Yi In (Cho Jung-Seok) is a prince. His older brother is King Yi Sun, who cares about him a lot. Vowing loyalty to his older brother, Yi In is taken hostage by the Qing Dynasty. King Yi Sun soon views his younger brother's loyalty as betrayal and begins to hate him. Yi In endures deep emotional pain because of this. Yi In then meets an unknown baduk player who wagers on her games. He is completely fascinated by the baduk player. Through circumstances, Yi In becomes the king. He holds the highest position and is a strong person, but he is sad and weak internally. When Kang Hee-Soo (Shin Se-Kyung) was gaining fame as an unknown baduk player, she met Prince Yi In and fell in love with him. Through a vortex of fate, she becomes a spy. She approaches King Yi In to get her revenge.

Suzanne Jul 20 2025 5:17 am Fantastic drama. I have watched this series several times and I always find something new. Cho Jung-Seok is superb. This series makes it all believable! I truly love the acting, the story, the music and vocal song and background music plus the scenery... It is all just wonderful. He is truly a king! And Shin Se Kyreng is wonderful in her part. Actually each and every actor is perfect. I could go down the list of every one saying excellent. What a cast! And, as a side note I am learning Baduk! GO in English.

I dont understand the wiki summaries characterizing him as “weak” in any way. Maybe the word means something different in korean. That they came together with their baduk skills was wonderful …then the whole film was like a well played-out baduk or chess game. Surprising turns - unpredictable. So great

One thing that seemed a bit off, was the fact that she looked way too pretty and feminine at all times to pass for a young man. All men had facial hair, he/she didn’t. Other than this , it’s one of the most beautiful romantic, action series I’ve seen from this era. ??????

The chemistry between King Yin In and Kang Hee Soo characters is enthralling, he's a brilliant actor and so handsome, so is Shin Se Kyumg, (Kang He Soo), she is also a great actress and very beautiful. Young Prince Munseomg is such an good and adorable actor. I throughly enjoyed this drama, the storyline, all the actors and actresses. In fact i'am hooked, as keep on rewatching especially all the scenes with the King and Hee-Soo. Hoping for a Season 2

I began to enjoy it more once I realized the character of the King was played by the same actor who played the detective in 'Two Cops' along with Kim Seon-Ho. I was able to compare his acting in two completely different roles. I really began to enjoy the drama when I realized the scropt was baduk played in the lives of the characters with the King sitting on one side of the table. The script was very well done as was the acting.

I am watching it for the third time and expect to keep enjoying it for a long time. The casting, acting, script, cinematography, and production values are all extremely high quality and very appealing. I am now keenly interested in learning about Korean contemporary culture as well. Netflix, thank you for bringing this into my life.

Wow one has to be an amazing actor. That he was ( Jo Jung -sak) . I hope to see these two actors more in the near future. Hoping their ratings will be strong so we can be able to Part two of Captivating the King. Always hoping that it will continue to translate in Spanish or in English. There so many wonderful stories in Netflix from Korean that I would love to see and enjoy but they are transited in English now Spanish. That makes me sad. Again I was so impressed with this “ Captivating the King” I applaud you all.

Would have liked to have seen a better ending where Shin Se-Kyung become Queen. Who knows perhaps they will do a sequel to it. Have watched several episodes over again. 10 out of 10.

Anne Mar 15 2024 12:36 am I kept thinking I am glad I didn’t live during that time period either as part of the court or a regular person. It was dangerous maybe especially so for the king. He couldn’t trust anyone. But that aside, wow what a sageuk! Some SPOILERS ahead! Indeed Jo Jung Suk carried this series. He was awesome good, just riveting. His facial and body expressions showed sorrow, anger, fear, passion, and at times you can see the wheels spinning in his brain as he strategized on a plan to beat the bad guys. The first kiss scene in Ep.8 was so believable and hot, not cringe. JoJung Suk’s expression, how he, well both, were able to look directly into each other’s eyes, no cutaways for them to giggle and get their act together. It was a long scene and challenging to do. That's right after he realized she’s a girl. (Agree with smarty-pants’ comment below.). Sadly, the other kiss scenes were blah, not sure why the director did that, especially the ending which was disappointing. Overall this is an above average historic drama, lots of Palace intrigue. Very entertaining.

