Plot

Lee Kang (Yoon Kye-Sang) grew up in a small seaside town, dreaming of becoming a cook. He is now a neurosurgeon. He looks cold-hearted, but, in fact, he hides his warm heart.

When Moon Cha-Young (Ha Ji-Won) was a child, she met Lee Kang at a small restaurant in the seaside town. Lee Kang cooked and gave her a meal. This is the happiest memory for Moon Cha-Young and it eventually led her to become a chef.

Neurosurgeon Lee Kang and Chef Moon Cha-Young meet again at a hospice ward.

Aren Jul 16 2023 6:06 am Finishedxwatching it at last phew after fast forwarding the main characters(dead) romance and watch only the parts that has the cousin role or the side part. Never realize that a neurosurgeon and a chef can meet at every corner of the hospital, or the street,or the road or say in whole of Korea. Never realized a neurosurgeon always bow his head all the time that my neck hurts just by watching them. They never look at each other eyes as both of them has their heads bow down. Overall a mediocre story.

deliriouslin May 28 2023 9:07 am This drama brings you to Greece for a tour :) I'm a fan of Ha Ji-Won and Yoon Kye-Sang, put these 2 together it can't go wrong. The story is kind of solemn in a hospice setting, the cases are sad and heart-warming, do prepare tissues! This is also one of the best childhood romances with an inspiring plot twist to it. OST is superb too! It's one of my repeat watchlists. You can also watch Yoo Teo here and he definitely leaves an impression.

He carried the role so well. So was Ha ji won I saw her in. Empress Ki - she is a superb actress. Loved her in it. Would love to watch both these actors of Chocolate together again. Their chemistry was superb. Will watch it again. Thumbs up .

Future kdrama star Nov 15 2022 1:34 pm I'm on episode 10. This is a beautiful drama. Sad, touching with a little humor. Be prepared to cry. No a lot of chocolate in it LOL. It's set in a hospice when people go for care before they die really sad. Ha ji won is great I like her character she cares for everyone and brings out playful side of Lee Kang. Yoon Kye-Sang is so handsome. I like that his character isn't good or bad. The character has a good heart defeated by the abusive family. I want him to get strength and expose his evil family. Hoping for a happy ending for Lee kang and cha young.

MJ Oct 01 2022 8:44 pm I read that this was a highly rated drama but I by-passed it among many others because the cover photo did not strike me as a well matched pair, a chef and a surgeon together seemed an odd situation.

What I really do not understand is why Cha Young (Ha Ji Won) retreated to be far from Dr. Lee Kang (Yoon Kye Sang) back to Greece, after they discover each other and finally find their love after her long search for Lee Kang as her first love. Why did she hide herself away?? I don't understand. Could the script writer/story author explain??

Othewise, the story would have been great if it were not for this very odd ending. The original music sound track was very beautiful I must say.

I found it uplifting and thought that because of the diverse characters and events at the Hospice, it could have gone on for years. I was sorry it did not. It was not high drama, but introspective with feeling. The acting was good, expressive, not overdone, usually. I did giggle whenever a character fell and overacted on the ground. Music had me humming the tune long after I finished the series, thank you for that. Who played the piano so expertly, the fast trills were something I looked forward to. Who did the costumes and why sin't that person listed. Who did the beautiful cooking, setting up of the food scenes? Why can't I find their name? They were amazing and wonderful. Thank you. I have watched the series several times. It is a light touch on my heart and always a feel-good experience.

