Set in the 21st century, with South Korea governed by a constitutional monarchy. Seong Hui-Ju (IU) is the second daughter of the top chaebol family in the country. She has almost everything, including a beautiful appearance and intelligence. She is also fiercely competitive. Seong Hui-Ju doesn't care that she is not part of the royal family, but her commoner status starts to become an obstacle in her life. This leads her to get involved with Prince I-An (Byeon Woo-Seok), who is the second son of the King. Prince I-An is destined to have nothing, but his royal status. He always hides him from people, but, after he meets Seong Hui-Ju, he begins to change.

Nurelle Jun 13 2026 6:26 am I was really looking forward to Perfect Crown, but I have to admit that I’m quite disappointed with the storyline. I expected to be much more invested in the drama, especially with such a strong cast.

The performances were great—I can’t deny that. As a fan of IU’s acting and Byeon Woo-seok after Lovely Runner, I had high expectations. However, the story itself has not resonated with me. I’m currently at Episode 10, yet I still find myself feeling lost and disconnected from the plot.

The drama seems to be missing a certain element that keeps viewers emotionally engaged. For me, the biggest issue is the storytelling. Despite the talented cast and beautiful production, the narrative has not left much of an impact, which is a shame because the potential was definitely there.

And surely I think all the gaps that we noticed, actually portrayed well in the web novel which is why it is soooo frustrating to see how big of a potential the script is but due to the production house busy cutting the production cost, they have to scram everything into 12 episode

Warlen May 23 2026 11:24 pm Gong Seung-yeon : The epitome of Royalty. She looked stunning and gorgeous, as the Dowager Queen. Her eyes were intriguing and could've made empires rise and fall. I would be too happy to see a parallel storyline, where she and Ian are the King and the Queen. Very suitable couple, I would say. Gong Seung-yeon is one of those few actresses that has wider face, that often makes one look chubby. She used to look chubby in her earlier debut days, but after losing too much weight (maybe to make her face appear smaller), her entire body looks weak and soft. I want Korean entertainment industry to normalise chubby faces. For heaven's sake, I don't want to see my favourite actors losing weight, just to please an industry.

Byeon Woo-seok: Handsome, beautiful, radiance. Definitely, from all the layers of make-up on his face, and the beautiful royal robes and suits complimented him pretty well. What I did not like is the director and writer's too much reliance on his good looks. They were literally serving his good looks, and had built a hasty storyline around it. It felt like some sort of fan service. The Korean industry needs to come together to ban such overly female fantasy serving storyline and scenes, as it might ruin reality for the society.

Noh Sang-hyun : What is wrong with this psychopath. He goes on a one sided love story on the girl and destroys everyone and everything around just to satisfy his empty ego. He's such a loser.

IU : Started very well, but deep into the drama I was not very convinced. A typical drama world CEO. Petite looking person, not the right choice for a male actor with broad shoulders and wide face. Why was she even chosen.

Even critics who disliked the narrative acknowledged that the visuals and scale were impressive. The soundtrack deserves praise too. Instead of overpowering scenes emotionally, the music often stayed elegant and restrained, allowing silence and tension to breathe. That gave many emotional scenes a cinematic feeling rather than a melodramatic television tone. Most importantly, the drama attempted something creatively risky. Modern monarchy dramas are difficult because they can easily become shallow fantasy.

Perfect Crown at least tried to explore: the burden of public identity, inherited power, loneliness within privilege, media manipulation, and the emotional cost of constantly performing perfection. That ambition is why the drama became so heavily discussed. Safe dramas rarely create this level of conversation.

That’s why so many viewers connected to it despite the controversy surrounding it. In the end, Perfect Crown will probably be remembered as a flawed but significant drama rather than a “bad” one. It aimed higher than many safe, formulaic romance dramas do. Ambitious dramas almost always create stronger reactions, both positive and negative.

That’s why it remains worth watching: not because it is perfect, But because it tried to tell something emotionally sincere, visually rich, and culturally ambitious, and succeeded in many of those areas even while stumbling in others. After all Perfect Crown became meaningful because it created emotional attachment, visual identity, cultural discussion, and performances that many viewers will still remember long after the controversy fades.

