"Life is Beautiful" tells the story of a blended family who lives on Jeju Island.

Byung-Tae's mother (Kim Yong-Rim) & father (Choi Jung-Hun) are the first generation.

Kim Min-Jae (Kim Hae-Sook), Yang Byung-Tae (Kim Young-Chul), Yang Byung-Joon (Kim Sang-Joong), & Jo Ah-Ra (Jang Mi-Hie) are the second generation.

Amanda Aug 31 2025 5:16 pm Every character and I mean Every One Of Them in this drama was annoying and got on my last nerve except the two male leads.

For that reason it was hard to watch. I found myself screaming into the tv for every ep. The two male leads kept me watching wanting to see what the ending would be.. if not for that I would've dropped it on the forth ep.

TimsPrinting Dec 31 2021 8:48 am I found this one worth watching. Not going to get into any spoilers etc. Would just like to put out into the universe. If networks are not willing to show these TV shows, movies, and programs in re-runs on streaming platforms. They should give us the consumer a chance to be able to purchase a DVD/ or BluRay set for our own collections. There are a lot of great gems that have disappeared and you only see a snippet of a scene or a trailer on Youtube.

Kdrama Sep 13 2018 1:29 am Enjoying the drama! I'm typically leary of longer family dramas because of the familiar monotonous themes, but the writing in the drama did the storyline well! I pretty much enjoyed all of the characters except for Kyungsoo and Taesub's scenes. Although I applaud the writer for taking on what would have been a controversial subject at that time, I found KS and TS's interaction quite boring and repetitive. Somehow it didn't feel quite believable. The characters seemed to rotely and robotical carry out their scenes--although I did enjoy Taesubs interactions with the family. I would have enjoyed seeing him navigate the challenge of his connection to Chaeyoung and then perhaps confront relationship with Kyungsoo over time. My favorite storyline however was the Big Uncle and the Chief Director!

lrt Sep 25 2017 5:21 pm Love love love this drama. I almost stopped watching because the first few episodes focused on the grandparents...but push through, it's quite the ride. Could not get enough of CEO/Director relationship and the squawking Yang Byung-Kil brother became the center of attraction and reason- "should my first name be quiet?". Great family drama that paces itself for the 60+episodes.

dido Mar 19 2017 4:48 pm the story was okay..it's too long, i got bored..i only continue watching it because the setting was jeju city..i wasn't able to roam the island because the people i was intouched with there especially the drivers & taxi drivers were not tourist friendly..so i really frustrated..

JJ Aug 23 2015 11:32 am i just finished this drama & so glad it's a happy ending! song chang & lee sang woo were so cute together acting their roles as gay couple so well & impressive at that! i just wished they have move scenes in this drama & if they ever have a season 2 i hope the writer/s will mainly focus on these two characters are they super lovable! i didn't even mind that it's lengthy but worth it! taesub/kyungsoo's love for each other is unconditional & i'm going to miss watching them! their chemistry in this drama is indescribable! i highly recommend this drama for those who haven't seen it! it was tasteful & the writers just left it to your imagination, there's no sex scenes they simply hug each other most times, i heard they cut the kiss scene w/c i have no problem with that! it's best to leave it to the viewers' imagination! thanks to those involved in this drama esp Song chang eui & Lee sang woo they're both excellent actors!

agasshi Aug 19 2015 10:00 pm the story of taesub & kyung soo are my favorite scenes in this drama, they're so sweet together & really in love w/each other! i also admire taesub's family they're very supportive of him & kyungsoo unlike the latter's mother! two thumbs up waaay up! i luv the chemistry of song chang ui & lee sang woo, i heard that after this drama they became good friends in real life! it's no surprise they're both good actors & a drama this lengthy i'm sure you tend to be close with your colleagues! congrats to all who participated in this drama esp the two leads Song & Lee!

