Choi Dae-Hyun (Ji Chang-Wook) walks despondently through a residential back alley after getting dumped by a girl. Sitting nearby are three high school girls, including Jung Saet-Byul (Kim You-Jung). She thinks Choi Dae-Hyun is cute and asks him to buy them a pack of cigarettes. Instead of getting cigarettes, they girls receive a lesson from Choi Dae-Hyun. He thinks the girls are just a bunch of knuckleheads, but Jung Sae-Byul is now even more smitten with him and kisses him.

3 years later, Choi Dae-Hyun manages his family owned convenience store. Although, high school girls like to come in and take pictures with him, the store doesn't make a lot of money. Choi Dae-Hyun has also decided to put up a "part-timer worker needed" sign, due to the heavy hours he has been working. Sometime during the night, Jung Saet-Byulwalks into the store. She is now an adult and applies for the part-time job.

Also does anyone know the song that Hong Jang-Mi sings? i dont think its included in the spotify playlist and i cant find it anywhere. It goes like this: "when the play is over" "Alone in the audience" "The lights are turned off" "have you ever seen such a stage?" If anyone knows the song, please let me know! Thank you :)))) I cant say how much i loved the show enough so ill say it again now hahaha

TT Aug 08 2022 4:26 am It's a pretty generic Kdrama RomCom plot, but it is extremely heightened by the performances of the 2 leads. Its a very, very good casual/lighthearted kdrama. I binge-watched this one.

Also, it is quite different than the original webtoon. While, they made it have more generic kdrama tropes--I think the main characters are much more likeable in this version

I’m really surprised to see another talent of Ji Chang Wook and Kim_You-Jung in comedy drama, their actings are so smooth and naturally funny. They both are adorable together. Not every actor can fit in comedy. Actually I repeat watching in Netfix, so happy. I hope to see them both in comedy again.

vitz Jun 04 2022 5:43 am still the best drama I've ever watched, none are like it. This is the show that gives me blockbuster syndrome and what made me love Kim Yoo Jung as this is the first time I've watched her.

I have to praise:

1. Kim Yoo Jung: for total transformation method acting, you would forget that she has ever played Hong Sang Nom or Gil Oh Sol. Noone acts as confident and charming as her, you will keep looking at her. Especially her eyes. The whole package all-rounder: beauty, charisma, majority of action without stunts, memorable lines. We took every details of her for granted.

The fact that she sounded in higher pitch than usual. Everything about her is perfect. And she has chemistry with everyone. No wonder she won a SBS Excellence Award 2020. Jung Saet Byeol is 4th dimensional character who is ahead of time.

2. Kim Sun Young: the best ahjumma, hands down. No need to doubt her acting.

3. Eum Moon Suk: the dude you are looking forward to see if things get boring or in any scenes without SaetByul

4. Ji Chang Wook: no other male leads like him, he is effortless and makes it relaxing to watch him act. He is natural

JoyfulLove Dec 12 2021 1:57 am At first, I was hesitant to watch this because the age gap between the leads bothers me, though I'm a fan of KYJ and I like JCW as an actor it takes me at least mid-year of 2021 to finally give it a try to watch. And I was so surprised that the story is good and I enjoyed it very much. Both had great chemistry and excellent acting skills. I laughed, I cried, I got pissed/annoyed, and I fell in love while watching the drama. KYJ character Jung Saetbyul is one of my favorite roles she has ever played.

There are a lot of things I feel they are rushing the story I honestly want to see the Bullies of Sol-Bin getting arrested or being put on the prison. Also I keep waiting for the moment where Dae Hyun see or caught Yeon Joo being Shallow and Embarass because of his status in life. Like what happened with both of their Mothers in the last episode, for a moment I taught Dae Hyun Mom will throw a water on Yeon Joo mother it been priceless if it happened. Also what happened to Dae Hyun sister???

After starting the first episode this drama reflects people’s lives in different genre not only high school wise. It’s really fun especially on the scenes of Ji Chang Wood and Kim You Jung together. JCW is amazing that he can creates the character of Dae Hyun in various moods and he can nail them. Specially he can blend the amused mood in DAE Hyun character perfectly. He’s so brilliant. Actually he should get award on this role.

Issues and controversy arises during BR airing but those issues are seen only at the first two episode i guess, but it seems people are too focused on that. The only thing that made me not drop this drama is for Kim YooJung (she shines brightly when she acts) and her bratty little sister's journey to being an idol, other than that is a meh.

