Plot

Coffee Prince’s Flagship Store is a TV series that revolves around the love life and dreams of four young people who meet together at a cafe.

Han-gyeol (Gong Yoo) is a smart young man who hates to be tied down to one career in his life. Abhorring the idea of joining the family business, he is ordered by his grandmother to manage a cafe. Unable to disobey his grandmother, he reluctantly takes over the responsibility of running a cafe and begins to immerse himself in the gourmet coffee business. One day, he meets Eun-chan, a cheerful girl who has an unpredictable personality, and learns the meaning of true love...

I first watched it fifteen years ago, and 2x more since then, basically because the cast all had perfect, dynamic chemistry together. The OST is outstanding and unforgettable as well. You're simply not a true Kdrama fan unless you seek out and watch the classics like this one, and the Four Seasons dramas that began the Hallyu Wave worldwide.

Jen Jun 27 2023 4:23 pm Cute or corny, tragedy or comedy, it’s hard to know? In this era of gender fluidity the story is sort of believable. The most pathetic character is Yoo-joo. Can’t decide what she really wants to do and lets every opportunity slip through her fingers. A workplace which discriminates against women? Hard to believe in this era of equal opportunity. Maybe possible in Korea. Who knows? An entertaining script - but that’s about it.

deliriouslin May 28 2023 9:10 am The first few Kdrama I watched and totally in love with it! Moreover, I end up in a huge crush with Gong Yoo!!! This drama gives me butterflies with the gender neutral situation and realising gender doesn't matter. Many times I think it's beautiful given that it was showing in 2007. Until today I still think that Gong Yoo should be with Yoon Eun-Hye (she's so cute) and they make a great match.

With this drama, casts like Kim Dong-Wook and Kim Jae-Wook caught my eye and still continue supporting them till today. The drama is so fun, engaging and no dull moments, I still misses the whole squad.

Hanna-Dora May 11 2022 11:10 am Okay, I'm definitely late to the party, cause I only started watching Kdramas two years ago and it took me a while to get to check out the older ones. I was one of those snobbish people thinking old dramas must be outdated compared to, say, It's Okay Not To Be Okay or My Mister (to mention some of my favourites), and I was not really curious about them. There's also the fact that I'm in my 30s and I thought old dramas are childish and aimed for teenagers like Boys Over Flowers, so I just assumed they are not for me. And that can be true for many of them, sure, but thank God I finally gave them a chance. After watching Full House and My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, I had to realize that older dramas are more liberated and less artificial than some of the new ones, so I started to understand people who are rewatching them still. But then came Coffee Prince... and my God, what a drama this is. I've seen many amazing dramas but this is the first one I started rewatching immediately after finishing it. And I'm really not the rewatching type cause I don't have enough time for that, but this one I just couldn't let go.

I'm absolutely certain that Coffee Prince is one of the best TV shows ever made, even outside Kdrama-land. I spent a long time wondering what makes it so exceptional and I came to the conclusion that this drama is about how to accept another person fully and wholeheartedly, not just in romantic relationships but in families and friendships as well. It's basically a utopian look at the world. The main character is not a girl acting as a guy. She's just a girl acting completely and unashamedly like herself while other people assume she's a guy. If you think this show will go the makeover way like so many movies about the weird girl transforming into a socially acceptable feminine princess, you'll be surprised. Eun-Chan is totally outside the borders of gender identities and her freedom to express herself any way she likes makes her so attractive to others while also making people open up to her and embrace who THEY are. The whole show is full of characters acting outside the norm society imposes upon them, and everyone is accepted just as they are. Look at the secondary female character... what a refreshing and multi-faceted character she is. It's a revolutionary show, really, especially coming from a patriarchal society like the one in Korea. Also, the female characters are incredibly independent and strong-minded while the guys are a lot more romantic, flipping gender norms on their heads. I saw all the latest Kdramas but I have to say, I've never seen a more progressive one. I thought it would be a funny show about a girl acting like a guy, but it's an incredibly well-written, honest and often heartbreaking series about the constraints of society and the essence of true love that we all keep looking for.

