Plot

Set during the Joseon Dynasty, "Chuno" revolves around the world of slave hunters (known as "Chuno Ggun") and slaves (known as "Nobi"). The slaves were sometimes born into the system of servitude and other times became slaves as a punishment for a crime. In the drama series "Chuno," a slave hunter (Jang Hyuk) attempts to track down one such runaway slave (Oh Ji-Ho). The runaway slave became a nobi after being falsely accused of a crime he did not commit. While the slave hunter tracks down the runaway slave, he also seeks out the woman he loves (Lee Da-Hae).

Elvera May 12 2023 3:14 am No boy toys here just real men better looking than the other. What a pleasure to watch these guys in action. I love Korean historical dramas and although I was not a big fan of action in the past the Korean genre of this sort has got me hooked. On a need to know basis, there's nothing like this in the USA now or before. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the Koreans really know their stuff when it comes to the entertainment industry.

Maureen Mar 25 2023 2:42 pm Loved this drama series. My favorite characters were Song Taeha and Seolhwa. I thought the love between Taeha and Hyewon was more convincing than the one between the young Daegil and Un Nyun. Seolhwa seemed to me to be playing the part of a "stereotyped teenager." However, I found her interaction with Daegil endearing. I watched this show many times mainly because of the love between Taeha and Hyewon but as I revisit cerain episodes, I also saw a bond forming between Daegil and Seolhwa. Their temperament was perfectly matched. I thought he was at his best when he was around her in the earlier episodes ( he was also at his best in the latter episodes with Taeha). He listened to her and there were actually a couple of times when he did look at her. She followed him no matter what even though at times it was heartbreaking, especially when she told him she was falling for him. To me anyway, she seemed to be trying to heal his wound and she seemed to be trying to keep him from feeling abandoned. As Daegil clearly saw in the end, she really did love him. That scene always make me cry. Speaking of end, not thrill with the ending. Would have like to know if Taeha recovered from his injuries. After all the Monk said that he was headed for great things and Daegil sacrificed himself for him to accomplish these things. Rather than assume, would have like to see a dramatized account of slave chasing being banned and the prince finally coming out of exile with Taeha's leadership. If he and Hyewon reunite and had their little "Taewon" and were celebrating, praying or whatever before the show closed with Daegil "setting" off firework. Ironically, the only two people who were a couple in the end was Hwang Cheolwoong and his wife. Makes me wonder if someone was daydreaming! "Aigoo". If there was just an episode 25 or something to explain it all away.

I agree with previous comments, I have mixed emotions with the ending, but overall, I'm glad I watched the series. I don't have any negative remarks of any of the actors and actresses. If there's any negative comments, it's probably due to the material they were given.

Cici Nov 27 2022 4:30 pm Update: Finally finished this kdrama series. It is very addicting, at least for me but still because of the male leads, nit only because they were gorgeously sexy but the talent of each was extreme. Female lead grew on me a little bit more but she still didn't really do anything very worthy, not hating on the lovely actress ( actor) , I'm sure she played well what was given her. Now moving on to the second younger female lead , the 17 year old prostitute (forced into it, she didn't choose to be) who ran away from that life, wide eyed , curious and cute as a deer but only followed the slave chasers around and gorged on her love of food the Entire series was a real confusion of a character to me. I just never could figure out why she was in the movie or series at all, I mean at all other than to add cuteness. Anyway, Hated, hated hated the ending and wish there were several better endings elsewhere to this movie that I could see and purge in my memory instead. Guess that's the thing about addictions, they often end in tragedies.

Cici Oct 09 2022 2:12 pm Female lead ruined this kdrama for me. She seemed totally useless, never really did anything and not enough to look at just gliding around like a ghost all of the time. I saw no need for two brilliant men to be so captivated over such a dull female character. Now don't get mW wrong I love Kdramas and have been addicted for years so I truly enjoy good beautiful, interesting female leads, which I found much more, btw in all of the other females in this drama. I watched it and became interested mainly for the three incredible slave hunters. Now those three very handsome, powerful men were each incredible, intoxicating on camera in every way.. Jang Hyuk is outstanding and I can never look away for a second when he is on screen. However my favorite hough I have to say was Wangson, he snatched my attention early on in the series, he's truly the ladies man alright, he's gorgeous but so funny and talented as he is able to switch emotions at the drop of a hat from serious, to very funny, to sexy sweet, whatever you need. A drama well worth watching if you can get past the pretty but boring female lead.

