Joseon is in a state of disorder due to uprisings and a power struggle surrounding King Lee Hun (Yeo Jin-Goo). To avoid assassination, a clown named Ha Sun (Yeo Jin-Goo) is brought to the palace to take the place of King Lee Hun. Ha Sun looks almost identical to King Lee Hun.

When Ha Sun was a child, his parents died during an epidemic. Ha Sun almost died from starvation around that time, but he was saved by a group of clowns. Ha Sun grew up with the clowns and became one of them. During their performance, Ha Sun would play King Lee Hun due to their similar physical appearance. Now, Ha Sun is nervous that someone in the palace will find out he is not the real king. He falls for beautiful Queen Yoo So-Woon (Lee Se-Young).

CJ Sep 12 2022 1:22 am I watched this drama in November 2021 just to pass the time while I waited for the next episode of another ongoing historical drama I had been watching. I didn't expect much because not a lot of people were talking about it, so I assumed it was because it wasn't that great. But the Netflix summary made it sound intriguing so I thought I'd give it a try. It's been almost a year since then, and I've seen it 6 times already, not counting the times I watched and rewatched all my favorite scenes. I'm obsessed. The character development in this drama is insane, especially that of Haseon and Lee Gyu, the message that anyone can change the world no matter what your status is so powerful. Jingoo is brilliant in his dual role as both the protagonist and the antagonist and now I am a huge fan of his. The score gives you goosebumps. I've been reading the novelization to get a more in depth look at what's going through the characters' minds and I've been translating the whole thing into English as well. I honestly don't think there is anyone who loves this drama more than I do.

Brillian story, acting, cinematography, and not a typical music score for sageuk series (really great classic score). All the actors and production crew did a good job. Yeo Jin Goo played 2 roles and both gave strong characters. And Lee Se Young really fits with the Queen/King's wife role (watched her in Red Sleeves first before this). And Kim Sang Kyung's deep emotion to both kings vs his ambition for his nation shows really well. Love the bow scene between the king and the chief of secretary! Definitely a must watch series! Really recommended

Everything was just Perfect: the plot, the storyline, the music, emotional, suspense, amazing chemistry between the leads, really superb acting of all the actors. I really wish i could see another historical drama like this. A great performance of Kim Sang Kyung, really great acting!! But Yeo Jin Goo, wowww, what an excellent and great actor at such a young age. Such a powerful and perfect performance, the dual acting, his bright smile, charismatic, great looks, he has the whole package. He deserves an award for such acting!! A huge fan from Belgium ?? - really highly recommend to watch this drama, you will not regret it for a second!

First time watching this actor yeo Jin goo and I must say his actings were perfect I love the queen wiseness too, love the ost songs especially ost part 8. The ending is a happy one though, I don't like how the clown was shot and no story of how he survived

This is definitely Yeo Jin Goo's best performance to date. He gives it his all playing two different characters who look exactly alike. The supporting cast were all perfect too. Loved the OST. There's nothing not to like about The Crowned Clown. Don't miss it! Even if you think you aren't a fan of historical dramas this one will change your mind. It's an Essential K-Drama.

His team is stupidly stupid who always falls into traps. The cast is great but please no awards for stories that don’t make sense.

KST Nov 21 2021 9:41 am I just finished watching this series. It was really amazing. Up to now this is the best performance of Yeo jin goo which I have seen from a drama. His acting is superb.His dual acting as the cruel prince and innocent clown was really impressive. I think this is his best drama which out of all the dramas of him. Lee se young and yeo jin goo has a nice chemistry here. The other actors also have done a great job in this drama. Apart from acting the plot story line was really interesting. But too many characters died during the course of the play. Anyway the ending was good for a certain extent yet I expected something more than this from the ending.Anyway I recommend this drama to all who are interested in watching historical series and I also recommend this series to all who are interested in watching romance drama because this drama is so lovely and romantic one. Hope you too will enjoy watching this. This is a good drama. No regrests!!!

MaryCherie Oct 19 2021 9:14 pm I love Yeo Jin-goo. He was so good in this series. I love this drama that I still could get tensed each episode regardless how many times I've seen it. Although the love story part and lines seems too unbelievably romantic esp in those era, you'd think the king and queen actors have real feelings for each other. Not a kind of story wherein as a viewer you also want to kill the antagonists but the story was able to show that they were also hurt that's why they did what they have to do, esp the queen dowager. Such a great actress. I admire the loyalty of Officer Jang too.

I do not understand the Korean language. But, after watching the great acting, sometimes I did not have to read the subtitle to understand what the actors were expressing. I love, love, love the movie. I will likely watch it again. Absolutely thrilling, loving, treacherous, magnificent story.