Jinna Jun 03 2022 1:38 pm I just finished binged watching and omg i am bawling like a baby now! I am so obsessed with both yoon kye sang and ha jiwon. I have to admit when this was first out i was very scpetical because i wasnt thrill with ha jiwon in hospital ship. I only watched yks in beyond the clouds and that was difficult to see him in that kind of character. Also i thought this is about chocolate per se, hence reminded me of an english movie of the same title. But boy was o wrong!! 360 degree wrong. My biggest mistake was to read rhe review and spolier first. Should hv not done. Should have went and dive in from rhe begininng. I will just highlight the best parts (at least for me) from this drama. YKS and HJW..what can i say. Despite some said they have no chemistry, to me they have chemistry, physics and biology, all the science shenninigans. It is not cliche kind of romance. The eyes, the body language, the narrative..enough to hook me into their love stories. Since the writer has set a very devasted background for lee kang, i can understand why it was difficult for YKS's character to appear lovey dovey like any other ML in the beginning. HJW also surprised me in this drama. Her innocent and yet sad character was so pulling that it is so understandable why anyone could fall for cha young. And then the other casts. I especially love all the individual stories of the hospice patients. The kid actors in this drama are also amazing! I noticed how all the casts are so relatable. Even the antagonist Lee Jun. i cannot resist frm his charm despite his cycnical self. Even his idiot dad is so intriguing despite the dumbness of the character. The only 5 characters i really despise are the grandma, Lee Jun's mom, Cha Young's mom, Michael's twin and Lee Kang's auntie. Even so i want to congrats the casting director for able to cast amazing actors and actresses.

Ram Apr 12 2022 5:29 am A failed attempt to mix culinary art, love story and doctor's life altogether in a drama serial. Hardly understand what's so tempting about 'haute cuisine' displays in hospice care unit. Wrong combination - resulting in prolonged, tasteless show.

But the film score is melodiously beautiful - all the songs.

I would not watch the episodes even if they pay me. Put those yells and screams aside, I should have just Heard the music.

soom Mar 23 2022 9:28 am Very gently paced drama, leaving blanks in the family struggles narrative for the viewer to fill in with info that comes along in later episodes. I watched it on release, then 3 years later. I had to take notes.

I found the push-and-pull to be repetitive even though it served to illustrate the ML's ambivalence and hesitancy, how he tried to protect himself from hurt, but it did get a bit frustrating till I let go of projecting my wish for a fairy-tale progression and ending. Life just isn't that simple in reality.

I had trouble liking the writer's intentions toward the ML till I had a flash--were the onions being peeled in the kitchen scenes a metaphor for his character and the story? There are ways to 'get long' with onions, or you can stubbornly deal with them on your own terms and be stung and brought to tears. One of my favorite scenes in the drama was when Kang was helping Cha young make dumplings in the kitchen the night before she left, and she gently put one of those step-in aprons on him. She did it as she approached all tasks: slowly, gently and deliberately, getting all the details right. Best scene depicting her character.

So many dramas insist on extraneous situations to explain feelings or actions, but between these two, their love evolved as they opened their hearts and trusted the other. This is patient, masterful storytelling.

I remember my friend said, she loved to see yoon kye sang as jang chen in the outlaw, and I was like, what?! I didn't find him attractive at all, but now look at me, I'm searching for all his works/ dramas all day. seriously he has his own charm, and among all his works, I love chocolate the most, because he looks so handsome and attractive here.

Although Lee Kang And Cha Young don't have much chemistry. But I like the chemistry between Cha Young and Min Seong. And Cha Young and Lee Jun. All of the actors/actress is the best. I cried so much from episode 3 to the last episode. It really give you a meaning in life and you will learn how to love your life and other people. Thank you Ha Ji Won and all the cast of Chocolate! glen Dec 09 2021 11:03 am This is a very overlong series with masses of unnecessary characters and flashback scenes. The love story took far too long to get going and was thence over far too quickly. Far too much focus on cooking and patients. There wasn't much chemistry between the leads and the heroine's decision to swan off to pursue her own ambitions under the excuse of "resting" was stupid. Chocolate didn't have much to do with any of it and the coincidence regarding it was poor. 4/10

Chocolate is superb love story, drama with some real well acted emotion and is strangely uplifting considering the overall storyline. I don’t like Kang’s family but that’s the intention. So many great ‘lead’ characters with their own melodramas but the main relationship is really special .. great chemistry. The food and cooking scenes are really clever in moving the story along.. the food is otherworldly to a westerner .. yummm .. can Ha Ji Won cook like this ? 5 stars or more from me

I was really hoping that he and Ha Ji Won would have been dating by now. Their natural and undeniable chemistry in the drama was beyond words. Why! ?

