Hisashi Ieji (Takuya Kimura) works for a securities company. 5 years ago, Hisashi Ieji had an accident at the place where he was sent to work. Due to the accident, his recent memories have become blurred. He also doesn't have any feelings for his wife Megumi Ieji (Aya Ueto) or 4-year-old son. To him, its like his wife and son are wearing masks. Hisashi Ieji does have fond memories for his ex-wife and daughter. He divorced his ex-wife 5 years ago. To find out what happened to him for the past 5 years, Hisashi Ieji goes on a trip to find himself and he takes 10 mysterious keys.

Based on manga series "I'm Home" by Kei Ishizaka (published from July, 1997 to December, 1998 in Japanese seinen manga magazine Big Comic Original).
"I'm Home" is the first TV Asahi drama series that Takuya Kimura plays the lead character.

von Mar 03 2022 10:17 pm It's engaging how the protagonist, Hisashi, tries to find out who he was before and fixes whatever wrong he can though it does seem a bit farfetched that the loss of 7ish years' worth of memory could bring about such a huge change in personality (in the intro narration, he says it's 5 years but his divorce from Kaoru was 7 years ago and he didn't remember a thing about it), given he couldn't have been such a different person 7 years ago. It seems more borderline MPD to me. Also, I don't get how he'd remember being a family with Kaoru and Subaru but not his philandering and undermining ways towards Kaoru, unless his memory beyond the last 7 years, even if not gone, are spotty. He seems to be able to retain new memories just fine as well so I'm not too sure if he really needed to keep jotting stuff down on his memo, but I guess they needed it as plot device.

Still, the personality shift isn't too unbelievable either that it's a struggle to suspend disbelief since even though his past self was a selfish person due to ambition, he wasn't truly awful by nature and always had a soft spot for family, even if his selfishness and trust issues made all his kind gestures in the past seem half-assed. Guess when his memories got knocked out of him, so did his ambition and issues and the good sense he's got buried underneath all of that finally got to surface.

Given how fragmented his memories are, I get why this show took a more episodic and intermittent approach in telling its story at first, because as he begins to piece things together the storytelling ceases to be less so as well and in the end, everything comes together. It's done well so this is something I like a lot about this show.

The way a couple of earlier issues got resolved and the behavior of the characters involved in them I can't say made a whole lot of sense to me, though. And while not a flaw, there's a distinct lack of characters driving cars for some reason which I'm guessing is a deliberate choice.

Overall, if you're into human drama with some mystery mixed into it, I'd recommend it. The storytelling concept is clever, even if nothing else is overly groundbreaking. It approaches poignancy many times but never quite lands there though this is probably by design, and not something I feel is bad, given the overarching mystery and/or issues surrounding the show, which in itself doesn't feel forced or overblown.

Yes, it has glaring writing holes, some of which I've pointed out earlier, but it also tackles complicated relationship issues with a decent amount of realism and without devolving into melodrama, which evens things out enough for the audience to suspend their disbelief, something which I've mentioned before. And while it does fall victim to certain overused tropes, it manages to stop short of being downright cheesy. Acting was solid for the most part and entertaining for others (I kind of wish Teruyuki Kagawa's character had more involvement) and the production values are high, though the last is something I've noticed is consistent in all the shows I've seen that has Takuya Kimura as the lead.

Kimura himself does very well in showing duality and mean!Hisashi makes me want to see him explore shadier characters more. He'd definitely be excellent in them. He's got the eyes and the acting chops to pull them off. He'd make a wonderful charismatic villain or morally gray antihero. But then maybe that's the entire reason why there doesn't seem to be many of them. Perhaps they'd be too much for the conventional Japanese palate too used to seeing him as a hero.

Speaking of which, I generally enjoy the stuff Kimura does and found quite a bit of his shows worth rewatching. Of all the stuff I've seen him in, there are only maybe a couple of misses for me so far (due to the storywriting and how the characters were written). While this won't be on my immediate rewatch list like a few others are, I'm fond enough of it to perhaps watch it again when enough time has passed. The fact that it has three JP actors I like (Kagawa, whom again I wish had more screen time, Toshiyuki Nishida and Kimura) is pure bonus. If it had Shinichi Tsutsumi as well, it might have even made it on to my immediate rewatch list. Lol.

The chemistry is great too <3 My only complain is the happy ending feels so short hahaha :') Its okay I can replay the scenes many times lol

It has happy ending too, though I hope we are given more of the happy moments :') That's the thing with J-drama The happy moments feels too short haha XD Anyway this drama is very recommended!! Cherry Sep 24 2020 4:36 am This is one of the best Kimu Taku doramas I've ever seen. At first I was hesitant because some reviewers said that this isn't Kimu Taku's best one. But after watching the first episode it really got me hooked. I don't know, but the stories are so relatable in so many real people's life. And if you're married you'll understand what the story is trying to tell you. Go watch this one. It's heart warming and reminds us how a family should be built. And oh, the ending was so perfect for me. One of the best ending out there.

Mike Bram Jan 19 2016 2:56 pm Kimtaku plays a pretty one dimensional character in this one. Like most of his roles, he's a pro chef and he looks confused and befuddled all the time. More so than usual in this, since he can't see his family's faces.

The first couple episodes were kind of interesting, but it then meandered into a series of "mini stories" that didn't see to really connect with the overall plot, other than a way to make Kimtaku look like a cool, nice guy who's trying his best to make things right with his family and his coworkers. We're reminded routinely that he was a bad father and kind of a jerk before his accident, and I guess that's what the whole story seems to hinge on. 'He was a bad father, but he's going to redeem himself!'

The whole premise is just a little hard to believe and it's hard to feel an emotional connection to Kimtaku because he's just so emotionally flat all the time and confused. I guess to compensate for the acting, the Japanese editors really pour on the tear jerker piano music all the time to try to make scenes dramatic and touching, but it just doesn't work for me. I had to give up on this one half way through, it was putting me to sleep. Sorry guys.

NMS Aug 17 2015 8:53 pm It was an amazing drama i gave it a shot and i ended up watching the whole drama at once. it is a mystery drama you can see in each episode there is a story that you want to know about it , a funny drama , and very emotional.

i really loved the cast especially the male lead he acted the 2 characters very well that i can see the difference ,the scrip is well written , and the director was good to show us the different angles of view when the wife and the son were wearing the mask while they are actually not  .

Collibosher Jun 16 2015 3:25 pm The only problem that I am having with this drama is there is just not enough of Aya Ueto in it. I realise that it is Kimura's show, but the ex-wife and daughter are geting far more screen time than our lead actress. I realise that she is moving along in her pregnancy and is obviously showing, so I'm thinking that they're probably cutting back on her work schedule for the health of both mother and baby. (Something that I wish the producers of Korean dramas would do and not always be putting their actors and staff on such ridiculously long schedules which comprimise both health and safety of everyone involved.)

As for the lack of "chemistry" that @Disappointed alludes to in the previous comment: There is no chemistry between the couple because each one sees the other one wearing a mask. The lack of chemistry is THE major theme of the drama. They DON'T know each other and they're not allowing themselves to become known to one another...

Disappointed Jun 10 2015 6:23 pm This drama started good and the premise was interesting. However, as it progresses, there's not much story, it's just bits and pieces of information spread out through out the episodes. The main character lacks emotion and is too one dimensional. Overall, unlike Kimura's other drama, this one is forgettable. Kimura and Ueta are both good actors, but this drama does not show a real chemistry between them.

I only wish that they would stop masking her face to show what Kimura's character is seeing. We get the point, already! Hiding Aya's features is an absolute crime against humanity... :(
