Queen Hwaryeong (Kim Hye-Soo) is supposed to act with grace and dignity, but she has sons who are troublemaker princes. She gives up on those protocols and she struggles to change her sons into eligible princes through education.

The Queen in as much as her children's position were secured she suffered a lot because of her son's. She showed a practical example of a mother's true love for her children.

Dafengep Dec 30 2024 6:29 am Every episodes has an interesting story, however, it's not as memorable as I've expected.I love the fact that you would really get hooked on finding out which is which. It has a great mix of romance but heavy on mystery. Romance would make you exhilarated because of the actor and actress playing. I love them couple (wish they had moree scenes). And the rest focuses on the story's plot. Would recommend.

Xxx Jul 02 2024 7:11 am Probably the only saeguk drama that i've watched that left a huge impact on me. That's how wholesome and remarkable it is. Every episode ended with a cliffhanger that would leave you curious what will gonna happen in the next episode. I learned so many lessons in life that it hurts but at the same time it felt familiar because I can relate.

Queen Hye Soo, the mother is mothering! One the best actresses undoubtedly! Both beauty and strong personality inside out. She always choose roles that portray those characteristics so I already know that this another series of her will not disappoint.

Good Job for the whole cast! They were all amazing! ^^

Not a boring moment, very heart warming and of course the evil ones are always plotting something.. but that’s what great is the aftermath of it. Happy clap ? great drama. I wish it never ended.

Her last scene with her son Uiseong seemed to indicate that she was blind as she did not see Queen Im Hwa-Ryeong in the courtyard. How did she become blind or did she just not see the queen? There's no way she could have missed her.

She would go to any lengths to be there for her children even if they go off in another direction..she understands and never wavers in her love for each one...the last scene was extraordinary..thinking her job was about over , a little one wanted to see if he could fly off the roof...meaning her work is never finished..how awesome is the ending!!!

You will fall in love, your heart will enflate with joy and then be shattered in pieces, and then you'll be enamored again Under the Queen's Umbrella rollercoaster. While I'm a biased Kim Hye-Soo fan, her performance as queen made this series a home run. Her character's strength as a woman, mother, wife, and her love as a surrogate mother figure to others makes her such a powerful figure. She evokes such empathy from the audience as she fights for justice within the confines of Joseon patriarchy and misogynistic rule. Kim Hae-Sook's villainous performance was fantastic, and their shared scenes were some of the best--2 powerful women fighting against one another exhausting different methods afforded to them in this time period.

Small criticisms are the lack of closure for some of the character storylines, such as some of the sons/brothers who had long arcs and some abruptness toward the end. All forgiveable for a such a legendary series. A must watch!

Now have seen it again and am still in awe at how good this drama was. Thumbs up to the actors, actress, production team and everyone that contributed in creating this master piece

Umbrella symbolize the protection she gives for all of her children .Every thing she do is to protect her children . She is supporting the king very much & although she is fragile regarding king's affection she is very good with consorts too. Even these consorts & princes shows different type of parenting styles .

The writer done a really good job. She crafted a lot of cool characters. Especially Queen Im Hwaryeong. I never saw a woman main character on k-dramas who's as elegant, as smart, as wise and as strong as her. The writer also done a really good job with the plot. The 3 years process of writing must be worth it. Thank you for writing such a beautiful story that i will keep in my heart for a really long time ?

The director also done a really good job. There are many beautiful scenes that directed perfectly. You served my eyes with the beauty of Joseon period.

The casts... They're amazing! It's one of the best casting in the history. Every actors really fit to their role. It must be a destiny.

I'm so sad because this drama only has 16 episodes. Even if it has 50 episodes, i would still watch it.

I saw love to new faces of the actors here. Seongnam was my ffavorite role. Muan too was really amazing. The cast was best. This drama is a bit different from other saeguk dramas. The palace has been shown in a different perspective here. I recommend this drama to all who like historical dramas with political side.

Loved the drama , specially the two super actresses and Choi Won Young as the leads together with talented supporting cast. Bravo Very uplifting fun and poignant storyline that focused mainly about mother’s love and power. To me adding the trans issue was a little too westernized or modernized to fit this historical drama, specially the way it was developed at the end, where even the evil grandmother stopped her vengeful pursuit against the trans prince, but continued against the others.

