In the 1950's, right after the Korean War, Yoon Jeong-Nyeon (Kim Tae-Ri) barely makes a living by selling clams with her mother Seo Yong-Rye (Moon So-Ri) in Mokpo. Her dream is to go to Seoul and work as an actress for a woman's gukguek theater company, while becoming rich. One day, Yoon Jeong-Nyeon watches a performance by the Maeran Woman’s Gukguek Theater Company, which is led by Director Kang So-Bok (Ra Mi-Ran). The theater company came to Mokpo from Seoul during their nationwide tour. Seeing their performance, Yoon Jeong-Nyeon is inspired to turn her dream into reality. She secretly gets into the luggage compartment of the Maeran Woman’s Gukguek Theater Company and soon becomes a trainee for the theater company in Seoul. There, she meets Heo Young-Seo (Shin Ye-Eun). Heo Young-Seo is also a trainee and excellent at singing, dancing, and acting. As time passes, Yoon Jeong-Nyeon and Heo Young-Seo become rivals with each other.

I went in blind, knowing nothing of the storyline or anything about the pansori singers, and I was captured from first to last episode. The acting was superb. The singing voices were amazing. Who knew I would be captured by this type of musical storytelling and have a catch in my throat each time the characters sang?

J Oct 24 2025 6:56 pm It’s so crazy how good this is. I don’t know pansori or think their singing is great or understand their difference in levels, But The Acting Is Wow. It was like watching behind-the-scenes-dramatized theatre - which if you’re into theatre at all, this is like a dream-come-true for anyone. The scenes that floors me the most is when they switch their acting on/off, and the on-stage acting. I was completely immersed in it. Damn, this is probably one of the top dramas on any language for me. Will probably rewatch it one day, and I rarely rewatch anything.

Love the plot, the main plot is really realistic, yes of course there are some unrealistic plot but this is fiction omfg of course there will be unrealistic twists. However, the drama is excellent, the message is well delivered, acting is top notch, and the skills omg the actors can really sing and act really well, have no idea how many hours they spent to develop their skills !

yunheeq May 09 2025 4:32 am I love this drama. I didn’t have high expectations at first, but as the story unfolded, I found myself clapping, crying, and wishing it wouldn’t end so soon. It’s a truly moving and powerful story and I absolutely love it!

At first, I thought it was a tribute to a real-life legendary Korean singer, someone they deeply respected and wanted to honor. but it was a masterpiece work from webtoon. I know most K-dramas are made with passion and care, but this one is really something else. Their emotion and skill made every moment unforgettable.

FromFlorida Mar 09 2025 11:18 am This was mind blowing. I can’t imagine how much work went into making it. Captivating and full of talented actors - Kim Tae-Ri is extraordinary from start to finish - but the whole cast is stellar.

I cried from how moving the storytelling is. Every one put their heart and soul into making this and it shows. The dancing and theater scenes were thrilling. I wish I could attend one of the shows.

I like the complex relationships between the characters - which was also mirrored in the characters they portrayed. Very sophisticated and beautifully produced.

The theme song “The Bird” is literally a hoot. I learned a lot about Korean culture and history too (certain subjects inspired me to read more about it on Wikipedia).

Congrats to everyone involved in making this story come alive.

The storyline is fresh, no male leads, not even kissing scenes but it feels complete. Kim taeri who's already 34y.o could portray the spirit and stuborness of a 19yo so perfectly. Watching her character's growth as an gukgeuk actress was rly fascinating. This drama is a gem, a masterpiece. Recommended 1000℅

Kim Taeri never ceases to amaze me with her acting and her singing was a revelation. Just when I thought she couldn't top her acting in Revenant, she goes up another level here. The other cast members brought their A-game to match Taeri and it's great that many of them are gaining the recognition they deserve.

The drama was a visual feast and kudos to the director, Jung Ji-in, and renown costume director, Cho Sang-kyung.

1. Plot Synopsis - it's been taken from the original webtoon, not the drama.

2. Of course there are other better singers than Kim Taeri, but there aren't any better actors. Park Jin Joo has only had support or guest roles so far, so she doesn't have the acting background to take on this lead role. The simple fact of the matter is that the drama wouldn't have been made without Kim Taeri signing up to it; she attracted other top actors to join and the large audience to watch it.