blanx Aug 18 2015 12:12 am luv this drama! song chang ui & lee sang woo were topnotch actors who played their role so well & natural! altho i hvnt finished watching this as i just started a week ago, i'm hooked already; my favorite scenes wld be taesub/kyungsoo coz their story is so sweet you somehow forget you're watching a couple of same gender! first time i've watched a gay story & i must say i'm not disappointed at all! i highly recommend this drama & altho it's a lengthy one, it's worth it! 2 thumbs up & kudos to all who acted in this drama!

hapiheart Aug 18 2015 12:04 am I'm just on epis 43 of this drama & i must admit the only reason i watched it is because of my favorite actor Song chang ui who has been amazingly a great actor in Golden Bride & others! at first i was hesitant in watching this because i heard it's about a gay couple & this is the first time i've watched a drama of this genre but am i glad i am watching it because of the story of taesub & kyung soo - they really are the heart of this drama & while watching them i somehow forget that they're the same gender because of how they love each other in spite of the circumstances surrounding their loved ones! i admire taesub's family & of all his stepmom -- don't you wish most if not all stepmoms would be like her? she was very supportive as well as the other members (excluding his youngest uncle) of taesub unlike kyung soo's mother! often times i clamored for more taesub/kyung soo's scenes & skipped some scenes such as the eldest dtr & her husband & wished there's more of taesub/kyungsoo scenes in this drama! i can't wait to finish this & hope it's a happy ending for taesub/kyungsoo! they really love each other unconditionally! Kudos to Song chang ui & Lee sang woo for their excellent performance! it must not be easy for these actors to play their roles i'm sure but they acted so naturally! I shall be back after i finish watching this wonderful love story of taesub & kyungsoo! 2 thumbs up waaay up & kudos to the writer/director & crew and all the stars who were great in their own roles!

Florentina Aug 17 2015 5:09 pm I really love this drama. The Cast and Team did a great job. I watched this last year and I'm planning to re-watch it on Viki after finishing the drama I'm currently watching called "Heard it through the gravevine".

Tae Sub and Kyung Soo storyline really moved me. Like ever since I watch the US version of Queer as Folk and Brendan and Ste (of Hollyoaks) storyline. It's been difficult to find a LGBT series that as a realistic love story. I'm a huge kdrama fan and coming across this just makes me love kdrama much more to be honest.

Also like Miss Bee (comment bellow me) mentioned "Chris and Steve" comment moved me too. I hope you lads are happy wherever you are.

And how I wish the producers, writers and directors of this drama can read this comments so they can know a lot of people appreciate their work. Cause I read somewhere that there was a huge backlash when the drama aired.

I really wish there were more dramas like this. *sighs*

alper Aug 13 2015 8:32 am i'm now on epis 20 of this drama & it made me cry buckets! so touching scenes between tae sub & his parents! i don't want to spoil this for anyone who hasn't seen it but i highly recommend this drama! no wonder song chang ui won in this drama series he was superb in his acting as always! such a sad episode & i can't wait to see the rest of this drama! 2 thumbs up & 5 stars for me!

I've not seen this series. Was reading about it because 2 of the actors are in other series I have watched since the spring.

I was moved to tears by the 2010 comment by "Chris" (in the early fall), and by the 2013 comment by Angel (Steve).

That's all I have to say. No other words in me.

If the series becomes available on Netflix, I will watch it.

ggreau Aug 09 2014 11:18 pm I think that LIB was the best portray of gay characters in any thing I have seen. I have seen many. It really showed honestly what the situation in South Korea is about. Pity the church scene was cut though. Be proud of this drama. It will help others to be more open. I remember watching in 1972 old a Soap Opera drama (Number 96) in Australian. It lasted 6 years with only 4 of the original cast still in the drama at the end. One of which was the Gay solicitor whom lived openly in the apartment block with his partner. They treated the person as an honest and loving person and friendly, similar to Tae sub and Kyung soo! It helped pave the way for more open and honest life for gay people. Hopefully more like LIB will help in Korea.

