Set in the future, when the planet suffers from a lack of water and food caused by desertification. Han Yun-Jae (Gong Yoo) is a soldier for the space agency. He is selected for a team, including Song Ji-An (Bae Doo-Na), to travel to the moon. Their mission is to retrieve a mysterious sample from an abandoned research station.

Notes

Drama series is based on 2014 short film "The Sea of Tranquility" ("Koyoui Bada"). Choi Hang-Yong directed the short film and the Netflix drama series.
Filming is scheduled to start August, 2020 in South Korea.
First acting role for Lee Joon since he was discharged from the South Korean military on December 19, 2019.

I had high hopes for this series with so many familiar cast members, especially the villain and henchman from Beyond Evil, but also Bae Doo-Na and Kim Sun-Young. Unfortunately it’s already proving to be an annoying melodrama.

For instance, a scene like this…

We’re running out of oxygen, we need to approach on the downward slope side to save time, but first, let’s all stand around and talk for awhile.

It’s frustrating to see the constant reminders about a lack of time, yet so many unnecessary conversations that need to be done standing still.

They’ve lost their ship, and will request a rescue ship, but seem to have forgotten that they can only stay in the station for 1 hour, although the reason was not given, it’s presumably because of radiation.

Park your brain if you’re going to watch this one, there are lots of holes in the logic.

Ava Feb 27 2022 3:11 am Funny, how come Doctor Who 'Waters of Mars' isn't ever mentionned when talking about Silent Sea ? The plot of Silent Sea deviates but you can't fail to see the similitudes between the two. The station, the virus ... the first dead man discovered at the entrance wearing an orange and blue jumpsuit ... It's been 10 years since I saw this episode of Doctor Who so I can't list them all but I just can't shake the feeling of déjà vu.

Korean Sci-Fi style is evolving - with a sudden subtle twist at the end - twists if you catch it - makes you think. Maybe most people just prefer mindless entertainment - that's ok too for passing time - but i prefer a subtle dig.

The Silent Sea - a dying earth - the only hope is water found on the moon - but it is not water as we know it. It is basically undrinkable. So - they start cloning humans trying to find a biological solution so humans can drink it. Of course the experiments are done on the moon where earthly human moral ethics can't interfere. In the process - the final scene - instead of boot foot prints on the moon dust - they see human foot prints. They have cloned a human who did not need water or air. So you have to wonder - in the end as the earth dies - is this the only way the human race can survive a dead planet?

I can't remember the drama i watched and they talked about the coming out of corona virus(before the coming out of covid-19) where companies were fighting for vaccines. Lo and behold, there came the corona(and still going on) I just hope this will not happen too, the global scarcity of water, and people will be classified LOL!!!

cherry Feb 04 2022 9:48 pm I enjoyed The Silent Sea despite their slow paced storyline and a lil goofy CGI. Another K-Netflix series i want for second season after Sweet Home. It was good imo, i love the thrills. Great acting, powerful cast. Overall 7.5/10.

Got so many questions Jan 23 2022 1:36 am Just finished watching this series and I can say I quite like it. For me, the cinematography, CGI, and directing are good. Love all the equipment and technology shown in this drama. - My comment below might be giving SPOILER - Aside from the scientific or logic that people question, I have these questions and opinion after finishing the drama: I wonder if the "human" Luna is Director Choi's daughter (referring to the photo shown after she's done calling Captain Han). Did she die? Was she sick? If I'm not mistaken, the Luna they found in Balhae is the cloning. I wonder that might be the other reason why Director Choi is so desperate in getting the lunar water (other than political reason). At the end Director Choi was also wondering if they might survive (she might want Luna to survive and be brought to earth as well).

Why Lieut Ryu has slightly different symptoms than others who are infected by the water? He did not see a starfish (and I also wonder what that's supposed to mean) and he did not spew water like others did. What makes him so different than the others?

How did Dr. Song's sister died? Was she also infected by the water? Or get killed by Luna?

The ending got me thinking that Captain Han might not die (if he's infected by the water, Luna can save her just like she saved Dr. Song). So maybe the 3 of them got back to earth, or 4 of them (including Luna).

I really thought Lee Gisu (the co-captain) would die because of the water since he ridiculed those who died (by saying at least these people had as many water as they wanted in eps 1).

I also don't quite understand about the storage room where they found the water. Is it possible for all the water to still be intact and good after 5 years? Probably that fact doesn't matter lol.

Overall, I'll give this drama 8/10 for an interesting plot (despite all inaccuracy scientifically/logically) and the thrill that can make you stay seated the whole time. And the casts!! If you have watched a lot of Korean movies/dramas, you must have seen them a lot of times.

