Set during the Joseon Period.

Kook In-Yeob (Jung Yu-Mi) is the only child in a noble family. She is famous for her beauyl and stylish appearance. Due to an incident, her status falls to the lower class. As she struggles through her misfortune, she becomes stronger.

Servant Moo-Myeong (Oh Ji-Ho) is the most attractive servant in Hanyang, but he is also a mysterious man who hides his real identity and pretends to be a servant.

Park Min Dec 11 2023 3:29 pm Despite the intriguing setup focusing on the lives of servants, the drama missed the mark when it came to delivering a good dynamic storytelling between maids and nobles. It felt like a jigsaw puzzle scattered all over the place with no clear picture, just random bits and pieces all jumbled up from the typical lens of servants and maids back then. I don't think they did a good job with their portrayal that servants/maids are equal as people. Honestly, I was left hanging, craving some real depth and a solid story from what could've been something different and unique.

Ciepao May 01 2021 6:41 am After watching episode 1, I already got bored. I think the story of this drama is great, I'm just not sure what really bores me while watching it. Is it the acting of the actors and actresses? Or the actors/actresses that they pick for this drama just don't really suit or not compatible for the character that they play? And I don't feel any chemistry between the 2 leads. The leading man can play like the father of the leading actress that's why I don't feel any ‘butterflies' between them????

Overall I will give this drama a 4/10. I think the story is great, The actors/actresses just don't feel right to me. In short they don't hooked me up.

Eve Mar 06 2021 4:01 am This drama had a solid premise with a noble daughter being forced into servitude, and being set up in the house of some nasty nobles including her former fiance. Even though the spiteful daughter got quite tiring quickly, it was somewhat satisfying to watch her torment herself thinking she was tormenting In Yub and every other servant.

This drama quickly turned into a poor mans revenge drama. I lost count of how many times the main leads were made villains, then given passes, so they could come and go as they please, only to be made villains again. I know we must suspend some disbelief with dramas but characters like In Yub and Dan Ji would have died ten times over from the lady nobles if the writing had anything about it. I can understand In Yub being given plot armor but Dan Ji asking if she could still live in the same house after her child is born is naivety, that Dan Ji as a character, is not written to possess.

I think my last tick of attempting to take it seriously was when the King told Moo Myung he was the one who was trying to kill In Yub, and Moo Myung took it so politely that he just continued to report what happened after the attempt on her life.

Of course the purest of characters like Sa Wol are made into sacrificial lambs near to the ending of the drama to invoke the feeling that everything is getting serious business but as it's a hard drama to get attached to the characters or somewhat invested, the effect fell flat.

I have as much to say about the chemistry between the leads as there was chemistry apparent, meaning nothing at all.

The good thing to come out of it was the somewhat easy life a handful of the servants received after being taken in by In Yub, being unable to take the self sacrificing for love, disappearing act that In Yub works her way to be her finale any what seriously, I found some relief in the comfortable life the servants managed to find at the end. They just wanted to live and eat after all.

It's really irritating that the lead female keep on being portrayed as angelic and all. would be nice if she'd get batshit on revenge on the girl who made her a slave just because she was jealous. she was fierce at first when her father was missing but then so soft and weak and polite against her enemies it's tiring and cliche to watch. oh ji ho looks like he'd rather be sleeping at home in all scenes lol, and there's hardly any chemistry between them. I also don't understand how the lead female can be so ungrateful to the guy who loved her eun ki or whatever. that guy did everything for her and I was so surprised since it's not common in saeguk dramas to have that loyalty from the supposedly nobleman that is meant to be the 2nd actor unless they also show some episodes when they were young and how the relationship was built. but the guy sticked to loving her til his death and like he said all he wanted was love her. she on the other hand was so arrogant, and irritating. acting all soft, falling for moo myung who caused his dad's death but can't seem to forgive eun ki for just being the son of the evil guy despite him sacrificing everything. who the hell would catch and hold onto a sword just to protect your lover's father come onnnn. I don't know who is the actor that played eun ki, neither do I find him extra special or whatever but between him and moo myung, he's obviously the more reasonable option. It made me wonder if their love was like moon chae won & park shi hoo's in princess man, would it be so easy to just forget that kind of love over a grudge since the grudge is kind of similar - parents grudge. the lead female let that love go too easily it's frustrating to watch. it would be more fun to watch if she's not all goody goody in revenge tbh. like when jang ok jung went batshit, that's more fun to watch.