Deeva Jul 30 2014 12:22 pm I was really disappointed with Lee Sang Yoon's storyline or lack there of. There was a lot of opportunity wasted, and he was the only one in the drama who didn't have any. His love story was barely luke warm and they really shouldn't have even bothered. It's funny that him and Nam Sang Mi started dating in real life, it certainly was because of the romance between their characters.

Angel (Steve) Apr 03 2013 2:13 am I am 65 years old and had been in Australia for past 36 years. I left Philippines when I was 29 years old hoping to live life the way I wanted. I can relate to Song Chan Ui's character (Tae Sub), but my deep cultural background and society's blatant discrimination, forced me to live a life as dictated by the majority.

I got married at 31, divorced after 10 years, been single parent of my 2 children for nearly a decade and remarried at age 50. Before then, like Tae Sub, I had an Australian friend (very much like Kyung Soo). However, we ended our 5 years friendship after realizing that family and society could easily ruin our life if we continue. We didn't have sexual relationship, mostly embracing and kisses on couple of occassions. He had been married since then, also with 2 grown up kids. Although we still live in the same city, the last time we met was in 1983. We opted not to meet forever to ease the pain.

I cried everytime I watched all the episodes of this Korean TV series. It was done extremely well. It's been over a year since I saw these series in Youtube and DailyMotion, but for almost daily I never miss watching at least one or two episodes with it's background music. The acting of all the actors were superb. Of course, kudos to Song Chai Ui and Lee Sang Woo in performing the roles of TaeSub and Kyung Soo. It was so real. I always remember their faces vividly, not only in my mind but also in my heart. I thank them for playing the roles and I wish them well.

When I left Philippines in 1977, I never met any Koreans, but recently there are approximately 150,000 Koreans living in the country and millions as visiting tourists. This tv series caused me to love not only the Koreans but also their culture. One of these days I want to visit their country and see for myself the beautiful country.

I thank the Director: Jung Eul-Young & Writer: Kim Soo-Hyun for their excellent work and courage in showing such wonderful show, uncertain of it's success in very conservative Korean society.

I had my choice then, yet I let society dictates the kind of life I should have. I am satisfied with my life, though my only regrets is not able to share life with the person I loved. For the new & young generations, I suggest that you consider yourself first and foremost because LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL spending life with someone you truly love.

Mij Feb 27 2013 8:13 am Oh my goodness! This is actually the most unique and totally exceptional series of all Asian Drama. I came across this drama on Youtube and by reading the viewers comments, my curiosity pops out instantly that I found myself absolutely attached to it. Honestly, I keep on repeating it during my free time because it inspires me completely. True enough that Love really knows no boundary and it is blind. Love definitely is understanding and accepting a person unconditionally. Tae Sub and Kyung Soo made it well perfectly. It's as if I am watching a real life couple. Life is a great combination of sadness and happiness. You decide how to handle it but don't let sadness outnumber happiness. Live your life the way you want it to be so long as you don't hurt anyone because after all you will be damned if you don't and you will be damned if you do.

Life is Beautiful is indeed a brilliant work of art! Most specifically the story between Tae Sub and Kyung Soo. At first, I thought it would go like a suicide that brings death; a typical tragic story. But then, it brought a different dimensions of hope, strength, love, and inspiration to the 'needy' nowadays. Love was defined intimately out of flesh. The representation is so realistic and sensible! Their story was not too flamboyant nor too dull. It's on a certain level that even after watching them, you'll want to see more and more of it! It's like all you see now is a positive outlook! Indeed, LOVE doesn't have any exclusivity. That LOVE doesn't follow any norms nor rules that our society dictates us of what is known to be as 'normal'.

Ive also learned some family values in korea. Im no. Fan now of kyung soo and tae sub love team, i hope that there will be another beautiful life that i will watch, same character and same cast. I really want to see another gay themed korean drama that the gay couple will be Lee Sang Woo and Song Chang Ui. i will miss you both. :(

I hope they will make Life is Beautiful 2 or they will make the different story with the same actor.

