Ji-Hoon (Lee Seo-Jin) has a cynical personality due to his family background. Even though he comes from a rich family, his mother had an affair with a married man and they had Ji-Hoon. From a young age, he became separated from his mother and began to live with his father's family. One day, he learns that his mother has a liver disease and she doesn't have much time left to live. Her only hope is to get a liver transplant. Ji-Hoon becomes desperate. At that time, he meets Hye-Soo (Uee) and her daughter Eun-Sung (Shin Rin-Ah).

Hye-Soo has lived alone with her daughter Eun-Sung after her husband's death. She is constantly hounded by loan sharks due to her late husband's debt. Hye-Soo begins to work at the restaurant run by Ji-Hoon. She learns that she has a brain tumor and she needs money for her daughter after she passes away. Hye-Soo overhears from Ji-Hoon that he is looking for a liver donor for his mother. To make it happen legally, Ji-Hoon plans to marry the donor. Hye-Soo insists to Ji-Hoon that she wants to be the donor. Ji-Hoon, unaware of Hye-Soo's brain tumor, accepts her offer and they prepare a marriage contract.

glen Dec 30 2021 12:12 pm I have only watched a couple of episodes but I am bewildered by the fact that liver donors don't need to match the patient and you somehow have to be a relative for a transplant to be allowed????? What????? This is a complete nonsense and it is holding me back from wanting to continue with the series. That, plus the horribly brought up cheeky disobedient child that speaks to adults in an extremely rude way and disobeys her mother when she feels like it. I thought Koreans were brought up to respect their elders. I also thought it ludicrous how the heroine lost the brat twice and how the hero could even contemplate taking on that horrible child.

Animosity Jun 21 2021 5:18 am I saw this drama for the first time now. Wanted to watch something with Lee Seo Jin and this one was recommended the most. To be honest, I have mixed feelings about watching it. Bingewatched it in one weekend and this is something I hardly ever do. It was amazing, very well-done, realistic, beautiful and touching. But I don't think I was ready for it, it was too much for me. During the last episode I cried non-stop (not that I didn't in other episodes) and after it I couldn't stop crying for hours. So sad, too sad, I still can't get over it. I want to erase it from my head but I can't. And to think that happens to so many people in the world , breaks my heart.

I then came across Marriage contract and man oh man!! the Korean people can act!!! and the kids act so well!!! This movie is such a very heartbreaking, my heart was so touched with how Ji-hoon has fight for his love to Hye-Soo. I demand for Season 2. Really love the movie. The movie also teaches me to be positive in life no matter what the circumstances are.

And Shin Rin-Ah, two words...... so adorable. Shes a natural I even forgot that she was acting most of the times. Overall, I cant believe Id never heard of this drama before. This is the first time I came across these actors, and I am thankful I discovered this nostalgic, classic melodrama released in 2016! Gish, how could I miss it. Everything in Marriage Contract is perfect. This is my # 1 K Drama of all time. The acting, dialogue, carefully crafted scenes (that handshake and kiss is Wow!), OST, wardrobe, casting are all perfect. LSJ and Uee gave their electrifying best here! This drama is a classic gem.

Lee Seo Jin is great in the part and I didn’t think the pairing with Uee would work, but it was perfect for the tragic path they had to tread. I think the fact that they are an unlikely match made it all the stronger, they became just right together as he gave up everything for her and she finally fell for him. Great script writing and direction. Uee’s best work for sure and LeeSeo Jin is brilliant in whatever he does.

It was so realistic and the little girl was very young to act this well. I know there will never be a season 2 as her brain tumour is unrecoverable, but we can always dream on and hope a miracle cure can be found and that’s why the writer didn’t have her dying at the end.

Such intense emotions displayed with tremendous ease. I am a fan of Lee Seo Jin and Uee and that little Eung Seong. I really wish there was a second season and that Uee got completely cured of the illness. Can't recommend enough. Such a lovely watch. Kudos to the team.

