Set in the 18th century, "Red Sleeve" depicts a love story between King Jeongjo and royal concubine Uibin Sung.

Sung Deok-Im is a court lady. She gets involved with Crown Prince Yi San and he falls in love with her. The crown prince eventually becomes King Jeongjo. He now desires Sung Deok-Im to become his concubine, but she refuses. Sung Deok-Im wants to live her life freely, something that will not be possible as a concubine. She also knows that life of a royal concubine does not generally bring about happiness. Yet, Sung Deok-Im becomes the concubine of King Jeongjo.

Park Hye-Soo was first offered the lead female role, but declined.

Jada Feb 12 2026 5:40 pm Beautiful drama, though at times it felt like the female lead lacked depth. Knowing the true story behind it makes it all the more tragic. Court Lady Uibin entered the palace at age ten to serve King Jeongjo’s mother. When she was 14 and he was 15, King Jeongjo proposed to her. She refused—an act that could have cost her her life. He later wrote that he waited fifteen years for her and was rejected twice. She was known to be kind, frugal, and exceptionally intelligent. Eventually, she accepted him and gave birth to their first son in 1780, when she was 27. Between 1780 and 1786, she suffered two miscarriages. Their son died at the age of 3, and their daughter passed away at just one year old. In 1786, while late in pregnancy, she fell ill and died. King Jeongjo wrote an epitaph expressing his profound love for her and his deep sorrow over the loss of both her and their son. A truly bittersweet love story.

Mei Oct 05 2025 2:52 am This sageuk drama is based on the True Story of the love between the Joseon King Jeongjo and his royal concubine Uibin Sung. Alot of foreign viewers like myself who was not aware of this important fact and was confused about the need to air the last Episode 17 when Episode 16 could have make the drama ended in a happy mode. Episode 17 completed the real life of the King Jeongjo. By replaying it as his dream, it confused more viewers and leaving them dissatisfied. It’s worth watching if you like biographical dramas like this one as the script is non-fiction displaying the glamorous yet tragic lives in the palace with lots of love and chemistry. Otherwise don’t complain nor criticize as real facts in history cannot be erased or altered. Well done to Lee Joon Ho for playing King Jeongjo. I love it! He really deserved the 2022 BaekSang Art Best Actor Award! ?

Nenita Oct 02 2025 6:36 pm The plot was really great but lacked an emotional appeal, it simply did not tug my heartstrings the way I wanted it to.

This is an intricate story about a king who loves his wife Deok-Im, and who is also dutiful to his people. Deok-Im knows that the king doesn't fully belong to her. He partially belongs to his nation which is also partially true. That's why Deok-Im doesn't really want to become his concubine, she doesn't want to share (which is not really a bad thing). But to some level it might come out as greedy, this was the king. Thus a theme duty over love.

You'll have to read in between the lines to know that Deok-Im loved the king, but that's really what I anticipated. I wanted her to be loud with her love to the king. The king seems to be the only one giving, and her taking. Nevertheless, Deok-Im played a great role into getting the king to where he was.

A theme that also has a strong foundation is that of 'great responsibility'. I'm pretty sure you've heard the phrase with great power comes great responsibility. The king has a huge cross to carry, which seems heavy and burdensome. It is pretty lonesome for the king after Deok-Im's death. He remarries though , for duty's sake. At the end, the king would rather choose love over duty, which begs the question, how would that look like for the people. Could you truly eat your cake and have it?

eeyao Jul 29 2025 2:08 am don’t listen to the comment below, they literally have no understanding of the social expectations of a concubine in historical Korea. i think Red Sleeve drama was too sympathetic to male protagonist and that’s why you get dumb takes from people criticizing the lower class female character who literally is risking death if the king ever decides he doesn’t like her. he even threatens her at some point. take off your rose colored goggles please. the acting was very good in this show and had high ratings for a reason.

The Red Sleeve* – Watch Something Else

Let me be absolutely clear: **don’t watch this drama.** I’m saying this as someone who stuck through every episode hoping for emotional payoff — and got absolutely nothing.

Yes, the show looks beautiful. Yes, the acting is solid. But the writing? **Emotionally bankrupt.**

The biggest problem is **Seong Deok Im**. From the beginning, she shows interest in the king — but the moment he returns it, she turns cold, silent, and completely uncommunicative. She constantly leaves him hanging, emotionally begging, while she stands there mute like she’s doing the world a favor. For what? Dignity? Principle? It just came off as **emotionally toxic**.

She never apologizes. She never gives him clarity. She never gives the audience closure. And we’re expected to find this “sad” or “beautiful”? No — it’s just frustrating.

Let’s not romanticize it: the king — powerful, emotionally vulnerable, and deeply loyal — spends most of the drama chasing a woman who gives him nothing but confusion and cold shoulders. She acts like he’s annoying her, when all he’s doing is asking for her heart. And somehow **we’re supposed to admire her for it**?

The writing turns her into a character who walks around like she’s morally superior, despite being a **low-ranking maid** who constantly oversteps boundaries and inserts herself into political matters. She has no real growth, no insight, and no emotional accountability. She just... **withholds**. And keeps withholding. Until she dies. Without ever giving him peace.

By the end, I wasn’t sad. I was **relieved**. Not because it was a great tragedy — but because I couldn’t take another episode of her emotional constipation. Her death was the only closure we were going to get, and honestly, it came too late.

Jung Hae-ri might have had a vision of restraint and sacrifice, but she delivered a cold, unsatisfying shell of a love story. Compare this to something like *Snowdrop* or *Mr. Plankton*, where even painful endings felt earned. *The Red Sleeve* just feels like a punishment — for the characters, and especially for the viewers.

So no — I don’t recommend this. Not even a little. Save yourself the heartbreak and **watch something where love actually looks like love**.

I watched her in The Crown Clown, the way she acted in both characters Queen and concubine is such a different, I realised what a versatile actress she is. An acting genius. I’m definitely a new fan

I love the story, performances, cinematography, direction, musical scoring, leads amazing chemistry, and Lee Seyoung's natural pretty face. I loved Deok-Im her loyalty the crowned prince since they were small. How many times she saved him in the past . Why can you hate that character? At that time during the Joseon era women are nothing they don't have any voice, no right to complain, no freedom. Lastly, how she loved her friends and her brother. She even send her brother to the military school from her own money, her friends are her family and I loved how it was executed on the show. Over all, I think it was Deok-Im and Yi San story. It may be a sad ending to some but it doesn't necessarily mean that it was a bad ending. Remember, it was a true story. #LeeSeYoung #TheRedSleeve

So many things to love about this show. Spoilers ahead!

Love the way the romance is built up and how the conflicting emotions of DI are shown to us. Love over freedom but is there true freedom as a maid of the Court in those days..

Love the way the story showed us how confined the women of the palace are which explains why palaces are huge with so much garden and lakes. Aside from flexing the ability to spend, it is much needed for the women who lives in the palace for decades.

Love the ending where the King reunited with DI. Beautifully written and I got the happy ending in reel life. Finally the King can let go of his responsibilities and pursue what he longed for.

Great script writing and performance from the cast. My emotions enjoyed the roller coaster ride! Thank you!

Dong Yi's son is Prince Yeoning, later became King Yeongjo. Drama Haechi (2019) tell about Prince Yeoning became King Yeongjo. Drama Secret Door (2014) tell about King Yeongjo and his son, Prince Sado, Prince Sado had died in 27 years old. Drama the red sleeve (2021). Prince Sado's son is Lee San, later became King Jeongjo after King Yeongjo passed away.

eeyao Jan 05 2025 7:56 pm the FL does not lack facial expression, some viewers seem to lack the ability to read nuance in people's faces. the contrast between Deok-im's personality in the past (which definitely didn't lack facial expression, she was so animated) and the present is supposed to feel palpable, as becoming a concubine strips her of all agency and happiness in the name of love (and societal pressure). i really distrust people who watch dramas like this and fawn over the ML but don't sympathize or empathize at all with the FL's plight. do you realize what it might have been like to be a woman in that situation, historically?

the real Deok-im was also not treated that well by the king. being chosen and loved by the king is not necessarily a blessing. please watch with more compassion. Seyoung performed beautifully in this role, transforming Deok-im over the years perfectly.

ouirabi Nov 26 2024 4:45 pm I cried my eyes out watching this series. I loved it so much that I even watched a movie about his father just to understand the story deeply. Recommended it to my mum, and she loved it too (it was a surprise for me because she didn’t like anything besides empress ki). The storyline is beautiful, the actors played so well I felt every emotion, especially Junho. And the fact that it’s based on true story!!! I watched it a year ago and feel like I’m gonna rewatch it, just gonna skip some episodes ifykyk.

