Notes

"Monster" takes over MBC's Monday & Tuesday 21:55 time slot previously occupied by "Glamorous Temptation" and followed by "Woman with a Suitcase" on September 26, 2016.
Early working title was "Pokkoon" ("Tyrant").
Actor Seo Kang-Joon and actress Hwang Jung-Eum were first offered the lead roles, but declined.
Episode 39 aired Tuesday, August 9th, instead of Monday, August 8th, due to airing of the Summer Olympics on Monday. Episode 40 will air Monday, August 22nd (skipping August 15th and 16th to air the Summer Olympics).

Summary: The exacerbated promotion of unethical values. Parallel to the central story of a man's revenge, runs with the same density of screen time, the story of a naive (or foolish?) woman who in her journey of revenge, confuses with love, the sick obsession of a psychopath! A man no less a monster than the one indicated by the script as the main one, just like the other monsters members of the criminal and corrupt clan.

Actually, the series should have had a plural title: Monsters.

kitan Jul 20 2022 2:07 am Actually, Sooyeon doesn't love KGT (Gitan). If love really loves, she must always protect the person she loves. But when she learned that DGW tried to kill KGT by blaming the murder on KGT, she remained calm and just looking for evidence. But when knowing the truth, because KGT was killed, if she fell in love with him from DGW's act of trying to put her lover in prison, leading to KGT's death, she still fell in love with DGW. If she really loves KGT, she must find a way to get revenge on DGW this way and then always believe him. There were times when she discovered many of DGW's lies that she still pitied and sometimes even loved him and gave him many opportunities to correct and sometimes distrust KGT. Really, if the director let SY always love and protect KGT to the end, the movie would be really much more attractive. In general, she is always wavering and KGT even though the president's son pursues her, he always refuses and still believes in SY, always protecting her.

[One more thing Shin Young was the best character in the story mainly because she was consistent she had a character adjustment but she still had a good heart underneath all the glamour Jo Bo-Ah did an amazing job in this

Gook Chul/ Gi Tan' Character; Eyes... Gone! Parents... Killed! Potential brother in-law... Killed! His Life... Gone! His Memories.. Gone! (Amnesia) And again, Memories... Gone! (Amnesia for the 2nd time) His Girl... Gone! (to the guy who plotted to kill him) and Again his Eyes... Gone!

Screen writers must have really hate this character! LOL

dramanoodles Sep 19 2019 3:11 am @monsters16 the entire concept of this drama is power and outsmarting between characters, Kang Ki Tan lost everything and when he was finally in a position to take complete revenge on his enemies, it’s understandable why his character became so calm and confidence toward every situations (that he already been through. @BillyXan you took the point of this whole thing every differently than what it meant to be. Although the main female lead became extremely naive later on but just remember how much Ki-Woong done for her and she admitted that she had feeling for him at one point, so obviously she was sadden by his death (especially how he sacrificed for her) despite being a horrible and greedy villain. The one who started all this got the best payout possible (death by the law), all the supporting characters got a promotion, the messed up rich family became one again, I agree that the last scene could’ve been extended for a happy ending but open/hang ending are always an option to. You shouldn’t trash the entire thing with simply how one character sad by another death and the ending wasn’t as happy as you wish.

kellie Feb 08 2019 8:17 am Hard to believe it's written by the same writer who did Giant and Salaryman. The directing gets a pan too. These are mostly solid veteran actors. Any director who can make them look so stiff and rehearsed ("now I turn and walk out the door") ought to find some other line of work.

Mr Lee Deok Hwa,his part being calm spoken,i love it too.and Jin Tae Hyun really funny and Jo Bo Ah i love her acting really made me laughed.i just hope that the ending was that their love story are nice ending.Park Ji Hwan and Jo Bo Ah,and Sung Yu Ri and Park Ki Woong ends up together.Korean actors and actresses are 1000% the best in acting i love them all.muah,muah