Paula Jul 05 2020 7:58 am I’d forgotten what a gem this drama is. Lee seo Jin is just the best actor and has the role to a tee. Uee is at her best in this, it suits her better than her other roles such as My Husband Me Oh - terrible. It is heart breaking but realistic, all support roles fantastic, the Mother, brother, Manager, little girl, the doctor, all great and well directed.

It can take being rewatched, it’s a real winner and not run of the mill. I just love it and cried forever, but the ending is realistic. Well done everyone. This stands out among K dramas, I’ll never forget it.

The kid gives the series a good atmosphere. Its been a while since i watch a good drama. Definitely deserve a watch list.

Judy Jul 28 2019 6:28 am This is the best Korean Drama that I have seen. The plot is deep, complex and romantic, of course tragically sad too. The male lead is superb, he should do a lot more such dramas, Lee seo-Jin acts with conviction and real feeling. U-ee is great too, I saw her in Mr Oh, but she is better in Marriage Contract, as she is naturally fragile so is convincing as a dying girl. All the support actors were wonderfully well cast and the director did an amazing job. It gripped me from start to tragic end.

It’s good to see a romantic K drama with a plot of some substance, some are trivial. This was worth 5 stars, excellent in every way. Well done, especially to the leads and central supports. Lee seo-jin is mesmerising.

Aki Jul 23 2019 12:15 am I'm really not into melodrama because it finds me boring and I would usually stop after a few episodes, but this one is so good, I love the story, I didn't feel any boring part, and every sad scene makes me emotional that I could feel the character emotion.

I recommend this drama and advice to keep the tissue box besides you.

Kudos to the actors and actress,you did a great job.

I was so addicted of the whole dialogue of the seemingly realistically story of the bonded love of a son and mother, loyalty of childhood friends supporting each thru thick and thin. The combination of heavy drama, witty and humorous anecdotes, brilliantly performed by each character. The child actress Eun Soong was excellent, Hye Sue and Ji hun captivated was heart. I can not stop watching it over and over again. I can not tell when my love of this film seized. I would like to give the highest rating, even add more and more

It was so good but also heartbreaking, I’m usually not a big fan of melodramas but this was so fast paced than they usually are....the end also had me bawling my eyes out thinking “I pray to never experience this type of situation with anyone I love/family”.

It kinda gave me the feeling I had when I first watched “Its Okay that’s Love” years back and that is really rare.

It was also my first time seeing the main actor/actress in a drama and definitely now a fan of both of them. The whole team behind this did a great job. Definitely one of my favourite drama.

kimmy Apr 09 2019 5:41 am wow. i am lost for words to say about this drama. the story was beautiful and heartbreaking. i dont cry easily and watched this to challenge myself and the tears poured out on their own uncontrollably. its a real tearjerker. and UEE left me astonished. UEE acted this role so perfectly and brought her character to life and im a big fan of her now. whenever she cried i was torn deep inside and cried with her, even when she smiled it was both painful and sweet to watch. i cant express it to the fullest, UEE WOW. and to rest of the other actors too, they all did an amazing job. did i saya how i loved Uee, cant stop thinking about how great she acted in this drama. loved her

but I just have a question regarding the premise. The whole story started on the fact that Lee needs an organ donor within the family for his mum, and that Uee is willing to marry him then donate for the money, right?

What I don't get is, can't non-family donors simply designate to whom they want to donate the liver to? I mean in real life they encourage looking for donors within blood-related family members because it's more likely to be a match. But from here, even if they get married, Uee and the mother still isn't related by family, so why the insistence on the donor being a family-member?? Why does Uee have to marry Lee to donate?

Jaidee Mar 08 2019 5:37 pm I just watched this drama and still I can’t get over with it. It poured me a lot of tears and it’s so heartbreaking. The story was quit realistic because not everyone survive brain cancer. The chemistry between Uee and Lee Seon Jin was really amazing. They are a perfect match. They played their role realistically and Iwas amazed with their acting skills. Eunsang also is a good actress and seems to have a bright future in acting. I can so much relate with the story for I am also a sick person who needs strength to live longer. It’s not really easy to live with a certain illness ang seeing your family suffer emotionally, physically and financially. But This drama taught me a lot. The reality about life,a love that is true and unconditional, and the stretch to overcome trials. It didn’t stop me from crying and wanting more fantastic episodes. I believed somehow that there are stories like this to some couple. I just hope they have positive attitude to keep on fighting and stay happy despite of everything. Thanks for the whole cast, the writer and the director,producers who made a wonderful story to watch. I am indeed happy and satisfied. Two thumbs up ?? for this drama.