This shows how a mother can be so selfless and loving towards her children. The Queen faced the different situations a normal mother could face - losing a child, a child who's part of LGBTQ+ family, early pregnancy, letting go of a child who wants to explore the world, and many other things. It's so amazing how she tried to resolved things and still be loving towards the people around her. Very nice plot.

I love how loving the siblings are toward each other. We are so over the jealousy between siblings though it's part of the plot for their step siblings but I love how the grand princes protect each other.

It's a must-watch!

Like the conversation between queen dowager and the young prince seongnam, like what did he witnessed of the evil dowager’s doing. And i think the back story of the queen would be adventurous, how did she attained her position?

Mango Dec 06 2022 11:20 pm Truly one of the best dramas in 2022. Great storyline with strong notions of mother's love, brotherhood and prince's competition. It starts off comical and leads to the main storyplot but is full heartwarming and touching moments that made me tear. Excellent acting esp from Kim Hae Sook, Kim Hye Soo and Choi Won Young. Storyline and character development/progression was all developed nicely too such that it doesnt feel too abrupt. There is also a smooth integration of modern concepts in Joseon period.

Only flaw imo is that the ending of the Queen Dowager conflict feels abit incomplete and rushed. But at the same time, if its dragged on any further, it may feel draggy esp since this is more of a modern historical drama rather than a real sageuk drama. Some people may also feel that some parts are unrealistic (I agree) but imo it doesnt really matter since this drama has never portrayed itself as a serious sageuk drama and afterall, its a modern historical kdrama.

Although it's the best 2022 sageuk. The ending shots are total favoritism. It's supposed to be the whole palace members being starred instead of 3 princes

Love how the writer well-written the plots without unnecessary silly incidents and clearly send messages to audiences in many aspects. Beautiful cinematography. Love everything about this drama. Kim Hye-soo she nailed her character in this drama perfectly as well as Kim Hae-sook auntie. This is one best Korean-historical drama by far.

And how well did the drama take on Grand Prince Gyeseong's gender conflict. Wonderfully scripted and rounded of in the most complete sense making it much more than a token inclusion in the storyline.

Bravo to the writer!

The casting Director hit it out of the park! OMG! Kim Hye Soo & Kim Hai Sook we’re magnificent! Best actress awards for both. I am an unashamed fan of Kim Hye Soo who is one of Korea’s finest actresses. Each of the princes made their role their own. Beautiful work. So many actors we loved hating …so good…?. Really new innovative take in a period drama…fabulous award worthy script…great tension moved the story all the way through…cinematography stunning…costumes exceptional. Thank you so so much! WOW!

I cried watching when the first Crown Prince died and now, I just finished watching the last episode. Very realistic plot, they all nailed it, all of them. Cheong ha scenes were also very refreshing to watch, her character was so pure and sincere, I could feel the loyalty and undying love she had for the crown prince. All in all 10/10 <3<3

I also thought there could be a bloody coup stage by Physician Kwon, his son Uiseong and the Hwang Family but yikessss everything falls to the hand of the Devil Dowager (The Devil Dowager is a puppet master- the root cause of all evil, I hope she will meet her end in a devastating manner. Consort Hwang deserved all those pain I hope Queen Hwaryeong will get to know that Consort Hwang did take part in poisoning the crown prince and the Queen should punished her by drinking the same poison, then Uiseong will witness how her mother died and I hope he will get crazy afterwards (Hwang Family deserved greater punishment)

Anyhow, Everyone will get protected under Queen Hwaryeongs' umbrella, definitely she will also protect the king at all cost.

So saddd that tonight will be the last episode huhuhu hoping for a satisfying finale ^^

It actually goes along with the storyline of the Queen fiercely protecting those she loves from the Dowager Queen while encouraging them to grow and mature. As far as Cheong Ha being more like Kim Tae Ri’s character in “Mr. Sunshine,” why? Not every female in every drama has to be strong and independent. Wouldn’t it be boring if they all were? Cheong Ha is young and immature, but she is loyal to the Crown Prince and would probably mature into her role as Crown Princess if this was a longer drama.