smarty-pants Mar 10 2024 9:18 am ...and in this drama there are numerous scenes where the two leads facing each others. I agree with the comments below that the last scene of ep 8 was touching. We, at least I, could follow their train of thoughts, the process, the dynamics that culminate at ep 8 last scene. But we need to pay attention from ep 1 till ep 8 in order to understand why they act like that in the last scene of ep 8. Otherwise we might think that FL acted and moved rather awkwardly. But for me FL nailed the last scene of ep 8 thoroughly. I mean that is how a sincere, hopelessly falling in love, no future, joseon era plebeian woman would act. She is ready to die. Her acting in that particular scene was so deep, i was saddened and i could feel her. and feel sorry for her. lol. ..omg.. i love them both now. i am a big sucker for this. lol.

smarty-pants Mar 10 2024 8:46 am ...imo, one of the most difficult filming scene to produce is the scene in which two actors facing each other engaging in a conversation and the camera stand still. No camera tricks, the camera could be set on a tripod. So the burden is solely on the two actors to make it a succesful scene shot or not. the result could ok, so-so, quite alright, a dud, yawning, or captivating. from 1 to 10 scale, whatever it is, it is a relative matter, not an absolute one since every viewers has his/her own previous exposures to tvdrama from which they would draw their conclusions. That is why drama genre is, imo, the most difficult to perform, from the actors' point of view, pov. I truly apreciate all the efforts the actors and actresses casted in this tvdrama. They must have put their best efforts for this drama series.

Lorena Mar 09 2024 10:20 am I have watched a lot of dramas, and this is one of my top favorites. I have rewatched episodes and scenes within episodes over and over. The actors and actresses did such an amazing job. Kang Hong-Suk, Han Dong-Hee, Song Sang-Eun, Ha Seo-Yoon, Choi Ye-Chan, Kim Seo-Ha and Lee Sin-Young gave us such endearing characters! Shin Se-Kyung and Cho Jung-Seok were amazing in this. I thought their chemistry was great. I wish they had tied up some things such as why Mong Woo was a favorite nickname of the King and maybe let us see the reunion of Kang Hee-Soo with her father. The end of episode 8 was so enthralling with them both in tears because of what might happen with the King having threatened death if she deceived him, and then the two surrendering to their feelings for one another. What a great scene that was! I was a little disappointed in their later kiss scenes. They were sweet, but I think could have been more passionate given the situations, the first being their last night together before she was leaving (I would think they would be just not wanting to ever let go), and then the second upon her return, where I would think their overwhelming joy of seeing each other again would have them first in a wonderful powerful embrace, and then in a beautiful emotional kiss. Still, I am grateful that the writers gave us a happy ending!

Suz Mar 05 2024 8:42 pm As usual, all the actors did a superb job, as well as the director. The writing/story was also interesting. As I’ve said since I started to watch this, I have more respect for Cho Jung-seok as an actor than even before. I never realized the depth of his acting. I look forward to seeing him in more performances. And I love his singing in Hospital Playlist. The ending…was lovely, however, I would have liked a clearer understanding as to whether the king actually was proposing to Kang Hee-soo & she would become the queen or he just wasn’t ever letting her leave his side so they were going to play Baduk until death do us part. I think queen, although she didn’t seem the type who would be comfortable in that role. I can see that some might not care for this, but I think it was refreshing, different & as I said, all of the actors were superb, especially Cho. I could really do without the torture scenes, but I guess that must have been commonplace in those days?

Title will be "Captivating The Queen" and the lead actor will be Ma Dong-Seok. His character wants to get revenge on the Queen for what she did to destroy his family. To get his revenge, he decides to enter the royal palace as a court lady. He wears a wig and a dress, so no one will know he is a man. He then captivates the queen with his unique charm and deep knowledge about applying makeup. Towards the end of the sequel, Ma Dong-Suk will reveal that he really is a man and everyone will say "My eyes so easily deceive me! I had no idea she was a man! He had long hair and wore a dress!" ... The End.

Gagetti Dario Mar 04 2024 7:46 am This was one of the best TV-series this year. Kudos to director Jo Nam Kook and the actors. This is the second time we have seen Cho Jung Seok who was very good. Incredible his ability to convey thousands messages just with his gaze. Excellent !! We enjoyed a lot the surprise made by Kim Hyo Jin in episode 8. Grande !!

The only doubt left is; will Kang Hee Soo spend the rest of her life with the King finally as a Woman or disguised again and again dressed as a Man?

Renwa Mar 03 2024 11:54 pm CTK is a well written nuanced story. The game of Baduk was the cornerstone of the story, the metaphor for the character development and character interaction…so clever. It exceeded expectations and was a lovely engrossing captivating drama…seemed grossly underrated and not fully understood in my humble opinion. The acting was a step above. Cho Jung Seok hit it out of the park! Award worthy again. Shin Se Khung developed an authentic character in light of the Baduk metaphor. Perhaps superimposing routine romantic tropes didn’t permit some viewers the full appreciation of her work…it was noteworthy. Vey enjoyable watch.

