Lee Doo-Na (Bae Suzy) was a member of an idol girl group. She was the main vocalist and the most popular member of the group, but she suddenly announced her retirement. She now stays at a share house, located near a university, and rarely goes out. Meanwhile, Lee Won-Jun (Yang Se-Jong) is a university student. He is a warm-hearted, ordinary young man without anything special in his background. He begins to stay at the share house where Lee Doo-Na resides. His warm heart gives Lee Doo-Na comfort. They get attracted to each other.

If you were looking for a story with momentum or emotional payoff, the show’s preference for style over substance—concluding with a vague, open-ended finale—likely felt less like "high art" and more like a tedious wait for a climax that never arrived.

just overhyped kdrama

Jung Ah Jung Feb 08 2026 6:46 pm I watched Doona when it came out. Today I was talking with some people about Suzy with the Hime cut. There's a video short where Suzy talked about it. There were ome clips from the drama that showed Doona and Won Jun. Seeing that reminded me how he he cut he cut her out of his life. It still bothers me how he wouldn't give an inch.

Mariz Dec 24 2025 11:30 pm I've been sitting on this drama for so long but finally decided to give it a try. What a waste of time really, to wait for years to finally watch it. I should've watched it when it came out.

The story is insane. It was so intense between the two leading characters. The chemistry was just on point but the thing I love the most is how I can relate to their emotions very well.

I love how they were both not sure yet with their own feelings without knowing they already like each other. I love the complications they had with their relationship when they were both trying to pull and push with each other. I'd say it was a mess of the reality at that time but super intense as well, it just felt so true at some point. It shows how the reality works for some people who are on almost the same situation.

As for the ending, it's both bittersweet and reassuring as well. It doesn't really portray what the ending we were trying to expect. It was an ending where we can interpret it as is, depending on each individual's point of view.

Personally speaking, I'd say I'd definitely will add this drama to my rewatch list. (new project for both leading chatacters pls!!)

I'm not obsessed, just in Love.. It's crazy right? Oh well, I'm crazy then.. I have her singing performances in Germany (SBS) on Mp4 I'm watching Doona for the third time..

Also give us how was Doona able to overcome her mental health issues. So I am all for a second season please.

Brian V Oct 23 2024 3:37 pm I mostly enjoyed watching this show that wasn't funny, or sappy, or swoonworthy. It was a story of people, living their lives. The story picks up at one point in their lives, and then just ends at another point. There's no story completion for four of the six main characters, including the main two. I gave it a thumbs down on Netflix because it left me with a bleh feeling at the end.

I especially liked Ha-Young, and I hope to see her in more shows moving forward.

All the (Korean) actors perform wonderfully, conveying the atmosphere and feelings with intensity and truth. Even if it's not always easy to follow the timeline, this helps to enrich the drama. And the ending can't be any different (spoiler): they live together in love, but each with their own lives. This is the story of a rescue (or two).

seeun Jul 02 2024 7:31 am the posters and and some drama clips made me think that this drama is gem, but while watching it i kinda agree to the viewers saying this is a messed up drama. Despite the well known leads their chemistry didn't manage to click with each other. The timeline is a bit confusing, i didn't like the way they edited it, like they always jump from one scene to another without a proper transition. There are also so many scenes where they can put their ost as a bg music to enhance the scene, but they didn't that's why for me it's a bit dull. This is a romance drama but i can't feel the love. They should have showed more scenes of Doona's past so we can understand her character. Doona is so immature and annoying, and Won Jun is such a pushover.

I will definitely watch it again sometime. I truly appreciate shorter dramas that don't drag out through too many episodes. 9 episodes was just perfect for this story. It is true that the real ending is at the beginning of 9, not at the end, so when you're done go back and look at the first few minutes of the beginning of 9. :)

Suzy N Sejong Able To Portray this all in 9 episodes. The chemistry was beyond, the asmr kiss was probably the most beautiful one in kdrama land and theyre both beautiful people to look at. Bravo Doona!