I realize I'm talking to air here but for my review I'll say this briefly. This was the best story, acting, and execution (directing) of a period romantic kdrama that I have seen so far but it ain't for the faint of heart.

If the goal was the ultimate push/pull, it succeed. For most of the drama, I enjoyed this aspect. The last 2 episodes sorts flew off the rails for me though. Not because of bad acting or a rushed ending. It was just too painful IMHO.

From the moment she grabbed his hand in ep 16, I felt intense discomfort in the pit of my stomach. Lee Se Young confused the hell out of me with her facial expressions and character inner monolog. But after reflecting on my own life, I can see how grieved she must have been to make that commitment and then be bound to a life she really didn't want. When she smiled at him, and gave herself away, there was so much pain and angst I literally screamed at the TV "that's assault!!" The king was indeed a good king, but a terrible "husband" as court lady Seo said.

ALL the things he could have done to make life better for her, he was oblivious to because his top priority was his kingship. Thinkng he only needed to love her, which he clearly did, was his fatal flaw. He was the KING. If this woman is so deep in your heart, change the rules. I know "freeing the slaves" was his ultimate goal, but after what happened with the first head court lady, he should have worked on "freeing the palace maids".

Each one belonging to him, when it seems he never touched another woman (maybe it was implied that he did, though), was something he should have changed. Even if Deok Im would never be called Queen, he should have lived by his words to her. "I want to be a family with you." "I will never love like my grandfather". He should have saved her friend, he should have let her mourn properly. So many things he should have done as a husband.

This is all moot cause that means the show ends at episode 14 and boom a happy ending. I know TV ain't like that.

The actual ending left me with mixed emotions so I'm choosing to belief it was true and in real time.

Erika Oct 01 2024 3:36 pm These historical dramas all seem to have the same plot. A prince figure trying to become a king. If the main lead is the King, he will have no power. If the main lead is the prince, then every other family member, in collusion with high ranking officials like the Left State Counselor, will try to thwart his efforts the whole way.

I'm up to episode 7 and although the story isn't anything new, the actors are taking this drama to new heights. Junho is just so good at everything.

However, I'm discouraged to continue because I don't know if I can take the romance slow burning for 7 more episodes. The sparks flew way too early in the drama (I'm talking ep 2 and 3) for us to have to wait until episode 14 before "something" happens. What the heck will take them so long??? Not sure I have the heart to wait it out. I shouldn't have googled "red sleeve first kiss".

Thursday Aug 29 2024 6:21 pm Well.. finally I got a time to watch this kdrama series. It gives me a mixed feeling, mostly sad. I like both the ML and FL, they did great job for their roles. One main comment I would like to make is, .. the ending should be just enough with episode 16. Episode 17 is totally unnecessary and in fact, it actually ruins the whole drama! I can't believe they decided to create episode 17 with such a depressing plot.

Nadia Jun 24 2024 12:48 pm This one stays with you long after it’s ended. Much like Scarlet Heart Ryeo (my apologies if I got the spelling wrong) did the first time I saw it. This is the most intense one sided love affair I’ve ever seen in a drama. Junho blew my mind in this one. Not only does he have amazing chemistry with all his female leads, he has amazing chemistry with the entire cast. In all his dramas especially this one. He’s that kind of actor. Ji Chang Wook is also like that in his roles. I’ve always been a fan of Junho but after this drama, I’m locked in.

Wow. Just wow for this drama. Very entertaining drama. It takes you on a journey with you whole heart with all the relationships. A heartbreaking drama but worth the watch. You will fall in love with San for sure.

I might need a minute to the feelings left over from this drama pass.

Park Min Dec 23 2023 6:29 am Some soundtracks were brilliant and went hard while other ones were pure rehashed garbage picked up from your local free-licensed store. However, the drama itself suffered from being painfully long-winded, with excessive and unnecessary long shots that reflected negatively on the cinematography. Especially when the chemistry was average at best. Plot-wise, it fell into the trap of being extremely formulaic, treading familiar ground seen in many dramas with the girl/prince trope. It didn't dare to try anything new or to spin its own twist. The male lead made the whole experience significantly uncomfortable and challenging, his personality didn't exude any attractive qualities in the slightest; in fact, I found his behavior to be quite repulsive, appalling and off-putting, catered exclusively to the fan-fic obsessed mindset, which may explains its ratings.

noor Nov 23 2023 4:07 am Well, it's the first and last sageuk I'll watch. It is a classic, well-made, well-performed melodrama with well-sketched out and memorable characters, beautiful BGMs and cinematography, and even though it's tragic throughout, I did not mind the tears.

The attention to detail and tragic-comic aspects in showing the lives of court ladies and sisterhood, court politics, intrigues and controversies, the grandfather/King's dementia, the longing of the ML (CP, later King) for this 'lowly' woman (who would've been otherwise forgettable in a sea of 700 available women and girls, and noble consorts), and the FL's resolution to 'stay in her place' and have a bit of freedom (especially since she could never be equal to the CP/King), all made sense.

Considering that this was a fictionalized version of a true story where the King asked a court lady 3 times in 14 years to be a consort and she kept rejecting him, only to accede when he chose her officially as an edict/ command in his and her 30s and then lived with her as the only woman in his life for 6 years before she died. Considering that this was unheard of for rulers, is what makes this retelling - as embellished and mysterious as it may be - worthwhile.

It made for a great drama, tears and joy and fear. Everyone and everything (including that CGI tiger) made sense.

But the drama should've shown ML/King interacting with his next-born heir (with the next selected concubine) 14 years later. They showed everyone except his next 'family' who outlived him.

The King's 'wish' / dream at the end of reuniting with the FL and her openly 'loving' him by showering him with hugs and kisses which she never initiated even as his consort was IMO just his wish and longing to be openly loved by her like he did. It wasn't the afterlife. I doubt FL would've chosen to be with the ML in HER afterlife FOREVER!!!! She probably would've chosen everyone else and her freedom over seeing him (okay maybe she would've met him but she wouldn't have 'chosen' to be with him forever as he longs for and achieves in HIS dream of afterlife on death bed). Just like it was mostly a one-sided love, it was a one-sided dream / hallucination from his death bed/ death.

Most of the drama was morbid, dire and hopeless with warmth brooding over it. But whatever it was, as painful and wistful as it was, it was great to watch it.

Get in trouble, beg for forgiveness, peace for a while, get in trouble again. I think they could have done more with the story on that part. The leads respect each other so far and their chemistry is almost tangible. The acting skills are superb.

RebeccaC Sep 26 2023 9:33 pm Yes, this story was frustrating at times but it was worth watching for me because I was interested to see to what degree the MLFLs would have the courage to act outside the constraints of their respective social classes. It wasn't much but this highlighted for me how much progress both women and me have made with regard to freeing themselves from cruel social norms. Most of the acting was superb but the FL's vacant large eyes, even when she was verbally expressing something passionate, were no match for Lee Junho's acting.

For me deok-Im was more than brave,i can't imagine the pain of wanting to desperately love and be love and at thesame time must protect both herself and him by staying apart i totally understand her. And the prince I am in love with his character we dont have so many men who have such passion in love its a beautiful movie. I love the mix of reality and fiction in it. The thrill and romance is out of this world. I must commend the cast for this. More of this please

Shlreen Mar 30 2023 11:28 pm This drama shows the reality and painful side of palace life. The rules enforced on women living in the palace are very harsh but real, unlike other dramas. I don't know why people dislike Deok Im, but I think Deok Im is a very relatable character who values her freedom but chose love in the end which eventually brought her sadness. Because she truly loved the king, living outside as a normal commoner wouldn't give her true happiness either. As she explained to the king, it was her choice because she wanted to be with him. I would say this drama is one of a kind and is worth watching. However, it's the type of drama I wouldn't repeat because of how sad and heartbreaking it is.