BillyXan Apr 25 2017 12:10 pm This drama is a complete skip and I truly hate the fact that I spent my time watching it. It does not have a story to justify its long episode count and in the end I think that is what hurt this drama the most. The first half was interesting and I was happy with the pace and structure they were going with. The leads were fighting for each other and everything seemed like it would work out. But at the half way point they pull the rug and completely mess everything up. The characters motivations change and the main female lead seems to no longer care for the male lead. She sees the obvious bad guy’s tears and sorrow and goes completely over to his side. She begins to believe his lies and even defends his actions to the male lead who was wronged in the first place. This was very annoying as I know that the other supporting characters could believe his lies but why in the world did she believe him. She clearly saw him lie all the time and knew that he framed the male lead in the first place. Just because he started to cry and had a sad back story is not justification for all the wrong he has done. Even after learning the truth she is still willing to give him a hundred chances to tell the truth and states that she will remain by her side. WHY? He has shown that he is a greedy and remorseless bastard that only cares for himself and the male lead still pines for her even after her continued ignorance. I almost flipped out when she ends up marrying the bad guy near the end right in front of the male lead. I was like WTF is the bullshit. In the end the bad guy dies and she still goes to his grave despite the fact that he lied and cheated her out of her original love for the male lead. After everything happens she then leaves the male lead all alone while he has gone blind for seemingly no reason. She gave so many chances to the villain but didn’t go back to the male lead that she claimed she still loved for some moronically flawed reason. Honestly at this point all I wanted as a decent ending but the drama refused to even give us that by ending with this cliff hanger where the lead goes into a surgery where he could end up dying on the operating table. God this drama pissed me off to no end. The main villain got everything handed to him way to easily, the female lead became this total cold bitch at the end, and we don’t even get a good ending out of all this. This drama is a total skip in my book. Trust me and do not watch. I normally do not go this long or spoilery in my comments but I have to warn people to avoid this drama. Life is just too short for terrible dramas like this one.

monster Jan 28 2017 4:05 pm this is one of the best korean drama I ever watched but the writer was not fair nd failed something..1) soo hyun is one of the lead charactets but her presence only lasted for about 30episodes ofwc she is was soo good...was disappointed 2) oh seo yeon her love for gitan was not clear ever since kang tan went missing for the whole year .it later seemed she did not care for him.on top of that she became so secretive to tan after sh got engaged to gunwoo and also when she came bavk from german her reason was gu woo even tho she knew kang tan went blind.sh later started to care for him to me itwas fakewa

The writer should have kept Gun Woo as a villain and not tried to justify his actions, evilness cannot be justified. He chose to be evil, it might be my opinion but he didnt deserve love from Oh Soo Yeon. Soo Yeon should have fought harder for Gi Tan because she became a lawyer in the first place to help Gi Tan right? So i thought her love was everlasting. On the other hand, Shin Young only loved one guy and she fought for it even though she knows Gi Tan would never love her, she still fought. And thats what love is.

I love the character,the story flow in the beginning but it just became draggy at the end(might have to do with 50 long eps which can become a big burden for writers) honestly,just watch the first 25 episodes trust me

The drama has a unique plot and speaking of the ending, I think the makers of this drama wanted to keep us all in extreme suspense even after the end of the drama so my advice to the makers of Monster is to start filming for a Sequel because I am not very satisfied yet. I have watched over 100 and counting Korean dramas and believe me i have not watched a drama as unique and different as Monster. Take my advice and you will see the number of Awards that will be claimed by Monster in the future. Kamsamnida

Lethal Nov 01 2016 7:21 am I will deliver the bad news first. MONSTER is a solid grade C drama. Fifty episodes of linear revenge plot is dragged out and boring. And the big pay off? You will not get a satisfying ending. If you watch this show. Expect empty threats exchanged every single episode, none realistic IQ drop even among the more cunning characters, and the worst part - sudden dramatic illness out of the blue used to progress the plot. These are big NO-NOs in my book.

Now let me give you a couple of reasons why you might want to pick up this show. Jung Bo-Suk's was brilliant as Byun Il-Jae. Villains create hero, this show would not be worth anyone's time without Jung Bo-Suk's contribution. In addition, the secondary love line is much more interesting than main cast love triangle.

I cannot wish anyone to truly enjoy this show. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes.

While I get that she might have started things up with DGW as a means of forcing KKT to forget about her, since his past memories of her gave him those headaches (which I thought was really stupid btw). But as DGW was scheming things and guilt tripping her to keep her by his side, she was totally wavering. Like when KKT confesses how he fell in love with her three times and didn't want to lose her again, she starts thinking of DGW and turns down KKT. So their little reunion at the end, eh I didn't really care too much about it. Surprisingly, I actually really liked the KKT x DSY couple.