I have watched more than 3 times and i couldnt ask for more, this is literaly the best drama. The story is veey complete with all the perfect casts, and i really like slow moving romance. This is just what i need. Everything is very heartwarming. The cinematography is also perfect. 100/10? must watch!

I read that her real brother died the year before so I think we see the pain of loss for real in some scenes. This is a story about brothers and conflict, but what great resolutions.

I love the guitar player. He is so entertaining in Hyena.

You know, when Dr Lee Kang couldn’t be honest with her about his mom... I wish he could have had a conversation about that at the end, given their time of separation. I thought the writer showed that it wasn’t just she that needed time away. He needed to heal enough to be honest about his mom. But we needed him to admit that. Meanwhile! Uff, he had to go far in that last scene. They are really in good shape. Thanks for the wonderful show. I have seen it 3 times now.

I’m tired of crying I have cried in other kdramas like time and cloy and something in the rain but oh my goodness never this much this kdrama is a real tear dropper ! So real life yes ! Actors are so good ! Especially the children ! I thought she was good in secret garden but this is truly a wonderful loving part she’s playing now ! There has got to be another season to this kdrama !

I watched his very first drama (She is Nineteen) and his character on this is way more serious. I think his character on "My sister-in-law is 19" is more like of his real life character which is naughty and funny.

Also, as an expression of rejection when the food is refused. Loved the individual stories of the hospice dramas sharing dramas of sadness, empathy, loss and enjoyment of the life you have left. In some ways, it may have served as a lesson for those who were not dying in not avoiding their feelings or truths. Are we so afraid others can't handle the truth (thank you Jack Nicolson), or we are not mature enough to express the truth, (before it is too late). Loved the story and the excellent acting skills. Wish there was less posing or cameo shots. Left me wondering if there were any "normal" people in this series. All the shouting and rudeness made me want to turn off the audio. Thank you.

Ash Dec 15 2020 7:50 pm Finished watching this in 1 day. Great actors with great acting skills but sadly this is a typical korea melodrama. The girl and the guy like each other but never said it, they end up in misunderstanding, the guy will have some crisis and try to push the girl away, then they finally confessed after long wait, they'll be happy for like 5 minutes, something come up then the girl will leave the guys to go somewhere, the guy patiently wait for her and they met again and lives happily and the end. It took them 14 episodes to confessed love to each other, the drama is draggy. I watched until the end just because of Ha Ji Won and Yoon Kye Sang. Ha Ji Won needs to choose different genre of drama next, both her latest drama (chocolate and hospital ship) is a waste of her talent. She better off doing movies than this kind of mediocre melodrama. This drama is definitely not my cup of tea.

When ji young died I really cry my grandchildren ask why was I crying because I lost a friend. My children won't let me watch it any more. I watch when they go out to work that every day. Elsa Aguirre Sep 23 2020 1:30 pm I watched this entire series and really enjoyed it. I waited for Kang and ChaYoung to kiss until the late episode when it finally happened. I did not like the kiss. I needed the actors to hug for a long time., to look into each other s eyes, to smile as saying they accepted their fate which was to love each other. The lovers-to-be had finally overcome many internal hurdles and had finally come together! ChaYoung s PTSD was still their tying her down. But their love seemed immense due to their circumstances and a kiss in the mouth did not measure up to the depth that their relationship symbolizes. And No, I didn’t t miss French sexy kissing, not yet. Next, the dog was protected, the animals eaten were not, opening Manila clams with a knife is cruel. I do eat animals. Loved all the actors and loved that this site has their photos all here. I really like all their acting and ChaYoung s brother as comedic relief, is very effective.

