Plot

Hong Mu-Hyeok (Lee Beom-Soo) is the 18th generation descendant of Hong Kil-dong (famous Robin Hood like character). By day, Hong Mu-Hyeok works as a high school music teacher, but by night works as a Hong Kil-dong like thief. His rival is Lee Jeong-Min (Kim Soo-Ro), a cold blooded businessman known to bribe politicians for personal gains.

Notes

Hong Kil-dong is a well known fictional character from the Joseon Dynasty era novel "Tale of Hong Kildong" by Heo Gyun.
The movie "The Descendants of Hong Gil-dong" takes the fictional character of Hong Kil-dong and supposes he is a real person whose descendant is Mu-hyeok Hong (played by Lee Beom-Su).

ceteris paribus Aug 18 2020 2:44 am Regarding that statement, there is no actual proof that Heo Gyun is the writer of Tale of Hong Kildong. Before Heo Gyun died he released a collected book of information on his works prior to death. The story about Hong Gildong was not included.

It was his student Yi-Sik who mentioned Heo Gyun together with Hong Gildong without even knowing the contents of that work that did not exist during that time. 300 years later Kim Tae-Joon, a famous scholar, falsely spread this rumor.

Korean schools on one hand rely on information of such scholars and on the other hand have many reasons for not digging into the real origins as they want to keep their wishful thinking that Hong Gildong was published during a much older time from a much more intellectual person that is Heo Gyun.

If you want to know more about the myths around Hong Gildong, I highly recommend you to check out the papers by Prof. Dr. Minsoo Kang or just listen to his podcast on YouTube.