Nikkie Sep 19 2021 11:14 pm My favorite historical drama so far (I’ve only watched 3 tho). The main leads acting (can’t remember the actors name) is some of the best I’ve ever seen. The way he can do two very different characters almost seemlessly in the same show is amazing. The story was pretty intense too even tho political stuff confuses me. I loved the queen, the chief secretary, and the royal guards characters. I even felt for the evil queen a bit because of what happened to her family (still despised her tho). Overall great show 8.4/10

Aug 13 2021 4:54 pm Second time watching it , love Korean historical dramas , of course my first praise goes to my all time favorite excellent actor Jang Hyuk the great as the best dying king , yes Yeo Jin goo was amazing in both parts and to those who complain about his age , sorry , not justified there have been many young rulers even teenagers elevated as kings in history, and Jin goo did an excellent job acting las a king who is young , however I also agree that , yes , the queen acts older, who is only 4 years older. Jang Gwang, , sang kyung , and the rest of kings men were great , Kwan hae hyo is totally scary as a pure evil official , over all support actors were great , directing , writing , musical score , were superb , bravo , Love the beautiful costumes too . Job well done .

But the King looks so much younger than the queen. It would be good if the one who plays the King is more mature. Yeo Jin Goo is good in portraying both the evil and kind character, but the evil one doesn't suit him as he is more like an innocent boy.

But the less is a female character Lee See Young who seems so older than a male character. They are so awkward and indirectly uninsplicated.

First, King Lee Hun/Ha Sun played by Yeo Jin Goo has nailed it. He played both characters really well. He deserved to be recognized. Next are, Chief Secretary Lee (really good job!) I love his character. And, Chief Jang, the queen and many more. I will not be able to put in writing how magnificent the drama was, but I will recommend you to watch it. You will definitely will stay all night long to finish the drama the soonest possible time. Enjoy!

At first I thought it was too slow because of masquerade being to straight because it was a movie. But as episodes continue to flow I realized it was fine. I was happy with the death of the real king because I feared he might be back into the palace. I didn’t realize why he was so pathetic in his ruling. All in all it’s nice drama It’s recommended to watch

nimfadelfrado Dec 14 2020 2:06 am Almost perfect, but I hate the main actor, he seems miscast. He is not fit to play as a king -- both the cruel version and the kind one. But I give credit to his acting, again, he is not the suitable actor to play as the king/clown. It would be perfect if the same actor or at least caliber of Lee Byung-Hun is cast as the main character/s. It is more convincing.

In other cast, it is perfect especially on Haksan and the queen, I love them both!

Imagine portraying your role twice at the same time. Daebak.. he was able to convey all the emotions. The flow of the story is always a goosebumps. The king's secretary Lee Kyu also nailed it. I also really liked the role of the queen. Woah.words is not enough to express how amazing it is.. all the casts did a very good job. This drama deserves to be known. Sad to say it's underrated.... Highly recommended...

I fell in love with the Queen Seo Woon character ❤️ Mature, strong, soft spoken, respectful and all the good things. Also, always by the side of the king. This is my first time encounter with such queen character. I'm amazed!

Side characters also did amazing roles too. Cho eunuch, chief secretary Lee, officer Jang, Woon shim and Joo Ho Geol too. It is so heartbreaking that most of them eventually died protecting the king :'(

And, i really appreciate that the writer did not make Haseon the substitute king go crazy over the throne. I love how he stays true to his intention until the end and wiped all the bad guys from the palace. Thank you very much!

In Conclusion, An Amazing Drama Indeed!

Gm May 25 2020 2:27 am absolutely awesome!!! I have watched a lot of historical drama's and this is in my Top 5. The acting with the directing and the storyline brings together this masterpiece. The setting and the crucial but different storylines of all the characters and how one character can influence or change another person's storyline is all but amazing. The romance between the main characters is so important. yeo jin goo is flawless in playing two different characters and as an audience member, I am blown away with the power of his acting. Lee Se Young is amazing: her character depicts a queen that is cold and straightforward and peaceful with herself but some times, with the people she's close to, she acts warm but wise. Every character has a vital role in the story. It's Awesome. I highly recommend you to watch this!!!

I’ll be honest I didn’t like it, quit half way through. I was so excited when I found out that there will be a remake of the kmovie Masquerade. The movie version was brilliant but I was disappointed by the big changes in the drama. For one killing off the king was unacceptable, I know the whole thing with him being a drug addict in the plot but let’s be honest that was just an excuse for the queen to be with the false king. And just want to say they killed off the servant girl way too early as if she was completely unnecessary in the storyline. But anyways, I recommend Masquerade, it’s great.

el Mar 14 2020 8:12 am i don't usually write comments on this website but this is hands down the best historical ive ever seen. every single episode keeps you on your toes and i'm always left speechless after endings. script writing and plots were great, amazing casts and realistic acting (every single cast, even the minor actors had done absolutely amazing job). the OSTs are perfect and it amplifies the emotions and complements each scene. yeo jingoo and lee seyoung has indeed exceeded my expectations. looking forward to their next historical drama!