Although I didn't like the lead actress, I must admit it wasn't bad and overall I was hooked by this drama. The ending couldn't have been done better!

Bukk Sep 21 2016 11:27 am I truly enjoyed every episode of Monster. I commend the writer for the suspense and angst presented in the drama. I know it is reported that it was an opened ending but that is far from true. The drama ended with a commitment between KKT and OSY. So many viewers projected their own viewpoints in their comments that it almost took away from actually watching the drama. But, all the nuances served their purposes and in spite what appeared to be a betrayal between KKT and OSY, they were brought right back to full circle in their relationship; back in the same house, temporary blindness and two hearts beating as one. GW was a minor fluctuation between KKT and OSY, in the end their love never faded no matter how much they tried to go their separate ways, their love was and is circulatory. However, we should note this was not a Rom-Com, not a love story per se. Yet love is what prevailed. I hope this couple will do more dramas and movies together and that nothing can keep them apart, they truly entertain.

Davia Sep 09 2016 5:15 am I think that if viewers have attention issues than this drama will be difficult to follow. The story is detail oriented, intelligently written and takes concentration. There are very few dramas that are written well and this is thankfully one of them.

The writer understand corruption in business and politics and if you are interested in this subject also you won't be bored as each maneuver is different and well explained. It's not 100% tight but pretty tight.

People who say that the revenge motivation is not being instigated are not following the story. At no time is the protagonist not working towards destroying his enemies.

Some people also like to put down the love interest of the protagonist expecting her to have knowledge that is not presented to her by the writer. Again they are not following the story.

If one is in the mood for quick and easy entertainment this drama might not fit the bill.

Most of the characters are entertaining to watch. As usual Korea excels in character acting and this drama does not disappoint in that realm either. It does take some subtly to understand some of the characters. If facial cues are hard for a person to follow than this might be frustrating.

Otherwise if you find this kind of story interesting I don't think you will be disappointed. I've enjoyed it immensely so far and it's almost over.

dama Aug 31 2016 9:51 am This is very disappointing. The first 3 episodes were so intense and set for a promising revenge drama that just washed out to a confusing melo and the revenge forgotten. For so many episodes since the 30th KKT did nothing. So whatever happened to their love affair, was not just OSY's fault but also KKT. His priorities changed from revenge to being a corporate magnate. The revenge plot got ditched and replaced with the story of the Do and Hwangs and corporate finagling and fighting of the Do's and Hwangs. KKT's story got lost. They should have not started the drama with those 3 episodes instead started it with the unbelievable training. There is much story to be written of the characters and original at that but they opted for the well worn and tiring cliche plots. sigh .... glad I let the drama go.

SH QA Aug 29 2016 11:59 pm I binged-watched the first 20 episodes in one week, and the next 22 episodes over twelve weeks (...added 2 weeks for the Olympics). The crime drama turned into a melodrama, with layers of plots, subplots and no plot. Thankfully, there are 8 episodes left, and Kang Gi Tan should hopefully triumph over his enemies, in the end.

Sarah_oh Aug 22 2016 7:06 pm I was so looking forward to this drama before it was first telecast primarily because the scriptwriters are the ones behind "Empress Qi" and Kang Ji Hwan. But I gotta admit it's been quite disappointing. It's too draggy - 50 episodes - esp the ones on their training to be agents. The characters Guang woo and his sister are made to become nothing more comic relief chasing after both the male and female leads respectively. To me that only prolong my misery in watching this drama because it doesn't add any layers to it and does no justice to the actors playing GW and his sister. KJH whom I used to like as an actor seems to have lost his acting chops. His expressions are always the same. Watch this drama only you have plenty of time to kill.

SY is still inlove with KGT, one can't just fall out of love especially in this circumstance. This DGW is ruthless, he doesn't mind doing anything just to get what he wants, imagine him staging his attack just to make SY love him, acting like he just found the evidence and he's going to give it to her. Anyway I expect all this to happen, there's still a lot to show, considering the episodes left, it's still too early for KGT and SY to come back together.

