In 1969, Colonel Kim Jin-Pyeong (Song Seung-Heon) has returned to South Korea after fighting with valor in the Vietnam War. He is trusted by the Army Commander who is also his father-in-law and respected by nearly everyone on the military base. Nevertheless, Colonel Kim Jin-Pyeong suffers internally from his experiences in the war.

One day, Kyung Woo-Jin (On Joo-Wan) is transferred to work for Kim Jin-Pyeong. Kyung Woo-Jin is the type that will say or do anything to please his boss. Soon, Colonel Kim Jin-Pyeong meets Jong Ga-Heun (Lim Ji-Yeon), the wife of his new subordinate. The couple also moved into the house across the street from Colonel Kim Jin-Pyeong and his wife (Cho Yeo-Jeong).

On a fateful evening, Colonel Kim Jin-Pyeong teases a caged bird on the porch of his neighbor's home. A stifling obsession soon begins between Colonel Kim Jin-Pyeong and the wife of his subordinate.

Sue Aug 31 2023 7:39 pm As so many have commented, this movie did push the limits with its very explicit scenes. Because of that, I do think some of the important messages were missed.

Many complained about the movie as if it ignored the immorality of adultery when in fact, the opposite is true. There is no point in the story where adultery is condoned or encouraged (except for the guilt ridden mother-in-law). Quite the contrary. There were struggles with guilt on both sides. The music room owner described the ML as not being “that kind of person”, and expressed disapproval with what they were doing. There was humiliation and destruction as a result of this affair. This “love” did not lead to any kind of fulfillment or happiness. In fact, it brought about despair, loss and turmoil. All that, in no way, glamorizes infidelity.

I think the story was less about love and more about desperation. Both characters were damaged, the ML by the horrors of war, and the FL by a childhood of trauma and loss. The intensity of the sex scenes reflected the depth of desperation. But, desperation is not love, and the fact that the FL said she did not love him “enough” to give up her life, is proof of that.

Mental illness plays a major part in this movie. I do wish the script had focused more clearly on PTSD as it pertained to the ML. Many of his feelings, choices, reactions and needs were because of this. Looking for an escape, someone to save you, and feelings other than pain are part of survival for this character. A healthy person does not attempt suicide because of love. It is someone who is broken and knows no other way to relieve the pain, and loneliness they are feeling, who attempts suicide. This act by the ML confirms his illness, not his love.

Lastly, the societal pressure and seduction of achieving status, power and rank (especially in the structure of the military) contributed to these characters marrying for the wrong reasons, living inauthentic lives and using one another.

I thought this was a thought provoking, nuanced and atypical K-drama. I must admit I was initially taken aback by the erotic scenes. It is, however, a movie worth watching because of the excellent acting, important themes and historical setting.

I was just curious how Im Jiyeon started her acting career so what better way than to check acting awards she won, her two awards for this is well deserved. I love her more, from Money Heist II, to her iconic The Glory, and I am finishing up Lies Hidden in My Garden, she's amazing in all she portrays, see you in The Killing Vote this August.

Renwa Sep 28 2021 4:59 pm Loved the movie…well written, so very well acted, nuanced & layered themes…to the nay sayers commenting…this is a drama, these are actors, there is a rating system for all to review, this movie was rated R, to some it’s considered erotica as a genre…so what’s the problem? This is art whether you like it or not. We as an audience don’t get to or shouldn’t encourage censorship which seems to have crept into K drama or too many reasons other than sexuality. Let’s leave the artistic choices to the film makers & actors who have devoted their lives to their craft.

savindy Sep 22 2021 8:09 pm Not at all what I expected. For one- I did not expect SSH nudity and I am Here For It!! Damn he is fine!! So is she. Secondly-the story! Finally- the effects of poor and overlooked mental health..

I didn't quite understand why it was named Obsessed. But after watching now I understand. The ending was so surreal you won't see it coming! So emotional. I loved SSH's character. He had a never ending battle with his conscience, swayed a little- I think his very poor mental health played a big part in it! Mental health was a taboo subject- so I do believe he was desperately grasping at strings and incredibly depressed before he met her. The fact that he stayed loyal, and true to his character by helping those in need- says a lot about him.