Instead of current issue related miss leading culture, honestly without knowing this, I am falling in love with this scenes. I didn't found something bad during airing this kdrama.

1st came from wedding scenes, as long as I watch wedding kdrama, this scene wedding was so beautiful and make I am wonder how beautiful korean wedding one. 2nd come from celebration IAN from daegun become king, this scene shown beautiful how Korean monarchy itself.

I really enjoyed a lot the kdrama as person outside of South Korea. From Byeon wooseok, IU, all cast and Perfect crown that I can realize how beautiful South Korea culture inside and make me would like visit Korea someday.

Dale May 19 2026 1:48 am It's not the best drama but it's enough to be entertaining. I don't know why people are complaining the inaccuracies- it's fiction, have you not watched a lot of dramas in the past? Within the fictional world, things might be different. I feel bad for the main leads apologising because they were the main lead, why not blame the writers, the director, the costume designers? People definitely had a lot of time in their hands.

But kudos to Gong SeungYeon and Noh SangHyun

I'd love to see a painting of the two of them made from this drama (remember they were both in Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo as well!). I also loved the historical settings in real royal palaces and other royal buildings from centuries past. I think IU really stole the show here. She has become an exceptional actress. How anyone could quit after the first episode is beyond me. lol You missed an enjoyable romantic journey.

The shower scene, the tousled strands falling over the face of BWS, the flashy sports car, cheesy posing for the paparazzi, the unnecessarily long slow strides down the corridor zooming in on BWS face and to top it off, the ridiculous scene where putting out a fire at a palace with buckets of water in the 21st Century was just too much. It was like the director copied and pasted scenes from other dramas to captivate the audience and instead ended up with a patchwork of clichés. IU is one of my favourite FL and BWS as ML is usually captivating but even with great actors I could not finish episode one because it seemed like the director did not care about the story line, they just wanted to sell a commercial product and I did not push play for that. I still love you IU and BWS but I pass on this one.

SJ May 18 2026 4:02 pm The show started off strong but had a weak ending. It had so much potential and yet fell flat. No issues with the cast as they did pretty much what was told. My qualms mostly with writers and how it was executed. In between episodes were lagging and boring and serves more like a filler rather than good storytelling. I would have preferred to see more scenes on how their romance was developed. More scenes of the fierceness FL had in Ep 1 which i felt toned down so much over the next episodes. Overall a very average drama that probably won't have your full attention.

I think all of the cast members in this drama deserve recognition. because they are perfect, main cast and supporting cast, and the storyline is great. except for the missing detail about joseon dynasty, you can't turn a blind eye to the storyline and character development from ep. 1 - ep. 12. I love the chemistry between IU and Byeon Woo Seok. I can't imagine anyone other than them to playing the role of Seong Huiju and Lee Wan. I know the drama is a little bit rush, but it's healing for me. especially the love-line. Perfect Crown is perfect cast and perfect story. I hope to see IU and Byeon Woo Seok together in another drama. "The highest-rated K-drama of 2026" is actually worth the hype, because this drama really deserves the highest rating for now because it's well worth the watch but.. for you who are really hardcore of the previous couple from their last drama, just enjoy the drama and please don't say bad things about their chemistry just because you hate IU or Byeon Woo Seok. respect their hard work *peace love*

In fact, I wasn't a fan of the male lead initially; I only tuned in because IU's track record is incredible. But let’s be real: what they delivered goes way beyond standard acting. To anyone criticizing the male lead: look past the appearance and actually try to understand his character. His performance is brilliant, and the show’s massive hype isn't about good looks, it’s about masterclass acting. He embodied the role so flawlessly that it’s impossible to imagine anyone else playing it.

The entire cast exceeded expectations and carried the story beautifully. If people could just drop the cynicism, jealousy, and unrealistic expectations, they’d see the true artistry of this show. It’s a masterpiece if you actually give it a fair chance.