This is the first time I see her in a historical drama and she totally nailed it! I think she is the best queen I've ever seen in K-drama: badass, charismatic, smart, wise, and funny. One thing that irritates me was Cheong-Ha's character. I don't know, I find her a little bit annoying in the beginning of her appearance. She smiles too much, and the way she chased Seongnam was like an obsessive fangirl. I would love her character if she was more like Kim Taeri as Go Ae Shin in Mr. Sunshine. And yeah, her romance with Seongnam is unnecessary in the drama's plot. LoL

I never realized the twist of the story, the current king cannot open a re-invistagation of his late brother because he is also involved(somehow) for murdering his brother so he can became the crown prince and later king.

I am excited to know what would be the ending of this kdrama.

I realize there12 Princes, but 5 belong to the current Queen, 7 belong to the Concubines & the King. Well less 1 (Uiseong), who doesn't belong to the King, but to the not so Dead Ex-Crown Prince who should of become King, that the current King's Mother thought She Killed! And the devil dowager will be left alone in her own fight (doom is coming to her) or maybe there's a last minute character development.

If he really is the grandson of the deposed Queen that means he has a Yoon blood which is closely related to his wife, the Crown Princess Cheongha. And that is a big no. There's a reason why there was an old Korean law until the early 90s that you cannot marry someone with the same surname.

They are the definition of mama and papa bear !!! They both love and care equally for all their kids (mama bear even loves the other princes).

The only thing bothering me a lot is Crown princess Cheongha she keeps showing her teeth she has no other expression than smiling and showing her teeth.

Da-Knee Nov 19 2022 10:04 am Daebak! Episode 11 was soo good finally Consort Tae and Bogeom regain their senses, thanks to the benevolence of Queen Hwa Ryeong.

I'm not yet convinced that our Queen Hwa-Reyeong is the biological mother of CP Seongnam because of the previous episodes last week as I remember there is a scene where it shows that Queen Dowager is taking away a baby from a woman probably from a concubine and maybe that concubine died and Queen Hwa-Ryeong adopted that child because that concubine is a friend of our Queen, that's why Queen Dowager refuses to accept Seongnam as crown prince because he is a child of a dead concubine. (SPOILER!! Seongnam pass the paternity test because the current King is really his father but not the queens biological son). I'm still not convinced with episode 11 that Queen Hwa-Reyeon is the biological mother of Seongnam hmmmmm.

I guess I'am right with my speculation that Consort Hwang and Physician Kwon are the parents of Uiseong even the Dowager already knows it but she try to cover it because Consort Hwang and Chief State Councilor is still useful to her, maybe the Dowager will disposed them afterwards haha. And Chief State Councilor, Consort Hwang and Physician Kwon are in hand together, forming an army to usurp the throne.

Anyways looking forward for tomorrow's episode 12. And really all the episodes of UTQU/Shuroop are well written and I can't wait to watch this kdrama every weekend. I love this dramaa so muchhhh

so many of you are saying gyeseong's storyline of being trans is unnecessary and ruining the drama but guess what? trans people are not made up! they did not choose to be trans! and they don't only exist in the 21st century! trans people have existed throughout history, yes even in the times of kings and queens. they deserve representation. trans people deserve to see themselves on television, no matter if it's a sageuk or a thriller show. if seeing a 'prince' realize she's a woman really annoys you, maybe you should examine your morals instead of complaining.

Initially I though he may have been one of the concubines sons that died and she adopted him but now I think he might actually be Queen Yoons grandson (the former CPs son). It would explain why the dowager hates him so much. I feel like the king felt guilty about killing his brother and they both planned to adopt him and based on what Consort Hwang said in the earlier episodes "Put things in their right order". This would make sense since the king is bringing back people who were faithful to the throne and opposed him being king.I don't think that master Toji and gang are bad guys and they will stop the rebellion when the "rightful heir" ,Seongnam, takes the throne. I also feel like the kings letter to Park Gyeong U had more to it because I don't think he would have come back to serve this king but he would comeback to serve the heir of the previous CP that was killed. Just my thoughts tho,

You deserved more than getting demoted Consort Hwang and I still hope that Consort Tae will come to her senses (she's way too proud because she got dowagers back)

Since Physician Kwon has a relationship with Consort Hwang as shown in previous episodes, I got to believed that Uiseong is not a legitimate prince but rather he's a son of a mere physician/rebel.