Clueless and sweet partners they've got. Kim ji pyeong almost killed himself cause of another woman,when his pregnant wife is at home.Rubbbish, cheating is bad, cheating in a marriage is worst, just divorce and do whatever after

Affair is affair Sep 02 2020 12:57 pm Okay, i wanna say that this movie captured from the different perspective about an affair. First thing first two thumbs up for the actor who played as a colonel. Wow, he truly dont speaks too much, he speaks with his eyes and i can understand alla of thay as a viewer. Also the music is beautifully directed. Durations pretty long, the plot seems slow but enough as it is have to be.

This is perfectly match with proverb "the depth of the blue sea can be measured, but the heart of who knows?" people change, feeling change, or since the beginning both the couples married and built relationships without love? Wow so then you finally found your affair is your true love.. I'm like damn yooo, but this can be happen, realistic even its super annoying. Falling in love is not a crime, married someone you dont love is evil, and yeah AFFAIR IS AFFAIR. Huft, the complexity of human hearts. Haha so i'm pretty happy that the ending is just like that because it cant be thay easy to unite with ur affair. Especially in that background time and military society.

I think this movie is underrated. I believe Song should have been more appreciated for this casting as this was a very different character which would have been difficult for him to play. Full of passion and emotions. Simply loved it. Everyone must watch this.

Lisa Jul 06 2015 4:49 am I actually don't get why people are so distressed about the sex scenes? This movie deals with a topic where those scenes just underline the theme even more. This is not a basic romance movie. If you thought that, than you did not understand the movie. The title says it all. It's about obsessive relationships and in my eyes those sex scenes just underlined that. If they didn't show those I actually would quite wonder where the obsessive relationship is? Without them there is a whole part missing about basic human instincts that defines the movie. A lot of American actors do such films also and they aren't pulled down by them. Why is it wrong to extend ones horizon and prove others that they are even capable of doing such scenes? This actually makes them more appealing in my eyes, because it shows that they are really mature in acting and won't mess up what is given to them. If you feel like it is too much, you are either way to young or prudish. Sex is a daily matter in everybody's life. So calm down and enjoy this movie about a really serious matter. Such obsessive affairs are even an issue in our century. And they aren't rainbows and tea cups. An affair contains raw sex and if they didn't really show it in this movie I would have missed the raw feeling of that obsessive love affair.

Quite tragic. I have no problem with the sex scenes, it's a rated R movie and well what gorgeous creatures they were. But I'm very surprised that Song Seung Hun pushed the boundary of his "usual" character - the love sick and drama-type. Obsession is different in that the man died. Tragic!

I seen all his movies & I love him very much...the story line was great & his acting was awesome as always but the sex sences was a bit much :(... I know its called "Obsessed" but its really not necessary 4 that much nudity...it didn't leave room 4 any imagination....and imagination is what makes it exciting...and I totally agreed with emgem....he is too awesome 4 this kind of roles...I don't see him quit the same anymore....he didn't leave anything 4 me to wonder about... If u know what I mean????...oh!!! & What dose the families & friends of the leading lady has to say about her first role of being in a movie? Or the Chinese fans respond to her role? If you're looking for an entertaining happy go lucky straight to the point movie than this is not for you. The actors/actresses did a wonderful job. I felt along of emotions watching this. Glad SSH took on this role. It shows he is not afraid and prepared to be out of his comfort zone. This movie was beautifully done.

It's a beautiful and short lived love story between two persons anesthetized by life and war, over the unusual background of the korean side of the Vietnam war. Song Seung Heon and Lim Ji Yeon render a good portrait of their characters discovering a pure, unexpected and ill-fated love. Jo Yeo Jeong becomes touching as the guiltless but somehow distant wife. Yu Hae Jin is the unexpected veteran with the kind heart. The famous love scenes are natural, sweet and intense. Recommended.