Chocolate lover Sep 23 2020 3:14 am This drama it is not everyone cup of tea and eventhough this is cup of the tea that someone look into, this drama have even greater meaning of that. It is definitely a gem, a drama that you can learn through life and death. If you reflect to the real world, I think this one is close to it, differ with any Kdramas life that has been there (at least the one I already watched). We deal with PTSD, we deal with environment around us good and bad, and most of the time we learn from our society without we are knowing it. Just like what happen with the Cha Young and Kang when they first start avoiding each other but through several events in the hospice and kindness they can find a way about being true of their feeling. If you understand well, and put yourself as in the character, you will find out why they act each other like that.

Seeing this drama really need an open mind, reflection, and digesting well. So if you want to see "Kdramas", this is really not your drama.

I, my self, is on third time rewatch, and learn more when rewatch. I hope you guys can find something meaningful as well through Chocolate and especially learn about kindness :)

Tsokolate Sep 19 2020 6:19 am I watched this because I was doing a Jang Seung Jo marathon, and hey, Ha Ji Won as a lead actress should be great right?

The plus of this series: -OSTs are great. -cinematography is also nice -the side stories of the patients were good

The downsides: -Although it is refreshing to see Ha Ji Won in a new role, I’m not a fan of her character. The role is something Go Hyong Jin can be typecast (I dunno if other will understand me with this) -No sparks or chemistry between the leads. Even though there were remote chance of Lee Jun and Cha Young being together, I hoped that they can actually have that “arc” -The ending. Why was Cha Young avoiding Lee Kang when he was in Europe? Was the time away not enough?

I know sometimes we need some time to heal, I just don’t get it sometimes when a “person”/“character” was so in love with the other person and when things are going smoothly, they would suddenly change their mind and be the one who will need space and time for reasons that were present from the beginning.

Expression of life not “ Hollywood” Thank heavens! These films surpass anything generally in America. The casting was well chosen. Life with its tragedy’s never overwhelms the film, gives hope, with love and insight. Needless to say the chemistry between the two leads is dynamic and tastefully displayed. Truly hope there is another season. What a wonderful discovery to have found this production!

Every episode sends off a heartache coupled with the depth of the stares of the actors. You definitely shouldn't miss this drama it is life changing for me since it is full of lessons that we must live the tomorrow that somebody wished they have lived.

However, I think the relationship development between female lead and male lead is so slow, especially for a romance drama. I think, it feels like the relationship between female lead and male lead is not the focus of this drama even though the theme is romance. If you need a good cry from watching a drama, this is a drama for you. Every episode is touching and can make you cry one way or another, beware there are many deaths. Ps. I don't usually pay much attention about clothes, but it seems laike HJW always wears brown/white toned clothes. Is it because the title is chocolate that they need to make her wear such colour?

Most of them are saying this drama was really good and you won't regret watching it so decided to give it a try. And i'm glad i that i chose to watch it because this is a masterpiece. Every single episode is just really good. The storyline, cast, ost, directing and just everything from this drama is perfect. I love this so much. If you feel hesitant to watch this, just stop thinking and go straight away to watch this drama. You won't regret it.

Her character here was different from her other roles in the past. She is more like a timid, careful and shy type human being but she has this type of being a fighter since she helps a lot in the story which were unexpected bec of the character she was portrying. For the 2 leading men, this was the first time watching them in kdrama. I love them both. Its just i felt sad with its ending. It feels there is somthing missing.

ETulane Apr 03 2020 8:12 pm I watched this drama because it was helmed by HJW - and was so severely disappointed. The script was poorly constructed, there was no chemistry between HJW and her lead actor. HJW showed better chemistry with Hyun Bin -Secret Garden and Ji Chang Wook - Empress Ki. It is easy to forgive the absence of actor chemistry but what really sank this drama was the poorly written script. Flashbacks are not substitute for good plots - how lazy was that!! You can have Oscar winning actors but if the script stinks there is no saving the show.

Will I stop watching HJW? Probably not and I still believe her best work is still ahead of her. I just hope she finds a vehicle that better show cases her talent. Until that day arrives, I will be watching re-runs of Secret Garden and Empress Ki.