But that aside, it looks like they took the way historical Joseon dramas are depicted and added the way the current royal freeloaders in England live, and made this one.

I just don't know why people feel there was chemistry between them. I even believe there was more chemistry between Byeon woo suk and the great queen to IU but people won't believe. Byeonwon seok wasn't free with IU. He was very stiff throughout. I will give it 6/10

ThinkingSpinach May 17 2026 6:14 am honestly… what a mess. episode 1-2 were great like enough to make me interested and excited to watch the other episodes. but contrary to my expectations, the episodes after that were just lacking. there are lot of details left unexplained or not showed like how and who messed with huiju’s car?, who burned the previous king alive?, what happened to jeongwoo after revealing he attempted to murder lee wan?, what happened to the palace staff after the monarchy was abolished?, what’s keeping or kept the royal family financially stable after abolishing the monarchy like do they have jobs?, etc. there’s a lot of plot holes in this drama that were tried to be covered up by its visuals. thank god the actors were superb at acting and the visuals were topnotch because otherwise, this would not have any saving grace.

comparing it to the main leads’ previous work like when life gives you tangerines or lovely runner, this was such a let down. even if it was just 12 episodes, it could’ve been executed better. i also get why the chemistry of the main actors was criticized and questioned. it’s because they were not given a solid scene that could really touch the audience’s heart into feeling how and why these two people love each other. like it shows you romantic scenes, but it fails to deliver any heartfelt emotional attack which i think could’ve been done if the directing was better.

I can accept weird storylines but just cannot accept silly things like high end cars with no airbags? Palace halls with no sprinkler system? Palace staff trying to put out fires using pails? Why is His Majesty in the palace hall all by himself that his InPyeong uncle can simply barge in and harass the poor kid? Hate it that it seems like scriptwriters and producers just simply said 'we got bws and iu. Dress them up like gorgeous dolls and put in a lame ass storyline, make sure to insert the obligatory male lead topless scene and the netizen will think it's a masterpiece'... Bleurgh.

Jillibean May 17 2026 2:47 am Classics Princess Hours and King 2 Hearts were two Korean dramas that also started with a premise that a monarchy was still in existence in modern day Korea. I think both of those dramas were far better written than this one, though I still did enjoy Perfect Crown too. It just was simply not on the same profound level as those two classics. If you haven't seen them watch them and you'll see what masterpieces really look like -- especially King 2 Hearts!

I did think IU looked gorgeous and had fun with her role, so I am happy for her success. She sure has come a long way since the days of Dream High! LOL

- HEAVY SPOILERS** I normally don't leave comments, but I feel the need to say something about this drama. This drama was unfortunately too overhyped. It started out strong but too many incidents kept happening that it would be obvious to the public that there's a conspiracy going on. The couple couldn't even fully enjoy their marriage because one thing keeps happening after another. I don't think it had been a full week from the day of their marriage to the day I-An became king and decided to abolish the monarchy. Maybe that was his goal the entire time, but the main conflict was between the main four casts and the Regent Queen's dad. Just seems like I-An's decision didn't have any forethought because there is no way you would decide to abolish the monarchy unless you've planned it for years and garnered enough support from the court. You also have to think of the livelihood of the people who worked for you. Also, it's the 21st century, doesn't make sense that they still let a child to be king. Are there no child labour laws in their world?? Great cast but poor plot and storyline. Just very disappointed. I'm enjoying My Royal Nemesis more than this.

Waiting for the last two episodes to come out and I am going to be sad to finish this one. I love the chemistry between IU and Byeon Woo-Seok and the pacing is good. I generally don't watch rom coms because the stories are so similar and can be boring, and while this story isn't that original, I am finding it a lot of fun. I haven't been this obsessed with a K drama in a very long time. I highly recommend to anyone looking for a little escape from their life.