SLee Oct 11 2019 11:21 am I can't help but to make comparisons between this drama and the Moon Embracing the Sun as both starred YJG. Just too many clichés... Plus lazy scriptwriting with not much thought given to in depth character and storyline development. Plenty of awkward and cringe worthy scenes where I actually pitied the actors who tried so hard to make work. The premise of the series held so much promise, but the execution fell below par unfortunately. I would have thought the clown would grow into a stronger king as he gained experience.

The cast, crew, writer, director really did a great job.

This drama will laugh you hard and will make you cry a bucket. So so so good!

Karen Jun 25 2019 8:38 pm @Kingmuffien: The ratings are not low. 11% is very high for cable which means the people in Korea that can afford cable were watching this drama. It is different than the US in which almost every household has cable. If this drama were on SBS or another free network, it would have gotten 40 to 50% for sure. This is the best historical drama out there IMO.

Dee Apr 28 2019 10:46 am I have watched a lot of sageuks and although there's many good reviews here, I disagree. The drama captured me on the first two episodes then I thought it was quite a waste of time. I think I liked the real king's 'might' more although he was evil. but he had the aura of a king. of course I was also glad his character didn't last long because he was so annoying with his drugged state of mind. Of course the clown king is kind and all but I had wished that he had been more steady and had more king aura if you get what i mean, esp after what happened to his sister. But he was quite the same guy except in occasions. I think that's what turned me off most. He didn't have physical strength so to say, he's just a nice guy. So I find the drama quite boring and I forwarded most of it. I think I've seen better sageuks to be honest but the cast did their best and to each their own opinion.

Most sageuks are much longer than this one but this one deserved 20 episodes at least. Been watching Yeo Jin Goo since he was a little boy actor in 2005's Sad Movie and he made me cry in that film so I knew his career would go into the stratosphere and I was proven correct.

The ending is bitter sweet that makes this drama memorable and one of the best period dramas I've watched. br39 Mar 04 2019 6:23 pm I thought that the golden age of great Korean historical dramas was behind us, but the "Crowned Clown" does honor to this tradition. It uses many of the familiar ingredients of historical dramas and tells us a new story extremely well.

The final episode of a drama series (of any genre) usually tell us a lot about the overall quality of the team that produced the entire drama. How well do the many threads of the story come to their end and unravel? Here the final episode ends each strand of the long story in a manner consistent with the entire flow of the drama and leaves me with a clean and calm feeling. A major strand of the entire drama is woven around the deepening relationship between Ha-Sun who becomes a real king and dignified queen Yoo So-won who has a great sense of duty and personal modesty. So we do not mind the last minute fairy tale closing of the drama in the golden landscape... "and they lived happily ever after."

Congratulations and most sincere thanks to the entire production team that work so well together to give a flawless drama: the director; the two very skilled screen writers who created a story full of twists and turns far superior to the movie "Masquerade" that inspired the "Crowned Clown"; the casting of highly regarded actors in every role. These actors were truly outstanding in giving life to the entire plot. The cinematography was often powerful and inspiring. The music was also very good.

Why do I like a good Korean historical drama? Because it reminds me of the deep roots of human qualities that have shaped Korea. What is a good ruler? What is a good person? Why is family so fundamental? What is a good country? The past is still alive if you look and listen carefully.

There is conflict, actions, betrayal, romance, love for friends and family, nationalism and a lot more but everything is well incorporated and well blended. There may be just a little of everything but one gets satisfied after watching it because of the actors' performances, the setting, the costumes, the lighting, the dialogs (I watch the subbed version) are all in place and help a lot in setting the mood.

The confrontations between the king and sec lee are electrifying and emotional at the same. They set the pace. They are a natural and as the story goes by, they have begun to live their roles have worn them like their second skin. One gets the impression that they may be, siblings, if not father and son.

Romance on historical dramas, for me, is just cherry on top of the cake. In here, it is comes with the flow, it is natural, just right and blends well in the story.

I recommend this to my friends. Hope this gets to be shown on local channels in my country.

Thank you producers and actors for this wonder drama. I truly appreciate it

This dram has a very intelligent, fast-moving screen play where the struggle between good and evil takes constant twist and turns at every level. There are many layers in this struggle: internally for each individual, within the palace and also high and low across the country.

Because the casting and the choice of actors was initially exceptionally good, we now see the positive dynamics between excellent actors and good screenwriting (and directing) progress at every episode.

Everyone acts, changes and grows according to his/her character.

