"Hot Road" depicts sad and fierce love between 14-year-old Kazuki and 16-year-old Hiroshi.

Kazuki Miyaichi (Rena Nounen) lives with her mother. Kazuki does not like her mother’s boyfriend and she feels that she is not loved by her mother. This leads Kazuki to get into trouble.

Hiroshi Haruyama (Hiroomi Tosaka) is a troubled kid who does part-time jobs for a living instead of going to school. He is a member of the motorcycle gang “Nights”.

Notes

Based on manga series "Hotto Rodo" by Taku Tsumugi (published from January, 1986 to May, 1987 by monthly manga magazine Bessatsu Margaret).
Filming begins in November, 2013.

Aya Jan 14 2019 6:40 pm Done watching the movie last year and got back to this since the main lead guy has a new movie, that's why he looks so familiar. I read the comment talking about their age gap and to be honest, I really thought he's 20 years old. Never knew he's already 31 and 26 at the time of the film. Waaaah.

tsuyoi_hikari Dec 30 2018 6:20 pm I read good reviews about this but it was such a drag to finish the movie. And tbh, I dont know why I even tempted to finish it. I guess because I want to see what other people are seeing but at the end, it remains a grade C movie script and plot wise for me.

Nemui.ko May 03 2017 8:03 am Gotta say this was such a master piece and so underrated, I'm 14 right now, and it teached me a big lesson and touched my heart. I don't believe people are salty about the age difference of the actors, how ridiculous is that? Who cares, they're both really good characters, the movie was like I was watching a real live situation, I love it bc it's so realist and not the usual cliche stuff. Anyway loved it, definitely 5 stars

Aki May 13 2016 2:50 pm I never noticed that the lead's age doesn't match the character until I come to this page. I'm still a high schooler and have seen a lot of my friends who look older than their real age. So yeah these kind of faces are so normal.

Hats99 Mar 01 2016 2:09 pm 26 year old (at the time of filming) Tosaka Hiroomi as 16 year old Haruyama may be a bit of a stretch, but it's not so much that I can't suspend my disbelief. After all, the times were different then. Teenagers in the 70's and 80's did not look like teenagers nowadays. It helps that Omi has a bit of a baby face and that the supporting actors playing his crew were also in their mid-twenties as well. And it also helps that I am a thirty year old woman who has broken many a teenage boys' hearts after they found out I was most definitely NO girl of sixteen, so I can get over the distorted age factor.

Nounen Rena, on the other hand, needed no convincing. In my mind, she is Kazuki. This girl is SIMPLY amazing. Where does that seething, restrained power come from? The look in her eyes, the inflections in her voice. I was really shocked when I watched the making and found her to be someone completely diferent.

This is my first time seeing both of them acting. Well, I've seen Omi in two music videos for JSB - Ryuusei and JSB Dream - and have to admit I just did not care for him. However, Omi's portrayal of Haruyama - even though he may not be the Haruyama of the manga - held this strange and nearly suffocating power over me. Underneath that masculine exterior was something gentle and beautiful. This thirty year old woman was telling herself, "Be still my beating heart!"

There's still a gnawing in my belly that yearns for a chance to return to my high school days. That is how I felt watching this film. I'm sure people had their reasons for feeling bored, but I felt so differently. I experienced nostalgia, sadness, love and fear all at once. A completely different experience than what I had while watching Takahiro Miki's other teen-oriented films Ao Haru Ride.

gisborn Apr 16 2015 10:00 pm I saw the movie cause of rena - cause i really love her in the asa dora.... but i must say that i find this movie is kinda boring and absurd, too childish maybe for me. but then the actors are good actors, and might i add, nice eye candies too, that i succeed watching this movie till the end.

I think the criticism of actor's age is valid because in most movies you wouldn't cast a 40-year-old to play a 10-year-old? Extreme example, yes, but the point is the same. It's not believable. I remember the same criticism was made about the taiga drama Gou when the lead actress played her character as a 10-year-old when she was in her 20s. It's not believable, period.

The movie had good points, but the casting was obviously not one of them. Blind faith defense is always laughable to me.

TM Apr 03 2015 3:48 am I personally disagree that a beautifully creative piece of work can be dismissed just because the actors ages doesn't fit some people taste. I think you shouldn't be watching this if the plot is laughable because the target audience was not your age range anyway. Works like this should only be criticized if enough work and effort was not put into it and that's clearly not the case. The acting was incredible, the sound track and cinematography fit perfectly together. I love this movie, hence the strict defense.

canyounotaskthis Apr 03 2015 3:41 am I just want to clarify that for the ones that think the plot is laughable, the target audience clearly is not your age range, maybe you shouldn't be watching it. Movies are works of art so of course some people will like it others will not, but they are created to touch the ones that feel something watching them. Not everyone will feel the same way. To judge and criticize a piece of work would only make sense when enough effort was not put into it. And clearly that is not the case so it just doesn't make sense to me how people can just be allowed to dismiss this movie based on the actors ages not fitting their taste. This isn't anything new actors are always cast like this, a standard example would be the American film industry, the biggest in the world. Personally this quickly became one of my favorites, I've watched it twice, yes some parts are cliché but the cinematography and the sound tracks falk perfectly together connect with me for some reason. Hence the strict defense hehe

yamakita Mar 30 2015 10:45 pm Good thing I watched the movie before looking up this page! I wouldn't be able to sit through it knowing that a 28-year-old is playing a 16-year-old! It's hard enough knowing that she's playing a 14-year-old! Otherwise, the movie is okay. Story was a bit laughable, but captivating enough to keep my attention until the end.

Omi~ Feb 27 2015 12:50 pm It's really a happiness to see how success this movie are and how Omi's acting in this movie granted him many awards (and not just Hochi Film Award, I hope it'll be updated. He just won Japan Academy Prize for Rookies last night together with Rena Nounen).

I heard, the one who chose Tosaka Hiroomi to be Haruyama Hiroshi (despite I know he don't look like a 16 y.o boy and I laughed so much... with that fact XDDD sorry Ryuji's husbando!) is the mangaka of HOT ROAD herself. ^^ ) /" but maybe I am wrong. But the true things is that Omi actually denied the role many times because he said that there's many person that still pursuing acting while he himself isn't really good yet as a singer and will be better if he focused on singing ^^ until the mangaka of HOT ROAD herself came to him and convinced to him then (i don't know is it in one go or not) he accepted this role.

Jenny Sep 20 2014 3:34 pm @Amy and Niina: I agree. I wish Japanese directors would cast actors and actresses that fit the characters' ages! Especially boys, they always cast older men for teen boys. I would have loved to see actual teenage actors, like in Detective School Q a few years ago: the actors were all 14 and it felt normal.