The Chemistry Is Crazy Real especially the romance scenes. the acting from both ML and FL are top qualities, making the viewer feeLs every breath and move they make. It Is A Happy Ending in my opinion even the director wanted us to feel otherwise. the first scene from the last episode and theyre both in Japan in the last scene crearly portrays them as a couple while living their own lives. theyre being honest with each others feelings in that room was enough, even i would be thrilled if they give us season2. The makers really knew the beauty was in the intricate simplicity and complexity of human connection. Every characters story was so well fleshed out. The two main leads are absolutely lovable and had such great chemistry. It was such a beautifully telling of this story I love how it had no filler no drama for the sake of drama. I enjoyed the supporting characters as well there was so much character development. The story was realistic yet wistful Everything had a meaning and a purpose. It was so artistically filmed and acted. The script needs a round of applause as well. Brilliant job to everyone involved in this production. It was such a treat to watch and truly a stand out.

Aozora Dec 03 2023 9:00 am First of all, I am not a fan of Bae Suzy and I also think this series takes a lot of inspiration from the legendary My Sassy Girl. In fact, some scenes really copy the scenes from that movie (which was my first Korean show and got me into the Korean stuff).

However, Suzy's performance was really top notch. Maybe, because she was really an Idol herself. And, the soundtracks aee good.

This show is good, and some scenes provides genuine laughter, a rare commodity these days.

The ending was extremely forced and unnatural; it wouldn't be unexpected for them to drift apart pursuing their careers, but that's not how it was directed in the show. They could have portrayed it naturally, but they forced an early breakup and threw in a bunch of meaningless scenes in instead.

No, he doesn't stay with Doo-Na because he hasn't the wit to realise what he had with her. I suspect he is a bit self-centred and emotionally ungenerous.

One can see the dichotomies in Doona's personality, and the way the producers layered those expressions of loneliness juxtaposed with exploitative behaviour and addiction (cigarettes) as compensation has been accomplished in a master manner. Regrettably, judging by some of the comments, the gist and the depth of this piece can't be seen by some of my male contemporaries who, instead of seeing the personal struggles of the protagonists, focus on superficialities.

Mark Nov 03 2023 4:33 am Lee Doo-Na is a walking red flag. She has serious psychological issues and is just a really unpleasant person. She appears to be completely devoid of empathy. I think it's best (at least for Lee Won-Jun) that they didn't end up together, because from what I see of Doo-na, I couldn't imagine that she would choose to stay with him long term.

For those unhappy about the ending. Watch the opening scene on episode 9 and look at their clothes for the true ending.

Celebrity life in Korea can be rough especially on the internet. And remember, Won-jun wants to life an ordinary life so dating in secret helps put his life at ease.

I mean…see how much hate is out there just because some people didn’t see a “happy ending”?

Remember, love is also expressed with body / facial expressions. Not just words.

A stupid story of a guy who gives up a good relationship with a more attractive and sane girl to start one with a crazy person who was less attractive. Am I sorry that I watched this. So, good production, good ideas, good acting for most players, but a bad end and a dramatic cast error with Yang Se-Jong. Still thinking it's woth to watch it.

It’s not a simplistic kdrama romance, the plot is multi-layered and unexpected. 
Just seen, same director as CLOY! That figures. He’s a magical director for sure and can tackle very different plot styles in romance dramas.

It was not the usual romance drama you always see. People wondering if they are together or not, it is pretty obvious at the beginning of the last episode that they are together and also the photo album she is looking at is Won-Jun when he was younger why would she have something like that if they are not dating.

Park Oct 27 2023 1:42 pm [spoiler] This drama is fantastic. I am just a little disappointed on so many reviews saying that the couple did not end together. Although I agree that the serie has an open end, it is pretty clear to me that they are dating secretly. The director confirmed that every open scene of each episode portraits the theme of the episode. In the last chapter, they are both in place (probably Japan) dressing more maturely - Wonjun finally is working and chooses a beige coat, the same one on the ending scene. Furthermore they are smiling to each other. This is the same smile that Wonjun shows meanwhile looking at some sweetstore (probably choosing some to Doona). Despite they not look at each other at the corridor, he already said his sorryfull lane on the scene before (the same that Doona said to him previously). They are stablished and Doona has a kpop idol career to protect, so they chose to see each other in secrecy. They knew that the other one would be in Japan and at the same place. Look, everything was so well thinking on this drama, it is so pleasurable a smart conclusion like that.

