Incheon, South Korea in 1993, Doo-Seok (Sung Dong-Il) works as a debt collector. He looks intimidating, but he actually has a warm heart. One day, he goes to see Myung-Ja (Kim Yunjin) to collect debt. Unexpectedly, Myung-Ja gives her young young daughter Seung-Yi (Park So-Yi) as collateral. Myung-Ja is an illegal immigrant and she is deported from South Korea. Suddenly, Doo-Seok becomes Seung-Yi’s guardian.

Now, Seung-Yi (Ha Ji-Won) is all grown up.

AB Nov 03 2021 6:53 pm This was one of the most emotional films I have ever seen. It was a seemingly neverending rollercoaster of emotions, a train ride from one station of emotion to another, with everything from heart-crushing despair to heart-bursting joy and all the emotions in between, in a natural flow. It is predictable at times, however this is not bad but, rather, it confirms the flow and when it goes "off course" in a way that is unpredictable and almost makes you confused, it all wraps together again and completes itself.

Everybody's acting was the highest degree. Sung Dong-Il and Park So-Yi were the standout emotional drivers, the connection slowly developing between their characters crafted by true chemistry. Kim Hee-Won portrayed a character who can be said in the "past time" exists primarily for comic relief, while in the "current time" exists for literal physical car driving and emotional support... this is an interesting factor because, on the surface level, his character is only a "sidekick" but the entire story would not be possible without him. From the very beginning, he pushes forward the "current time".

Ha Ji-Won and Park So-Yi do not look at all like each other, so at first in the back-and-forth timeline of this film it seems strange for them to portray the same character at different ages. However, when Hong Seung-Hee appears as the transitional stage, this fits.

My only criticism is the ending, which I believe could have been done better in terms of plot. This will be a spoiler, though minimal in detail, so do not read if you did not watch the film yet! The "click" is obvious immediately... but, the two together somehow did not think of it for ten years? I understand this is for the building of emotional investment, to build tension in the plot, and for "audience rewarding" for the emotional investment, which is not bad in any way and is very common in drama films. Simply, it shows "backwards character development" in a way: it almost makes it open for debate whether much of the depicted plot was discarded in the gap of ten years not depicted. But, this is a very cynical interpretation and of course, the intention is to maximise the impact of the very ending.

This is a film that everybody should watch. It is at the same time both a heart-wrenching drama film and a heart-pumping feel-good film, which is rare.

Mike Jul 28 2021 10:09 am I'm relieved that almost everyone, not just me, including men, cried so much with this beautiful movie. I cried so much throughout this film, such a touching film. The child actor was tremendous, incredible to show such raw emotions at that age, she was amazing. I loved this movie, incredibly emotional with a wonderful ending. Why this isn't on America's Oscars, I don't understand, much more emotional and impactful than Parasite or Minari. Absolutely wonderful movie.

The husband runoff with another woman left the poor mother and little daughter to clear the debt from the loan shark. Like kimchi, this movie was blend perfectly. Only those with stone heart will not shed tears. Each character acted very well and I salute little Park So Yi and Sung Dong Il for amazing performance. I think, ahjussi got his karma bcoz he separated the little girl from her mom when she was little. He got his total redemption at the end. Great acting. Kudos!!!

And so the movie goes trough the life of this little girl unfortunate events that made her who she is and wha lies ahead in her search for what the film exposes at the end. This movie is one of those few that has a really well written script structure. Outstanding performances from everybody on the film, truly. One of my favorites.