By far, this drama is in my top 3 list this year. Been a fan of yoon kye sang and ha ji won ever since secret garden (hjw) and who are you (yks). Thank you for pairing them up in this awesome drama. rating of 10/10 for me. no regrets!

I used to watch a lot of Korean dramas in the past, which I enjoyed. Glad to be watching them again, but this time on Netflix.

I like both main actors. I love Ha Ji Won, I don’t know the male actor, Yoo Kiye Sang, but I do enjoy his acting.

I don’t know why the ratings are so low..

The drama felt real, like it was relatable to your every day life nothing mushy or artificial. This was life and how it happens not in dramas. I did feel that the leads didn't have chemistry together but then their story was so real that I felt that their feelings were sincere and that life is more than hugs and kisses and fluffy things. The soundtrack was also amazing picked up a few good songs along the way. It was my first time watching Lee Kang In any drama and he did his job well. It's always nice to watch

Nadia Rushedge Feb 01 2020 7:40 pm Having a hard time getting into this drama.The cinematography and the story's concept are great but the script and directing are terribly lacking. I also don't think the lead actress was a good match-up with this director/drama. The director uses a lot of long pauses and still shots and she is an actress who doesn't do well with face-acting.

In dramas, there are actors who are great at delivering lines that are sharp and snappy and there are actors who can say so much with their face in a 8sec long pause scene (Son Ye Jin is very good with that). This actress is great with delivering sharp snappy lines and otherwise, is a lot like Song Hye Kyo... dead in the face. It doesn't help with the way her character is portrayed.

I'm kinda getting tired of kdramas using self-deprecation as "humility". It's not; it's simply low self-esteem and a terrible way for people to talk about themselves when they lack self love/like. It's unattractive. That trait, especially in female leads, is annoying.

I wish drama directors would figure out a way to portray female drama leads as confident, feminine and humble without making them look and act like middle-aged librarians living in the countryside.

I do hope this drama picks up the pace and storytelling soon.

The plot was very unlikely and slow to develop and I’m not sure it was good to have the baddies getting the hospital in the end. I disagree Yoon Hye Sang and Ha Jin Won had chemistry together. They acted well in their roles but I feel they were emotionally indifferent to each other in real life, especially him to her but probably both ways. Nice to see Jang Seung Jo again, he gets right into his parts, he needs to get his ears fixed, but maybe not as that is how I recognise him. Great to see male leads with hair falling in their eyes and the backdrop in Greece was perfectly choreographed and a joy to watch. I love the Korean accent when they speak English, really cute. I notice Korean dramas always star ugly Westerners, is that to make sure the locals are not out shone!

Yoon kye sang and ha ji won are already aces in their field but the one who caught my attention was jang seung jo. He is such a versatile actor. Never seen Kim Won-Hae in a serious role. Also I didn't know Jang Seung-Jo real age. He looks in his late 20s or early 30s. Glad he is getting more Dramas. 4.5/5.

After i watch a few eps, i keep continue to watch it even knowing this will be that tear jerking drama. Whatever the ending will be, happy or sad. Because their acting is no joke, the story how the crew and cast delivered it was beautiful. And i'm glad that i've watched this.

rachel Jan 18 2020 6:10 pm i had seen this drama floating around on netflix for a good while but i didn't feel like watching it because i felt like the actors were "too old" for my taste. one day i was like, "whatever, i'll try it!" and it was the best decision ever.

i love how the main characters are so connected, throughout all their lives. i love how although lee jun and kang have their battle going on, jun always mentions how he wants to beat him the right way and not with the help of his parent's sabotaging. how he even goes through a "why are we always fighting?" realization. i love how its not the typical family fights for heir rights type of chaebol drama.

one dislike was that i really thought minseong was going to portray a more important character, they fr killed him off after the 3rd episode and im never gonna forgive them for that. i guess it was better than dragging the "best friend falling for the main guy's girl" trope though. they played that off so beautifully though, i cant lie. chayoung had finally decided to give minseong a chance because of how sweet he was, only for her first love to turn out to be his best friend... what a slap to the face fr.

this drama was truly beautiful and i have no regrets watching it. just sad with all the character deaths that occurred.