Babs Mar 03 2024 11:01 pm The last episode was so sublime in the romance between the ML and FL. Though the ML carried the entire series with superb acting, the FL taking a few steps behind in her acting was a perfect, just a perfect combination IMO. Her submissiveness was noted to the point that some think she was too stiff and yet The King knew how her eyes are set ablaze when she is emotionally provoked and warned her about her dealings with the Qing Emperor. So her acting was a perfect match for the ML. She was stoic, no extra movement, no extra facial expression. I think that she portrayed her role exquisitely. What a great story. Thank you to the writer, director, cast and crew! A job well done indeed!

I was disappointed in the romance and felt like FL shrunk on screen when she was with such a great ML. Her expression never changed and at the end after this great love story she exhibited no passion. She has been better. She was better rookie historian, maybe direction or writing for her but I kept thinking it would have been perfect with different actress. Cho Jung-Seok Carried the series. Overall I looked forward every week to see the show

Co Feb 29 2024 8:49 am The female lead (Shin Se Kyung) her acting is very poor. Especially when she's acting like a man. It looks like a woman wearing a man's clothes. Her voice sounds feminine, while she was acting a man's role, her movement looks feminine even while wearing a man's clothes. Everything about her screams feminine whereas she's acting a man's role. Her eyes, facial expressions are all womanly Honestly as I was watching her act a man's role I always thought the men will just grab her & kiss her lolz. Cos she looks so feminine. I must say that she didn't act it well. She should be given only feminine roles please. She shouldn't act like a man, her acting is not good. But thanks to Cho Jung Seok, his wonderful action helps to cover up most of her shortcomings.. I still couldn't finish the series... Sorry but I have to be honest.

Bell Feb 29 2024 1:25 am I think this is the breakthrough of all Kdrama ever. To me this is by far the best kdrama in the history. Everything was so perfect for Captivating The King. From the main cast to the soundtrack to the acting and location set up. Everything was so perfect. I have never seem a better kdrama love story than this. The storyline is too perfect that it gives me chill.. The King attitude and his ruling is too perfect. His voice is what a king should sound like. His one step ahead thinking and intelligence is what a true king should act, think and react when ruling. his passionate love, kiss, the way king look at Mong Woo, the way he kiss, the chemistry between both of them is what captivating me to continue watching this kdrama. I never watch any kdrama 2x. but this one causing me trouble to sleep every night. i continuous re watch like a hundreds time now. Pls don't stop at 16 episode, pls quickly produce the 2nd season please..cheball...pls dont stop here.. i cant move on ..

Babs Feb 26 2024 10:02 pm I watched episode 14 for a second time. I‘ve been watching each episode twice because I sometimes miss the sub-titled conversations (non-Korean fan here). I am so glad this is on Netflix. I think it is a perfect venue for these types of dramas! Wish I can watch the last 2 episodes tonight! Sigh! And yes, the king hardly smiles! Enigmatic! The Crown Prince is the only one who really smiles and it is a ray of sunshine when he does.

Suzanne Feb 26 2024 12:13 am Choi Ye-Chan is doing a very fine job playing the Grand Prince. Unfortunately, the fact that he seems so competent to be the king, I’m afraid that’s how it’ll end. Because I can’t imagine that Ye-in is going to give up the crown & he & Hee-soo are going to run off & live happily ever after, I can imagine that there’s going to be a very sad ending with sacrifices & heartbreak. I hope I’m wrong! Cho Jung seok has really shown what an impressive actor he is in this series. Credit must also go to the writing & certainly directing. The entire cast is impressive. Jang Young Nam always manages to be so wicked (based on the parts I’ve seen her play). Now Court Lady Dong is getting evil & conniving, I figured it was coming, but I still hate that story line. On the other hand, I always love the loyal & skillful personal guard & Joo Sang Hwa is very likable played by Kang Hong-suk. I try not to watch these things until nearly all the episodes are out. Ugh! How do people wait a whole week for 2 new episodes are released? Not being Korean, keeping these names straight is a challenge. I need Asian wiki sheet sheet to help. Thank you! I’m definitely going to be searching for new productions with Cho Jung-seok, a 3rd season of Hospital Playlist & rewatch Oh My Ghost.

The way he portrayed the emotions is awesome. ? It’s not easy to play this role(being witty, resolute and commanding). Every cast member did well.