It’s like the writer trying so hard to kill Deok Im character by pinpointing that court ladies cannot choose lives of their own. Actually the story from the beginning, there’s no any clue that Deok Im cannot accept palace rule or court ladies’ way of living as much that she could let herself traumatic till die. At the end, she was disappointed about the palace rule relating to her friend’s death sentence. Besides, suddenly she was value companion, court ladies than her husband King. Ending irrational.

However, those parts showcased his immense skills. Just that it might not be very good for his emotional well-being, just as it was killing me watching. Then again, it could be just his demand on himself. I am a fan of Kim Soo Hyun and missing him. Looking at how skillful Lee Joon-Ho had performed , it'll not be a surprise if he replaces Kim SH. Ana Jun 08 2022 1:41 am If you’re like me and don’t like politics in shows (even royal politics) there will be a lot of scenes to skip but I think it’s worth it. The last 5 episodes especially had me screaming at my phone in a good way. A lot of people say the main actress is difficult but I think she plays a very interesting and realistic role about having to loose things to gain love. I love their chemistry and really recommend this show!!

I love Duk Im and really felt sorry for her. She was really genuinely happy before she spends the night with the king. She loves being a court lady, values her freedom, prioritizes herself. She pointed out for how many times that she wont exchange that.

For me, it would have been better if she chooses to remain as a court lady where she genuinely lives her life to the fullest. Being loved by her friends and spending time as they grow old. ? i mean this is wholesome...

Nevertheless, I really love this drama. The casts were amazing and they portrayed their characters well. Though at first few eps., I found the female lead weird; however, as the story continues, she was really fit for it. I loved her beautiful smile and big eyes which I found weird at first. I will surely watch her other dramas.

However the king has also made sacrifices for his love for her... Can't she do the same.... Also I really dislike the last episode where the female protagonist died and even her child... I think its better the drama ends in episode 16... That episode 17 is full of sadness.. Though it turn out to be just a dream... I don't is necessary to include such an episode... Anyway.. I really like red sleeve... But my favorite artist in the drama is Lee joon ho... He's so wonderful..

I feel like this drama is for people who are willing to get immersed into the characters and the story itself. If you're only looking for a feel-good drama, this isn't it.

The cast, their acting, and directing were all perfect for me. Before watching this drama, you mustn't have any expectations on the romance because it's a melodrama. SPOILER! It was supposed to be about the life of the women inside the palace but regrettably, they focused more on the Crown Prince's emotions and the politics in the palace. That was the only flaw of this drama. They failed to explain Deokim's actions and as a viewer, undertood her only on the last episodes. If you can bear to watch her acting on the first episodes, you'll see how her emotions changed as she grew older. You can feel the longing, pain, and love through San and Deokim's eyes only. The actors did very well and the drama (except the script) was very high quality.

KST Feb 21 2022 4:30 am I just finished watching this drama yesterday. It was really a nice series with a bit sad story of a court lady and a king. Actually I feel very sorry for the king because he desperately love the girl though he could not have loved by Deok im as he was expected. Anyway I do not say that Doek im did not love the prince but she did not like to break her freedom. Anyway this drama shows the loneliness of the lives of the court lady at that time who were lived unmarried and could not have loved for someone who they wished.Court ladies were suffered because they have to obey others' commands. Anyhow the king loved Deok im thus I think Deok im had to love the prince despite losssing her freedom. Anyway it would be better if the story had been a little bit more romance in the middle. Anyway this is a melodrama. So this is the nature of the story. Lee se young and lee jun ho act very naturally here. Specially jun hi's acting is perfect. This was my first time watching a drama of jun ho. I think he is a good actor. The other actors also act very well. This drama's later part is a bit messed but the beginning was really interesting. I recommend this drama to all kdrama lovers specially to those who like to watch melodramas than watching historical dramas even because this drama is better to be known as a melodrama than saying a historical drama. Saranghae!!!

Apart from this, the cast are amazing! The acting & directing is on point I can see why ppl hyped it so much definitely the chemistry between the two leads is 100%! It's definitely not the best I've seen & not even in the top 10 historical dramas but it definitely worth watching

Red sleeve is a melodrama, so its central core romance is definitely Slow Burn type. For slow burn romance, Longing ,Anger and Jealousy are the main ingredients and they are definitely well portrayed by our two main leads . Personally, the Gaze is everything. That Gaze is the thing , some audience of the drama even question the real life relationship of the two main actors ,Junho and Lee Seyoung.

Also a good drama is not only about plot , acting, directing and music score are also parts of the drama.

The plot is the weakest link of the drama, but it's above average in terms of story writing . Not only the major characters but also the minor ones are well developed and they have lives of their own.

The Acting from main leads and all supporting characters are well portrayed. You may be annoyed by female lead's acting in early episodes . But they are like 17 and 18 years old respectively in early part of the drama. So immature and adolescent nature of the character is portrayed.

Later, when she becomes a concubine, she looks so mature that we miss her playful self ,running freely in the palace in early episodes.

The directing is the best part of the drama in my opinion. The color, poetic presentation of flowers ,shadows and hidden feelings are definitely my fav parts of the drama. It's almost like watching a painting or reading a poem. The enjoyment depends on your own interpretation.

For the music, the drama doesnt use OST so much in its scenes. So you are a viewer who enjoys listening to OST in your fav scenes, it will be a disappointment. But the drama uses background music effectively to elevate its scenes, so for those who enjoy the drama, BGM are the tracks on our must listen list.

For the OST, the 9 OSTs tone changed over the course of the drama( From happy to Sad ) according to the plotline, so after watching the drama, if you want to reminisce the drama, you can listen to it.

The old dramas like Jumong, Jewel in the palace, YiSan are more like Biography. ( Slow and steady with no dramatic plotline ).

Lately , Youthful historical fusion Sageuks are produced like The King's Affection, Hwarang and Moonlight Drawn by clouds. They give youthful and fluffy romance with modern sensibilities . They are like modern dramas in historical settings.

Red Sleeve is neither of the above. It's a melodrama based on true history. Its a tragic romance like some old K dramas, What happened in bali ,I am sorry I love You.

The most similar drama I can think is 7 days queen.

Red Sleeve also has strong korean taste .(It's a domestic success ) It does not explain well about historical facts, cause all koreans have known these facts, so international audience who don't have much knowledge about korean history will have difficulty in seeing this drama.

It's a drama with full of homework for audience.

So knowing korean history will be a plus point to enjoy the drama.

Well Personally , I am interested in Yeongjo, Sado and Yisan / Jeongjo love and hate family relationship . This is the story of the century.

Also the story is based on the novel. The novel is written from FL point of view. The ones who like this drama like me also read the novel.

The drama is told from ML point of view while novel is from FL's ,so it's a complete set of story combining these two.

Dont get the hype Feb 16 2022 8:47 pm I tried watching but dropped at ep 2 then seeing hype tried to watch again from ep 3, went till ep 7 or 8 and still not engaged and dropped. I dont really get the hype. It was a very mediocre drama i liked faith and king in love, hwarang better saeguks. Still wondering what did i miss here? Whh is it so hyped when random incidents were happening.

Feb 15 2022 10:26 am Its been almost more than a month since the drama ended and still here I am rewatching the drama for the fourth time and each time is different as I get to notice different details and come up with different realizations. I don't buy it when people say that LSY did not do enough in acting Duk-Im, for me, she handled the role perfectly, I mean it's not easy to translate emotions and actions of a dynamic character, from a funny and cheerful teenager to a mature woman unable to express her emotion because she bounded by her society of that time (Lee Se-young's acting, her eyes just overflows with those unexpressed emotions, I'm never been this in love with an actress's acting skill). No praise is enough to commend Lee Se-young's acting, everything just fall into their right place. I just find it saddening that some people only appreciate Junho's acting when Lee Se-young also deserves, maybe even more, that kind of praise. Finally, I find it ridiculous for people to drop this drama and act like a critic of some sort after only watching a few episodes, you can't just act like you grasp the depth of this drama just by watching a few ep and dropping it. I mean, don't get me wrong, you can drop it but never ever act like you know everything about it, especially its depth. As someone, who watched kdramas far as I can remember, of course there are dramas that I chose to dropped but never once did I act like a know-it-all-critic... I mean, I don't have that kind of audacity. Yes, I am commenting to defend the drama from these know-it-all-critics, because how can I not? This drama is just so...beautiful can't even describe it... only those who have intently watched know what I mean.

