During the Japanese colonial era, roughly 400 Korean people, who were forced onto Battleship Island to mine for coal, attempt to escape.

Lee Kang-Ok (Hwang Jung-Min) is a bandmaster at Kyungsung Hotel. He decides to go to Japan to protect his daughter, but he is drafted into Battleship Island by force, being deceived by talk to send him to Japan. On Battleship Island, he does anything to protect his daughter.

Choi Chil-Sung (So Ji-Sub) is the top fighter in Kyungsung (old name of “Seoul”). He makes troubles on Battleship Island, but he has a warm heart.

Park Moo-Young (Song Joong-Ki) belongs to the Korean Independence group. He sneaks onto Battleship Island to rescue a member of the independence group.

hua Dec 10 2021 5:53 pm Watching this reminds me of the history of my nation being colonized by Japan, and the Hiroshima Nagasaki bombing made my people see an opportunity for independence. May the heroes who died in war and fought for freedom find peace in heaven.

I love the story, and the cast. makes us feel how precious freedom is. must watch!!

heyho Mar 28 2021 6:04 pm This Movie Is Amazing!!! Didn't expect to enjoyed this much. Colonization and war story is always heartbreaking :( but they manage to slip some comedy here and there. Excellent actor line up!! I really want to praise everyone, they absolutely did great portrayed each character. The story sometimes kinda confusing bcs im not familiar with korea history and culture at that time, but as time goes by i'm getting the hang of it. I'm just starting to explore more kmovie this year and damn Hwang Jungmin always exceed my expectation!! Watched some Song Joongki's drama, but here his acting really convince me that he is indeed a great actor. Special mention to the ending song, the lyrics is simple yet so deep i'm literally crying :"(

AJ Aug 19 2018 1:30 pm The three lead actors are among South Korea's most talented and loved, and the story of what Japan did to Korea is true (enslavement, rape, and mass murder, just as they inflicted on Nanking, China), a story that many Americans don't know about our ally. Though there are some plot gaps and sequencing gaffes creating a cut and paste effect in a few scenes, the film is well worth watching because of its themes, both historic and dramatic, and because of the twists, intrigues, betrayals, and heroism of this Korean story set in the face of the horrors of war and occupation. The film opens and closes in black and white, except at the end a spectral bit of horrifying color followed by the anguished face of the child. It follows a thrilling yet heartbreaking action sequence and closes with an elegiac triumph soaked in grief. This is, after all, a war story. There is a reason why Asians, especially the Koreans, have captured the world's attention while Hollywood continues to slide. They have tremendous talent, imagination, brilliance, and expertise along with a thousand-year history of culture, ideas, and experience. And because they are that good.

Adalinelove Dec 17 2017 1:05 am Waited forever to watch this and I finally saw it. SONG JONG KI! It pains me to see him injured but he was so heroic!! So Ji Sub always amazing. I felt like the movie was a little rush therefore it didn't felt like the plot line run smoothly but for the most part you are able to understand the meaning of the movie. It was a good movie over all. They did really well trying to make everything look realistic. It makes me sad to watch war movie because the way people are treated is so sad to watch. I especially hate it when they kidnap women and sell them for prostitution, having them get raped. I just can't watch that but the movie is good.

A lot of Indian viewers are willing to watch this movie. Hope it gets released here too. If theatrically, I'll go for it once again because such epics are better enjoyed on big screens!

Song Joong Ki only appears after the first quarter of the film was shown. I was like... "where's he?!" ?? But the anticipation was over when he appears... as we all know that he's the lead actor of this movie... the "savior". ?

Hwang Jung Min (Ode to My Father, You Are My Sunshine) as expected... never fails to amaze me with his acting, humor, drama... superb! ??

Kim Soo Ahn (Train to Busan kid) is the best child actress for me. ??

Superb acting from So Ji-sub, Song Joong-ki & Hwang Jung-min. I can watch this movie a dozen times and I will cry every time for sadness of plot, but joy for greatness of hard work put into this production.