Her beauty is stunning, up there with Seo Yea-Ji (It's Okay to Not Be Okay) and Koh Joon-Hee (She Was Pretty). I've been watching this drama since. Beauty of human beings, we all think differently, have different tastes, different opinions.

Kikkoman Apr 26 2022 1:58 am could've been good if it wasn't for the main female lead. Lee Da-Hae almost ruined the show. she had so much make up on that I couldn't even tell if she was slave or noble lady. and don't get me started on unnecessary blur censorships... Thankfully, the rest of the cast are really good. Jang Hyuk is fantastic here. I would've appreciated this show a lot more if it wasn't for the distracting female lead who tries to look pretty on screen all the time.

Eonya/Hyewon is Daegil's girl and she even admitted that in Tae Ha's face but the arrogant prick was so selfish... I simply hate Song Tae Ha he took advantage of the girls weakness when she was travelling/escaping alone... What a an a-hole hahaha

I cant believe how good of a drama this is , so much that is has jumped into my Top 10 Historical kdramas. coincidentally this drama came out in 2010 when I was a little kid enjoying the World cup (My most memorable year) and I didnt even Know about kdramas back then, But here I am in 2021 enjoying such an ELITE drama. Daebak !!!!!!!

I wont lie to you ; this is one of the most complete kdramas I have ever seen and everything about this drama was 10/10. Its just one of those kdramas you clap for after it finishes with a big smile in your face , thinking to yourself this is defenitly 10 out of 10 . The cast , plot , pacing of the drama, Ost , choreography of the fighting scenes, Realisticity of the time period and the Makeup were all a solid 10 out of 10 ; No doubt.

Even though this drama was back in 2010 , the makeup for the whole cast especially Lee Da Hee and Min Ji A (Both such beautiful actresses) were ahead of its time. Major props for that as it made the drama that more enjoyable; and I must add that Oh Ji Ho was very handsome in this drama ( the beard and the long hair really suited him and made him look a real tough man).

With all that being said my favourite and most enjoyable part of this drama was the really dark humour this drama was full of(especially the trio of slave hunters were involved in ). This drama would have been cancelled by the first episode in todays world, with all the snowflakes trying to cancell everything and anything that they dont agree with ; looooool. Its really a blessing that this show was not cancelled and I got to watch it.

Aishurya Apr 08 2021 1:51 am Now it's difficult to appreciate any other Kdrama...In this drama not only main leads but also the other characters have done a great job.. Even, the killing machine HCW was killing many.. I never wanted him to die in this series... And irrespective of how rude he was to wards his wife for not setting any expectations.. I expected some place in his heart for his wife and which indeed happened... Wangsona and General choi trio made this series lively... I missed them in second half.. I also couldn't accept that they can be killed ... And thankfully they were not.. the trio with Jump's were giving a warm family feeling... I found Epo bok is one of the strongest supporting character which was well carried out by the actor.. the love story with Cho bok is sweet also the Cho bok character well acted... So overall, apart from leads each and every character did a great job which made every scene of the series enjoyable... Thank you Chuno team... We need more Kdrama of this standard..

Excellent performance by the entire cast, especially the male leads Jang Hyuk and Oh Ji-Ho, and most especially Jang Hyuk. Jang Hyuk even got nominated for the International Emmy Awards for his performance in this TV series. I hope they make more K-dramas of this caliber.

Somebody Nov 20 2020 8:13 am I have watched like 6 or 7 episodes of it so far but somehow It's giving me empress ki vibe because, in empress ki the woman is madly in love with the main lead but then betrays him and goes and sleep with another guy and here as well the woman is in love with the main guy and might as well betray him I don't know if this is gonna be the same or not. (I hope not but if this is the same then I'm done with these types of kdramas) in empress ki it's just killing and betrayal from first episode to last.

I have a huge crush on Jang Hyuk who's the main lead but as per CLOY, it's a sad drama.... I think I need to move on to CLOY first before starting this one... Hahaha

Marguerite May 10 2018 3:25 pm I was so moved and thrilled by this show that I have started to learn Korean and bi am fascinated by Korea and its history. After the tragic ending I kept crying for days. I felt as if I had lost someone I cared for deeply. Jang Hyuk gives an incredible performance. There is nothing comparable in Western télévision to this type of narrative, which offers action, history, humor and builds such longing in the viewer. The music choices were unusual and clever. Everything works from the direction, camera work, script, acting and of course the backdrop of beautiful Korea. Thank you for bringing something so brilliant to our American screens.