I started it thinking it might have some resemblance to "this is my first life" but it doesn't. It's a unique storyline all in it's own. I loved the wine cellar scene in ep 7 as Hye Soo covers Han ji hoons eyes, makes them look couply and like they're in love. Stick to the very end, it's a very good drama. 10/10 rating!!!!

Mariposa Aug 25 2018 3:51 pm I skipped about 5 episodes towards the end. Tbh, this drama is very captivating and the cast were amazing. But the storyline is just really sad. Like there was no heartwarming moment to me, even the kisses looks sad to me. The movie was very depressing. I kept on crying while watching each episodes till Ep10 when I could take it anymore and skipped to the final episode. Pls and pls, if you are not in for a drama where you will cry for majority of it ...don't watch.

MqDz Apr 23 2018 2:03 am I am somewhere around the beginning of the story and I am totally confused. How is it that koreans have had no problem with such a topic like selling your organs! I mean this is beyond riddiculous. Ok, you can have harsh in life but this.... cliche script is not only revolting but also dangerous. Maybe its some kind of cultural difference, where sth like this in my country.... is beyond anything bad can happen. Like I am lack of words. There is no justification for one, this whole proposal as main drama story telling two, changes in characters if there is any. The main leads even if they try to convey sth, I have huge problem whit their moral attitude. And its not funny, nor entertaining nor sad, its just WRONG on so many levels. And she has cancer, and daughter, and dues, and guess what she is a match with his mother...i mean come on.... I can't take it seriously. Fantasy level outrage.

Arihant Mar 05 2018 1:22 am Utterly captivating drama..Could be the best work ever of Uee,Lee Seo Jin and others.Superb direction,writing and music too...Each character,even smaller characters, seem to be well cast-a shout out to Lee Hyun Geol ,so good as the Head Chef(you don't want to mess with him!)

I don't normally prefer melodrama about terminal death but something made me start this,as had heard many praises for this drama and found all the praise justified.The show tugs at all your heartstrings and does not let you go,even once..

Little things,relationships are beautifully handled.The chemistry between the "fake" family is superb.The show also has great life messages about filial piety,taking care of sick family members and a general positive outlook to life.

A must watch!

Kenzo Mar 28 2017 1:50 pm This is one weird drama in the sense that everything in this drama is Korean stereotype: sickness, poor-rich cinderellaism, jealous sibling, live triangle and so on. Even the main leads are not the best eye candies, at least to me.

But this is a VERY GOOD drama. Much better than the popular Descendants of the Sun. The acting is superb and so beliavable. Especially kudos to the female lead. You have to watch it to see it, since I do not like to give out spoilers.

Very recommended, even for people like me who usually not into this type of drama.

Kenzo Mar 27 2017 11:21 pm To me, this is a weird drama. Every recipe in this drama is Korean mediocre stereotypes: sickness, rich-poor cinderellaism, love triangle and so on. Plus the main leads, at least to me, are not the best Korean eye candies, like Rain, Song Hye Kyo and the rest. No funny scenes, no heart beating scenes, no ober romantic scenes. Everything seems so flat. The only flashy thing in this drama maybe the BMW i8.

But weirdly, this is one very good drama. No dragging scene, almost all scenes are substantial to the story. Hooked from the first minute.

I will say this is far better than the popular DoTS. Wonder why this drama is as popular. Maybe the only thing lacking in this drama is a killer OST. Good journey through this drama and very recommended.

I liked the story. This is only my opinion - there was absolutely no on screen chemistry between the two main actors. The story line for them was great, but for me, these two people are a complete mismatch. I found it very hard to care if they were together or not. Win some lose some. It is a good story!