Watching Episode 39 of SY and GW kissing scene, felt pity and sad for GT and can see how hurtful he was. How could SY did that ?? Anthony Aug 06 2016 5:00 pm I feel like this show is so addictive. I could catch myself watching so many episodes for entertainment. I have to say though, it shouldn't have 50 episodes. I don't believe it's one of the top shows of the year although it is very entertaining. Some of the scenes seem a bit forced and sometimes, it seems too unrealistic. 1. When the great Chinese boss takes Gi Tan as his son, that was a bit ridiculous. A complete stranger being the successor of such a big organization. I would understand if the show needed that to happen in order to do something amazing but it didn't really. 2. Also, the fact that so many people who otherwise wouldn't start falling in love with the main characters. It seems a tad bit unrealistic. Do Gun, Gi Tan, and Do Gwang for So Yeon and Ok Chae, So Yeon (half him half Do Gun), and Do Shin for Gi Tan. Some of the relationships seem a bit forced. I normally wouldn't mind because it is a drama and it adds more humor to the show but Do Gwang suddenly liking So Yeon just didn't make any sense whatsoever to me. One of my biggest complaints about the show is that they don't show the character develop much. They simply gloss over that fact and show the character suddenly change and gain so much power. 1. I would have liked to see Gi Tan develop more. They basically skip that and show him trying to get his revenge but I believe it would have been so much more meaningful to see how he became what he is in detail. After (i think) 10 years from being the young successor of Sudo hospital, he becomes a beggar, and then he is helped by Ok Chae accumulating enough of a reputation to apply to Dodo Group. I would have liked to see the moments that really changed him and really made an impression on him. But mainly what I got was Gi Tan coming back with a vengeance and vast resources 2. After Gi Tan was shot in the head, two years passed and he (once again) suddenly accumulates vast power being the son of the Chinese boss. But it feels so much less meaningful and unrealistic. Someone suddenly giving him all their power. But I guess it's also an aspect of the show that makes it so addictive. You get to see the little guy come back with new capability and take down the monster Byun II Jae. I felt that this made the show a tad superficial.

However, there were a lot of good points in the show. It was very realistic in other regards and had really good plot at some points. 1. Instead of Gi Tan suddenly changing from a hobo to an executive, he gets help from Ok Chae. I'm very glad about that because since the first episodes, I thought he would suddenly just pull himself up from out of poverty which would've been just too unrealistic. 2. Gi Tan's conformation with Mike Chang and betraying him after helping him was absolutely amazing to watch. I completely wouldn't have expected him to betray Mike. It was so risky and so dangerous. Also, at the end, when he let Mike go but asked him to punch him in the face. That was so enjoyable to watch. 3. The beginning scenes of Monster with the young Gi Tan and So Yeon (although I know these are not their original names). They were so cute and raw. Gi Tan being shy, confused, and so angry. It was so painful to watch but so realistic and sad. I would have liked to see their story more but it was really good. 4. Byun II Jae in court was a surprise. I thought almost completely that he was destroyed but there he was making such a strong defense for himself. I have to admire his capability to defend himself. I thought he was a goner for sure but he cast so much doubt over his criminal behavior it was amazing. There are many more great scenes from Monster but I can't list them all.

In conclusion, it's a good show, but not one of the best because of the moments of unrealistic and seemingly forced plot that is too hard to believe and the need for more character development, but it's still good.

Queen Resa Aug 04 2016 7:30 am After watching ep 38 I can't but wonder if DGW really loves OSH, love I believe is not selfish and doesn't have ulterior motive, on the other hand it is kind and selfless, I feel DGW is obsessed with OSH, if not he wouldn't have cooked up the plan of OSH meeting KGT knowing he had a bullet in his head. He planned the whole thing, true love isn't like that, anyway it's all good because true love will always prevail. Reading previous comments I noticed something Pyoyang is a fan of DGW, he has been rooting for him, now I understand the reason for his statements, he is already biased.

We ALL know who OSY is going to end up with in the end. The poster above that shows the Lead Actor & Lead Actress is a DEAD GIVEAWAY how this drama gonna end. So there NEVER was any contest between DGW & KGT the moment we saw the trailer opening. It’s a 100% predictable like ALL Korean drama series.

The truth is what we like to see is the plot advances and intrigue scenarios & most of all, the entire well balanced love struggle between 1st Lead actor & 2nd Lead Actor is written brilliantly. For the first time in these love triangle drama, the 2nd lead actor is fighting on a fair ground, toe to toe with the 1st lead actor by showing strong reasons for both to fight for. One who has a strong Past together with OSY and the other has a strong Devotion toward OSY. Up until now I have nothing but compliments for the writer & director for making the audience have to take side between the two actors. But whether the writer/director decides to take this to the next level is something new in uncharted water breaking all the old tradition in drama. To have 2 actors compete with all their acting skills, how they drawn emotion from the audience, how they create their chemistry with the lead actress, let all that be the deciding factor on the drama ending. In this case if DGW comes out triumphant over OSY which has NEVER been done in ANY drama. It shows that the actors have to compete in real, encouraging them to do better as the script is depending on their capabilities, to decide who will be pair with the lead actress. That would be the birth of a NEW era in Korean drama and then the story itself would be Unforgettable...