Also Daehyun gf is really annoying, i love the actress played the character really well. She is really selfish but didnt know that she is selfish

kpopandgrime Mar 15 2021 10:06 pm One of the few dramas that I have mixed feelings about; usually I love most kdramas; only 2 or 3 I dropped completely. But this one is a difficult one to review because its just alright. Nothing special.

I completed all 16 EP and the only thing I really enjoyed was the cast. Both Ji Chang Wook and Kim You Jung were phenomenal; their chemistry was out of this world and I would love to see them team up again on a better project. For a drama to get a 9/10 or 10/10 the plot has to be of high standard and that was lacking tremendously. So for that reason this drama gets a 6/10 from me.

There is no wayyyy I would recommend this to anyone, I'm being very critical but it has to be done. It is what it is !!!!!

Peng Feb 26 2021 7:17 am I enjoyed the drama. You have to watch it so you can appreciate it more. Saet Byul and Dae Hyun has strong chemistry even without a proper kissing scene. Their presence together is enough. And this is a family drama that will touched your heart. No grand storyline but a realistic slice of life and comical portrayal in terms of doing action scenes. I recommend it.

After the disastrous Melting me Softly, he does Backstreet Rookie but is not up to the great style and true acting skills of Suspicious Partner with Nam Ji Hyun, he shone in that and they were perfect, so were the supporting cast, love Choi Tae. He seems to be playing with kids in B R, I’m sure he had fun. He needs something to get his teeth into again. This one was a romp.

I completely fell in love with the both of them, they are such great actors, that even tho the story plot itself isn't exactly something special, they were able to give justice with the characters they portrayed. One thing I really like is the family scenes, I cried a lot on Saetbyul and Daehyun's mom scene when SB was in the hospital,, and the most disappointing (besides the CA guy) is how the main leads great chemistry, despite the age gap, was completey wasted. I'm really really so upset with the lack of romance,, and franky I'm more excited to see the behind the scenes because of the casts cute interactions~ Anyway, hoping in the future for JCW and KYJ to have another drama again, preferably a historical or melodrama... My overall rating for Backstreet Rookie is 7/10, it's something that I would enjoy watching by myself, but not so much with others because of how cliche and chessy it is

You see this drama has been my guilty pleasure every week. I never thought that I'd be attached to it because I'm just an ordinary fan trying to get through life through kdramas. Backstreet Rookie gives me the right amount of love, humor, action and great value for my family in every episode! :) The plot and the characters are unique in every way and even though the plot is not as complicated and mysterious just like other dramas, the charm and sincerity of the characters paved the way for people like me to enjoy. All characters blended well together. Kudos to every one behind the scenes you guys have created something that I will always look back and remember for the rest of my life :) Thank you for making a masterpiece! ❤ You made my 8 weeks memorable and cheerful!

Elena Aug 10 2020 1:29 am I have mixed feelings about this drama. I totally love Chang Wook, but never liked You Jung. And yet I decided to give it a chance.

It had some funny parts, especially all those references, but yet sometimes was sooo boring.

Dae Hyun being loyal to Yeon Joo was very believable. But they broke up, and suddenly Dae Hyun has feeling for Saet Byul. All his actions since this point were kind of cringy. Wasn't believable at all that he likes now Saet Byul. And I don't talk about his acting, but story point wise. I get the idea that Saet Byul was always there for him, but this was not well executed. Look for example at Itaewon Class, similar story, and yet more convincible. Maybe it happened like this because Backstreet Rookie, though it had deep meaning, was executed like an rom-com, and make it feel like it lacks depth.

Another thing I didn't like, an this happens in all romantic dramas is the cliches. Like they meet in childhood, and then they meet again, or she goes missing in last ep. I wonder why all romantic dramas have such kind of cliches. This was one of the reasons I gave up on romantic dramas, so tired of those cliches. Why can't they just come up with something different?

The storyline is cute and funny. Not a bad watch but the ending was just a little disappointing... :) they could have done better.

And I finished it for a lot of reasons. If you want a sweet and feel-good romantic comedy, I wouldn't particularly recommend this to you. Sure there are cute romantic scenes and really funny moments every now and then, but it also showed the reality of workplace struggles, bullies, socio-economic differences, and married life decades after the honeymoon phase. Honestly, there were times that this drama pissed me off because I just wanted to be able to sit down and enjoy a light drama after a long and tiring day, but I'd also say that I was also able to enjoy the drama because of it's story and characters (except Dae-hyun's dad and Yeon-joo's mom I guess).