I have seen lots of them but I find this series one of the most impressive - from the direction down to technical aspects. Each of the characters gave full justice to their roles, the cinematography is superb and the story itself was simply interesting, I highly commend Director: Jung Eul-Young & Writer: Kim Soo-Hyun for their excellent work.

Lee Sang Woo & Song Chang-Ui portrayed their characters with natural perfection. I have watched this three times already and I am hoping there will be a second part of this series. My sincere congratulations to SBS!

shivy Jul 05 2012 3:59 am I had recently come across this series and wish that i had seen this earlier. I had a friend who struggled with his sexuality and a lot of people ostracised him when they found out that he was gay.

He couldnt take the criticisms anymore and committed suicide.Though i tried to be there for him, I never fully understood what he may have gone through but seeing this show made me realise how alone he must have felt. I just wish he could have seen this and maybe this could have given him strength to fight against the world. There is nothing wrong with being homosexual. You fall in love with a person NOT their gender.

I support this show and those who choose to love freely despite being shunned by the rigid rules of our world today.

Each time I see one of them cry because they have to go through all the difficulties just to be together it really breaks my heart and I can't help but cry! Song Chang Ui and Lee Sang Woo thank you so much for playing the parts of taesub and kyungsoo, you both perfectly fit the role and I can even feel all the emotions in your acting. I guess this series will definitely bring change to my life, thank you for the memories I will definitely bring them with me forever and whenever I'll be faced with difficulties I'll always get strength from Taesub and Kyungsoo for how they try so hard and do their best just to be together even though how hard it is.

it already begins in the 1st episode! there is no first meeting or something like that. they already know each other for some time and they are already a couple. the first time you see them together is after Taesub broke up with his girlfriend.

zhia_aala Jul 23 2011 9:54 am Life is Beautiful is very beautiful meaning....I'm not a korean drama fanatic, but I admit after watching 2 episode I've fallen and addicted to it.....this is the 2nd korean family drama that I fallen addicted after "High Kick Through The Roof" (also SBS product)....this drama really given a new life and prospective of korean drama....because the usual korean family drama are so stuck-up and closed mindset...... I'm fallen to this drama not only because of Lee sang Woo, Song Chang Ui and Lee San Yoon, but the story line are so touching, realistic and apprehended every each problem so beautifully....Life is Beautiful is actually a true story of a life, the everyday life that we have to face it and overcome with..... Congrats to the producer, actor and actress also all crew for making this beautiful drama....don't stop here, please produce many many many more precious drama in the future....we need a korean family drama that is out of the box!!!!!! The only regret is I couldn't fined any web to download this drama, so I can watch it again and again in the future...like I did to the "High Kick To The Roof".......and btw I really love the ending of every episode which is falling is a must...he he he........

Thank you very, very, very, very, very much for producing this very wonderful series. Finally, here is a series worth watching, worth chasing after. Unlike what others have said about the pace of story, I think that the pace is absolutely fine. Great job!

Dear Kim Su-hyun, Thank you for having the guts to pen down and create such beautiful characters. I love Kim Min-Jae, Tae-sub's mother. Because of her character, I learned how to appreciate my mother more. I see so much of my mother inside Min-Jae, so much strength and persistence. Sometimes in the chase of living, I forget to thank my mother. But because of this character, I learned to slow down and thank my mother. The scenes when she fought so hard for Tae Sub and when she hugged Kyung Soo, oh, they made my heart cry in joy, thankfulness and sadness. She is such a great character.

Thank you also for creating Tae Sub. Every word that he has said in the series, every single one of them were exactly what I wanted to say to the world. Yes, I am gay, and there are times when I wanted to do what Tae Sub said : March down the hall with a huge hailer and screamed I am gay. There have been times when I feel extremely, painfully lonely. And everyday (even today) I am dying a little bit, because it's impossible to come out to the people around my life. That is why I could identify so much with Tae Sub. Oh, the times when I wept while seeing Tae Sub being so authentic and strong, in the midst of fear and rejection.