ikemen Oct 25 2016 10:18 am Its so painful from the beginning... I have no word to say cuz Im so deep in fear of the first 3 eps. Its nightmare, if you are put in her place, think and feel. I grew from nervous to frighten that In Yeob could be rape any time if Moo Myeong still act cold. I wish I could be there, to at least share the fear with her and protect her with my life. Its not the love, its sympathy. Im so deep in the story already... Jung Yoo Mi, I will never for get this actress!

I ike the ending, it's not bad, the way romance between In-Yeob and Moo-Myeong develops slowly. The one thing i really wish is the life of Sa-Wol! I was really sad for her death :(

Migthy Thor Apr 09 2016 5:40 am This drama could have been great if they made a lot of action scenes specially with Oh Ji-Ho who is very good in action stunts just as his remarkable performance in "The Slave Hunter" also, it would have been exciting if they chose an actor for the characters of Kim Eun-Gi and Chi-Bok that will match the vitality and energy of Oh Ji-Ho. The story would have been interesting if only they made the pace faster instead of dragging every scenes as if it just wanted to stretch the drama. And continuous repetition of dialogues and scenario is too much . . . It's a pity the scriptwriter and director failed to make this drama more lively and interesting. anyways ... CONGRATULATIONS !!!

GG Mar 14 2016 9:20 pm this is unlike other historical drama. There are less hiding of secret and motive between characters. I love the ending. I think it has to be that way since in the relationship between yeob and moo myung is more matutal and they protect each other for survival so understand that there are less sences of two of them madly in love. But of cuz I wish to see them together marry and have a life that they both deserve. Ending had me in tears as it was sa wol birthday and both in yeob and moo myung found each other after all these trouble they have been endured together. I like that in yeob didn't settle so fast with moo myung and took a mourning time for eun ki. In yeob and moo myung is the best, they have all the understanding, unconditional love and they help each other out in their worst time. omg I just wish they produce for season 2.

Watching this because of Yoo-mi~ Her acting is superb, and her character is not weak. l'm glad. l guess the reasons why In-yeob pushed Eun-ki were: 1. his father is the real enemy 2. she didn't want Eun-ki to choose between his father or her 3. she didn't want Eun-ki to lower himself to be the same level because a slave is as low as livestock/object, she didn't want his future to be ruined by her (run away, then what?)

Yes, In-yeob only loved Eun-ki, that's why it hurt her so much that she had to give up on him, and tried to ignore him. For Moo-myung, l could see and sense that he cares a lot for In-yeob and l don't know why he fell in love with her. Her sense of justice? Her stubborn and toughness? Her fragile side? l know he always tried to safe her as he loves her, but this guy is somewhat unpredictable. He didn't even notice that he already fell in love with ln-yeob! He had fall in love before, why wouldn't he notice?? l prefer Eun-ki's love which is pure and unconditional.

Every time l watch ancient drama (korean/chinese/japan) l wonder: which is more horrible.... ancient times or modern times?

lpa Dec 24 2015 4:29 am I love historical dramas and have watched many. This was a good drama but in the end it felt a little blah. I liked the actors and they did a good job but there seemed to be little suspense or climax in the end. No exciting conclusion. I would give this 8.7 or 8.9 out of 10.

Feel sad for the tragic love story and I don't like In Yeob being with Moo Myeong .. it's like why would u have a feeling for him? for me Moo Myeong didn't do anythimg based on his own will, he just looked like a puppet that couldn't do anything on his own (he did what others told him to do, he just took an advantage as a prince) he didn't deserve to get In Yeob's heart.. he was using his position n power (chances from the king) to save In Yeob and he was just being selfish...