Of course, the power of Coffee Prince also comes from the amazing acting all around. Gong Yoo truly gives this all he's got, and his performance is magnetic, to say the least. His character, starting out as the stereotypical chaebol child, slowly becomes fully formed in front of our eyes, with many flaws and insecurities and a beautiful heart. His struggle to accept his feelings is heartbreaking to watch and the way he portrays this character would be a great fit in any big budget Korean movie. I didn't get the Gong Yoo hype before, cause Goblin was not really my cup of tea, but this show made me understand it all. He really is on a different level, and his chemistry with Yoon Eun-Hye is off the charts. Moreover, in this show, side characters are not there for comic relief only but all have their own stories. Everyone acts in such an authentic way that they practically seem like real people. You easily forget you're watching a drama with this one.

In the recent Coffee Prince documentary coming out in 2020, it was obvious all the cast and the crew loved it so much, and it shows. Everyone cared about this drama so deeply that they created something magical. It definitely stood the test of time. Even the fashion choices that can be so jarring in older dramas are not outdated here. Gong Yoo's wardrobe is basically amazing and the locations are beautiful, especially Lee Sun-Kyun's home. Who wouldn't want to live there.

If you're hesitating, please give this drama a chance. I guarantee it's going to stay with you. Just a wonderful ride from beginning to end. On a final note, I'm so sorry about the untimely death of Lee Eon... He was so endearing in this.

Michel Bullock May 20 2021 11:43 pm I enjoyed watching the movie. The storyline was refreshingly funny in parts I think what let it down was the over-characterisation of the profile of a tomboy. Maybe it is because I am Australian and not Korean that I think the character, Ko Eun-Chan, did not have to over-stuff her mouth full of food every time she ate, for example, roll up more than half of a pizza and stuff it in her gob, generally be totally ungraceful in her movements, not be comfortable in high-heeled shoes or a dress was necessary to convey she was a tomboy.

Didn’t like the love triangle girl- Chae Jung Aen. In the early 2000s this kinda role was like her stereotype. The girl in the middle of 2 brothers and clearly sending them a mixed signals for her own benefits. She will reprise the role in Cain & Abel

hotarumaruchii Sep 26 2020 12:47 pm Today I watched the documentary for Coffee Prince titled My Dear Youth-Coffee Prince and there's a lot of emotional reactions when the cast got together for a talk and going back to the actual place of Coffee Prince; After 13 years, the cast is back for a reunion interview. I first watched Coffee Prince, when I'm still at my high school, been watching Korean dramas since Full House which around 2005, social media isn't as popular today, i think I relied more on blogs & drama forums back then, thankful for them for my kdrama cravings since 2004 lol~ and CP became one of my favorite classic Korean dramas. There's something about the story that seems resonate til today, there's a pinch of life that people can relate to, this kdrama opened a life story to me, when I looked back, I told myself how this drama was ahead of its time back then. This drama still has the best OST for me. When I watched the documentary, I got this feeling of meeting an old friend and listening to Gong Yoo, Yoon Eun Hye, Lee Sun Kyun, Kim Dong Wook & Kim Jae Wook stories about Coffee Prince made me sentimental too. Gong Yoo & Yoon Eun Hye shared that this drama was a miracle to them & it lighted their passion for acting, this was also the drama that they received their first excellence awards as an actor/actress. I got a good memory when I first watched Coffee Prince back in 2008 & I got attached with the characters so when I found out that the cast got together for a documentary, I screamed & jumped out of joy~truly one of the best~thanking the cast that they agreed on to this mbc documentary.

I have a high hope of this drama, seems like it was quite popular that time. The storyline is simple, enough humor here and there. It's interesting to see how the story flows smoothly.

But I just watched the series up to eps 9th, and not sure whether I should keep watching it or not.

Their relationships are too weird for me.

Han Sung re-unite with his ex girlfriend Yoo Joo, who left him for another guy. But after that, take no action when Yoo Joo keep in touch with that another guy. Also no action too when saw a man lay on Yoo Joo's lap? I know he's not main character..but really? At the same time, he's unnecessarily being nice to Eun Chan, even after she said she likes him.

Yoo Joo, who is openly keep in touch with his another guy, in front of Han Sung? Being super nice to Han Gyul, though she awares that Han Gyul like her a lot. Again...really?

Main character, is even more confusing

Han Gyul awares that Yoo Joo is his cousin's girlfriend, keep saying that he can't take his cousin's girlfriend, but keep checking on Yoo Joo? Laying on Yoo Joo's lap? Not good..