Thank you for creating Kyung Soo too. I wish one day I can be like Tae Sub, meeting a man so strong-willed and firm like Kyung Soo. I will continue to pray and pray that one day I'll meet someone like him. Sometimes I do tell myself that such romance is only possible in movies and series. For two people like Tae Sub and Kyung Soo to meet each other at a plane and come together and fall in love -- ah, that's so impossible in reality. But there's a very small part that has not given up on love and hope. That part of me still hopes every single day and moment that I will meet someone like that. Though everyday I die a little bit, I hope that part of me doesn't die.

Overall, dear Kim Su-hyun, thank you for creating this story. I am in the midst of watching the entire series the second time. Thank you so much for bringing them to life, and for insisting that there has to be a scene for Tae Sub and Kyung Soo to pledge their love for each other. Even though it was not at a church, the garden is fine enough. Thank you so, so much. That small hope I have is shining a little brighter now.

Dear Song Chang-Ui, Thank you for being so bold to act as Tae Sub. It must have not been easy, but thank you for bringing this character to life. You embodied Tae Sub with such brilliance I don't think anybody else could have made it so real (and painful for me, because I am exactly like Tae Sub, minus the introverted part). I know that you yourself are not comfortable with homosexuality personally, as I've read in a few interviews. But your willingness to play such a character even when it is not inline with your personal beliefs, and yet doing it so beautifully, you just amaze me, Chang-Ui. You just amaze me. Thank you so much for that courage. You well deserved the award. Please do not stop acting and being awesome. I look forward to seeing more of your movies/series.

Dear Kim Hae-Suk, Thank you for playing the character of the mother so, so well. I wish my mother would be as accepting like you. But that aside, your character reminded me of my mother - how she will not stop to fight for her children, how she will nags because of her love and concern for her children, how she will go the extra mile for the family and her children. Thank you for showing the strength and braveness of a real, strong mother. The scenes when your character accepted Tae Sub and his sexual orientation, and when your character hugged Kyung Soo, those made me weep. You played your character really well. Thank you so much.

To everyone in the "Life is Beautiful" team, Thank you once again. I don't know what else to say but thank you. I believe this movie has made an impact in people like me. Who knows -- life may have been changed for the better, of course. Thank you so much for the smiles that you've put on my face when all I could was be sad. Thank you also for working together to produce a gay story that wasn't filled with drugs and sex. Thank you for showing a warm-hearted, love-filled series. If there is another similar story, I will definitely want to watch it. That's my promise as a fan to all of you!

Bleachaddict Feb 18 2011 9:18 pm I didn't finish it yet : I'm a the 20th episode ! And I must say that this is a wonderful drama ! The relation KyungSoo-Taesub is formidably written and it presents absolutely everything that is useful to change public opinion's mind. I don't say it's the only good point in this drama but, oh my god, I have never seen a TV show treating the subject this good. When US series make homosexuality a trend, this show talks about ALL the problems that have to be overcome during a coming out and all. REALLY touching story. It's fascinating that a show can be that close to human feelings !

Congrats to all the persons involved in this show.

I really recommend it !

delilah Dec 30 2010 4:28 pm KI is right. It did use to tell people of their social class. I'm Korean and i have very pale skin. It's one of my most favorite things about myself. It has nothing to do with race but because this idea has been popular for a very long time, it has been stuck in our mind for so long. It's hard to change our thinking of wanting dark skin especially for me. So Chris, don't worry. We have nothing against darker skin people.