I hope the past story behind Seongnam's life will resurfaced in the next episodes, I'm getting curious about him being a legitimate grand prince.

I love also that in the series the king is aware of her mother bad attention and how he respect the queen. The plot on the princes however is kinda overwhelmed for me. In a lot of historical as, Dowagers tend to fall quite easily and routinely into these overly dramatic characterisations of evil women, however Kim Hae Sook, gives us just the right amount of drama. And her scenes with equally incredible Kim Hye Soo just eat. Every. Time.

Now I’ve seen a comment saying that it seems unrealistic to have trans portrayal in a historical - that seems to promote or align with some “narrative” being forced upon youth. To that I say - unfortunately you have been deceived into thinking these kinds of things didn’t happen historically. In fact, in a lot non western societies, it was relatively common and far more tolerated than countries heavily systemised by christianic dogma. So while it may seem like an increase in trend for trans stories in our mainstream media; you are incredibly naive to think gender hasn’t been tested in civilisations before us. You not are witnessing an increased effort to push lifestyles upon our youth, but an effort to rectify centuries of misleading education pushing the narrative that they either never existed or if they did - weren’t ever accepted.

And tv shoes don’t make people trans; being trans makes people trans.

Toni Nov 08 2022 10:28 am This show is intense and it has me gripping something as I wonder how the Queen deals with every evil encounter that’s being thrown at her. Love the storyline and the relationships that she had built with her sons. I wonder why the second grand prince had to live outside of the palace when he was young? Only time will tell, but if I were to make a guess, it would be that the second grand prince had to the kings brothers real child, but they adopted him to protect him from getting killed. Idk ??‍♀️ ?. One thing I know for sure is that the king definitely loves the queen esp since she gave him 5 sons and his concubines only 1 each… just saying ?

Dy Nov 07 2022 6:27 pm Hmmm..? There were 8 Princes in their classroom beside 4 Grand Princes, yet only 7 concubines with their sons (on of each) were appeared and named... Who is this last 'mysterious' Prince? Or maybe he is the youngest of the current King's half-brother, which means his mother likely in the Temple just like the fate of every concubines of late Kings (beside the 'lucky' ones that had their sons as Kings, they would jump the rank from concubines to Queen Dowagers, just like the current one in this drama)?

Yeeshah Nov 07 2022 4:35 pm I hate how the court officials talk to the king and queen especially the chief state counsellor and queen dower. He has no respect and even threatens the king. Even if they did that to the queen, most of the other period dramas make it such that the king is feared by all and has the final say! It’s super annoying to watch. I hope grand prince seongnam becomes the new crown prince although it seems quite predictable if he does. Overall great drama, I love the queen’s charisma, you can’t mess with a true mother!

Apart from deep respect for each other I sense love but feel they are held apart because of the dowager. - this drama being called Under the Queens Umbrella I feel like not only will she have to protect her sons, but also some of the other concubines sons and maybe even the king. Prince Bogum and his mother are heading down a very dangerous path by taking on a fight they can’t handle and our queen will have to step up to protect them. - I’m still unsure of Prince Seongnyangs back story. Why was he the only one of her sons that grew up outside the palace. I feel like he may not be her biological son( maybe he was the son of a concubine who died) and she adopted him.

This shows that a mother can do anything when it comes to her children. Korea until now is not open minded to Lesbian Gay fed. Which this drama educate them that no matter what gender your child is, may it be gay, the parents should be the one accepting it first so as the society will follow. The queen still supported her son when she found out he was a gay.

Somebody needs to call the chiropractor cause the mother & prince seongnam broke their back carrying the show. I love the theme so much, the mum is so awesome. Just wish the sons would at least mention that to her & appreciate her more (maybe that's intentional for the audience). The chance of getting a mum/queen like that in joseon is close to 0. She even reminds me of Mr Queen sometimes ? love the blend of comedy, whack mum getting a headache cause of her sons, the queen's crack personality, seongnam being the steadiest son. Everything is fun to watch including master toji (except typical evil politicking part between queen dowager & state councillor). I just know halfway the mum is gonna die & thats when the sons would all finally step up. Hopefully she'll stay alive til the end. Perfect casting. The show is great cause kim hye soo is perfect for the mother role.