The show looks amazing, from the colorful landscapes to the pretty costumes, to the perfect makeup job on the women. Great direction, with some breathtaking shots within the nature. There are some great comic relief moments as well.

The problem, as always, is the shitty writing. 1/3rd of the way in and you have no idea where this is going. There is no main purpose, the story doesn't build to anything, you don't care what happens to any of these characters. In spite of having no big picture, every element is bland and predictable. During none of these fight scenes is there ever a chance an important character will die or even get meaningfully hurt, even at 1 versus 20. Contrast this with early-seasons game of thrones, where anybody can die at any time and for any reason. This is what makes a show engaging. But these writers don't have the shadow of a testicle and the story suffers from it.

Not awful, but there's no way i can put up with 24 hours of this.

I would LOVE to see a drama with Kim Ha-Eun and Jang Hyuk. Beautiful chemistry! And how about the Reluctant Mama's Boy turned into a killing machine for his corrupt father-in-law? Audio! The only time I've cried for a villain.

I love that Kdrama doesnt conform to our western needs of Happily ever after, the plots, the endings are much more realistic. A sad ending doesn't constitute a bad ending people. In real life the good guy doesn't always win and sometimes there's more than 1 good guy

Overall, I enjoyed this series a lot but that finale was a tad strange. I have no issues with main characters dying and Daegil's death makes perfect sense but it is strange how in the end we do not know just what happened to the actual couple. Did Taeha die? They seem to imply it but it is not exactly clear. They had enough time to include a useless scene with the tavern ladies, it would have been better used in telling us just what exactly happened.

I wish Eop-bok's sub-plot had been a story of its own. His plight as a slave and his relationship with the best female in the entire cast deserved a whole drama instead of playing second fiddle to the usual love triangle.

Why did daegil have to die alone with seolhwa??! He should have been with Wangson & Choi during his last moments!!! I'm so frustrated that the director shoot Daegil's last moments without the people who he loves or care about like the trio Wangson & Choi or his lover Eunnyeon.. Having daegil died at the end was already sad and painful enough but to see him dying in a scene like that??? It's so heartbreaking, I'll neve receiver from this ending.

Every episode has its own spicie which consist of suspense, action, romance, humor and every other possible factor a good drama would have. I must give a round of applause to both Jang Hyuk and Oh Ji Ho. They portrayed their roles better than anyone could and made their characters so captivating to watch. However, I'm so disappointed in Lee Da Hee's character. Her presence is weak in the show and I feel like her character lacks what a heroin should have. She faints so often over the most trivial things and thst just annoy me. She always need Oh Ji Ho to rescue her but when he tries to get close to her she push him away. I don't like how she has 2 of the most amazing guys falling for her but she keeps pushing and pulling them because she can't make up her mind. I wish she had a more stronger character.

I didn't expect how beautiful it is..I enjoy everything in this drama... the scenery, soundtrack/music, story, etc.. it won't be perfect without those excellent cast especially Jang Hyuk and Oh Ji Ho. and of course the director and writer and mixer of music..however, Lee Da Hee who is beautiful indeed.. should not wear make while in the wilderness.

Nice story plot SUPERB acting heartwarming OSTs MY OH JI HO = EXCELLENT TV SERIES.. I've read most of the reviews regarding this film and undeniably almost the credits goes for jang hyuk w/c he deserves it in any way or another.. But hey! My OH JI HO did a great job as well..he may look stiff @ some scenes but that may be required by the director.. And in fairness to MY OJH, those eyes of him were very expressive.. Plus he is soooooooo much CHARMING. and he shares a GREAT CHEMISTRY with Lee Da Hae.. I just love this guy soooo much!!

wisa Jan 27 2014 9:44 pm I love this drama, absolutely one of my best Korean historical dramas. I love and hate how it ended but if I know Korean historicals they always end with someone dying. The fact that the male lead didn't get the girl I didn't despise that as much. They were past lovers 10 years they been apart, even though he still stayed true to her even to the very end. un hyun was true to him as well until tae ha came, I liked that she stayed true to one man. Plus oh ji ho and lee da hae had amazing chemistry. Jang Hyuk what a great actors, I truly loved all the cast members. I Don't regret watching