In Korea historically darker skin people were field workers / common laborers who worked in the sun mostly and because of that had darker skin. They made low wages and were part of the lower class. This was especially true on Jeju island (where the drama is based) and the area's primary economic industries being based on agriculture and fishing - (especially woman laborers who commonly worked as divers off of the coast). So whiter skin were identified with higher class / elites who were not feild laborers. At least that is my understanding on why whiter skin is preferred by most Koreans. There isn't anything "racist" in the whiter skin appeal in the show - that traditional thought is based on economics "darker skin Koreans = field laborers who get darker skin by working in the sun and made little money and because of this were part of the lower class"

@Autumn the coming out epi is epi 20 i think. Very touching scene! It's nice to read all the comments here. Ever since youtube has taken down all the videos of LIB, it's been hard to find a platform where people can exchange views and feelings about the drama freely and easily.

maybe someone who knows korean could write in to the production team or to the tv station about the praises and the acclaim the show had received globally. :)

Yeah, no Cho Rong's comment about not wanting her skin dark isn't at all a slight towards other people of color. In Asia, whiter and translucent skin is a desirable beauty, opposite to American women that love to tan. Also, in Asian history, women of the working class were known to have darker skin, while women higher up had pale skin. So it's been in the Asian beauty mentality for a long time. It's probably quite different for Asian women in living in countries beside Asia though. The younger generations in US mostly like to be tanner.

"Life is Beautiful" has all the elements that I like in a drama: family situations, love stories, tearful moments, happy celebrations ... and the setting (Jeju-do)! I've traveled to Jeju-do twice, so the customs and scenery are things I have slight knowledge of.

But what separates "Life is Beautiful" and elevates it to a higher position is the way that Tae-Sup and Kyung-Su's relationship is written and portrayed. It is so tastefully done, and I can't help but think that this will help to make people realize that homosexuality is not the evil they think it to be.

Everything .. from Byung-Tae and Min-Jae's marriage, to Cho-Rong and Dong-Gun's budding relationship ... really appeals to me. I'm just sad that Byung-Gul is so miserable! But I have to admit ... I thought that having someone fall at the end of each episode is sheer genius! It's one of the things I look forward to seeing in this drama!

My name is "Chris". I am a Jamaican who has lived in the United States for many years, and recently migrated to Canada. Ever since the groundbreaking Luke & Noah gay storyline appeared on the U.S. daytime soap opera “As The World Turns” in 2007, I and many other people (including gay men, straight women, and a few straight men who might not care to admit it publicly J) have become enthusiastic fans of TV shows from around the world that include gay storylines. These storylines have become all the rage with online international fan bases on sites like YouTube, DailyMotion, etc. In fact, like many other people, at least in recent times I had totally lost interest in soap operas and their ridiculous plots. It was the introduction of gay storylines that rekindled my interest to watch.

I just wanted to let you know that I am such a fan of the “Life is Beautiful” Korean drama, especially the Tae Sub & Kyung Soo storyline which is what drew me to the show. I was first introduced to the show back in September 2010 through a weekly column called “Gays of Our Lives” on the AfterElton.com web-site, which covered weekly episodes of TV soap operas/ dramas from different parts of the world that have gay storylines. Since then I have been hooked. Through the show, I’ve learned more about Korean culture, and able to see the similarities that cut across many cultures, including mine.

Some of the very popular gay storylines from shows around the world which people watch online and I enjoy include:

“Life is Beautiful” is the only one though that has made me sob recently, because there are so many deeply touching moments among the characters, especially Kyung Soo and Tae Sub. Your choice of music is great for those scenes. I wept when Tae Sub ‘came out’ to his stepmother (love her!) and then to his father. I relate very much to Tae Sub; I recognize every facial expression, moment of joy, and frustrating experience he has been through. The relationship he has with Kyung Soo is so moving and hot, so I hope it survives all the challenges. I have also experienced many lighthearted and funny moments watching the show.

I hope you know how much the work you do is appreciated by many, not only in Korea. It means more than you probably know. It touches my heart. Please pass on this appreciation to all the actors, especially to my favorites, the gorgeous Song Chang Ui (Yang Tae Sub) and Lee Sang Woo (Kyung Soo).

My only concern with the show so far has been a few episodes where at least one character (Cho Rong) exclaimed to her friend that she didn’t want her skin to get too dark [because of being out in the sun], which I hope is not a racist slight against black people and other people of color.
