Akiko (Masami Nagasawa) is a single mother and her son is Shuhei (Sho Gunji). Akiko casually has sex with other men, including Ryo (Sadawo Abe). Akiko is the only person whom Shuhei can rely on. One day, Shuhei is involved in a tragedy.

What I can't understand is, she doesn't give a rat's ass about her parents, her sister, her kids and yet she chose's that low life over the handsome business owner. I don't get that. Seems like she doesn't care who it is as long as it's a warm body, why not go with the better looking and that actually has a future. Those poor kids.

Nichaporn Dec 29 2020 2:25 am Very good movie. I like it very much. It made me cry at the end of the movie when Shuhei said that he loves his mom. He liked to be in prison because he got food continuously and had time to read. Good movie but a little bit sad if this is a real story.

Zim Nov 30 2020 11:27 am I thought the way the part at the end was juxtaposed with their initial abandonment. Was being abandoned to live on the streets not itself a slow murder? Even in the end when Shuhei eventually admits he loves his mother to the social worker he prefaces it by saying he can eat and read books in jail; though she appears incredulous there's no particular reason to trust her reaction since after this she goes to visit his mom and seems to treat her as a surrogate of sorts for her own abusive mother she mentions earlier in the film, bringing her hand to her face, and so on.

An interesting indictment on how society treats those in poverty.

Stacey L Schmid Nov 12 2020 12:31 pm This movie has touched on the very core and soul of my being. I literally could not sleep last night. I was troubled by everything in this movie. I get the family was tired of her but what about their grandson and her nephew? That right there incensed me. I was super frustrated and angry. Then at the same time as the movie unfolded I became entangled in the mother and son's bond, that innate bond that no mortal man can sever. A bond that is God given, birthright. When you carry children and give them life in this world there is a bond that is indescribable. There is a deep yearning an ache when you are separated from your child and vice versa. The level of Mental Illness, alcohol abuse and everything that goes along with it was heart wrenching. This movie made me take a look at myself first then society and the world. This is still happening right now as we speak. During the movie I was hoping a bystander would intervene? Why not the father? Somebody should have saved this child and his mother before things became so out of control the way back appeared to be endless. This movie touched on every human emotion and every spiritual element know to man and across the veil. Excellent movie!!! Excellent!!!

Martina Fink Nov 04 2020 2:13 pm What a film! I was shouting towards Shuhei & Akiko. I didn't understand why Aya didn't try more to get the Kuds away. At that point in their life you could see that Akiko was NO fit Mother. I guess it's the Japanese way of not interfering in strangers business...in my Country (Austria)the kids would have been taken away she was sleeping on the street with them. What a sad and not really needed to happen story if someine ofcthe people she was with just did was right,save them kids from this unfit Mother. I hope after his 12 year's in Prison he doesn't look for her...or his Sister.