Ha Sun is becoming a deeper and wiser risk-taking leader in the difficult and dark role of a king, which he could not even imagine and never sought during his humble days among the group of street clowns who adopted him when he was an orphan,

Queen Yoo So-Won struggles to keep her dignity and maintain her upright character while carrying out her royal duties in spite of devastating and irreversible personal blows. Episode 14 had truly gorgeous and luminous moments about the deep changes forced upon her by her fateful relationship with Ha Sun.

Royal Secretary Lee Kyu works through endless court intrigues to keep alive his youthful dreams of a better country. When he is exhausted, he dreams back to his simpler days and his shared dreams with now head kisaeng Woon-Sim. His strongest opponent remains highly skilled former Prime Minister Shin Chi-Soo who acts ruthlessly according to his own ambitions and different personal values.

The fiery and fierce Queen Mother is driven by the deep emotional wound of the murder of her young son as much as her personal lust for power. To to get her revenge and achieve even more power she manipulates shallow and overconfident Prince Jin-Pyong who is greedy for power for its own sake.

Against a tapestry of dark or depressing deeds that are balanced by warm and smiling moments, our interest is sustained by the hope for better days. The basic of a good historical drama are all there: great acting, beautiful costumes. The great sense of nature that is so much part of Korean tradition comes across with superb photography.

So far it's just so good I'm being left speechless each episode. It just gets better with every episode and the acting is flawless! There's no bad acting. Yeo Jingoo really shows how much of a good actor he is in this drama! As expected, a great actor can play anyone, even if it means playing two characters that are actually the opposite of each other. He pulls off that feat perfectly. Kim Sangkyung's acting is also immensely good that it gives me goosebumps. I sincerely hope the drama stays this good till the very end.

I do not think is up to the double character, luckily it seems that the madman is dead, i think he does not have the beauty of other actors or the skill of Yoo Ah In. Disappointing the other actors, too stressful plot. I do not think I will continue it.

I love every detail of this drama, especially salute to the director of the photography and the music scoring. It’s just a twice a week drama but I feel like watching a blockbuster movie. tim Feb 02 2019 12:38 am oh so even though this drama is based on the movie but it is tearing into a lightly different direction, instead of having the real king return and the fake one exile, here we have the real king died in ep8, but I think it is a wise choice to let him die since he is beyond saving (addiction, delusional, mentally unstable...) he is just on his way to the destruction of himself and the hold country, he has big dreams but with his personality he won't go far. Look like the identity of the fake king will be question for the next few episodes, good thing that le kyun stabbed him to create a scar since to check whether he is the real king or not the only way is to check that scar (no dna test in the old day). This is the turning point of the drama, can't wait for next episode.

I want the clown to remain as the king but never thought that the real will be killed by his loyal "servant"... I love this drama so much more so because of Yeo Jin Goo. I really admire hi so much since I watched him In Moon Embracing the Sun. Love Lee Se-Young too. I really like her in The Gentlemen of Wolgyesu.. Good acting for everybody..

The director is excellent, the two screenwriters are also doing a great job in developing a credible story with complex and shifting political tensions and very different human beings. It was not obvious at the beginning, but the arc of the entire story is working out well. In fact this storytelling is better than in 'masquerade'.

The acting is also of high quality and as a spectator I feel I am "in a safe pair of hands". Yeo Jin-Goo is successful in his difficult task of playing two different characters at the same. Not doubt thanks to the good script, a good director and excellent fellow actors.

I have developed great liking for Lee Se-Yong as Queen Yoo: she shines in every scene. Her ability to convey deep dignity, elegance and grace as well as a convincing inner warmth in the role of the queen is a beauty. As an actress, Lee Se-Yong's natural presence on the screen is a great gift. It is also a endless wonder how the traditional Korean dress brings out special qualities out of a Korean woman. And here the dresses are simply gorgeous.

The photography is excellent and fits the scenes well too. At times it is new and original. In episode 8, the outdoor scene between King Lee Hun and Chief Royal Secretary Lee Kyu facing the infinite horizon over the ocean is beautiful as a symbol of Korea's future. The aerial photo taken from very high with the King barely visible as a white dot and Secretary Lee as another (grey) dot on the beach near the water adds a powerful symbol: two barely visible individuals dreaming of a future for Korea as great as the ocean. Indoors scenes are also very well staged and photographed.

The music is also well suited to each episode. The background motive for the mutual attraction between Ha Sun and Queen Yoo suits Queen Yoo's character and the acting of Lee Se-Young so well. It is a very famous classical piece. It is Liebesleid by Kreisler?

I am looking forward to the next episodes.

With the 8th episode we are reaching a major turning point, but we cannot tell what will happen.

The rest of the cast is also stellar -- there are no weak links. The story is captivating, the directing is meticulous, and the music is exquisite.

I've been longing an amazing saguek (they don't make 'em like they used to anymore). Finally, my wish has been granted. I'm not sure why the ratings aren't higher, because so far, this is a top quality production.