Forrest Feb 13 2022 11:41 pm I just finished watching the last ep, and wow... did not expect myself to cry this much as I knew what was going to happen so I thought I prepared myself enough but nope. Truly heartbreaking how Deok Im's cheerfulness faded away during the last few eps. I read so many analyses from everyone in The Red Sleeve community and I'm just so happy to hear so many similar and new insights! I specifically like the theme of female empowerment that's being talked about here as the drama did an excellent job demonstrating the hardships women had to face in the past. Seeing the last few eps, I was able to empathize more with the previous "evil" court lady who was not in favour of kings. In ep 17 when Queen Dowager describes the palace as nothing but a "luxurious prison", it really made me realize and understand the hatred of the said evil court lady. I can't even imagine being in their position; having little to no freedom to be your authentic self but to devote your whole mind and body to the king. Then there's also the power imbalance between the mighty King San, and the humble Deok Im. As mentioned in the previous commentaries regarding the scene where San put his hands on Deok Im's throat to assert his dominance and power over her, I admire the drama for not shying away from showing us how scary someone with absolute power can be. That scene made us question whether San would be the kind of king to abuse his power and force even his most beloved person to "belong" to him. But from what I've seen from that part all the way to the last ep, he proved to be someone who doesn't (Thankfully Court Lady Seo helped him shy away from that kind of power abuse). And in addition to that chokehold scene, I think it doesn't only touch on power imbalance, but also how San was affected and therefore influenced by his experiences of being physically and emotionally abused as a child. That scene demonstrated how years of being tormented by your family members can manifest in you, even if the last thing you want is to be that kind of human. And so what I love about Deok Im apart from the many things I love about her is that she knew and understood this. She knew that San could be terrifying and forceful at times but she held her ground in many of those times, rejecting him with all her might, despite wanting to give in to him. However, as headstrong as she was, I like that she found ways to comfort him and to accept him and all his flaws. Even though Deok Im died earlier than San, I truly believe the story spun around her; her life, her challenges, how her love was nurturing and enduring. How brave and courageous she was despite being a "lowly maid". Her loyalty to the king but her defiance against him as well. And that regardless of how intense her convictions were, she still chose love over everything knowing that it could literally suck the life out of her. I believe she died because of extreme heartache which gave me a massive one too. Really am rooting for Junho and Seyoung's extended success in the future. I'm incredibly thankful to the whole cast, staff, director(s), producer(s), music crew, cinematography crew, and the rest! The whole drama is a gem, and of course the people behind it too.

Dae Feb 10 2022 7:09 am I'm a huge fan of historical dramas but I really don't get what is the hype with this one. Did not like the female lead much, her expressions are pretty much the same no matter what so it got boring pretty quick. I stuck through because of the king, at least he had different expressions. The plot was also kinda messy and everywhere like there's no single direction it's heading towards. Just random things happening here and there, it doesnt make sense most of the time neither was it consistent. There was hardly any suspense or wanting to know what happens next, just lots of cheesy moments that didnt really work for me (*spoiler * : I rolled my eyes so hard when she fell into the bath, like she legit jumped herself into it while acting like she accidentally fell. the acting was just so bad). I really tried to like this drama but it is one of the worst I've ever watched. and I hardly feel like this after watching historical dramas except a few. I had to play it at 1.5x most episodes, sometimes even 2x. just 3/10 for me

I would like to commend Lee Jun Ho and Lee Se Young on their performances as well as the supporting cast. To me this was heartbreaking and beautiful. The King’s constant stuggle to stay alive, be a good King and to be loved by someone he adores. Lee Jun Ho, portrayed this role to perfection. His desperation and frustration for her to acknowledge him was done so well. To me it was as if he knew she loved him but he truly wanted to hear her say it. Her struggle to hold onto her own identity but loving him in despite her misgivings. He cherished her always, right to the very end.

Jen Feb 05 2022 10:31 pm I was enjoying the romantic tension between Yi San and Deok Im until the library scene at the beginning of Episode 8 where a jealous Yi San (who saw Deok Im earlier in the day with her brother but incorrectly assumed he might be a romantic interest to her) gets jealous and asks if all of Deok Im belongs to him. When she replies the only part of her that he can’t just own is her will and heart, he grabs her neck as if to strangle her and reminds her that he can control whether she lives or dies and not to forget that!?. This is where it stopped being a cute romance for me and I cannot seem to continue on. That’s a very disturbing action and words so I don’t see how anyone watching was able to get past that to think this was a romance! If Yi San had just been angry or pissy sounding saying that he could decide whether she lives or dies and not to forget that it might have been one thing but to wrap your hand around someone’s neck and kind of squeeze it while saying this is very violent and disturbing. Not impressed that nobody has commented on this and sad that this kind of a scene was put in so early in the drama. Unless someone tells me this is explained or resolved later on, don’t intend to continue.

sun Jan 29 2022 2:24 pm As an avid fan of sageuk drama and Korean history, I would rate Red Sleeve 8/10 given the plotline, script, historical details are all amazing! The details are also realistic and not too far from facts (given this is a fiction). Love the characters as well, except, I wish they would give a backstory on Crown Prince Sado a little bit since this drama being set during King Youngjo ruling. P/s: If you’re interested, can watch korean movie The Throne.

The only problem I had in this drama is romance (in the aspect of King/Prince-Court lady). It felt off somehow? They failed in proving that power & love can co-exist among different level of power in the dynasty. The power disparity between San & Deokim wasn’t properly addressed resulting in confusion of their romance. Also I’m very sorry, I think at some parts, Lee Junho didn’t carry and convey Lee San feelings very well, leaving unsatisfactory performance.

Otherwise, I really enjoyed. It is realistic and detail-wise, it is at par with some other sageuk legends like 6FD, scarlet hearts, deep rooted tree, eyc

Does it have a happy end? Yes. Because that's what really happened in history.

I love Moonlight and Mr.Queen, but historically their ends were more tragic than YiSan and DeokIm. So it depends whether we want to delude ourselves or not.

@shairli : She loves him, but not enough to lose her way of life over him. She has to wait all day everyday for His highness to grace her with his presence. So she kept saying No. But why did she say yes? She loves him that much that she can't bear never seeing him again for the rest of her life. She said it in the last episode,"Don't you know, if I don't love you I would have done anything to get away." So I see it the opposite of selfishness. I have seen both of them sacrificing themselves for each other. She didn't want to stay. but she did for him (probably imagining that psycho Hwabin keeping him company) :-D

I thought it was well done and the acting by the two leads, and the old king, was exceptional. Definitely depicted what life in the Royal court would have been for the young maids. I really like historical drama with this kind of ending, idk it's just that it leaves a mark on my heart and these dramas are the one that is very unforgettable. OK this is my first time commenting to a kdrama and I watched a lot! Hands down if someone asked me to recommend a k historical drama to watch, this drama will be it. I mean the pacing, acting, story, script were all greatly delivered. I binge watch the episodes in 3-4 days, normally some dramas I had to skip episodes or just drop it entirely because the story is predictable, so cliche, pointless fillers, unstable weak characters and poor story telling or the worse, it effing drags and just go in circles. But not this one,this probably the best k historical drama in 2021 and they truly deserved those awards so well done. Each episodes will get you hook and the slice of romance, politics and comedy is well balanced. Even the supporting actors were given a chance to shine in their own way and their characters was a bit realistic. I get why some viewers were frustrated with Deok Im not saying 'I love you' to San, I was too but if you watch long enough you should be able to understand how their personality works. San is very vocal about his feelings whilst Deok Im expresses her feelings through actions. There is a scene where Deok Im ask San if he ver thought of living an ordinary life and San said No the thought never came to his mind, this just shows how strong his character is as a king, I mean as expected he knows what his duties are. But at the same time it's also a scene that shows how Deok Im love him, like immersely. The fact that she got to hear the brutal honest answer that she didn't really want to hear but accepted it - - I mean that is quite deep. She did try at first to not fall in love with him cause she knows how it's going to be but in the end she sacrificed and accepted everything for San. Its sad cause due to their circumstances him being a king, he couldnt really reciprocate that deeper feeling but he did try his best. Overall I was quite happy with the bittersweet ending, the last episode was damn, I think I was so immerse with everything and I really felt the feels. The red sleeve entire crew production deserve a standing ovation for this. Everyone executed their roles so well that us viewers really felt the emotions and empathise with the characters. What I really like about this drama is it doesn't have the perfect happy ending, the leads had their roller-coaster rides and they know it's gonna be a bumpy one but in the end, they cherished and savour the happy moments, that's probably the morale lesson of this show which we can apply in real life.