3. Jeongnyeon in the webtoon is a 16 year old, who is loud, energetic and strong-minded, so that is what Kim Taeri is trying to portray in the drama. I don't think she over-acts at all, but if you think she does, you should check out the webtoon to see if she gets the characterisation right.

Ji Nov 22 2024 9:01 am Finally finished this drama and it woawed me, woaw! Kim Taeri is all about high quality acting. She always manages to portray every character she plays brilliantly and she makes sure no one moves on easily. While the plot is not totally new, the acting of all the cast and the introduction to pansori really make up for it. It's all satisfactory, really. I also love the subtle GL throughout the story. I feel sad for Jeongnyeon, but in that era, what choice do a poor girl have? Lots of things going on at the same time so our Jooran has to go.

The storyline would then likely change,not around Jeongnyeon pursuing gukgeuk, but to survive in new environment so she could be rich just like her dream

The transition of the main casts from theatre to silver screen. There’s still a lot of room for the characters to develop. 3. I feel Jung Eun Chae’s and Kim Yoon Hye’s characters will play significant roles in next season. 4. A new antagonist?

It is true that a good script is the basis for the characters' believability, but it is the actors' ability to show emotion, awareness, and empathy that makes the characters real.

Waiting to watch Jeongnyeon and everybody in this drama every weekends was so exciting. a masterpiece. this drama reminds me of a manga "Glass no Kamen", about a poor countryside girl who joins a theater troupe, Kitajima Maya has an amazing talent just like Jeongnyeon, and her rival is a rich, pretty, talented, famous girl named Himekawa Ayumi. I wish there's season 2 or special episode of this drama.

wede Nov 18 2024 8:23 pm Great drama! Kim Taeri is excellent as always, my appreciation for Shin Yeeun grew by a lot, and Woo Davi is a revelation! they all make the long episodes flew by. My only complain is about the ending (I guess in the Webtoon/ novel this is just the end of an act/ arc instead of the story) - triumphant but leaves more questions than answers haha, an epilogue wouldve been nice detailing the fates of everyone.

It fully depicted a whole journey and putting yourself in each of the character's shoes,you'd realize they all had a reason for how they turned out at the end. Although I expected okyeong to just show up to cheer for them like hyerang did,I'm glad they all found their place. This is a whole new level of comfort drama and hope each of the actors get the recognition they all deserve especially the others like jooran and chorok and even jeongnyeon's sister. Got to feel a new wave of emotions with this and as usual Kim taeri never disappoints

During Twenty-Five Twenty One era, I made mistake. While waiting for next episodes, I re-watched Mr. Sunshine. Can you imagine how broken my heart was for having two "happy" open ending? TT...

Kris So Nov 11 2024 11:17 pm Kim Tae-ri deserves to win the highest acting award on this performance, especially in episode 8 where she highlighted her acting strength that syncs with the emotional weight of the episode's story.

The ensemble of cast is also not to be trifled with - their sticky camarederie and acting are superb. This is what a relevant period drama should contain - well-written story, beautiful set and cinematography, topnotch acting, and heart-warming plot.

Moh Nov 06 2024 7:18 am I started watching Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born and came to know the original novel is a queer novel, and I have to say, even though they didn't add or mention any sapphic content, the implications are GREAT! It creates such a tension that leaves you with so much angst. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! Love the acting of all the actresses in this series. After watching the 8th episode, even though I understand nothing of Pansori, I bawled my eyes at Jeongnyeon's performance. I'm so looking forward to the upcoming episodes!

Just leave the damn cafe and tell your friend you were fired for not singing,a good friend will understand. Aside this,the story is very good and I love it

Steve Oct 23 2024 11:33 pm With so many mediocre and derivative dramas airing these days, it was a surprise to find Jeongnyeon. This drama is genuinely different and highly watchable through two episodes. It is not quite a period piece or a musical, although it feels like Rodgers and Hammerstein could have wrote it. And I agree with everyone else here: Kim Tae-Ri is the real deal!

It's amazing that she took singing, dancing and dialect lessons for three years while also filming Twenty Five Twenty One and Revenant! Jeong Nyeon is spectacular so far and I hope it gets the ratings it deserves.