I thought why In Yeob thanked Moo Myeong for she's being the noble back. IT WAS ALL BCOZ EUN KI NOT MOO MYEONG.. Who did ask King Taejo to write a letter about the secret task for InYeob's father?!?! IT WAS EUNKI MANN PLZZZ!!

I'm pretty sure INYEOB LOVED EUNKI MUCH MORE than she did to MooMyeong... She gave some space in her heart for MooMyeong NOT BCOZ SHE LOVE HIM.. It was bcoz she pity him and felt like she owe him...

The sypnopsis is really good and the acting for the actor are good as well, it's not all about romance, and what i like in this drama is when moo myong act so cool but secretly have a feeling for in yub and help her in many times, i think it's more romantic than all those cheesy romantic words also i'm speechless with kim eun ki's love. Till the end of his life, he still sacrifice for in yub! What an exellent drama. I totally recommend this.

LiLa Jun 09 2015 3:17 pm This drama is such a great drama. The story-line is really good written. No dull episode. It has all reasonable moments. The drama doesn't suit those who seek for romance. I really like how they portrait the two protagonists : not only kind, but also smart and quick witted. I myself prefer girl who smart rather than cute to be the lead. I almost stop watching ep 2 because it seems a bit lack and quite boring at the beginning but after ep 3, the story is growing up well. For the ending, I don't find it bad. It's a good ending. Some viewers find it bad for the co-lead to die, but for greater picture, his death is the best punishment for all bad characters and good turnover point for the two leads. Anw, this drama is highly recommended. I would give 8.3/10.

cain May 28 2015 3:08 pm after watching tvn cable tv dramas which are generally so dragged and less mystery/plot ,I feared watching this one of jtbc but I was so wrong..this is one really engrossing piece..it feels like watching a long big movie..and what not many have mentioned about is the music..this drama without a single song(ie song with lyrics) feels so beautiful than the crap lyrics and music in so many dramas now..the music is ultra melodious and feels like a movie..and the acting of Jung yoo mi is really commendable..both the serious and light situations,the tragic and sweet moments .she has handled with finesse with her very natural acting..and the camaraderie with her personal maid, who also has acted very well, is really heart warming..also Lee shi a though she is a new actress has played her role brilliantly..but there are also some flaws with the drama..like there is not much scope for character development of the casts,Oh ji ho acting could have been better..although the maids share the same plight, there is not much unity between them,also the house is a really troubled onewith all the three men in the house having affairs with their maids turning their wives into merciless women and themselves behaving like just and fair people..also the other maid Dan ji character could have been written better..she shown very selfish and although she knows her lover is married,she still continues her relationship with him with also an intention being to lift her status..and later she starts behaving as if she is the greatest victim in the whole thing..i think both of them were very ruthless towards the masters wife.. I don't think the ending is a bad one since every characters state is clearly explained and the meeting of the the leads at the end shows hope for a new future of theirs..all through the drama I really felt for In yub who one by one loses everything her fame, family reputation, her nobile class and the 3 most meaningful people in her life..her father,maid and lover..overall I will rate this drama as 8.5/10

The romance between In Yub and Moo Myong was not believable AT ALL. She would have looked better staying true to Eun Ki. Well now I couldn't bring myself to finish the last episode. What a waste.

There is no romance no sweet moments till the end between the two leads. But still, a wonderful drama, almost a masterpiece! Maybe you should make Part two for us to be satisfied. I will be waiting!

I'm not a general fan of sageuk with the exception of last year's The King's Daughter which I loved but Maids is outstanding! I fell in love with the story when I read the synopsis and the episodes do not disappoint. On the contrary. They're wonderful to watch! Each episode is so unpredictable I find myself counting the days for the English subtitles to come out after watching the episodes raw and then count the days for the other episodes to come out, so I count the days of the week to watch Maids. The drama is pretty addictive! It's interesting how in the middle of so many high profile dramas with popular names there is one, Maids, whose cast was fairly unknown to me, airing on cable, that delivers so much more in terms of writing, acting, narrative and photography than them and yet for many it's over the radar and there's hardly any buzz around it. Despite different genres and story, Maids is the Bride of the Century of 2015, surprising, captivating, memorizing and absolutely outstanding. Let's just hope for two things: one, a happy ending, and two that there might be another drama as wonderful as this, again this year!