She's amazing, the story is amazing and the message is strong. The unconditional love for every of her kid. The one with Prince Gyeseong is beautiful. To be accepted and acknowledged like that by a mother. Goosebumps. I wish every kid in the world would get mother like that ?

But, The Queen. Omg. I cant. She is such an incredible mother. I know She look so cruel sometimes. But, she understand, and still love the princes. Especially, Gyeseong's case :) We cant blame her something like that, we have to see the it still in Joseon era and that kind of thing were hard to accept. Ah there are also a rumour that Crown Prince actually not a real Crown Prince. Seongnam is the real one. He is hidden as commoner to make Himself safe from all the threats aimed at him. But, idk if it is right. So, Seongnam actually the oldest here?

Crafty Oct 23 2022 8:35 pm Man what is happening. Hes ill from a serious disease and they served him all kinds of fancy foods probably that got him vomitting. Like he was eating abalones etc. I really think the pace should be increased but i think it wont happen as writers probably dont have lot of scenarios so lot of scenes will be fillers with lil story progression. However,i am still liking seongnam's part and drama in general, but i think 4 episodes have gone and the writers have still not clearly established the main aim of drama, like in most shows by ep 4 we know whats the greater scheme of the show,here sometimes cohort selection comes, sometimes crown prince appointment comes, sometimes final king selection comes and then you then you see kim hye soo getting limelight and you wonder is the drama about crown princes etc or is it about the life of queen ? Who is the main character here and it's about whose life?

Anyways, was just sharing my thoughts, but drama is enjoyable, locations are pleasent, cinematography is beautiful, 1st episode was fast paced and intense, I also think kim hye soos/queens as well mother queens screentime should be increased and more conspiracies should be added to amplify shock factor. At first ihad thought crown princes disease is due to arsenic poisoning but i think its a real disease.

Ep3 was v slow and draggy unlike 1, cmon directors and writers increase the tension n intensity, we need more fiery scenes btw queen n her mother in law and endless dose of mind games and conspiracies rather than slowww pace and queen constantly running around in the palace. I get anxiety ftom queen slways wslking fast.

Honestly in korean dramas saeguks are almost always like rating tickets kind of thing, and if story is even slightly intriguing then theres no limit to them as we can see here. I hope to see story getting more and more interestjng and gritty i found many scenes in ep 2 boring as against ep 1. Really hope the drama keeps momentum and makes fight fierce between princes. Btw its not dark comedy. Its serious plus sprinkle of comic scenes and even in comic scenes we know they are suppsoed to be comical because of funny background music. Also what will happen to depised queens lone son and who ws spying on them.

Also they added mr queens vibe in queen by showing him casually running around and keeping her hands on sides of her dress like she has inserted in her pockets thats hye soos personal style tho. But her characters carefree vibe is very similar to mr queens. Rest story is very diff. Dont like the acting of crow prince , hes in cheer up too i think. Promising show tho.

The princes certainly contributed to watching more of their mischievous behaviors and keep wondering who the next crown prince will become king. Enjoyed watching all five of them and how their mom keeps up regardless of her mother in law making it difficult.

It's a very different dynamics between Kim Hye Soo (Queen) and Kim Hae Sook ( Dowager Queen) who are on opposing sides in this drama compared to their characters' chummy relationship in The Thieves.

Kim Hye Soo is truly awesome even if this is another historical drama, her portrayal is nowhere near Jang Hee Bin's character. This time she displayed a truly strong woman who tries everything in her power to protect her sons and her sons's rightful place in the throne yet there is no doubt she is the heroine of the story as opposed to her cunning, antagonistic JAng Hee Bin character in 2002.

The strange thing in this story is that her dowager queen mom in law became queen when she was only a concubine but in Joseon History it is no longer allowed after what happened to Jang Hee Bin.

Anyhow, can hardly wait for more episodes
