Set 3 years after the drama series.

Yuichiro (Takumi Saito) visits a town to give a lecture and meets divorcee Sawa (Aya Ueto) for the first time in 3 years. She now lives alone.

Notes

Movie title "Hirugao" is derived from a relatively new Japanese expression "Heijitsu Hirugao Tsuma" which refers to housewives having afternoon affairs while their husband's are working. The expression "Heijitsu Hirugao Tsuma" is derived from the French film "Belle de Jour” which is itself based on the 1928 novel "Belle de Jour “ by Joseph Kessel.

I know everyone is saying cheating is bad, etc., but from my point of view, they were not happy with their marriage. What's wrong with trying to move on? Is it better to spend the rest of your life with someone you don't love? That is living a lie, isn't it?

Sawa left her husband previously. Kitano also wanted to properly divorce his wife, she just didn't want to let him go. If he was wishy washy and tried to be with both at the same time, I would have no sympathy, but in this case, he tried to make a clean break, but couldn't. I do agree that they should have tried to break it clean before cheating, but it got to the point that Kitano's wife was just trying to hold on to him despite him not loving her anymore. If it's me, it would be so suffocating.

koi Apr 18 2020 5:20 am I personally think this japanese version is better. The ending was sad but the point of the story is no matter how pure your love is, cheating will make your life miserable. If you see the drama, you can see they actually start their relationship because of their loneliness but then it turns into a true love. While the korean version trying to justify how people can fall in love out of their marriage, the japanese version want to show that cheating should never be a choice in your life. I love the chemistry between nerd insect's lover kitano sensei and sawa-chan.

Aii Sep 16 2019 10:55 am Actually i prefer the movie version more than the drama. If you want a better (happy) ending, i recommend to watch the korean version of the drama. It has same vibe (i think its slightly better) and beautiful ost too.

If Yuichiro's wife gave birth to their child(ren), there is no way that Yuichiro will leave his wife, never mind that she won't grant him a divorce. Nori was determined to stay married to him and make Sawa pay for being with her husband. If this was thirty years later and Sawa still alone and Nori dead then I can imagine Yuichiro finally free to seek her out. I wonder whether that is believable in Japan. In the states or in the U.K. or Europe, star-crossed lovers in their golden years have looked each other up when their spouses died or they finally divorced.