The female lead should represent women kicking ass as the head of a company, yet her character is reduced to the superficiality of a contract marriage plot—a concept that could have worked with some modern, creative twists, but as presented, it just doesn’t land. The attempted murder subplot and the outdated power struggle for the crown don’t help either. The visuals are stunning—the palace backdrops are breathtaking—but the storyline is shallow. Both main leads are beautiful (I loved IU in When Life Gives You Tangerines and Byeon in Lovely Runner), yet unlike their previous dramas, their chemistry falls flat, and some romance scenes are cringe. Overall, the show is built around its face cards and visuals more than on meaningful storytelling or character development.

The blend of modern and historical concept in this drama also didn't lived up to its intended goal. The first few episodes were ok but it became boring along the way. I waited and expected a lot from this drama but idk. At this point, i'm just gonna finish it just for the sake of finishing it.

In order to avoid the pitfalls of many excellent dramas, I hope the writer or writers break out of cliche mindset as soon as possible after this episode. that didn't work. This episode was predictable to all of us. Additionally, it is purportedly a contemporary monarchy, but with all the Joseon Dynasty clichés?In any case, I appreciate the opportunity to watched it so far.

Philo May 05 2026 3:05 am The drama needs 20 episodes for proper story telling. It at least needs 16 episodes. Trying to complete the story haphazardly within the 12 episode duration feels incomplete and rushed. Most of the scenes where the male lead comes, feels like some sort of fan service to people who got stuck by Sunjae fever and not able to get a cure. Heavy reliance on good looks and charms. This is not the right portrayal of a drama. It would have been nice if the drama has more episodes and relies on normal storytelling.

The scenes where the Queen Dowager and her brother meet and talk. They are super intense and give the Saguek drama feel. At the rate by which this drama is going, if feels as if the villains are giving a cameo appearance in the drama. The Dowager Queen's eyes are too irresistible. I'm unable to concentrate on anything else. She definitely has the look of Royalty. The female has the look of commoner despite dressing in luxury outfits. This was very intentionally done by director and costume designer. The prime minister is a loser. Why haven't he expressed his love to female lead until now and why is he suddenly getting too close to her making personal phone calls. Very unpolite of him.

The drama seems to be banging on eye candy with a sporadic garnishing of the aides' romance. I thought the poisoning was planned to allow a deeper investigation of the evil within the palace walls.

The no-nonsense fake marriage couple who are more mature in handling their “relationship” than “real” couples who keep the misunderstanding cleared up until the last episode. Acting? Great. Cringey clout chaser heiress, stoic grand prince… and both of them are changing the more time they spend with each other. This series can make you laugh, cry, and root for the protagonists.

Agree Apr 26 2026 8:26 am Understand that this drama is not everyone's cup of tea. Especially for BWS's fans. This is nothing like Lovely Runner, which had many twists and turns. And if you were a hardcore Byron Woo-seok and Kim Hye-yoon couple fan, then you're going to not like this drama.

Flush your thoughts about other K-Dramas and look at this through a pair of fresh eyes. The script and storyline are plain, yes. You know why? Because this is a blend of Sageuk & Modern day drama. It doesn't have the deep political genre that traditional Sagueks have, and neither does it have the light hearted modern day vibe. So it is going to be a little so so. And we have 2 strong leads. Seong Heiju who is a CEO of a conglomerate and Yi-An, the Grand Prince. This drama is struggling to balance between the two leads. The script is struggling to give the same spotlight to both the characters, without losing the essence of the storyline.

That's why many of the fans are not and to get on board and enjoy this one. The drama took too much time in getting a go ahead from the actors, because I think neither of them wanted a lower charcter than the other. Result, we are sitting and watching a patchy drama, where the story is neither here nor there and it's hard to keep up the pace between the leads. I wish someone else had taken the female role instead of a star like IU. In that way, the character would've complimented the storyline. IU had played too tough roles before and even in this one, she gives an uninterested acting in scenes where she is not the main character.

I am really, really happy watching this drama.

Honestly, IU and Byeon Woo Seok are Perfect together. Seeing them on screen makes me laugh, smile, and even fall in love with their chemistry.

Their interactions feel so natural and sweet. Sometimes it makes me shy while watching, but at the same time, it makes me so happy.