Anyway, So I’m watching and I understand why some people love it and some people hate it. I think the overly romantic visuals on doona’s face and doona’s random thoughts or poems that show up halfway through each episode are over the top.

I think this show would’ve been better if it was more lighthearted, more funny. Maybe if Doona was still annoying but more funny, and if Lee Won-Jun got into more funny situations trying to run away from her. Something fun like “business proposal”. Of course Bae Suzy and Kim Do-Wan the from Start Up, so they would be good at this.

The producers and director have tried too hard with this slow and steamy vibes which is more like Nevertheless. Which is fine but I was looking for something fun, especially because the female lead was a K-pop artist.

Peter M Oct 27 2023 5:52 am [SPOILERS!] This is worth watching. Suzy and Se-Jong convincingly portrayed a young couple developing strong feelings for each other. I was pleasantly surprised by Suzy's performamce because I never thought of her as a particularly good actor. Her performance compelling. Up until about episode 7, I would have given this drama a very high score but the last epsiode was disappointing because Won-Jun's rejection of her made no sense. In fact, him not breaking up with her before beginning his mandatory military service wasn't fair at all on Doona. Even at this stage he was having mixed feelings about her return to performing not because he wasn't happy for her but rather the extreme pressure placed on her not to date. Why did he reject her? Couldn't he handle her being fanous or didn't he want the hastle of dating secretly while beginning his career?

But instead, he did the opposite. On another time, Jin Ju said that Wonju never ever skipped his classes, but then, he skipped his class with Doona.

I don't understand the glaze on yang se jong...his acting is so mid ...really need to work on his pitch and expression...from the start, i couldn't stand his acting, his reaction seems forced and not natural at all 3. Suzy portrayed her character well, but her acting is kinda, inconsistent?? Idk how to describe it but sometimes it feels like watching suzy, not doona...her acting need to be more consistent 4. Cass Oct 25 2023 6:09 pm Ever since Anna, I've been extremely excited to see what character Suzy would bring to life next and I'll have to say– I was not even the slightest bit disappointed.

I'm pretty sure I'm on the side of the majority when I say this based on how well it's performing on Netflix worldwide, but this piece is worth all the hype. The acting is great, the directing is done with purpose, and the scenes used provide a more intrinsic look into the mind of Doona who is struggling with the lack of love from family and strangers, but also the doubts in herself and her inability to find worth and trust in her own decisions. The psychology of repeating the same scenes of her failed performance and her helplessness towards it was an element I really appreciated as someone who has studied film, media, and literature for all of my life. She is left with no other memories apart from a huge mistake, and when she does recall moments of her past as an idol, they're often paired with a blur and a reverb she can only distinguish when the scene hurts her enough. Although the drama had 9 episodes to pack what they could into 45 minutes per, I think they executed her trauma and depression in a way that makes us viewers think about how she could find her way out of this hole.

The slowness of the drama is intentional, as it reflects Doona and her mental. Everyday is a repeat for her and just when she thinks she has the opportunity to heal, she relapses and she finds herself back in square one. It's a very sad but accurate portrayal of people who suffer from extreme clinical depression and anxiety, and for her to perform the part so well is astonishing. Everything is dull but it's also realistic, and when there are much brighter scenes, it's when Doona herself is trying to wring herself free from the tangles of her mind and damaged soul. Her micro-expressions are also a delight to study, because like her role in Anna, she embodies this character like a second skin.

