into immense debt, be sold for experients etc). Of course it just aired so can't judge to far into it.

And as far as i can see from the Trailer isn't the main girl supposed to look a bit "dumb" and innoncent. Hopefully it will do the Japanese version its justice by making the characters evil (the other players that is) and give the entire drama a creepy vibe. They already gave away who the main antagonists are. It looks like it will be publicized instead of the tournament being secretive since it is a "reality game show". And this is only 10 episodes. I don't expect much, though I'll still watch it.

Only that she need to focus more to choose qualified roles, which she could show-off her potential. Lee Joon and Kim Ji Won would have made a wonderful Akiyama and Nao. Not that I hate the actors... it's just that i think the latter two would fit the roles better!!!

They are both extremely amazing actors and they fits the images of the characters well!!!!!! It'd be like a dream comes true for me if they were really casted!!!!!!!! Just thinking about it makes me wanna cry happy tears...

Agree Sep 08 2014 1:21 pm I agree with Angeles about Kim Ji Won. But regarding Akiyama, Yoo Yeon Seok would be a good casting too~~~

Nocturnal Sep 01 2014 8:41 am Matsuda Shota was the perfect Akiyama but I'm curious to see what the Korean remake does with Fukunaga. The Japanese series turned him into a really campy gay character but in the manga he is a trap with amazing crossdressing skills and while not as much of a genius as Akiyama, still very much able to hold his one. I'd love to see a live action version that does his character justice.

Krnwr Aug 30 2014 1:21 pm It's quite a difficult task to remake this kind of show, I doubt it for some unknown reason that it will satisfy the expectations of the original's fan, korean remakes, mostly, were used to be disappointing. But it's tvn anyway :D best of luck for all the crews! Please choose the cast wisely

FS Aug 26 2014 7:33 pm YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! FINALLY A KOREAN REMAKE OF THIS ONE!!! Loved the series... OMG, I STILL DO! I'm so sad there hasn't been another japanese season of this one :(( Hope the korean remake will have a NICE ending...rather than an unfinished one ._.