KT Jan 18 2022 5:52 am This is the first time we saw Lee Jun Ho in a drama. We are glad we discovered him through this drama!! And Lee Se Young too! We are hooked and still cannot let go of the drama. We still rewatch our favorite scenes everyday. Not to mention the cast - cast is 10/10. We thought we were going to lose Court Lady Seo in the middle of the drama huhu. She was lovely too!

Drama is well written - it was engrossing. Congrats for bagging the awards. Well deserved!

Everything is just excellent :) we want more of SanDeok! Excited for the spin off. :)

Steffanie Jan 16 2022 7:22 am @Kruathip feminism is not the way you described in your comment. That is a common misconception. Feminism does NOT mean over powering men or hating them. Feminism is the support of equality among genders. To put it in simple terms, "women can also do what men can do".

Not saying "I love you" because they think they will be submitting to the other person is not feminism. It is either radicalism, or a psychological problem.

If men were portrayed as slow witted or dumb in the show, maybe that is how the writer intended it to be in order to create the story as it was supposed to be. A lot of movies and shows depict women as stupid especially in horror and romcoms. But that is how it's supposed to be. Otherwise the story would totally change.

I am about to watch this drama but I came here to read comments first. I do not get why people are having issues with someone who couldn't say "I love you".

Sometimes people do not need to say they love someone because they already show it through their actions. There are people who say they love someone but either doesn't really mean it, or show the opposite. Wouldn't you rather have the first, than the latter who say empty words?

-Slow, but well scripted and acted.

-All men actors are portrayed as slow-witted, dumb, inability to understanding of people around them, especially women.

-Secret women's society. Set up to protect themselves from men. Yet, they force women to join and torture them if they don't, or don't submit to other women's views.

-The main actress never once tells her "lover" (the King) that she loves him - even after so many years and his continued request to hear it just once.

The main actress and her three friends are scripted to say to never say I love you to a man because that means they are submitting to the man and that can't happen.

So many underlined feminist lines in this movie.

-The Palace is a prison.

-The main actress is in woe because she had to give up so much (being a palace maid) to be the #1 love interest of the King who adored her...what the...??

Have watched over 100 k-dramas. This was the first "Anti-Love" story I've seen.

I cried like I’ve never cried when ending this drama. Those tears were a result of so much emotions. I was just so unbelievably sad for every single person involved in the drama and also sad that that masterpiece of a drama finally ended. I just know I’ll be having withdrawal all week and it’ll be awhile until I enjoy another drama, because wow. I have so so so much to say but I’ll just say this, Duk Im is one of the greatest woman lead I’ve ever watched since I’ve started watch dramas a decade ago. The stance she took until the very end of the drama makes me so proud and so desperately sad for her. This drama so so much more than a love story, it has taught me so many lessons in life and I just really really really want to thank the writer for sharing such an imperfect and much needed story of two people desperately in love while trying to manoeuvre life in the best way they see fit. Junho and Seyoung did an Amazing job at telling San and Duk Im’s story, amazing job. I felt absolutely everything. Everything! Junho is a monster at acting. Monster. The raw emotions in his eyes were simply amazing while being as breathtaking as talented makes this drama absolutely amazing. There’s so so so much more I want to say but my head is still in jumbles after that last episode. I hope someone can articulate all the emotions I’m feeling and have felt watching this drama, because I absolutely will never be able to. I’ll never ever get over this drama. Absolutely best drama of 2021, no best drama ever. Wow just wow

i hope someone will also write/produce a drama of the story of yi sun (king sukjong) and yi geum (king yeonjo) who both fell in love with low born concubines. would be nice to watch how their love stories and life struggles evolve in the minds of the writers. both kings were smart and good kings as written in wikipedia. king sukjong deeply fell in love in dong yi.. in the kdrama dong yi.. but was mostly about dong yi. i do hope that one day, i'd be able to watch a drama on them.

Whe she asked him to just pass by when they meet in their next life, she was clearly saying she would choose him all over again, so for her to choose herself they need to ignore eachother in their next chance. A tragic way of saying I love you. Too bad he didn't understand her words and her actions of love, and suffered all his life thiking he trapped her in his arms.

In the real history, DK's feelings remains a mistery even for historians, she refused the King for 15 yrs and they just got together cuz he used his power as a King, that's what makes everything a mistery around her feelings, but I prefer to think they loved eachother in their own ways. Maybe San loved more, that's a common thing in love, but I think she loved him as well. San would never suffer the way he suffered for yrs after her passing, having no other woman in his heart until his death, If he wasn't deeply loved by her.

I loved the last scene as well, it was a beautiful conclusion showing us their own eternity together, Junho and Se Young's expressions made everything more powerful.

I consider Lee Joon-I am very good at playing a fair and principled ruler and Lee Se-Young excellent as always! Lsyg doesn’t need words to act. I also really enjoyed Kang Hoon and Jang Hee-Jin as queen. I think the drama has in itself an added value given by the magnificent historical relationship between Yi San and Sung Deok-Im and in itself has been well represented in the form of a drama. The mysterious end of the king conveys a sense of great melancholy and at the same time happiness. I find simple and at the same time brilliant the conclusion with the dream-memory-afterlife that interprets at the same time the flow of life, the fleeting life and the infinite circularity of life! Love it!

I really really really so much love this drama though it gave me too much heartbreak in the last episode. Well it's partly my fault though upon learning that their love story is tragic in the history, i still expected that they will give this a happy ending (they do have a happy ending, but in afterlife). I don't wanna blame all that happen to San becuz every choices they have will still lead them miserably. I'm in deep pain, i wish i could tell them that if they got reincarnated in modern time, there will be no such laws that will control them to have each other as their own.

In the end she gave up her freedom and i dont blame her, she tried enough. She knows her life will go downhill the moment she made that choice.

Someone said the king cant do anything for her. Ok, he is a king and she is not even the queen. He cant just help her and neglect his duty. He loves her but he cant just go against the law to help her friend, and she accepted it anyway. He is a wise king in my opinion.

I love both characters and their love story is not cliche at all.

shiningKat Jan 03 2022 3:14 am It's been a long time since I've fell in love with a historical drama. Junho and Seyoung's chemistry is top notch in this drama. I am glad that I have been a fan of Junho's works since Good Manager which led me to really watching this drama.

I've been smitten from the early episodes. I am in love in both character development of Junho and Seyoung, especially Seyoung's firmness in what she wants for herself. I highly recommend this for those looking for something typical but a new take to historical drama. It's a typical plotline to have a King and Court Maid love story but how the characters were portrayed here and how their belief sticks to the end is amazing.

Spoiler: Loved and hated Episode 17. A part of me wants to pretend that episode didn't exist but a part of me loved how strongly the characters are portrayed on the last episode.

Truly a masterpiece and am not shocked at the bunch of awards this drama got at the year end.

I had read the story a bit before watching the show but I didn't realize just how much Dok Im would cherish her freedom. She ultimately did end up choosing San over her freedom, but she knew that he wouldn't choose her over his duties as a king. I was particularly heartbroken and frankly angry with Dok im for telling San not to approach her in their next lives. But if I had to think about it, maybe I can still see her approaching San on her own, as her own choice and out of her own will. She wants to live the life the way she always imagined, and maybe this time, San will have to make the compromise of his own values for her. I didn't really understand that part, or even If I understood, maybe I didn't want to accept it as a die hard romantic. I just really want to believe that they find each other in their next lives, out of the shackles of the palace and it's duties and they can have all those moments that they missed. That would be my take.

Protect her in the sense that if she will become a concubine no one can easily touch her. Her status will change.She is not just a courtmaid anymore but someone connected to the King already. San really wanted the best for his people. Giving up the thrown will make him a selfish King. And we all know Deok Im doesn't want that too. What can I see is despite Deok Im rejecting him, in the end she chose to be with him because she love him. One painful part is she decided to sacrifice her freedom knowing the fact that she can never have San alone. Well the important thing is they both knew the love they have for each other.