For Eun Chan, why keeping it complicated...if she likes him very much, confess that she's a girl will be much easier. If they like each other, they can continue their relationship. It not, end it. Maybe she will lose he man and the job. Keep acting like a boy is really not a good idea, IMO. Be honest, gays relationship is not really acceptable in Korea, in many Asian countries too, I guess. So where you wanna go with this BOY identity? Why bother confess '"I like you" without reavealing "I'm a girl"? If he accepted her, is it because her as a boy? And what happened if someday he found out that she is not a boy? After loving her as a boy?

Will a straight man, fall in love with a person who he thinks as a boy? Is it he has a tendency to be gay? Or it's an instinct, that a girl will be a girl, so that even a straight man can feel it deep down inside, and unconsciously fall in love?

I'm gonna stop it here, because I'm really confused right now ?

Nikki Jun 21 2020 1:53 pm This was the first k-drama that I have watched and absolutely loved it. If you are new to k-dramas I definitely recommend this k-drama. The plot and the cast are all brilliant. This k-drama will make you laugh and cry, it's interesting and different to other romantic k-dramas. I really liked Eun-hye Yoon portrayal of her character. She did a fantastic job.

This is heart-poundingly irresistible if you are into rom-coms and even if you are not! For those that don't like just rom-coms or don't like gender bender genres I would say that this is not a good fit. It is a great drama to begin your K-drama journey though.

I love how bad-ass of a woman Eun Chan is. I love how she puts her romantic endeavour behind her in order to take care of her family. I love how Han Gyul's love for her is so raw, intense, and pure it leaves you dreaming for days. Ugh, I've never been as obsessed with a KDrama before as I am now with Coffee Prince.

@Starrynight, yes, you're right. This is definitely as addicting as coffee.

Romana Jan 21 2019 1:59 pm Coffee prince breaks my heart in a nostalgic way. I don't know how did I get so attached to it but from the very first episode I knew that I was going to love it. I have never seen such a drama that captures the emotions of characters so beautifully, the beach scene still haunts me to this day. The characters of the coffee prince were unbelievably real, both Han Gyul and Eun Chan were never the stereotypes the show set them to be at the first episode. They both had deep reasons to do things, their own way of immaturities. There is a bus scene from the episode Eun Chan coming from the exhibit all dolled-up. She cries thinking that she had no place in Han Sung's life. Even that scene shows a tomboyish girl who never cared for her appearance, then someone she likes shows up, liking one of the most feminine girls she had never seen. Eun Chan thinks in the book about Yoo Joo "When I saw her smile I wanted to work on my own smile." So Eun Chan modifies herself to look similar the girl Han Sung likes, but even like that she sees that she will never be like Yoo Joo or have a place in the life of Han Sung. This is just a usual girl who tries to change herself for the guy she likes. But when she realizes that she likes Han Gyul, it's so different from before. Because with him, she doesn't need to play the role of a girl. She doesn't need to be insecure about her lack of femininity and Han Gyul likes her for this. Without the femininity, the courting, the plays that happen between a man and a woman Han Gyul likes her for who she is: the pure kid who helps everyone, who puts her family before her any wantings, the kid who works relentlessly instead of being crushed under pressure like him. Coffee Prince is not a drama that can be basically called as gender-bender rom-com. It's a beautiful drama that depicts the love of two humans, how they get inspired from each other and the life of people around them. So, please give it a chance.

Marble Jan 04 2019 10:34 am I can't decide whether I like this drama or not, it's pretty chill, relaxing to watch, but I still skipped a lot of scene as I felt the story was dragging on and boring. However Yoon Eun-Hye is a damn good actress in it, she plays a boy so well that I almost believed her. Most of the genderswitch dramas are pretty shallow in that regard, because you can always tell that it's a she and not a he, and wonder why noone else notices it. Here she acts so well, I really would give her a big price for it. The theme is also very adultlike with the different relationships between the characters, I really liked it. I think only thing that would have made it even better if it was actually portraying a relationship between two men, I don't know why I feel like this, but I definitely ship the male Eun-Chan and Han-Gyul more than girl Eun-Chan and Han-Gyul. One good advice, don't eat while watching this, the scenes where characters eat are so disgusting, I almost throw up several times!