Has anybody wondered why nobody is eating in this series? Koreans love to eat (usually)....

kokos Jan 14 2022 11:14 pm @Marathon24 This is BS. Every Sci-fi must establish their universe and their rules. These can be anything they desire. But! Everything thereafter must abide to these rules. Otherwise it creates a logical problem. For ex: If we establish that faster than light travel is possible, and it takes 1 film month to travel to a certain destination, it cant happen in episode 10 to instantly teleport there.

I think, there's still a lot of unanswer questions about luna water HHHH. neways, since this is sci-Fiction genre, i don't really care about the "make sense" situations or sowhatever since fiction is not literally correct hihi. Not recommended Jan 09 2022 10:28 am I strictly do not recommend this drama to anyone. You can watch it you don't care about the time in your hand. The storyline line was brilliant, but everything was very draggy. Imagine making a short film into an 8 episode drama series. The screenplay stretch is way too obvious and gets boring. But the thrill and suspense will keep you to the end. Many questions are left on the loose. It gives you dissatisfied feel in the end. It would've shone as a 4 episode story I guess. The plot was very creative. The cast was good. But the sense of blandness is there. You know, when you add 1 glass of water to a cup of milk and try drinking it. Just doesn't feel good. People watch dramas for entertainment sake and If it can't give you that level of entertainment then it doesn't deserve to be praised. Some blunt viewers are pulling down the people giving negative comments. They must have poor entertainment standards.

Marathon24 Jan 09 2022 5:55 am I don't care if there are many negative reviews about the story or complains about the sci-fi logic. For me, sci-fi doesn't have to always be logical since it's fiction anyway, not a documantary or science lecture, LOL.

I love this drama, it is so good and worth watching. If I don't have anything else to do, I would probably finish it in one sitting because it's so suspensefull, and thrilling. Gong Yoo and Bae Donna are superb, I always love their works. All other actors are great too, and Chief Gong is so charismatic. A bit sad at the end, but still a great drama. Just give it a try.

Marc2427 Jan 08 2022 6:49 pm A great cast wasted on terrible writing and direction. Anybody familiar with science fiction regarding space stuff will literally vomit the science is so completely off. The plot is slow moving, not much happens, nothing makes sense, and most of the characters could be titled "Guy who dies #3" The leads do the best they can with the miserable script. The best way to watch this is to view the trailer, imagine what happens, and never getting around to seeing it - whatever you imagine will be better.

Steffanie Jan 07 2022 9:50 pm Logically or scientifically speaking, a lot of things do not add up or make sense. Drama wise, it's exciting and enticing. It's binge-watch-worthy. The casting was well picked and the acting was really good. I enjoyed it.

The things that bothered me the most during the entire drama was how were they able to build a very huge, elaborate, high tech, building on the moon, that could take months up to years depending on supply transportation to the location.

Also how come the gravity pull was like as if they are on Earth or any other planet? Like when the space shuttle fell off the cliff, when they were walking from the crash site and, and when the captain fell when he was fixing the electricity outside the building.

I don’t agree that Luna could have survived outside. She either would have floated off into space due to less gravity, died due to no oxygen, or either be fried or frozen depending whether she was in shade or sun. Luna would require too many adaptations to survive and I don’t think that in the actual ending it is clear that she survives and is picked up by the shuttle.

Some scenes at the beginning feels so eerie, i can’t help but waiting for something to jump out ? Tho there are some things that doesn’t seem logical (isn’t the lab crew died 5 years ago? How come their bodies not rotting? Or bodies not rotting in outer space?) but i’ll take it.

Can’t wait for season 2! Please netflix, finish what u started damn it. I don’t want another Arthdal Chronicles and Vagabond ?

But what happened in the last episode ? So many things in the plot stop making sense. And they go way to far in the scientific absurdities.... Gong Yoo and Doona Bae were great ! Love their acting, but the series is not good. And it was the last episode that made me completely disappointed.

An ok series Dec 27 2021 11:03 pm I had great expectation for this series since they have such a stellar cast. Great concept, great cast, great acting however the writer failed to follow scientific logics. The editing somehow seems choppy. If you are going to do a sci-fi concept, at least do some diligent research and make it scientifically sound. This would have been executed better if this was made as a movie instead of a series with slow burn illogical flow. If you put aside the scientific logics, it is an okay show to watch.

The Silent Sea was highly anticipated and did NOT fail to deliver, but from Writer-nim Park Eun-Kyo and Director Choi Hang-Yong I didn't expect anything less. Being the screenwriter of The Sea of Tranquility. Director Choi was able to guide all involved in telling the longer version of his short film beautifully.

I recommend placing this under a Rewatch list for many years to come.

There is nothing new under the sun, yet using the concept of water was welcomed as our planet is facing severe repercussions from humans' negligence. It reminded me that water is life.

Kudos to the cast, director, and writer.