The chemistry between the leads actors really good despite the slow progress of romance really give a natural flow like in real life and the family financial issues has even describe well as how the higher level of society will treat the lower level of society. The character of Dae Hyun's GF really shown how one will regret their true love that care for them and keep on trying back but some people will be upset and there's no second chance. Honestly, one should watch this but don't expect cliche rom-com that filled with cheesy line more. 10/10 for this drama. besides, if others say different from what I said, it is my POV and I respect others. just don't hate the actor and actress rather appreciate their hard work and understand the storyline.

Super super cute. Every single minute will make you smile. Both the actors you can tell are slowly falling more and more in love with each other. And Both the actors are just so simple and just so nice. Sometimes rather than the harsh perfect characters, its just refreshing to see people with less expectations from life and just happy in what they are. Not expecting much and just know how to stay happy. A simple story of a simple girl and a simple guy. I just watched 2 episodes and I am thoroughly enjoying every single bit of it.

The casts acting super good, they power of having very good casts and the power of having good script writers. This is more sclice of life instead a romcom drama, slice of life drama that maybe i am waiting from kdrama.land for hundred years lol. The story that everyone can relate. About how hard life is. They not concern about romamnce but they more into family issue. Yes..this is 1st romance drama from PDnim. But seems he cut off the romance aspect and more focused on family aspects. Which is good.

But i am hungry for the development relationship between the leads. If in ordinary drama..we had kiss scenes in episode 9-10.but we already passed those episode. We dont see sny kiss scenea yet..the real kiss. I hope it would happen in episode 13.

The previews ...next episode..daehyun will work at GS company again???? I hope it will end and wrapt everything about their financial issues..everything. i want them to be successfullin their life. So people dont underestimate them anymore.

In fact, it is better than other romantic comedy drama because the leads and supporting actors are doing great on their perfomances. This is one of those dramas that you won't judge based on the story. (forget the storyline and cliche lines) The story about a convenience store is a "genius concept". No one would ever think that a drama can focus on such a place.(except for the writer of this series tho)

I must say this is a such a refreshing series after watching tragic kdramas that have sad endings. I give this drama 86/100

Storyline is so silly and leaning towards being slapstick that it is frustrating to watch. Chemistry should come out naturally instead of being forced. I look forward to JCWs future projects he being a good actor. KYJ is still young and hopefully in time will improve. In my opinion Its not about popularity but rather being good actors with good storyline that makes a difference.

But I agree with people saying it’s kind of draggy. There’s some several scene that I don’t really know the significance is. Seems like it was just a filler for one hour episode. Origins Jul 19 2020 1:11 pm JCW is great in portraying his character! Dae-Hyun is sincere, devoted in love, pure, innocent, and upright. He’s not clingy or stupid or annoying at all. I guess I have some similarities with Choi Dae-Hyun’s personalities, so that’s why I can relate to him and appreciate his goodness. If you don’t have anything in common with this pure human beings, I guess you can’t understand him. This role is not glamorous or cool, but he’s just a normal boy-next-door who has his own charms. I laughed and cried many times (episode 10) when watching it. Backstreet Rookie is an unique and entertaining drama that is fun to watch! It’s totally my cup of tea. I enjoy it very much.

This is such an interesting, fun drama to watch. There’s a good distinction of characters. You learn about about priorities... the injustices in daily life... and the issues we don’t like to address... and most importantly, how important laughter is...

The acting is also very good.. making the audience cry is one thing... but making them laugh is another and Ji chang Wook and kim yoo jung are excellent at both. The cinematography is also worth commending... and all the quirks in each scene..

I look forward to this drama every day. I’m living a very sad life right now and I find so much positivity and encouragement from this drama.

They showcase a very cute sibling-like relationship instead.. Its already 6 eps but theres nothing deep to look forward to bout the story.. However its just nice, light and stress-free to watch..

They really did a good job executing their characters and love their performances. I love this drama and totally recommend; its funny, light and fresh. I know its not for everyone but atleast give it a go because its really funny and I believe it is worth watching. Plus I love the chemistry between the two leads, they really compliment each other. As I’ve seen also on their bts, they are really comfortable to each other and having lots of fun. I don’t understand why so many people criticising this drama, and tend to judge it on the first few episodes, I understand regarding Dalsik role and I agree with some scene it might not be comfortable to some people to watch but I believe the producer can make some changes regarding on his role. But to spread bad report and worst to cancel it just because they dont like it, its not fair, because there is actually people who love this drama and looking forward to it, not because we dont have a value or no moral but we do enjoy the story and appreciate all the efforts the artists gave in and we look on the positive sides. If you dont like the drama then thats okay because I know this drama is not for everyone, same goes for the rest of the kdrama. Overall, I really enjoyed it and I cannot wait for the upcoming episodes and how the story will unfold. Totally recommend this drama and its worth watching ??❤️