Kdrama Jul 27 2018 10:52 pm I have watched this drama many times through the years and have enjoyed it--great actors and great chemistry! It's a very timeless drama that hasn't lost it's appeal. I do have to say though that while I think that Yoon Eun Hye is a very superb actress, I always struggled with the character Eun Chan. I think I would have to agree with some of the comments posted here. I found Eun Chan to be quite manipulative, prideful, and selfish which was hidden behind her need to be the breadwinner of her family. Although her stated main objective, at least in beginning, was to bring income to her family, it seemed more about her own need to feel worthy and useful to the family. She was clearly frustrated by the mother's selfishness and hid behind the needs of her family and her own pride in being able to bring money to the table. This to me was evident in specific close relationships where she always seemed to expect/look for leniancy, handouts, and most of all food. I think her obsession with food seemed to be a window to her true character--so blinded by the lack that it caused her to be unable to really consider the people around her. All of the characters around her seemed to encourage her behavior with food, and again I think it just showed up her greatest weakness: being self absorbed with her own needs that it caused her to neglect the real needs of others, which came thru towards the end of the drama. Might be a bit overreaching, but in any case I still feel it's a great drama and well-worth the watch!

Gong Yoo becomes a major star with this one and grows as an actor into the dynamic lead in Goblin as well as major films. I think he’s one of the most talented and versatile actors in the world.

And there was also one other instance where I felt that the drama was forced onto the story, so they could drag it for longer. I would completely enjoy Han-Gyul, Eun-Chan, Han-Sung, Ha-Lim, Seon-Ki, Min-Yeom (and Manager Hong too, but he's kinda gross) just goofing around instead of that unnecessary drama that was added.

domi Jan 09 2017 2:15 pm I re-watched it because of Goblin and this drama really grew on me. The chemistry between the lead couple is undeniable, they look so good together and Han-Gyul's attraction towards Eun-Chan looks so genuine which makes me think that Gong Yoo is not even acting that part, or maybe he's really that good of an actor. Oh and when he smiles, sets women's hearts on fire. Other 3 coffee princes each having interesting personalities and are likable in their own way and Han-Sung as the sweetest friend/boyfriend you can imagine.There are also characters that annoyed the hell out of me - Eun-Chan's sister, Yoo-Joo. I was also not fully satisfied with the ending, I wanted to see more of Han-Gyul and Eun-Chan.

Gong yoo is so freaking hot and handsome and Yoon eun hye is beautiful even without make up, short hair and poor fashion.. YEH really nailed it I think for me this is the best YEH drama so far second is Goong third is Lie to Me! Plus GY and YEH are best kisser!

Sam Oct 03 2015 10:05 pm I'm Egyptian and I am a big fan of Korean drama :) Coffee prince was the first Korean drama to watch and I loved it so much since then I've watched more than 30 dramas just in one year ! Korean drama is good, funny, short (long stories are boring), lovely actors & actresses and a good production, so no doubt that everyone loves Korean drama. keep good working ... fighting !

IF, and I mean IF, since it was not the case in the series, IF she had done the trip, the room and board, the schooling etc ALL on her own dime, if she had not come back and pretty much instantly started in saying how she'd how she cook, clean etc etc for him if he asked right...If that was the case then I'd say I was wrong. But this was not a woman trying to be independent and "not need a man.' It was merely a add-on plot device. which is fine. IF it was in-character. Which I found it not to be. The MOMENT she got the guy. The minute they are together then she changes character traits instantly, solely to have a reason for them to be apart so they can show the obligatory happy reunion. Shallow and poorly handled plot manipulation. Seriously. Look into how long it takes to be a master barista. First, it is an apprentice system. And longest they run is a year. And the year long apprenticeship is only for in-house promotion. Not for ability. Which takes a month, max. It is not some arcane and unknown and hard-to learn-art. It is making coffee. Not rocket science or trying the be a chef. And anyway, she had already worked with a trained barista. So, no need to leave to a foreign country for a hilariously long time just to learn to make a cup of coffee. But plot demanded it so they shoehorned it in. As to her rubbing his face in all the men she was around, he didn't look like he thought it was funny. And yeah, it was a sadistic joke to play on him about going away another year. By definition. She deliberately caused pain for her amusement. The character didn't do that before iirc. And he didn't look like he thought it was funny either. It was simply just audience manipulation. Now, if you think it is wrong of me to think it was fine until the end .. I'm sorry. Opinions differ. Personally I was offended by your accusation. Barefoot and Pregnant? Really? Sheeesh...Overreact often?