Quan Oct 06 2013 6:30 am I'd still say NO NO NO to violence but in this series, notwithstanding, I see balance restored, demons vanquished, hope nurtured. My topmost favorite is the slave Eop Bok. He's as subdued as the foundation of a huge edifice, having learned to keep to himself that he used to hunt tigers. Of the females my favorites are the slave Cho Bok Yi (she projects an aura of hopefulness despite her dismal status and she neither looks down on slaves nor envy the nobles --- she has an inner joy that shines through her ragged appearance, especially that she's in love) & the silly entertainer/prostitute Seolhwa (her beauty lies in her "simpleness" and I'm happy that she falls in love with Dae Gil). The fast action-music is super! I'm infatuated with it as much as I am with the hot male leads. On a serious note, this series has been enlightening for me, on the way "slaves" and "nobles" see themselves and the world around them, on the distance of the "gap" between them so much so that it's difficult for somebody of one class to connect with or to get across to the other. The friendship of the 3 buddies Daegil, Choi & Wangson is really admirable. I'm very glad I decided to watch this one not so much because I was entertained but because I learned much about human beings. My many thanks to all who worked hard in this drama. If you're a fan of Mr. Jang Hyuk then I heartily recommend Tree with Deep Roots.

Meagan Sep 28 2013 7:45 am The "Chuno" finale was phenomenal. I do not understand why more people do not comprehend the significance to it, and the necessity of it ending the way that it did. It was so much deeper and beautiful than our own "Western world" predisposed and predictable endings. Perhaps our culture is shying further and further away from stories that have actual depth (such as in novels), and expecting to take everything at face value. This was the best writing and the best acting I have ever witnessed. This is perhaps my favorite series of all time. A sad ending does not equal a bad ending. I cannot emphasize that enough.

Some say he was a doomed hero, couldn't be fixed, but isn't that what InNyeon should be like too, considering that she really loved him ? Shouldn't she have died with him ? Or at least tried to make a last sacrifice for him, after all that happened to him because of her. I mean he lost everything he had since the day he confessed his love to his father, and still spent the next ten years searching for her. It's just not fair, she should've made a last chance sacrifice to redeem herself, if she really loved him. But I don't think she did, she just needed someone to rely on and when she found that in TaeHa she threw away everything that she had with DaeGil and ran off. I didn't like it, it's messed up.

niidji Feb 24 2013 2:53 am Five Star Plus. Hollywood puts out few movies as well done. I was captivated. I do not understand Korean but watched this was on Netflix and I read every word while enjoying the spectacular scenery, architecture and special attention given to daily living of the time period. The multiple problems brought out by the class systems and slavery; the division/denial/separation of even lovers was very pronounced from start to finish. The wrongs of super wealthy and the starving poor. Yes the poor far outnuber the wealthy and could rise around the world as the slaves did. Even the young Seol-hwa who was forced by life into prostitution. Sad but mankind allows all of this to exist yet today around the world. One word for each episode, casting, etc - captivating.

I don't know why but I get really annoyed seeing the lovey dovey scenes with Unnyeon and Taeha and I don't really know what to feel when I see the flashback scenes to Unnyeon and Daegil. And one other thing with the music... why does Unnyeon and Daegil's love song always play when Unnyeon and Taeha are together or are about to separate but decide to not separate? There's so much of that... it makes me really confused and irritated, since Unnyeon and Daegil are supposed to be the lead couple, but they haven't even seen each other yet, even until ep 11. So what makes Jang Hyuk and Lee Da Hae such a great couple that they even won best couple? I guess I would have to keep watching to find out. But, in the mean time, I just really wanted to let out my frustrations.

He was important to the slave rebellion and is not even listed. Also, if I look for this drama under the year 2010, it is not there! Only if I look for the alphabetized list under S (The Slave Hunters). It's as if it did not exist for 2010. Please correct these issues.

Even several days after finishing it, I would think of it and cry - in PUBLIC! It has everything you could want in a drama: a compelling story, tremendous acting, action, suspense, beautiful cinematography, and MOST important, a musical score that stays with you forever. Chuno is branded into my soul as the slaves were branded in this drama. You will not regret it.

It felt VERY rushed, things that needed to happened, DIDN'T (all you know who've watched know what I'm talking about) and......AHHHHHHH!!!!!! I'm so frustrated!!!!!!! Don't get me wrong, I LOVED THE SERIES, it had it all, ACTION, COMEDY, ROMANCE, DRAMA, HEADACHES, but the ending.....THE ENDING........WOW. NO CLOSURE FOR ME WHATSOEVER. Such a letdown.

The Whole Story is Cool and entertaining, but the ending lacks the kick. i hope there are sequel to this drama.

Hopefully I will be able to visit Korea one day. I've picked up several Korean words such 'kerdei' (I guess this one meaning - yes ok). 'Namaseo' (maybe 'hello'), 'sarang' (love?). Ok bye-bye guys.
