Han Jung-Hyun (Ji Jin-Hee) is an agent of the NIS (National Intelligence Service). While he studied at the police university, he was selected by the NIS. He then worked on a top secret case and he met Choi Yeon-Soo (Kim Hyun-Joo). Using his alias, he fell in love with her and they eventually married. Meanwhile, Choi Yeon-Soo works as a civil-rights lawyer who seeks justice and the truth. She is nominated for the Chief of the Civil Servant Corruption Investigation Unit. Because of her nomination, her husband's true identity becomes involved in an uncontrollable situation.

Lovely Happiness Dec 16 2025 3:22 am Kim Hyun Joo is always a delight to watch. Wish this drama had more intimate scenes b/w the wife and husband. But I understand this was filmed during covid. Story-wise, it's good, but not particularly exhilarating. Wish there was more into the script. Acting-wise, excellent, especially the main villain who was really scary. Saranghae Kim Hyun Joo.

Do not expect top notch script. You might get frustrated how stupid some of the "secret agent" act time to time. It's like they are idiots.

Also people, if you get into some of the Secret Service Agents, do make Copy of your findings. Agents in this show never makes copy of their documents, recordings and they just lost it like stupid.

I almost dropped at some points. I thought I should finish. I'd give 6 out of 10.

Xxx Mar 09 2025 3:01 am Not for the faint hearted. This series involves heavy politics and corruption. If you want as easy storyline that favors your imagination, then this might not be for you.

Definitely one of the most stressful dramas i have ever watched. The amount of profanities i shouted in my mind was probably the most unforgettable moments i got here. The two leads deserve more for their happy ending but i understand that the writers still wanted to keep it realistic. I still remember that one scene in the building in ep. 7 that almost gave me a heart attack lol.

The chemistry of their teenage counterparts was also the sweetest and has more chemistry than the adults. Nevertheless, the two main leads are still known for being love team ever since, this is already i think their 3rd drama being together.

Hands down for my most hated villain but loved actor when he's a protagonist - Heo Joon Ho! He's such an icon whether his charater is good or bad. Also, i noticed so many familiar faces here especially the ones who are always the bad guys.

Respect Nov 29 2024 7:00 pm Heo Joon Ho was scary as a villain. Great job! Chemistry between leads was lovely. Even without kissing scenes, they seemed to be so natural acting wife and husband. Kim Hyun Joo's subtle acting was also very good. She's simply one of the greatest actresses. I liked her acting style -- no overacting, her eyes can convey so much emotions. Ji Jin Hee could have used more action scenes. I was looking forward to seeing him do stunts, but they did not show much. This could have been really great and thrilling if they added cool action. Still, good job. Worth watching. Loved the family scenes.

Park Min Jul 16 2023 6:59 am It took forever before the story started progressing. It could've been easily condensed down to 7-8 episodes without sacrificing anything. The amount of plot convinces was unbelievable. A common example is whenever a piece of information is about to be revealed, it magically get sabotaged in the most blatant way there is. Throughout the entire drama it felt it was building towards something big but it never got there and the resolution of the culprits was underwhelming anyway. The drama in general was riddled with all kind of problems but the big cast was pulling it up so damn hard.

God, the whole drama, i was on the edge of my seat. i was just so thrilled!!! someone can offer me the exact same plot and i would still take it. nothing goes wrong with married couple for decades who finds out one of them has been lying about their identity plus action, action, and action!!! and both the young version and old version of the leads' chemistry, just hands down. season 2 can have the people of korea petitioning for yeon soo to come back as the CIO director because the new one's rotten, then she gets into trouble as she fights high officials, and here's suk gyu with his gun and guns (arms) backing her up. heh, i will never get sick of it.

Via RT Jun 25 2021 7:15 am Fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat drama. Not the typical and overly predictable mainstream drama.

I was expecting a tight plot and exciting scenes all throughout. But there were a few unnecessary dialogues which dragged the story. It would have been better if there were more heart-stopping scenes and action. Overall, the narrative and plot are compelling. And I personally prefer this version over the original.

- Ji Jin-Hee has once again proven his skills and versatility, switching from a doting house husband and father to a keen and ingenious ex-undercover agent.

