A young girl named Kiki (Fuka Koshiba) must leave her home for a year to begin training in witchcraft. She leaves on her broom, but first says goodbye to her friends and family. Kiki then begins her new life with her trusted cat Jiji.

Based on the children's fantasy novel "Majo no Takkyubin" by Eiko Kadono (first published January 25, 1985 by Fukuinkan Shoten).

Yasumi Haru Jan 27 2022 2:38 pm It had low critical acclaim, which i think is a shame. fuka koshiba is likeable in everything ("tokusatsu gagaga" and "youkai sharehouse" are two of my favorite tv series). and does a perfectly fine job in this. and the flying scenes are pretty neat. if you are expecting it to be a shot by shot remake of the anime, you'll be dissapointed (it's not even based on the anime). but if it was, there would be no point in making it anyway.

This is not a remake of the Ghibli anime. Being based directly on the book by Eiko Kadono, there is no chance to compare them: they are different like apples and pears.

One thing is sure: Miyazaki could win for layouts and settings alone. Actors here aren't bad, but the town is too fake to take this seriously.