Little girl is a natural. Look for her career to take off. Supporting cast, cinematography and direction outstanding. Beautiful, beautiful soundtrack. Seo Jin never disappoints. Korean dramas far surpass American dramas. Favorite scene if I had to pick only one: dancing scene in episode 16. Her feet on top of his- that tells us so very much- such deep intimacy and tenderness. Give us more like this please!

Sadly ep 16 is the ending. I cried so hard. For me, Uee's best drama is this one. Her acting is good and the storyline is good too. I give 5 out of 5 stars.

You cry beg and scream for the unfairness of everything that is going on but you wouldn't want to change a single thing. I love the actors and their realistic way of expressing human behavior. 10/10

raggy May 01 2016 4:37 pm okay.. i hardly comment on here but i felt that everyone should know how AMAZING this drama is. i finished it a few hours ago and it's 2 am in here, but i can't sleep. i just keep replaying it in my head. the acting, the script, the story, the characters and oh god the ROMANCE were all beyond perfection. im a picky watcher and i honestly don't get moved easily by a drama but this one surely did it for me. i know everyone is obsessed about DoTS that they seem to neglect the other good dramas.. (well i still don't get the popularity of dots, i stopped at ep 8/9) anyway, this is a MUST drama. i only have 2 favorite dramas (la dolce vita & heartless city) and this has become the third one. im hooked. im not sure if Lee Seo jin is married/dating... but if he is single, then i wish he and uee would give it a chance. the chemistry between them was so strong i can't help but hope it's real. they seem to match very well.

But her sort of aloof persona in real life actually helped herin this role. I thought she portrayed it very well. Loved the storyline, the lil girl, the supporting cast. I didn't fast forward anything. Great heartfelt story! 4 out of 4 stars!

In High society, yes i feel her eyes are just Blank staring at nothing even if she is talking to another person. Overall this drama is great! Aside from Ji Hoon and Hye Soo who's got a perfect chemistry, i like the character of Eun Sang, she's adorable she made me cry few times, and also The Chef remarkable he's funny. Cast good job all! Drama highly recommended!!

Here in MC, she changed a little, her eyes a little relaxed but not enough and is a little expressive, i have no problem in her crying because we cry in different ways. Overall, this drama is great, i am satisfied! Aside from Hye soo and Ji Hoon (who is very charming with dimples) and their perfect chemistry, i like the characters of Eun Sung and the Chef! That child is so adorable, she made me cry in different situations. This drama is highly recommended!

And I like how they didn't push love triangles too hard and focused on the natural progression of the characters growing and understand each other. You know how some drama's the main gets sick but than their are so many other things like an ex comes back and they leave each other.

Only to realize at the end they love each other. Or murder, mystery thriller and the illness gets pushed to the background and only comes back near the end where one of them is in the hospital and they realize they love each other. That's not realistic.

But this drama showed a lot of the pain and more reality in a situation like that. Which helped see how the characters grew so naturally.

And everyone gets what they deserve good (Mother cured, son got a family who really loves him etc) or bad (LSJ dad now lost everyone because of selfishness and is alone)

The show takes time to pick up and the characters takes some time to grow on you.

It was good but UEE's crying the sound she made was the only distraction and her face and mouth are seems stiff. I really liked her why did she do that to herself.

LSJ and Uee did an outstanding job, everything felt so real -their love, sorrow and passion! their chemistry was DAEBAK, I have never seen any couple with such a chemistry (didn't feel/see the age gap at all)! and we all have to admit that the kiss scene was the best in all the Korean dramas!! it was kind of a REAL KISS, there was so much feels in it! UEE's acting was brilliant, she is an outstanding actress, can't call her an Idol anymore, she 200% actress! The whole cast did a great. I think that Kim So Jin should be in the drama poster instead of Kim Yoo Ri, she had much more scenes. Shin Rin Ah acting was so natural, so talented! I am sure that all the people who wrote negative comment, and said that UEE can't act and commented about the age gap thing are eating their words now. Sorry for my English, anyway there is no words to describe this great drama. If you haven't watched the drama, you should watch it!!