At first I thought that it will be so heartbreaking if they will not end up together but I regret it now, I think it is okay for them not being together. Love is sacrifice and Yi-San can't do that for her. This is really not an ordinary Sageuk drama, this is the first Sageuk drama I've watched that the King did not sacrifice his title just to choose a simple life with his lover. All in all, it is a touching story and wonderful story. Kudos to all the cast! You all really did well!

Mithzy Jan 02 2022 8:32 am (SPOILERS!) I see people not liking San's actions or not liking Deok Im's actions. For me they were both realistic in their own way. San is a king, he has a vision for the people and he knows that he will fail every human being in the country if he chooses to put Deok Im first. He can't do it. After learning what loving someone means, regardless of their status, he tries to accept that Deok Im will never be his but it's difficult because he sees her all the time. I think the last point was the fact that the Queen decided to use her against him and he never wanted that to happen again. Still he did give Deok Im the choice to leave his bedroom but he would not be able to see her again, she would have to leave, for him and also for her own safety. Fair enough. Deok Im doesn't want to be a concubine which is perfectly understandable. She knows perfectly well who San is, what kind of king he wants to be and she admires that of him. That's one of the reasons she loves him because he actually cares for his subjects. But she knows that being with him won't make her happy. All the things she wants to do, ultimately her freedom is the one thing she desires in life and as much as she loves him she doesn't want to give her life up. Yet, in the end when she has to decide whether to see him never again or become his concubine she chooses him. Knowing she will never be truly happy. And everything that happened after that, I truly think he loved her the best he could and she tried to be as happy as she could but their circumstances didn't allow them to be truly happy. And that broke my heart. Deok Im could never get over the fact that she was trapped and San was not fully hers and San always had doubts whether she actually loved him or not. In the end I think no outcome would have made them truly happy. And that is really sad. But also realistic.

For love. And the person won't do same for you because he doesn't have to make these sacrifices. In the end Lee San did not understand Deok Im, it's not that she didn't love him but he demanded too much. I almost cried when Lee San said 'You are mine' and Deok Im was sad about how he wasn't hers. That was why she imagined and wished he was a normal person who could also be her's and not the King who could never be her's. The fact that she loved her friends so much proves all she wanted was a relationship that she didn't have to sacrifice herself when the other person wouldnt. She chose herself every time she rejected the King till he persuaded her to chose him over herself when he didn't even give up his reputation to protect her friend. She knew he wasn't the type to give anything up but will only demand from her...

She knows her life is gonna be ruined if she accepts to go in bed with the king. There is no return for her. She said it in the dramas several times. She just wants to work as a court maid and doesn’t want to be a concubine who the king visits occasionally only to have sex with her. She would have to endure lonely times in the palace waiting for the king not even being sure if he would come to her.. the king would have his Queen (and he had one of course) and other women because he had to have as many children as possible. So why should she endure all of that?? Yeah.. maybe she loves him too but she is realistic. The lead girl is even one of the most realistic lead girls I’ve ever seen in a drama. She knows her value until the arrogant king doesn’t leave her a chance to get away. I hated him in the last two episodes. If he really loved her he would let her be but instead.. he made her his concubine and with other words his hostage. One of the most arrogant leads I’ve ever seen. Junho‘s acting is really good but I hated his character who made the girl suffer so much just because he wanted her by his side. So those people saying unnecessary things about the girl should think twice

the last episode is just so good. especially the last scenes, i cant describe how pure and beautiful it is. i have forgotten how long i have watched a drama that portrayed a very satisfying and beautiful ending. ep 17 made me cry throughout the whole episode.

The show gives you a lot to think about. Is love enough? The chemistry and acting from ALL the actors (gender neutral use) is out of this world. Every single person delivered their role, impeccably!

Should I be heartbroken because of the San's desperation, inevitability, and one-sided love, or because of the Deok Im's life she couldn't live, or the fate of both of them? I prefer to be happy for them. I can say that even though this drama pissed me off in ep 14-15, it was the best Korean historical drama so far. I will never forget all the feelings it gave me. It became eternity. Greatest thanks to Junho for bringing me here and for making this story so beautiful. As said earlier, this is a masterpiece

This is all about court ladies who end their lives stucking in same palace. It's all about a girl who really didn't want to a person who has to wait for her loves that she she did. She wanted to be free like other court ladies. The reason she never wanted to be King's consort because she knew about her end very well. In the beginning of drama head court lady showed her that how it ends being a consort or  concubine. In her very end she waited for her friends not Yi San.

So that's why I think they named the drama red sleeves cuff instead of giving it another fancy name. Wow writers are really something. Instead of giving a happy ending they showed us how it ended like she predicted. Love it. Last year Mr. Queen made my ending of the year and this year Red sleeves cuff.

Bunga Jan 01 2022 8:07 pm I watched the last episode over and over, and I always cried. It is such a great drama and hearthbreaking at the same time. One of the best Sageuk I ever watched. I think I need more time to get over it... I believe the ending is an afterlife, Yi San chose to be with Ui Bin at the end, he died peacefully and came back to his loved one's arms.

The emotions and chemistry between the two leads are super, really love them! I recommed you all to watch Dong Yi - Haechi - The Red Sleeves... it's like a saga!

Saranghae Jan 01 2022 2:16 pm This might sound like a SPOILER---but okay, I guess it's fine to write a review that's been ringing in my head (maybe a bit long).

I love the ending, and I like the depiction of Deok Im where she can't get out of her comfort zone to be with her friends and enjoy time as a teenager who wants to stay free, because she actually feels a dilemma. She knows very well how unfree she can be when she becomes the king's woman, with a past involving her father being executed as a bodyguard for the late crown prince Sado (the point is, she doesn't want to end up like her family).

Because of this drama, I had to read the history, and I had expected that all endings would be the same as history, I was too prepared if it ended in tears. At three in the morning I watched this after it was released a few hours from Korean time. Episode 17 made me cry, because of the death of Yi Sun, Deok Im, then the King who ended up not being enthusiastic about living his life, until he finally caught up with Deok Im.

(╥﹏╥) I thought the last episode 17 would see them reunited in modern times, it doesn't matter if it's just a few minutes or seconds, I really want to see them reunited. I think this drama deserves to get a 15% or even 20% rating. I Love This Drama!!!

han Jan 01 2022 7:42 am this drama is so good!!! the execution of king jeongjo and uibin's love story is so good. some people may hate the slowburn depicted in the drama but i think it's definitely necessary. afterall the king endured and waited for 15 years (?) in real life before he and uibin (deok im) became together.

The King clearly loves her and even told her so but she rejects his love because she doesn't want to be his concubine? I don't get it. What does she want? She clearly loves him too then why pretend she doesn't? Even when she was out of the Palace she wasn't really doing much. I don't get her character towards the end. When the King asks her how she feels she just keeps quiet? Why can't she just say clearly what she wants....Argh...

Noona Dec 29 2021 9:59 am I have been a fan of K series for five years and watched maybe 100+ of them. The Red Sleeve is one of the best historical K dramas I've ever watched. Like one of fellow commenters, I also started watching and then dropped the King's Affection. Though both stories portray the court politics and the power play realistically, the story line of the Red Sleeve simply makes more sense. Also script writing is really good. I really loved the scene when Yi San tried to confess his love for Dok Im and she tried to evade it using orange as a symbol of their love. The viewers are treated with every taste; love, action, humour, politics. I will miss it when the series ends.

I only watch king's affection and the red sleeve this year but i drop king's affection, the beginning of the episode is good, then in the middle i lost interest, it doesn't good as the start, in my opinion it getting annoying (the story also the characters) so i stopped watching it, but the red sleeve is different, every character in the red sleeve really good, they act like they didnt act, they immersed the character so well, i really love them all, everyone is amazingly talented, especially Lee Se-young Lee Jun-ho, Lee Deok-hwa, and Jang Hee-jin, also Jang Hee-jin, ahhhh I don't know everyone really did a great job, I'm amazed. But be careful this drama is suffocating. This is really best drama of the year, a highly recommend drama, you have to watch it or else you're gonna regret it. The chemistry of the actors and actresses is so real and deep, also if you're gonna watch this drama, don't forget to also watch the behind the scene. You will get mixed feelings, suffocated, etc but the behind the scene will heal you! cuz it's sooo hilarious hahaha The relationship of the actors, really showed and the actors and the filming crew are like family, every behind the scene/making video is really hilarious, wholesome, etc. I've never waiting for a behind the scene/making video asmuch as im waiting for the new episode, this drama is the best in eveey aspects. You will love it.