Yana Jun 30 2015 11:50 pm When I watched Coffee Prince, I was thrilled by Yoo Joo and Han Sung's story because it was almost the same as my imagined scenario that I made a few years back. I liked how the drama production handled it. It was complicated and something more for mature audience. Actually, I was very interested in Yoo Joo's character. I could relate with her more than the main female lead. Yoo Joo never really give her all in love. When she was attracted to another man she broke up with Han sung and followed the other man. When she notice that Han Sung is attracted to a different girl, she realizes that she wasn't wanted and decides to break up. She was never attached and always moving. And it makes her realistic and relatable.

Another thing that stood out in Coffee Prince was Han Gyul. Really like the idea of the ability to love somebody despite their identity. So seeing Han Gyul going through that idea and acceptance was really fun to watch. I don't really mean fun fun, but more like having the feels.

I can't believe Im reading "hate" reviews about the lead character, who was JOKING about all the boys in her life which she and her lover obviously shared the same humor and was okay about it! And how "DARE" she live out her dreams (which obviously became her aspiration early on in the series when she started working in the coffee shop) rather than live off men for the rest of her life! That's offensive to even think of think of! Way to send a woman back in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant!

If anyone was manipulative, mean, taunting, sadistic, entitled and bitchy, it was Yoo-Joo! I know they were trying to "turn he around" at the end bit it didn't work with me. My only disappointment was that he didn't dump her butt in the end!

And if course, ya can't ever so living Jae-Wook! Tall and sexy as always!

Great cast! Great series! Sorry for the defensive nose-bleed!

(If anyone knows how/where to purchase this series made for DVD players in the US please inform) The characters, script and the way in which it was filmed all drew me. However, they're way too addictive - I actually have to restrain myself between series. Otherwise, I'm watching every available minute I've got! My husband says they're like my own personal brand of "crack". - I say there are worse things.

ace Nov 03 2014 2:23 pm Decent enough romcom, I suppose. But if I am to be honest I kind of really started to dislike the Yoon Eun-Hye character towards the end. I felt they passed the natural ending point when they then suddenly had her take off to pursue her new dreams. To me it was out of character.

Personally, after all he'd went through for her I was thinking why bother take her back. Abandoned for 2 years while the main communication from her seems to be taunting him about all the men with her. Then twisting his heart out of shape for a joke at the end? She kinda turned into an sadistic entitled b!tch. If they'd wrapped it up without that pointless last attempt at audience manipulation I could have loved this series. The bane of Korean dramas. Never seeming to be able to write a good ending.

But aside from that, it was a pleasant enough show with a good cast.

I love how the storyline follows a group of people, instead of JUST the two main leads, it encompasses everyone involved. This stands out in all areas, the cinematography, directing, writing, acting, etc....all very seamless and very well done. Also, great songs. Just an all around good show. Much Love~

I also like the relationship between Han Gyul and Eun Chan. Han Gyul (IMHO) is not 100% handsome but very charming in his own way, esp when he teases and protects Eun Chan. I like this drama. Love it a lot :)

Yes, again why she went home. Did Han Yoo Joo have a miscarriage? Yes, which is why the reference about not going back to the hospital was made. Presumably she couldn't conceive anymore, but they were both moving on with their lives anyway. Was there a 2nd coffee shop? Yes, Ko Eun Chan asked if it was all going to be ready by September. All the questions were answered in the last 15 minutes of eps 17. Personally, I loved it, and thought the ending was just right.

Did they get married? Did the cousin who was a music producer, did the wife have a miscarriage? Was there a 2nd coffee shop? Feels like I was teased toward some conclusion but nothing. If the 17th episode is really the last episode, I am going to be so regretful of watching it. I'm not watching anymore asian dramas, I don't have the time to be teased. You need to hire better subtitle translaters, their company flashes up on the screen so much, at least it will be a name that a smart film producer/director will stay away from.

His acting was soooo real...and the moment he started singing in the morning to Eun-hye Yun.... I fell in love, seriously... ^______^