It lures you in with its warmth and the characters feel real, like they're someone you might have known, a family member, a friend, or a neighbor. Even the "villains" were well-written and layered, imo. Overall, a very satisfying watch. Thanks to the whole production team and actors for bringing us this beautiful drama.

I binged watched all 14 episodes, pulled an all nighter, my eyes were soooo swollen and dried up the next day I had to wear my sunglasses all day. It's seldom I get hooked like this to a k-drama. That means this is a well written and directed drama. Like the Cinematography, too. It makes me so happy and appreciative of my family (esp my husband! To have Someone you can trust and hold hands with). Gonna make him watch with me to teach him some smooth moves by Lee Seo Jin. XOXO

A drama worth watching. It's really worth it. It gives you all sorts of feels in each and every episode. Happiness,Sadness,Hurt,Humor,Love,Sweetness and more. And the OST espcially the song To You Again by Jung Dong Ha is amazing.For those who have not watched it or don't really like melodramas, gives this drama a chance. It's not a boring drama, it's a very moving one . And really good chemistry between the actors Lee Seo Jin and Uee. Mr. Dimples..oh Mr. Dimples..You nailed it..thumbs up..for you're really a gooood actor..wooooow....can't wait ...hope for happy ending ..Though I have prepared my bucket for next week's tears.Hope that it'll be tears of happiness kkkkkk..Mr writer don't kill the viewers,too hhhhhh for really my heart can't bear more . ;) (y)

If they paired him with Uee is because they knew things will work out and it will help her in her career. Korea don't go by age difference like other country. I get fond with this dramaa, Eun Sung (Hye Soo's daughter) really play a big thing here. Uee's acting also daebak! I can truly feel how it hard to keep a secret as a secret. Lee Seo Jin charismatic and caring side really shown here. And don't forget the lead couple's chemistry is 10/10 hahahaa♡♡

Which she's managed to maintained her strength and independence up to the point of her illness.. Her daughter is awesomely matured to support her mom.. The unforgettable KISS between Lee and Uee should really honor them an award.. The whole production of Marriage Contract, should be nominated for many awards by the academy.. I am enjoying, can't wait for all the episodes.. Wish I could purchase the series so I can revisit it on my leisure time.. Thank you for a rewarding meaningful drama.. Keep up the good work..

I was just curious how a rather senior actor,Lee Seo Jin, could possibly have any chemistry with a very young actress, Uee. In my mind, you could not have chosen the two most deadpan faces in Kdrama and expect fireworks. So I tried an episode, and then another and now I am avidly watching even raw new releases. It's that compelling. I don't suppose they expected this drama to be such a big hit. But it insidiously creeps on you. So there!

UEE's acting showed exactly how it is to keep an emotion and guarded lest the almost blank stare and being strong. Seo-jin did great too and the little girl is so mature for her age which is really really good. The chemistry is also good. That's how adults in reality. Love it!

I guess Uee's acting is good and Lee Seo Jin's cool persona fits so much with the role. Age gap is not awkward. I think I'm gonna watch this until the end. One of my 7 day worth of wait. I love it! Bad comments seems very offensive and somehow creates too much negativity. To each his own... we're entitled to our very own opinion.

But at the End he is strong enough to do the right thing ^^ I´ve seen this Story in many Dramen, and its the same as in Taiwanese or Chinese Version. And I know that this happens in real. He cheated and made Ji-Hoon's mother believe she was the only woman in his life. Than she finds out she isn't but already is pregnant. Why do people always just treat the mistress badly when it takes two. Also in her case from what I gather with the subs I was watching is that she DID NOT know he was married. She said He told her he only had her. So I think he is mostly at fault and should get all the scorn. She had a child with him at that's not her fault it's his. But in the new episode he said it was to "trap him". So he willingly slept with her and got her pregnant so she could "entrap him" ?! This guy is delusional and sick.

It just sucks his real wife treats the mistress like garbage alone.