When you think about why a certain theme, motif, scene, or action repeats so much in a drama, a simple character study will elaborate on those curiosities. The director did a very good job with the prop management and the constant request of having Doona smoke, as it shows that her scars run deeper and she uses it as a coping mechanism as much as she uses it as a form of escaping the reality she can't leave behind. I think I would be here all day if I were to dissect every single intent behind the pacing and concept of this drama, but this should be plenty to show how enamoured and attached I am to this series. The emotional connect I have to Doona is indescribable, and I am left empty wondering how she would be doing right now as if she were a real person.

Truly a beautiful piece with unapologetic ties to realism. Many series fail to show an authentic perspective, but I can say with confidence that 'Doona!' did everything right.

I love the story but not much satisfied in the ending for me It's kind of "BITIN" . I'm hoping that there is a Season 2 . And Now I'm rooting for Yang Se Jong . A Oct 25 2023 1:04 am Doona! is a light teenage romance drama, suitable for watching when relaxing, but also shows relationship problems that are like a roller coaster. Bae Suzy and Yang Sejong managed to provide good chemistry as a couple in the drama. I liked how they became friends, cared for each other, and finally fell in love with each other.

What makes this drama seem heavy is perhaps Doona's character, who tends to be less stable due to trauma during her time as an idol and chooses to act as she pleases according to people's opinions so far. Doona's attitude improved even more after getting to know Lee Wonjun, who was polite, smart, understanding and not judgmental like the others.

Not only romance, this drama also shows friendship and the struggle to find the identity of each actor. All the cast got their own happiness

This is the first time I saw her in a heavy serious role especially smoking ( not sure if she is a non smoker in life) She deserve a best acting award for this. Se-jong looks handsome and you can feel his a very kind person that shows alot in his acting.Overall , I loved the beginning till the ending , a story of healing and forgiveness.

In terms of story it's actually interesting, neither too slow nor too fast. The ending of the story is also fitting. Please release a bluray version, maybe it would be better if the cut scenes were shown.

AL Oct 22 2023 9:05 am 9 episodes were not enough to develop the history of the webtoon, the friendship between the people of the shared house wasn´t showed. the scenes showed after the intro weren´t in the story, indicating a high edition cutting episodes. I´m not in favor of smoking, but that characteristic of the FM was needed to show her need of attention, that was the main reason to stay a lot of time outside the shared house and to begin her relationship with the ML. Doona is a very confliting person, abandoned by her mother and PD that was a father figure in her life, shifted her love to Won-Joon and finally blosson to a full professional and independent person. I kind of liked the story but not the editing nor the ending.

All the female lead does is smoking and smoking and the male lead likes her all of a sudden when he was clearly in love with another girl. There was no character development or whatsoever. Netflix kdramas are getting so boring these days. 6/10 is the best rating I could think of for this drama.

The scenes and cinematography were amazing. The storyline was slow but it's not, if you know what I mean. The story was predictable but still made want to keep watching! I loved every single episode and the nostalgic feels! 98/100

The people who are complaining about the ending just don't get it. I thought it was done just right, everyone likes to be spoon fed I guess.

While it does leave us with a cliffhanger with both leads continuing to pursue their careers, i just feel that the scenes leading up to it did not match the tone of where they were at in their relationship. The last 2 eps did feel very rushed, tbh wouldnt have mind if we had 3 more eps for the writers to show the length of time they were apart from each other. Overall amazing scenes and cinematography, top-notch acting from both leads, and great cast all around. Ngl i did feel for Jinju's story, and wouldnt have mind if her and Wonjun ended up together... just felt like a missed opportunity between them.

I've seen many more boring drama that even found myself struggling to continue to watch, such as ''blood", "a piece of your mind", or ''love rain".. the slow pace in them really unbearable for me

But for me, it's depends on how you're going to interpret the drama. As for me, it wasn't bad at all. It's really depicted how some relationships in real life could happened (TOO REAL). How Doona and Won Jun has playing their characters together is beyond my expectations as they managed to make giggling and sh*tz, and the other time their behavior do change my mood into confusions (and it kinda irritates me).