However, he dies, so her son does not become the next King. She ends up dying a few months after her son's death. Another concubine's son becomes the next King (Yi Gong / Sunjo). Basically Joseon's demise can be attributed beginning with Yi San's early death as the Courts gain more power and the next Kings are known as "scarecrow" kings as they don't have enough support/power. Yi Gong was only 10 years old when he ascended the thrown and basically never could be a "true" king.

I feel like their ending will be somehow connected to their first scene together, when the late King’s loved concubine died. Historically Sung Uibin died three yrs after becoming Jeongjo’s concubine and four months after they lost their son and crown prince. He suffered a lot as she was the only woman he really loved. Sad or not, it will be definitely a beautiful ending to watch.

Their second son ascended the throne becoming the 21st King of Joseon whose reign lasted 52 years. Note; she was 17 when she gave birth to her first son. So the actress Lee Se Young who is 29 is playing a 16 or 15 year-old. San was 9 years her senior.

ML and FL have this chemistry that makes the drama more special and worth the watch. Such great actors as well. The whole cast arr superb all i wish now is for the writer and director to give us the happy ending that all the viewers

Saida Dec 27 2021 4:16 am @Brittany Strangely enough, so far I have really supported all of Dok Im's steps and decisions, but for me in episodes 14 and 15, they completely destroyed Deok Im and the drama, all magic disappeared. She is an arrogant character who plays with a man, even though he is a king, only because she has the grace to make a man love him. Deok Im, who considers herself a good person and constantly accuses San of not appreciating the lives of his servants, but for her valuable people are only her friends. For our girl, nobody's life is worth anything except them. She is angry that San does not value servants just because she is a maid herself. However, it is her own ego that spews out hatred for him and blinds her love, if she has one. Our girl cannot stomach herself as a servant. In fact, the scene where everyone says that Deok Im confesses his feelings at the end drove me even more crazy. This masochist constantly asks the king to punish her, but when the new wife of the king shows real punishment when she actually encounters real life as a servant and loses the former comfort she had because of the king, she simply pulls the man's clothes who is still genuinely in love with her without saying a word? Is this confession now? Sorry, but this is the act of a 5-year-old child with personality problems, and if she does not receive professional help on time, this child will become a problem person. What a pity. It's a shame that the screenwriter has brought such a beautiful story to such a state. How did you manage to turn the woman from the tangerine scene, who knows what she wants from life, stands behind her ideas and choices, and respects both herself and the person in front of her, into such a problematic, cold, inhuman, arrogant, ignorant character? Moreover, this person describes herself as a good person. I plan to finish the drama because of Jun Ho and his great acting, but now this drama is my biggest fiasco of the year. Unfortunately, such a naively started work fell victim to ratings. To heighten the excitement, we watched how beautiful characters and very beautiful and pure love were wasted on romantic relationships that could not start. This is how the writer and director screwed up when they missed the point where they should have stopped.

I love that it tells a true story and -- from what I've read of Korean history and King Jeongjo (Yi San) -- stays fairly close to the truth as it is known (with one slight omission -- he was already married to his queen before he started taking concubines. There's no mention of her in the series). I'm thrilled with it, with the actors, with the the script, with every aspect of it. I know the real story had a tragic ending but I hope the series ends before then so it can end on a happy note. I'll really miss this series when it ends! I've been watching Korean series for over a year and I've already re-watch some of my favorites. So I'll just re-watch this one!

But it was too much politics back then.The lead actors and all actors were all amazing ! The acting was award worthy. I think they will win an award . The story line was very good. I love watching this kdrama. Definitely one of the best period drama in line with The king's affection. Both are my favorite . I give this show ten stars.

My friend who doesn't watch historical drama, for the first time, tried watching red sleeve and ended up getting addicted watching to it. A proof that this is not overrated. As per the female lead having a 'lot of time' as you said, lol,we don't have problem with that, you can't differentiate a 'little fiction' writers have put in this drama, and didn't you see the works she does as a court lady. Rewind those scenes. And yes conflicts resolved by her and audience love it, like she's the heroine in here so she gets to always protect her man. FYI, she meets the high profile people as you said because of the cirmcumstances arise in the drama. And I don't know about you but you're the only person who said cringe about every scene. You must have problem with your eyesight so better have them checked up, lol.

I only watched this because this is too popular and I got so curious. After I watched till the latest episode, I can't believe what I just watched. This show is just compilation of every kdrama set-up (not even with great execution).

You guys don't even realized that this drama has overpowered MC. Like Without Her the conflicts can't be solved.

I was laughing the whole time like "Why does she have plenty of time??" Hahaha. Like she's court lady but all she does is roam everywhere. And also Everything Fall Into Place To Her Advantage. (Like in the gunpowder scene, there has to be a kite somewhere because she already memorized it after she randomly ask the prince about it.) I find it very ridiculous.

Like she can spend a day without working, She can meet high profile people like (ehem) the King and Queen and even the Prince just because she's skilled and they can't do anything about it but to give in.

The part where she has a tattoo, that's the last straw. Like you know why does it always have to be related to her?? When she sneak into the hideout I thought she will be caught but she safely got out there without hassle and without a single scratch.

I am not mad or anything. And I'm really sorry if I sounded like I'm bashing the drama. I just can't understand the whole thing (being a Kdrama Fan for so long). And also I can't feel the chemistry between them.

I think the supporting cast like the King, Queen, the King's daughter and her son made an impact to me. They have a very good storyline. It's not forced like the MC and the Prince's right hand man (I don't know what to feel about him).

Main characters are perfect in their roles and for each other as their chemistry is palpable throughout. Early on…from childhood Duk Im demonstrated a fearless independence as a woman of righteous loyalty towards the crown prince…with no ulterior motive other than see him assume the throne and continue as an unencumbered loyal servant of integrity to both King and country. Now that the past has been reconciled with the present in chapter 15 … both now better understand each other an can move forward. I can’t wait to see them get a measure of happiness and fulfill their long suppressed yearning for one another. History aside hope some liberties were taken by the writers to stretch the truth and give us a happy ending.

I’m excited for next weeks episodes, although I’m expecting some sad scenes I know there will be some happy romantic scenes as well. ML and FL have done so good in their roles and every actor has done amazing as well.

I feel like ever since the kind passed away and 3 years went by, I lost track of the story and what was going on. Everything feels a bit rushed to me and unexplained..

1. What exactly was Hong Deoks scheming, and why did he take all those court ladies? I know he wanted someone to plant evidence to blame the queen, but why did he take all of them?

2. What happened to Hong Deoks sister? Was she actually ill and died, or did someone murder her?

3. At first I understood Why Deok Im didn't want to be a concubine. She said she didn't want to lose herself and that's not the life she wanted. I also remember the episode when she confessed that to the king. However.. I don't understand why she got so mean and nasty with him. Saying he decieved her and fighting with him, not asking him for help, stubborn and leaving the palace. Telling him she doesn't love him or see him as a man. I don't understand where all this negative emotions are coming from all of the sudden. Cause before he was King, she was always there for him and helping him. It just doesn't make sense to me.

If anyone can explain this better for me to understand, or want to share your thoughts and opinions with me, please do!

graciee Dec 20 2021 3:19 pm If LSY and LJH do not each receive a Daesang, Top Excellence or at least best couple awards, I will be so disappointed. Have been rooting for this drama since Day 1, and a little sad that it’s almost ending.

Although there aren’t many romance scenes that we may have hoped, the delivery of the intense emotions between LSY and LJH give the sense that it’s a longing sort of love but because of conventions during that time, they aren’t able to satisfy us. So when they finally do get together, it will be bittersweet, but relieving that they finally got there in the end.

As for the rest of the cast, KH for Best New Actor, JHJ for Best Supporting Actress, LDH for Golden Acting.