jk Jul 04 2020 1:30 am i love ji changwook so much and i love him in this. its only on ep. 5 so i think people need to just wait. every drama has a beggining where the couple isnt together yet! we just have to wait. theres are some scenes that are too much whenever Dalsik is in it. but other than him, i like it. i think alot of people dont even realize the whole point of the drama or the actual story behind it to be judging. she is supposed to be young and its okay that he hasnt realized his love for her yet. nowadays its soo normal for a big age gap. ive seen people marry or date with like 15 years apart. not to mention this is a drama! i love changwook and i love yoojung, i think they are both amazing at their job and i think people should just wait and see for the best. i think the writers should immediately fix Dalsik’s scenes to be better and change his character. and i think Daehyun is slowly realizing him and his gf wont work out. so im hoping they will slowly start to get together with Saetbyul. i really hope the drama gets better and works out for the best. i want to see character development and i want to see our beautiful couple together! please work on the scenes and make our couples happy! fighting Changwook & Yoojung!!? i really hope this drama continues in a good way and changes for the best!! i really love Changwook for giving himself this chance to try something different as an actor, i am so proud of him. he is doing amazing!!!

Anon Jul 03 2020 10:12 pm Wow! Where to start. The blatant and disgusting racism in this drama has me nauseated. Who is writing this junk, a twelve year old? Honestly the script is so badly written. Everything is disjointed as if the writer has too many ideas and is trying to cram as many of them in an episode as possible without considering the flow of ideas. Everything seems superficial. Friendships, family relationships, business relationships. There is no depth in any of the characters. It seems the actors are trying there best to give their characters some dimension, but the scripting seems to be thwarting their efforts. Nothing makes sense in this drama. Just a whole lot of loose strings that don't seem to tie together well. If this was a culinary dish I would throw it in the garbage can and fire the cook!

Felt like everything that happen could have been squeezed into the first two episodes. I'm all for Yoojung kicking butts. Can't wait to see more of Solbin too. Sister power.

Its not cute but disgusting and something a parent will not be proud of. Corncrow hair style is part of Jamaican culture so there is a lack of sensitivity here. JCWs acting is very good and natural. KYU tends to overact and lacks fluidity but with experience overtime for sure she will improve. Overall - saving grace is JCWs acting. Storyline - sensitivities not well thought of by the producers. Not for family but parental guidance needed so values can be pointed out to younger members of the family.

The best part is some movie and drama references such as the Pulp Fiction dance scene and Fiery Priest (the Thai dude and the bully). They were reenacting their roles from previous series, was it from Priest? I can't remember. This series is so funny and the cast are really eye-candies. Looking forward to the next episode!

Don’t forget she’s rich, rich prefer to marry within their own to carry wealth, and fear of others using/marrying them for their money. If I was her I would just tell him the truth because I don’t see them working out. @Joey the dread character is not really problematic besides his hair at the moment. So far there’s no caricature bob Marley voice from him and overly Jamaican music and etc. Some people tried to say he was doing blackface but nope dude is the same skin color he was in dramas before. Some people have been watching too many Koreans with whiter foundation than their face and forget their are darker Koreans.

Choi Dae Hyun's friend.. i did love him on Fiery Priest and here as well but his character is a bit.. inappropriate? idk for me, it is. But he's still funny, ever since on Fiery Priest i really find him funny although he's not that funny here in Backstreet Rookie. And The Fiery Priest scenes like Yohan, Songsak, etc it's really funny how they include it and I'm so glad they did put it! And!! The Cameos!!

However, after passing that it got interesting and FUNNY! I don't understand why people are so concerned with the fact that the story was taken from an Adult Webtoon! I could totally sit down with my family and watch this, including my 13-year-old sister. As for the comments about the "Low Align" camera shots of SB's younger sister - geez.... Com'on we've seen worse in older times.

I recommend this show :)

There are so many lessons in the drama but some people pay attention to their mistakes, bruh!

"Truth" -It was on it. The truth that everyone get suspicious, without knowing the everything, I felt that. -Jung Saet Byul "Kindhearted" -Even if you we're in a desperate situation, you still can't afford to ignore those who need help. -Choi Dae Hyun "Being strong even though everyone misunderstood it"

I Love all about this drama! Hope for higher ratings! I love how YooJung portray Saet Byul's character like gosh! She was only on her 20, yet she nailed it! She was randomly paired with ajjushis but still, the chemistry's there. She evolves every character she plays, from the prince's wife at Moon Embracing The Sun, she's a smart and kindhearted queen, and so as Angry Mom, May Queen, LITM, CWPFN, and now. Love her so much like I could do something crazy. Fighting!