I can't help but to count all the GOOD things you've done for OSY, which I also count Kang Gi Tan deeds toward her. These point are base on everything they both did for OSY, including all small things! (e.g I even count when KGT still became Guk Cheol with the necklace, etc etc !!!) The result by far , drum-roll please.. KGT score with 24 good deeds toward OSY. DGW score with 33 good deeds toward OSY (almost all of them behind OSY back without her knowing it) In reverse OSY also did nice thing for them, which I also count. Drumroll please..... OSY score with 21 good deeds toward KGT (some of it are big sacrifices that involve her family as well) OSY score with 7 good deeds toward DGW (7 is consider a lot since the past 2 episodes *31-32* relationship is improved. I count her nice comment toward DGW and even the patjuk thingy also included!) Now this DGW character GOTTA be one of the most miserable third party love story that I've ever encounter in the history of korean drama..seriously. OMG writer...do something..

I have seen Kang Ji-Hwan in Big Man which I found his acting is great. This drama is great too. Love all the young actress.

Lee El got the oriental look in this drama which I like. Jo Bo-Ah is bitchy but she got her soft side. She is sweet if not so arrogant.

Always anticipate for the next episode. Lengthy but not boring.

At this very point my main interest only between Oh Seo Yeon & Do Gun Woo relationship since I like their chemistry better then with the main actor Kang Gi Tan. Their love journey would spark my interest more then the revenge tbh >.< Why? I think K & OSY relationship will be much more predictable, lost memory but endup fall in love anyway blabla. Where DGW have to actually earn OSY and the writer would have to come up with a really good reason how OSY can fall for DGW (ahh how romantic) I wish this drama will take a different path where the likeable character (Do Gun Woo) who "suppose to lose in the end" gets happy end as well (gets the girl and company) and the main guy K gets decent ending as well (hey whats wrong with Sung Ae, she's perfect!). If Im gonna watch 50 long episodes for ruin one person life as might as well make the rest endup happy including the audience.

Of course this is just a made up tv series to make them have all the evidences against t9. Seriously, if this is in reality, no one would sacrifice a hard work job in a big company, I believe people in these days would think of themselves first especially if they have a sick sibling that they need to raise.

As much as I want the show to end faster or rather have small number of episodes, i think the person behind this drama made a right choice to make it longer. If you really follow thru the episodes there are that small puzzle here and there trying to explain how the story could end.. Furthermore each episode has it comedic one li er now and then which breaks the ice too cause if we were too intense to the story I think I might be crazy too hahaha!

The plot is moving at good pace, making sense and most importantly there are always something to tell with a good reason behind it. Is not boring despite reaching episode 20 where the plot is still young. Is not the kind of story that can end in 20 episodes or less. Because with a short time frame with will make the story cut out and too many thing left behind unexplained. Up til now the writer seems to aim for advance plot with battle of wits between the characters. I recommend this drama, bear it until episode 5, then you might actually find this is worth to watch and rather enjoy it, my 2 cents.

Sukma May 08 2016 5:55 am This drama just compiled of best antagonist cast ever. Kanggjihwan melting my heart as always, sung yuri fun to watch, already liking her since feast of the gods. Ki woong acted so good made me wanna punch his face lol. And soohyun too pretty and perfect to be a woman lol. does she the one who in Avenger as doctor? Every cast just great, I just can't get why it has low ratings despite its interesting plot.

The story is messy, some things overexposed, the development of the relationship of the couple supposedly "funny"? But rather bland ... I'm too demanding? .... Well, maybe it has not yet improved .. :)

It'll be totally exhausting for him to shoot this drama simutenously with Cheese in a trap.. But i like Kang Ji Hwan.. To me he's a really good actor and i had watched a few of his dramas before so i dont really have any objections about him be casted in.. Byt if Hwang Jung Eum decline this i probably not going to watch this drama:(