Farhanum Dec 20 2021 9:42 am So many part that make our viewers sad .Episode 12 make me feel crying a lot when part Princess Hwawan and Royal Secretary Jung Baek-Ik need to separate and in that part I just know Jung Baek-Ik is the adopted child of Princess Hwawan and Jung Baek-Ik needs to leave his adoptive mother makes me cry and add in the previous part Yi-San's grandfather that is King Youngjo died in Yi-San's lap after giving his last will .

However at the end of episode 12 there is a part that makes me feel overwhelmed because finally Yi-San can express his heart to propose to Deok-Im as his wife makes me a little happy and I hope Deok-Im accepts the proposal because I want see them happy together.

I don't want this story to end with a sad ending like the old story of Yi San which was aired in 2007 .The drama ends with a sad ending.

I hope in the end, Jung Bae-Ik can return to his adoptive mother. I want Yi-San and Deok-Im to have a happy ending. Many stories also have pure value. she is willing to take Bae-Ik as her adopted child and Princess Hwawan has taken good care of Bae-Ik here showing the value of an adoptive mother’s love for her adopted child.

This is the best drama .

mithzy Dec 19 2021 5:51 am Okay, lets start with the negative. Sometimes the story telling is slow, I feel like there are some useless scenes here and there. And the other part I'm slightly disappointed is that there isn't enough screen time for the leads to be together, especially in the latest episodes. We have seen 12/16 episodes and still haven't even seen a proper kiss, or a real heart to heart conversation about their honest feelings and that's slightly disappointing, for me. But that's all the negative feedback I have about this drama.

Then all the positive. The general story is really interesting. The concerns Deok Im has about becoming a concubine is very relatable, who would want to share the person they love with others. Also I like it that she is really smart and and strong and has her own opinions on life. Which brings me to my second point, I like most of the characters a lot. I found the old king and queen very interesting. And the WOW of this show is definitely the acting, all of the main actors and actresses are doing an absolutely great job in acting! I have a soft spot for Junho and may be biased but I think he deserves an award for this show! The way he can act out all the different emotions his character is feeling, it's amazing!

His screentime was very limited and he didn't have any impactful role in this series, but somehow he has left a deep impression in me. His air of tranquility captivated me so much. I honestly hope he gets more screentime in the series. He seems clever and resourceful, always thinks far ahead before planning or scheming something, unlike his rash mother. Unfortunately, he died just like that.

The second was when the king saw his son, Crown Prince Sado, during the last moment of his life. When he said, “See, I fulfilled my promise, you brat.” And the way Sado nodded at him, as if satisfied and welcoming his father to the other world. I believe the late king lived a life full of regrets. He killed all the people dear to him, his son, his wife. Now he joins them in the afterlife.

I guess the remaining 4 episodes will show how Hong Deok-Ro slowly changes (actually he has been wicked and petty all this time) into the man he hates, the previous Second State Councilor. From the preview we can see he had brought his sister for Queen candidacy, just like he had hoped all this time. I'm waiting for the truth to be revealed, that the one who saved San all this time is not him, but Deok-Im all along. There's also Head Court Lady Jo's niece. Still so many enemies hiding in the dark.

Hyowon Dec 17 2021 10:03 pm I think the last episode (Ep11) needs to be applauded. I was amazed by the intensity of all casts' acting. It was a stellar performance. They all speak through their gazes, their eyes, and even through the slightest movements and gestures.

I honestly got goosebumps when the Queen was mad at Princess Hwawan. Her eyes truly tell Hwawan not to mess with the wrong person. She is someone to be feared. Her charisma is no joke. She remains passive most of the time, but takes action when she thinks she'll benefit from it. It's a calculative persona, but that's what politics truly is.

And I really hope the king realizes in his sane state of mind, how much San loves him and respects him, not only as a king but as his grandfather. I'm touched by San's scolding to Hong Deok-Ro and his speech in front of the king.

Unfortunately, Head Court Lady Jo now has no need for Deok-Im so her life can be in danger due to all the secrets she now knows. Deok-Im has been involved too deeply in Court politics. Too deep and too much for a maid.

I know she does her roles very well and she proved it again in this drama.. I am still waiting for her to become concubine though,... she is a great actress I must say and he does well everytime, I'm disappointed that this has not gotten the attention it needs.. ? I hope that the last episodes will get higher ratings ?. Let's not talk about the male lead. He has mastered his emotions for every scene, I specifically love the emotions he displays when he is with the female lead... his emotions captured my heart, his glance, mood, everything is on point.. he acts like he's been a witness to this event same with the FL. The Kings acting is on point. the entire cast is just amazing.. this is the first time I feel emotionally attached to a KDRAMA. I don't want to see the ending just yet I want this drama to continue.. I wanna see life after this battle is won.. I will break down into tears once this drama ends. ?

It was also realistic, no overdrama or almost fantasy for the main lead casts unlike in other dramas that has too powerful and strong male lead who beats up hundreds of enemies so fast. Also, the ML and FL here were protecting each other in their own different ways making them both loveable and standout in the drama.. I am just so done with knight and shining armor thing who would always protect a weak FL dude. I always waiting up for the scenes of seyoung and junho and fleez gorlll huwag na kasi indenial, You Likeed Him Too! Just get married! Lol.

I just wished one thing, please make the whole drama focus primarly on King Jeongjo and Royal Concubine Seuk Bin love story. Just give us the happy ending they deserved. ( Well, they really got the happy ending but sad they died too early. I got hooked up so yeah I did some research about the real life king and concubine, and guess what, I found out that King Jeongjo did really love only one woman until his death and that was his concubine Sek Bin :)))

Jeonjo's political battle with the Noron is very important due to his willingness to reform the government and the country. Lady Sung's relationship with him is more about her trust and commitment to serving him as a damo(palace lady cop) than just an ordinary daydreaming court lady.

Jeonjo and Lady Sung were already happily together, but the contention between them and the political intrigue in the palace was too great to ignore. That's why this drama is 16 episodes. Giving a different take on their relationship than the Lee Seo Jin/Han Jimin version that is still one of my favorite kdramas of all time. Junho and Lee Seyoung are doing fine, but my only issue is how Yeonjo portrayed here.

If you are fan of regular historicial kdrama where crown prince and other fight for throne watch it . If you are fan of the novel , real love story of king and court lady avoid this drama.its very slow and boring

I just gave this series a try coz' I'm really a fan of Lee Se Young but watching this I fell in love with JunHo. I gave it a try on first episode then I got hooked up now I'm on the latest this is my 6th ongoing drama that I'm currently watching this month.

Female_human Nov 21 2021 2:06 pm Junho's acting got so so so much better than when he was in Wok of Love. Lee Se Young's line when she deliver scenes with some comedy was spot on. I like the comedy scenes here and it's not cringy. The premise of the story is basic but they can deliver it nicely so far (ep.4)

Hyowon Nov 20 2021 1:23 am I really love the lighting and editing this drama uses. It makes everything looks dreamy and has the quality of a movie. Tbh, I'm not a fan for both lead actors, but somehow I find the story quite enjoyable. I love historical dramas that are based on real characters.

I'm quite puzzled with some characters (the King, Head Court Lady Jo) because they seem to be in a gray area and I've yet to figure out their real motives behind their somehow absurd actions. I love the light comedy, I think the amount is just right. Lee Se-young's gestures are so natural as if she was just born funny and clumsy like Deok-Im. Can't imagine someone else playing this character.

Anyway, I look forward to the development of the story. At first I don't really like Lee Se-young's visual, I don't really like her jawline and lower part of face (just my personal preference, please don't attack me) but the more I watch the more I feel her grace and beauty. It's just one of a kind. She looks plain at first sight but the more we see her the more she exudes the aura of grace and elegance. Honestly she fits more with the character of a princess than Hwa-wan who has a face that is too antagonistic and make it too obvious that she's the bad guy here.

P.S. I kinda like Hwawan's foster son. He looks calm and intelligent. I hope there's a development where he switches side and become Crown Prince's ally instead. And I dislike Crown Prince's lecturer (if he's the 2nd male lead, I'm glad I won't develop SLS because I dislike him too much), he's too ambitious for his own good and has developed a very bad mindset, plus he's way too shady for my taste.

Love to see Kang Mal Geum after Missing: The Other Side, and surely the child actors are good, too. Anw I think little Lee San is so similar to Uju from Hospital Playlist ^^. Looking forward to Junho and Seyoung's scenes.