Love the series, can’t believe this is coming to end soon. I have seen dramas where atleast one episode is boring and you can easily imagine what will happen next. But this drama’s script consisted enough twists to keep us holding to wait.

Oh the plots and twists to this story is so tight and complicated… other shows that I had to wait for episodes to show up sometimes became a bit confusing. But this one packs a wallop each episode! Cant wait to see how this story unfolds in the last 4 episodes! Great writing, great directing! Superb acting where all the cast lean into their characters so well. Even the bad Yoo Hyun-Bo… hard to root for someone as baddie as him but that is why I think his acting is superb as well!

Watched for Shin Se Kyung's Sageuk (I am all in with most of her Sageuk dramas) but stay because of the twists and turns, Cho Jun Suk exceptional acting as The King, great actors, director, and writer, fabulous wardrobes and make ups that suit their skin color and enhanced their beauty, the sceneries in long shoot was so great. I hope the team gets recognize for their efforts in making this drama.

Anyway, another pov from me:

Go/baduk is famous in East Asia and they played it to enhanced their brain to read situations and making decisions and creating strategy (some say baduk is harder to learn than chess). That's why they never thought Monwoo is a woman since maybe women had less access to learn at that time (Hee Soo's father is baduk master and well respected teacher and maybe her mother was passed away, so she learned many things from her father).

There are still 4 episodes left while every episodes have so many plot twists that I still have no idea about Yi In, Is he good or bad or good boy gone bad (?). Hopefully they will get best endings for whatever they deserve. I don't really mind if they are not end up together (I prepare my heart because after watching six flying dragons, I learned it's hard for the king to be with smart and independent woman because though their hearts are mutual their brain have their own believes). But still, deep down I hope they will end up together maybe in secret like now or as Hee Soo and Yi In.

Feb 18 2024 8:34 pm @confused: because Queen's father is one of the Hwan trio who supported Yi In getting the throne along with his Uncle and min ji Hwan (soon to be Father in law of the grand prince Munseong). Maybe because of her father loyalty and royalty to the Queen Dowager, she was chosen to be the Queen. But the king was so cold to the late queen while the queen Dowager kept on pushing her to have children so she got really sick day by day (she wasn't really healthy to begin with).

smarty-pants Feb 18 2024 5:35 am this baduk game, i dunno anything about it but i think is similar to post grad studies about strategies, planning plotting,scheming and the following execution stages. So it is not just a game. it is the joseon version of an advanced cases study course taught at war college. Is it? I mean the fl character gave so many advises even planning the plot like she is the de facto national security adviser of the king. So they spent lots of working hours in front of baduk board not for amusement but to hone their governance related skill, and she excel it. And while in the game they start talking about plotting and scheming. Anyway, Choi Dae Hoon, King Yi Sun, came in very strong. He scares me good. Awesome actor. Then ML surprised me. Coz last time i saw him was in hospital play list. No fearsome gaze before, unlike here. I mean look at his eye pupil, His Majesty dead serious meant it when he said all the scary threats. While FL, i admit, again due to her previous works before, i just saw one or two dramas of her in it, i thought she was in for her face,(she is very attractive ), being a typical ignorant pig, i underestimated her. I was wrong. Big time wrong. IMO she solidly hold her ground in this drama. She could be overwhelmed by ML performance, but no....She could balance ML' s performance. Her character, IMO, is in a stockholm syndrome situation. Torn between. i handed over a lot of my sympathy for their predicament, thanks to the accumulated backround filling in, i sincerely hope, please no greek tragedy in the end. A highly recommended drama.

Rest of the day he is attending the meetings with court officials, hunting.. etc. Since there are many scenes with the game that doesn’t imply that the king is not attending his duties.

Vee Feb 15 2024 2:48 am The drama is well made and the plot unfolds well in portraying the turmoil of the times and the manipulations of the nobilities. The story caught my attention because it shows how a woman is trying to work through a corrupt system while being good at a male dominated game.

I particularly liked how the main actress (she was superb in “Run on” as well) has maintained the feminine aspect of her character as much as possible because to portray a woman in the medieval era playing a man as she navigates the vipers den of politics, while also keeping a masked feminity, is not easy and she has done it very well… excellent ??.

The male lead is exceptional in his acting and his face transforms the emotions into subtle expressions fabulously! He has a presence on screen that can’t be ignored and draws the viewer’s attention to the strength and weaknesses of the character.

All of the actors do a great job in essaying their characters. Well done drama!! Looking forward to the next few episodes.