Now i have to wait till next fri. and sat for episodes 11 and 12, oh well. Bu I don't mind watching the past episodes again and again so I can watch my favorite scene's because that's how good this drama is. All I can say is kook In - Yeob is a strong young woman, she's a survivor of abuse, torture even death when she became a maid that's why i really admire her character so much as well as all the actors who played their role so well. "Maids" "Fighting"!!!!!!!

I hope it continues strong like this because I heard there was an accident on the set so I hope everyone is ok and the dramal turns out well from here on out. Everything is awesome; directing, pace, actors and actresses are all excellent. Can't and don't want to miss a moment. I swear every scene/moment is something significant. The storyline is not as cliche and I often cant tell what's coming next. If you're contemplating whether to watch, STOP.....and START watching :)

Filming, character development, costumes, story line, quality of acting of all the actors -- are all excellent and award winning. There are some good dramas to watch currently (KMHM, HJM, Rosy Lovers, Punch, Spy, Heart to Heart) but this one shot up to my NUMBER ONE for 2015.

lovelyjen Feb 15 2015 10:16 am i have not been hooked to a korean sageuk since ages this one is precious i love the way characters are being developed in this one i love the detailing the scriptwriter is doing with each situation and scenario well done all jokes are intelligent and wittly fitted in !!! i cant praise it enough lovely drama and i am amazed how well everyone is acting!!

pledge Feb 14 2015 2:11 pm is it 20 or 24 ep drama .......well if it keeps up the current pace of storytelling i wouldnt mind if it got extended also. it has a very unique plot quite pleasant surprise this drama has been to me!!!been a long time that a historical drama with a good story was aired in korea

quirky Feb 13 2015 9:07 am i am so loving this drama i have recently been fast forwarding these dramas on air ........neither was i expecting much frm this one but i was totally surprised how it captured my attention for the first time i agree with all the comments since its true i guess we all have similar taste in sageuks/dramas...........the other fantasy sageuk on air right now on mbc is such a trash that it made me think twice before i started this one but i am glad i did!!!!!! i wished that dramas like these would get subbed earlier but its only a wish!!!!

Please do not let this drama pass you by, it is a very interesting story line that will keep you at the edge of your seat. M Feb 12 2015 7:03 am I agree with all the positive comments here :). Honestly this drama did not catch my attention the first time. Then I got to read the all the comments in here, that's when I decided to give it a try and it didn't fail me :). I was surprised this drama is not being broadcast in one of the major stations in Korea. The plot is great and the actors and amazing. No fancy (popular actors or idols) names in the cast but these actors can REALLY act. Now I'm looking on the next episodes :)

samantha Feb 11 2015 3:54 am very glad to see such a beautiful drama.its refreshing to see how everyone is praising the story and plot and not pinning for some hot actor oppa or actress unni. not all good projects are well recognized but this one is gettin all the recognition it deserves.... story of the drama gained momentum from the word go!! i agree with both maddymappo and ophius here that the synopsis is very poorly written. i was tryin out another sageuk from mbc but oh boy the plot was so immaturely dealt way too many loop holes worse than teenage dramas the scene continuity the story telling in this one is butter smooth. people please watch it its really something worth a try!!!!!

I love this saguek. It is the first one I have seen in a very long time (here in the USA) that has some real depths and serious attitude. Most of the stories have been cheesey romances and fantasy junk. Looking forward to the next episodes. So sad this wonderful show started with a tragedy.

Then here comes maid from jtbc.... So far I really like it a noble went down from being rich to servant and falls in love with a hot servant... Hehehe so bad what happens to the tragedy not a good start. I'm liking it so far too bad I have to wait for 2nd ep.... Keep it up!!!!