I think Dec 30 2014 2:02 am I think you guys need to either read the plot or watch the movie again. This is not supposed to be a romantic movie with love but people who are obsessed with each other. I'm glad to see SSH in another role because he was becoming a kind of robot actor. Worth watching..

YesMe Dec 20 2014 2:14 am One horrible movie. The acting was not that great, very stiff and unemotional. The movie was mostly sex scenes. There was hardly any romantic scenes, except for maybe the part with the waltz dance. The movie should have focused more on the psychology of the main characters because they both appeared to be extremely psychologically disturbed. The story could have revolved around the past disturbances of the characters which could have been a leading factor to the current obsession but instead it was minimally touched on in the movie.

I would not recommend watching this.I am disappointed in this movie and the acting. I hope song seung hun does not pick another movie like this because i really like him.

It showed Love , Passion, a sense of duty and also a feeling of helplessness at not being able to be with or the protect the woman he is in Love with . In all it showed the actor as a man who enacts every role like it was meant to be only Him and for Him , be it romance or comedy or even anything loving and passionate as this without making anyone of it seem out of line .

naeohmee Sep 13 2014 9:48 am I love song seung heon for doing this movie, it shows how committed he is to his profession, the movie is so much more than a couple of sex scenes, he full on displays what it feel like to be caught in an all consuming love that, a destructive love that proves you have no say in the matter of who owns your heart, how crazy love can make you, you just toss everything else away because loving that person is all you want to do, all you can do, its all that matters. Well done, very well done, and the scenes where they made love were done appropriately, never seemed like a porn but literally like an addiction. amazing movie.

I've seen bits and pieces and it turns me off because for a talented, handsome and sexy actor like him, he shouldn't be doing this kind of erotic movie which I'm really disappointed in him. Ki May 16 2014 1:26 am Watch "Obsesesed" here in South Korea on its opening day. First off, what a lot of people will talk about is the sex scenes. There's about 3 of them and let me tell you they are quite graphic. I'm not talking about close ups of a face then cuts to a close up of body parts that may or may not be a body double, but wide shots of entire persons ... bumping and grinding and doing stuff that Luther Vandross and R. Kelly made a lot of money singing about. I will say the first scene was pretty hot, but by the third one it seemed a bit too much.

The movie itself is quite ambitious and you can tell it aspires to become one of those great romance films that people (especially women) will gush over for years. I don't think it hit those lofty standards, but there's moments where the film does work and overall it does OK. Song Seung-Heon performed better than any past roles I have watched him in. Lim Ji-Yeon had the more engaging performance in my opinion, but she wasn't required to do as much. I think anybody that has an interest in the film should check it out and they likely won't be disappointed. The question is how much will it appeal to each person.

VicFet Mar 20 2014 7:14 am I LOVE SSH but really dislike the age gap! Didn't care for the gap in Man Loves either and ended up disappointed in the whole drama. Also, really hated the age gap in Prime Minister - so no one can say I'm not consistent! LOL Didn't watch Prime Minister even though I love Yoon Si Yoon and the leads didn't even have steamy sex scenes from what I hear - still age gap YECH! Now it looks like this drama will have lots of steam which I would love to have watched if SSH wasn't making out with his daughter! LOL But for all my fellow drama watchers enjoy - I'll be skipping this one and hope SSH does another drama with a more appropriate leading lady.

And for all who say he isnt a good actor...try watching East of Eden...this guy can act and I am used to seeing many good actors in America...and he could stand tall with any of them. I can't wait to see this film. I have watched everything he has done and he is great. He was great is A Better Tomorrow also...whoever says this man cant act has got a screw loose. Heck he doesnt even have to act, just stand there lololol. And as far as the age gap...pleaseeeee....this is the 21st Century not the 18th Century. Get with the program and times people.

His acting is SUPERB; East of Eden, Autumn in my Heart, Summer Scent; I can go on and on~let's not discredit this seasoned actor. "Human Addiction" won't be any different~Song Seung heon will give it his BEST and will bring success to the big screen. He is just that kind of an actor..."Always" puts his best foot forward like the rest of the seasoned actors like BYJ, SJS, LBH and more.