However, I was a bit disappointed in episode 15 when Kang mourned his mother’s death in a stairwell by himself instead of with Cha who was in his car after she told him it was his mother who was stranded with her when the building collapsed .... I thought what a missed opportunity:( ... oh well .....overall l enjoyed this drama and sad to see it end.

Love Kang as the lead love interest because his ambivalence to Cha is what classic romance are made of and when he finally put all the pieces together it will be worth the wait!!!!! Don’t care for Jun’s treatment of Jang but his kindness to Cha in this juncture is necessary in this story and makes for great conflict! However, Jun and his parents are abusive and cruel to Kang and I don’t care for them.

BTW sorry u had to read my Rant i hope this drama makes more sense. and we dont have to watch more 2 dude fuck the girl before the dude she loves does it

They should have looked for her or if they learned that chae young has disappeared, they should have called back the emergency team. Another is when they’re in the hospital and the leading man who is a doctor offered piggy back ride. Should have gotten a wheel chair. But of course, drama. Haha

I do wish Jun turns out to be a 'family' to Kang. To answer your question, the family did not want anything to do with Kang and his mother, but in episode 1 his mother announced in the hospital in front of everyone that Kang is the family's relatives too. The family only accept Kang because they want to save their face in front of everybody. On the reason why Kang is still around the family, i guess it's for revenge for how the family treat his mother.

Ha Ji Won will always be my favorite kdrama actress. I watched a lot of her dramas and movies. I was really excited for her return. For personal preference, I like her in more badass roles.

Even Lee Jun is said to lose his family in sampoong collapse,, who was that family? I don't understand one thing. If the Lee family is so bound to get rid of kang including witch grandma, then why did they get him accepted in the family. I can understand his uncle/aunt's dislike, but what about that granny. A very poignant drama so far. My kind of melodrama, reminiscent of Yoon Kye Sang's previous drama Beyond the Cloud.

I really love the characters of Ha Ji Won, Yoon Kye Sang and Yoo Teo so far. As much as I know and love that Cha Young x Lee Kang is canon and endgame, I can't help but like Cha Young x Min Seong as well, I love their friendship and simplistic relationship. It saddens me that the only person who cares for Lee Kang is ending up with such fate. But I guess it's the plot device the writer opted for. My heart aches for all three of them. Ha Ji Won tried to move on but ended up back to square one, Min Seong fell for a woman who loves his best friend and Lee Kang who is losing the only meaningful relationship in his life.

I also see layers in Lee Jun's character. He might be vicious on the outside, but I sense honour within the layers. I cannot wait for how it'll unravel though. I see no redeeming factors in his parents and Grandmother though. They're terrible, materialistic, superficial people through and through.

I know this is gonna be an emotional rollercoaster, but I cannot wait for how it'll unfold.

Kwan Dec 02 2019 1:33 pm I watched the first two episodes last night, and could hardly sleep because I kept thinking about it. I can see that this is going to be one of those fate-weaves on several levels. I've liked Yoon Kye Sang since I saw him in "Road No. 1," (my very favorite Kdrama), and then again in "The Good Wife." If there is one thing that bugs me about Kdrama, it's that IF there is a happy ending, we only get a fleeting glance of that happiness. I hope this one is different.

They had us fall in love only to take him away from us so quickly, especially as he is such an endearing best friend as well. From what I see, it looks like Cha Young and Kang will be working at a hospice due to their connection with Min Seong who ends up dying later on at a hospice? Super excited to see how their romance unfold, I'm just a bit heartbroken that the only real and meaningful relationship Kang has left is being stripped away from him... :( His family is shit, and I don't want to see them being happy at all. I hate his grandma and his uncle and his wife. Jun seems to want to do things fair and square so I'll hold off on having negative opinions of him as of yet. On another note, her relationship with her brother is HILARIOUS. The fact that he keeps on bringing up their past lives and what she did to him in their past life is so funny to me, I can't help but adore him despite him being so annoying.