This drama is truly a stress reliever. After watching it, my mood becomes so much better.

Please… I really hope this drama goes until 16 episodes !

I also want to highlight Lee Si Hun. He is so funny in this drama!

His scenes always make me laugh especially when he helps IU with styling and rides his motorbike to inform Byeon Woo Seok when something happens. That part is really hilarious !

Overall, this drama is light, fun, and very enjoyable. Perfect for anyone who wants to relax and feel happy.

It’s so ridiculously bad you have to keep watching it to see if it improves but every episode I want to poke my eye with a fork. The storyline borders on the absurdity of the rich. The script is nonsense at least the actors are trying but not overly convincing. I am actually flabbergasted this was even produced especially on why ridiculously wealthy people spend all their time plotting to get married and going shopping, having servants wait on them. The typical “feel sorry” for the wealthy / royal characters is lazy & lame writing. With an over used storytelling of a love triangle and evil in laws on both sides is just boring. Clearly no twists coming unless they throw in a car accident or murder. Unless that’s what will come out about the dead king. Even that’s predictable! Capitalism and classism is clearly on display in this soon to be forgotten KD the very boring Perfect Crown. ?

That kid is super cute and a good actor too, that scene where he was slapped was so touching... he brought tears to my eyes when he cried. I just watched him in Phantom Lawyer episode 12, he was the kidnapped kid.

Been watching her since Dream high. Bel Ami. Producers. Moon lovers. Hotel Del Luna. Tangerines and this one. She eats and chews her characters so effortlessly, but something is going wrong here. I won't say all scenes, but few scenes. And it leaves an indent. Which one can't ignore. I hope it becomes better as the drama goes. Maybe she's still feeling the character or still experimenting with it.

Byeon Woo-seok. Oh my goodness! I paused at so many scenes, especially the closeup ones, where he looks just like a painting. Sitting there and staring through his beautiful brown eyes which are shining like marbles. His face will heal you through a rough day, I tell you. And his outfits. Whoever designed them needs a hike and a bonus. A hanbok-styled silk shirt and a beautiful coat covering his broad shoulders. Oh my dear! I wish I had two more pairs of eyes to take in the scenes where he appears. The color choices of his outfits were top notch. It definitely makes him look like a Royal. To be honest, He's more Royal than any Royals that I had ever seen.

I loved the outfit of his private residence ladies. That pastel orange apron kind of uniform. It looks so cute.

I love IU's secretary. The tomboyish character who is witty and speaks without a filter. She's a perfect fit for IU and her fiery ways.

I couldn't get enough of the leads scenes together. I wish there were more. Couldn't wait for next week's episodes.

Byeon Wooseok as Prince Ian is living with his cold, emotionless (forced), weighing the regency of nation. The total opposite of his previous role. He's doing a great job for his character. Loved it Apr 13 2026 7:12 am The first two episodes were amazing. IU as usual nailed it with her brilliant portrayal of a character which only she can nail. She is cute, sweet and evil all at the same time.

As soon as they changed the title to 21st Century Prince's Queen, I knew that this drama will have a Female lead heavy role and as I guessed, that is how it has been so far. Male lead seem to be having a slightly lower role or maybe it might be equal to the female lead's as the drama moves on.

Gong Seung-yeon, I have never seen her play an antagonist, so I'm going to love watching her play it here. But I'm too used to her good girl characters, so let me see how she kills that image.

Male lead is so far flat on his emotions and expressions. Couldn't wait to see the character arc.

The little King is such a sweetie pie.

So, am all set to travel along with this cast throughout the next few months.

Of course, I'm already anticipating some major character development as their marital relations begin. So I am excited for the next episodes. It's always fun to watch when there is growth in the characters, and well, that's definitely gonna happen in this drama. It is not boring at all.

They are building the setting and the character and I feel like they successfully did just that at ep 1. They are establishing Hui-Ju's quirks and I-An's dilemma already in that beautiful visuals and set. I cannot wait for the next ep because from the trailer--it looks like its going to have the right kind of mix of everything--drama, romance, politics, and internal turmoil.
