Tsubaki Hibino (Emi Takei) is a young teenage girl with a talent for styling other people's hair. Yet, Tsubaki suffers from low self-esteem and isn't very comfortable styling her own hair. She also has a tendency to dress old-fashioned. She's teased at high school because of this.

One day, popular male student Kyota Tsubaki (Tori Matsuzaka) targets Tsubaki for teasing. Kyota Tsubaki holds sway over the entire classroom and is quite a playboy. Inexplicably they fall in love. Meanwhile, Kyota Tsubaki has commitment issues ...

yong Nov 06 2017 1:00 pm A really great movie! It's so mature even tho the movie's name is 'love for beginners'. Actors and actress doing so well here, including the supporting ones. I just hope it can be longer, cause things they put at the ending, I really want to watch it fully. Tori Matsuzaka and Emi Takei did so well, they're so cute together. I love Kento Yamazaki, but I thought Tori did so well potraying the character of Kyouta here. I'm a fan now! :)

YuriNyanChan Jun 22 2017 12:28 am Someone mentioned about transformation, she/he probably expect the from ugly duckling to beautiful swan kind of transformation but no, this is not about an ugly girl but more about a girl without confident. Little Thing Called Love was a movie about a normal cheerful ugly girl later transformed into a beautiful girl for her senior, but Love for Beginners was about an insecure girl trying hard not to make any mistake who met a boy the total opposite of her (tho they share the same name). This is a movie with a good message, but the manga is better.

Hmmm (again) Aug 07 2015 1:11 am and seriously.... why didn't they put kento yamazaki as the lead actor. he is very very FINE. he looks so good in "death note" drama as L, and also sooo cute as the lead actor in LDK. he fits the criteria as a popular senpai>.< waiting for his new movie "Orange" and "No Longer Heroine".

Hmmm Aug 07 2015 1:03 am I don't get why you called this a good movie-_- it sucked, like... pretty bad. it's cheesy yet not pleasing, and come on... we all know that the girl is already pretty, she has slender body and cute face. it's only the way she dressed up that's old fashion. if you want to see what transformation movie like this, try watching "Little Thing Called Love". that's what you called turning a freakin ugly girl into a beautiful women. btw I'm new to this J-movie thing, yet I've watched Kimi Ni Tidoke, L-DK, The Liar and His Lover, Girl In Sunny Place, Rurouni Kenshin, and Parasyte. so I'm so stressed out right now coz I need more movie like that:" yet this movie is sooo bad. I thought it's because i watched this in 2015, but kimi ni todoke is still cute and it's from 2010-_-

sniper Jul 11 2013 7:56 am I watched this and I say, they should have cast a lead actor like Miura Shohei or Miura Haruma or Mizobata Junpei or Kakku Kento. They are more hearthrob looking than Matsuzaka Tori. Tori is boring.

Adina Jul 05 2013 12:18 pm Love the movie very much. Was looking through the popular movies on gooddrama.net and saw this. The pic looked good so I just went for it without reading the plot. Turned out, it was a great movie. Though it was better if it was a drama, but the movie still seems as a success. Thumbs up for all who was involved. Recommended if you want cute high school love story. Not innocent and light but still, it was pretty cool.

Tokyo Jim May 03 2013 10:49 am Saw this on a United Airlines flight from TLV to EWR. I had low expectations given the subject matter, but I was wrong. It was so well done and I was really impressed with how the story was handled, the acting, etc.

In fact, I watched three Japanese (and one Korean) movie on the flight and thought how ironic that there is probably nowhere in the U.S. to see these movies with English subtitles, but you can if you take a flight on an American airline.

I didn't really love it (there wasn't any scene that made squeal >_<; made i've just read too much shoujo manga that im becoming immune -__-), but its not like it completely sucks either. I was impressed though that they where able to fit so much content in those 120 min. and it didn't feel rushed.

Plus, this is her third work with Matsuzaka Tori... they're really pushing these two together. ._. There was the dramas, GOLD and Asuko March!... :|

I think they're both great actors though, so it'll be good (better be!). :)

lambo May 15 2012 9:09 am nyaa why came the trailer so quickly ?! i want to watch it now >< about the cast i think they look really good together and their appearance are like the characters but i don't know how good they acting their roles. tsubaki is a really cute girl and kyota is like a perfect boyfriend. i think it will be difficult to play it.

Should it be a hit like Paradise Kiss or just a disappointment like Koukou Debut nee~? Anyway, I am eager to see how the work of those new actors come out.

Rei Jan 04 2012 9:53 am they should stop picking takei for almost everything. she's in samurai x already and then she's here as tsubaki. what I'm trying to say is, there are lots of better options than her for tsubaki. this is my favorite manga but for me, her acting is not maximum or enough to make me go "wow she's awesome". so yeah, they should stop casting models, really. /shrug