When she did “Clean with Passion for Now,” she got so much stupid BS for playing the love interest of Jang Sun-Gyeol played by Yoon Kyun-sang who is more than 10 years older than her...

Then she turned around, came back and did it all over again in this drama, “Backstreet Rookie.” This time with Ji Chang-wook as his future love interest. Who is also, by the way, more than 10 years older than her.

I have to admire that tremendously talented young actress... She opposes the status quo with class and finesse...

nylede Jun 20 2020 10:57 pm people easily criticized the drama because of the first episode...they just looked at the surfaced and just ignore the depth of its intention...the show just showed one of the realistic situation in this present world, but judging it through the surface only made them the worst critic...lessons do not come from a perfect start, so probably the backstreet rookie team just served as the possible cause, rather than serving us a perfect start, to realized some fruitful lessons in the end....Its 'their' mind that just jumps into conclusion and thinks sinfull stuff, its 'them' who thinks the worsts...

Because i can tell Ji Changwook more relax with his acting. I mean who hate this drama, maybe you can choose good sentences to expressing your heart contents.

The staff, the producer, the actors and actresses tried their best to explore their characters and surely writing a script isn't easy. Critics are always open, but they are human too, they do need supports, they do need critics to build their spirit to continue making a better drama. Think carefully before you write, not many people could accept what you say. No offense.

He was offered many good works such as LUCA, the man from star city, or others not mentioned in the article, but he chose light dramas such as melting me shoftly and backstreet rookie. I respect his decision to choose Romcom for now, because he said in action he was very tired mentally and physically, he had been hurt (minor injury) too when healer and K2. But thankfully finally Jichang Wook didn't really avoid the action genre. he will star in the action film later this year. Ah I miss him in an action drama! I am support him for this drama

Many people disliked the goblin age gap bw leads in goblin. So before asking why people have a problem with the age gap here if they didnt have a problem with those dramas...please come out of whatever rock you've been living under.

Tehy are so conservative. There will be some cons about..HS bad ass girl kissing a mature man on the street. But they cant skip the full webtoon right..that is one of important scenes that make Dae dislikes byul Ianyway put aside korean taste, their market target is overseas because the sponsor is alao amerivan TV channel right .. aha love rhis.! The directing so amazing!! Cinematography is pro!! The comedic animation, the actor everynone good skill!!

Well, now I don’t care anymore because the first episode of Backstreet Rookie has been released, and it is soooo good!!! I love it, and I don’t care whatever other people think about it, or if it has good ratings or not. It’s a kind of drama that makes you want to rewatch and eager for the next episodes to come. KYJ, JCW and other casts’ acting is right on the money. I’m impressed with the whole quality of the 1st episode so far. It might not perfect for everyone’s taste, but it’s totally awesome for me!

If it’s not a promising drama, nobody will buy it that quick and upfront like that. His previous drama MMS did not have the same enthusiastic acquirement in the beginning like Backstreet Rookie. The teaser is fun, unique, and very different from other dramas. Does it the same like Suspicious Partner, The K2, Melting Me Softly, or Healer to you? Definitely not the same. Please don’t stereotype it if you don’t have a chance to see the whole story yet. The webtoon it is based on has quite interesting story, and I can guarantee with you that it’s totally different from any other projects that JCW had before.

She was born on Sep 22, 1999 and JCW was born on July 5, 1987. He’s just older than her 12 years old. No big deal! Yeah, the teaser looks interesting and comical, making me feel so excite for the drama. I think it will be very popular. So far I’m impressed with the directing and cast. The storyline I read on the webtoon is good too, but I heard they will make a lot of change. Saet-Byeol character in the webtoon always wears shorts, revealing clothes but they don’t adapt the same style into the drama; otherwise the drama can be only for older teens and above. LOL

I was thinking the same for kyj since her previous drama was also romance and it didn't do well either but I've realised she's young so she has so many chances to pick different genres and characters for her next dramas!

If you know anything about Wookie & this webtoon, the casting is very good as they are the same age as the characters they will portray & JCW is just a big kid, he never acts his age! Actors should stand out on whatever role they chose, regardless of the drama plot.

Another point, the actress is not match with him bcoz of the age gap? Really? You should have done some research first before commenting. That is the requirement in this drama! And Kim Yoo Jung acting is great and amazing despite her age. Not to mention her pretty face.

As a fan, rather than giving him thoughts to worry about, you should have just support him and cheer him up. Just a piece of advice.

If only wokkie works with this director with the previous work were like wisper, the piery priest, others..that will be an amazing work. That kind of drama jo chang wook needs now to move on from action drama.