Of course you cant make the child stay still forever, not even minutes. And the child needs a little talking to, she's not even apologetic that another man got wet. Second, I dont know how old is Hye Soo now, but I can see she is so immature. Why would she carelessly read the notes given to her about Ji Hoon in the presence of other people? Why would she cook on a table with her child nearby? And she even playfully chased her child around the stove still on. And just hope the PD would pay extra attention to such details because this drama has so much potential.

sonhee Mar 09 2016 11:27 am Uee is my favorite idol turned actress. She's truly amazing at portraying a variety of different characters and she portrays them flawlessly. I'm not at all bothered by the huge age gap because it's makes things realistic. I know people who are married and have been married that are more than ten years apart. So I don't find their age gap to be a huge issue. Especially since a lot of Koreans have these types of age gap between marriage....even though it's frowned upon. Lol. Anyways, I absolutely can't wait for more episodes. Such a great cast especially the child who's acting is better than the Heirs cast put together. Lol....I might have offended some people. Sorry. Everyone has a right to their opinion and can post it here or anywhere. I finished ep 2 and yes the age gap is very obvious and even if people in real life marry much older people, that does not mean that everyone has to except it. With that said, so far Uee is doing a nice job with the character. The little girl has great chemistry with her and they sell the mother daughter roles to me very well. I do have to say though the Lee Seo Jin's acting is leaving little to be desired. I don't know what it is, it just seems to me that this is not the right fit for him.

Not feeling chemistry between the lead which I pretty knew I would not, but I tried to go in it with an open mind. Uee is doing a nice with the character and the mother daughter relationship is believable. Mr Lee is not giving me the feels. He just seems not the right fit for this character. I liked him in Lovers much better. Anyway, the first two episode where pretty slow moving and hopefully things will pick up.

I am a huge UEE fan I love her. But the mouth area on her face I did notice it looks different.

And I do find the kid annoying. She is cute but I don't like that way the child was written. It's that or her acting isn't working when they want to make her spunky. I have seen a lot of child actors act better. And she is stepping into show business where she will grow up where she will get criticism. Even as a child. And that can help her grow because their job is to improve as an actor and make people want to watch them.

But all in all I do like this drama but I read some where it's 16 episodes and others it's 50. If it's 50 I don't think I can watch that much.

Also, for those who think it makes no sense to leave your child with someone you don't even love, I wouldn't talk like that unless you truly understand the hardship of never having enough money to get by everyday. If you're a single mother and you have a huge amount of debt, with constant pressure to pay it back, any mother would be as desperate as she is to support her child any way she can. If you haven't lived with the hardship of money and debt, I wouldn't talk so lightly as if you know what you're talking about. This drama isn't totally realistic in every aspect but it rings true to the certain aspect of how poverty can be really tough. And seriously, age ain't nothing but a number!! Haha, there are some younger people I've met who far exceed there appearance's maturity expectations. And if you can't appreciate that, GTFO! Haha :D

I normally do not have a problem with either the man or woman being older than the co star but when it gets to being old enough to be their parent, then that crosses the line for me. I will pass on this regardless of how good of an actor LSJ is. I was not impressed with Uee in High Society although I think she is cute.

I think she'll nail her character well and that to have Lee Seo Jin as the male lead,i think this drama will surely live up to my expectations.. Marriage Contract fighting!!! People who has doubt of him (age, etc) watch him in Lovers, he was just great with the best chemistry between him and lead actress. It was the first KDrama I saw and made me a kind of fan of KDramas. On my part I rather watch a drama with a talented actor than a drama with a flower-boy who is maybe young enough to be suitable for younger ladies here :-) but has nothing more than a nice face. LSJ is talented, handsome and very charismatic, a real MAN. :-)

I'm excited to see how she will handle the painful parts of this drama and finding the man for her kid, can't wait!!! I love how she always challenges different roles. Hwaiting Uee Unni!!! I also really liked Super Daddy Yul and I see that there are some similarity but hoping it will be a good drama like it. Lee Seo Jin and Uee hmmm...not sure what kind of chemistry they'll show but I guess I'll wait.