This could hv been a daesang winning type of drama for the ML (he should remain a grey character and realistic to kings at that time than a love struck ML!) and the drama itself but they HV started falling short ever since episode 5

I felt like this drama could hv been so much more than the FL seeking revenge?! She is not compelling enough in her convictions and too emotional and obviously in love for her to b seen as an actual threat to the king by the viewers !They should hv made her cold and cunning plus ruthless after coming back to be an equal opponent to the king! The king is also becoming a whomp character bcoz of lov! Like seriously u are not going to find her real name and motives after what u did to her ?! It feels reckless and out of character for him....there would hv been so much tension if they were both highly alert , plotting and actually motivated by power / revenge than love!! It would hv made this drama thrilling and one of the kind. I noticed how a lot of her scenes so far are focused tightly on her eyes. This is why I think she is a good match to Cho Jung Seok. A 10 for me so far! Contrary to what some here have suggested, I believe the actress’s rather ‘wooden’ poise is on point by providing the right balance to the perfect enigma that the king is. As Norik noted, what a cliffhanger it would have been without two episodes coming tomorrow.

The make a 180 turn as to why in heck that female was put against him is beyond my comprehensions, just robotic acting while with the king one is amazed . the ending of episode 8 is beyond amazing, it’s overwhelming , no one could do this scene any better, please just ignore the boring lead actress , as some of you commented about her, just watch the king doing the real art of acting ,oh my Goodness ,I just can’t say enough . I’m an experienced stage actress , and director and I know a bit about acting , lol.

Now the only think I will do , is , to wait for tomorrow, Sunday feb.11th til 9 am , for airing of the 9th episode .

Thank you Netflex , thank you for this gift of two additional episodes on Sunday , because of the Korean new year, if not , I think I would have gone crazy with a cliff hanger like that , happy new year to you all.

What? Make it believable, writer-nim. She should come back as herself and capturing the King's heart. I think it will become more interesting. At this point, we just have the same enemies all over again.

And I think Yi In just take the throne to protect his brother's heir which is Grand Prince Munseong from his mother and his uncle. He knew that if the poor kid took the throne as the late king wants, he will be dead too. Seeing that he's attentive towards Grand Prince Munseong and not having any heir himself, it might be true though it's funny that this drama had so many potential in the beginning but now it will become just any other drama that will not be remembered after finish. I'll comeback to watch the last episode to know if it is really worth watching back all episodes. I cannot stand the repetitive plot all over again. So boring.

I liked how in night flower the FL dresses like a ninja .... all covered, face and all but the as soon as ML gets close enough to her, he quickly identifies that its woman. Its annoying. I know its fiction but they really could have made it more believable

But honestly, if you're going to have any drama or another drama when the female lead pretends to be a man, don't get a tiny petite women to play that part. None of the other men are like her. Okay so it was frustrating to me. The second frustrating thing is that I cannot understand the personality change between the prince and the king when he became king. Maybe I missed something somewhere, but the first time he spoke coldly to this person that he was so close and did not care if she lived or died. It did not make sense.

Just finished episode 4 ….but can someone please shed some light for this viewer as to why the FL is still dressing like a man and using the same name the King knows her by after she escaped? And she goes to sign up for the contest using the name he knows her by. Did the guards not report to the king that she escaped and died and she actually thinks the King will not recognize her? Did I miss something? If she escaped wouldn’t she still be a wanted criminal? Entertaining show but a bit confused here ?

Yes, the story is classic period drama which this magnificent cast breathes fervor and life into. I too love to read the drama bios of the actors noting I’ve seen so much of their work which has been spectacular. As viewers of drama, aren’t we asked to suspend our own reality to enter into the dramas reality. So let’s not be overly critical about a woman dressed as a man which “nobody” notices. How about some leeway giving the drama poetic license. Give this beautiful drama a chance. I think it’s going to be one of the greats. Many of the greats didn’t get “cooking” until many episodes. One thing is for sure if you’ve seen the fine work of the cast in other dramas, they’re giving Captivating The King their best which is damn good. Enjoy. Highly recommended. ❤️

Jo Jung-suk has always been my favorite character in every kdrama he is in and I was feeling the same for this series, but the way they transformed his character from being a hero to a villain has me in mental tears. I hope they give his character more context as to why he had to do what he did because I know he didn’t want to be king but he was forced to be king to protect himself from death.

It has become unbearable watching this mash up type of series,full of cliches. I would rather watch a good old Viking series or some samurai series or those realistic interpretation of Korean historical drama than waste time on such a cliches series with such a bad actress,whose only expression is widening her eyes and opening her lips.