Talking about the ending, it is actually an open ending. Not sure Netflix wanted to make another seasons ??? If you like this kind of drama, pls watch it. Spoiler alert ( in the webtoon the didnt end up together, but in the netflix ??.... Nah watch it at your own risk ?

This show is a little slow, but pretty good until the last two episodes … then it’s just stupid and rushed. It feels like the writers think their show needs to be vague and sad for it to be considered “high quality.” Instead, it’s just frustrating. I think I’m going to give up on the this genre. I’m honestly disappointed because I love Suzy Bae. The writers did not deliver material that matched up to her acting talent.

I used to read tons of romance pocketbooks in my teenage years so I can easily mentally visualize what the main protagonists are feeling and thinking in some of the emotional scene. Most of the time the direction purposely omitted explanatory verbalization from the main characters. The direction should have ramp up the characters’ facial and body language during pivotal emotional scene to compensate the reduced verbalization from the main characters. Still this is a series that should be enjoyed to watch.

There is a happy ending in this drama for those who hate sad and depressing conclusion. Won Jun break-up with Doona because he loves her so much that he don’t wants to stand on her way to self redemption. Doona was angry with him because he wasn’t brave enough to let Doona face the world with him by her side while Doona was already determined to redeemed herself together with Won Jun.

Doona cried hard during the break up and again after seeing Won Jun a couple years later, she’s fallen deeply in love with Won Jun despite the years of separation. We even see Doona looking at old messages from Won Jun during their time apart. Compared that to Won Jun teenage love, Jin Ju who simply looks at him fondly without pains. Won Jun can’t seem to push himself to reunite with his ex girlfriend Doona, probably too angry with himself for leaving her and even wants Doona to leave him alone as punishment after admitting his mistakes. In the end, they both confess they missed each others through the years with Doona embracing Won Jun first as a sign of forgiveness. Nothing can stop them from being together from this moment on.

Maybe its just me but I see happy ending everywhere in this drama.

I liked her acting skills in Anna here she's blant and bored. I was so long waiting for Yang SeJong's comeback and hoped he'd chose a better script than an awkward school boy who falls in love with an idol but has no idea who she is but his best friend talks about her all the time... Really?! The script is stupid as well, if she's so famous, there's no paparaci at all, no one recognizes her, she roams around half naked and still no fan reaction but she's a big idol LOL. The second couple is redeculus as well, she's strong and does jiu jitsu but when her ex grabs her from the hand she's like oh that hurts instead of knocking him down, rediculous. Very disapointed and no it's going to be a failure on Netflix for sure.

This series literally blow my mind because of the realistic story and ending. I would say its an open ending. You just accept according to your own emotions. I’ll definitely rewatch them again the in the future. The way suzy and yang sejong deliver their lines and emotions just make your heart flutter and ache at the same time. The story are beautiful and painful but im glad i able to see on other pov (job as idol and their love life) its heart wrenching and the realities just amazing. I’ll rate 10/10 in my pov! All the cast did a good job tho!!

I loved it just after 1 episode and it did not disappoint. It is not your average rom-com. It touches a lot of mental health and it was full of emotions. Her character being rude in the beginning is her just shielding off people because she literally has no one to rely on. It’s her way of protecting herself and her feelings. It dives in deeper than that.

Acting is superb! Wish it wasn’t so short. Chemistry is amazing also.

Initially, I thought why Doona act very rude in the beginning eps was due to physical or sexually abused by her manager. Turns out thats not the case. Overall, I see several plot loopholes that has not been explained throughout the 9 eps, just so similar with Nevertheless, and I think it should have more than 9 eps, maybe 12 eps.

Btw, is there anyone could explain about what does the ending scene mean?

I think it will be based on the anime "The Girl Downstairs". It has only 22 episodes I think so it is really a short one. The anime ended a happy one since they ended up together. So I think it will have the same ending as well.

But then again I guess since this is a take on kdrama, I think kdrama version of this webtoon will be a bit less s*xu*l and provocative in a way. Since the original is kinda bit provocative.