His portrayal showed the difference of character between the present Han Jung-Hyun and present Lee Suk-Kyu though they are one and the same person.

Though he is dubbed as the "melo-king", action is not something new to him as he has starred in action films before. He even gave insights in fight choreography and helped fellow actors.

I love this drama because of his character, and his action / suspense scenes.

- Kim Hyun-Joo. I enjoyed her other dramas with Ji Jin-Hee "Ms. Kim's Million Dollar Quest" and they were both exceptional in "I Have a Lover".

But I agree with other objective observations that her performance in this drama was lacking.

Choi Yeon-Soo is a fearless, idealistic lawyer and becoming the first chief of Corruption Investigation for high ranking officials -- depicts an exciting and bold character but her acting was flat and lifeless.

It is very evident especially when you juxtapose it with the young Choi Yeon-Soo (Han Sun-Hwa).

- Han Sun-Hwa's portrayal was on-point; she was brazen. full of character.

I don't know what happened with Kim Hyun-Joo. Even when she's delivering power words / script, she looked tired and her performance appeared tired. There were some convincing acting but mostly they were dull. She often looked like she needed some rest after a tedious day of work.

- But the performances of other main cast and supporting cast overshadow those, plus a gripping storyline make this drama on the must-watch list.

No wonder, I don't know any of her dramas, except this one and the previous drama with Ji Jin Hee. Ji Jin Hee carried the drama with the help of the reliable supporting stars. That actress should not be a lead star. She's just suited for supporting roles!

The male character works at the NIS, it's equivalent to CIA in the US, that's why he was able to manufactured a new life under an assumed name. Also, he gave up being a spy right after they got married since originally his mission was to infiltrate Kim Tae-Yeol's circle. Even the guy who recruited him to NIS said that things went downside because of his love to Choi Yeon-Soo.

Second, this is the second drama already of Kim Hyun-Joo and Ji Jin-Hee. The fact that both leads were contracted again to lead a series means that there's a chemistry between the two.

Lastly, to be in a relationship and married to someone for 20 years, let alone made a family with, and just discovering that the man whom your kids call as dad/father, is shocking and traumatizing for anyone. That's a natural human reaction, especially for a wife who described her partner as a loving father and a very devoted husband. And to say that 'she can't make a difference between private life and professional life' is kinda harsh and unfair because one, of what I mentioned above, and two, his husband was part of the case she's handling herself. That's the main reason why she can't put a wedge on her private affairs from her professional life.

Someone saying here that the actress is not popular in SK...you are very much mistaken. Or maybe you are used to actresses who act cute and all...Kim Hyun Joo is a respected and awarded actress. Ji Jin Hee have great chemistry with Kim Hyun Joo, bringing their characters so believable. In fact as I recall Ji Jin Hee even mentioned in one of his interviews that the actress he'd want to work with again even years after is Ms. Kim Hyun Joo.

Turns out your husband's name is a fake, your children had fake last name, you think you know everything about your partner, etc. For sure you need time to digest it all. Choi yeon soo is just being a real human being. No human being are okay with all that.

sphkorea Jun 06 2021 5:11 pm I do love the chemistry of the couple, and I think it was intended by the casting crew to have the two main characters different in personality given the kind of role that they are portraying -- the male is a spy and a devoted husband, while the female carries a strong personality being a defender of the oppressor. But their commonality as a loving parents made them a perfect couple for this story. Though I may agree that the female lead may not be as famous as the others outside SK (maybe because of her age), but from my point of view, she's a good actress and she carried her role well. It's sad to know though that we got 2 episodes left next week. Nevertheless, would love to see a season 2 of this drama if JTBC chooses to continue and make their own sequel.

The character Choi Yeon-Soo doesn't fit with the character Han Jung-Hyu at all, and the actress doesn't match with the main male actor. Choi Yeon-Soo is or stubborn or stupid, one of the two or maybe both. Knowing that her husband was an ex-spy, but she is not curious about the information her husband can give to her. Her attitude is incomprehensible. Her movements are so slow that she gives the impression she sleeps in her shoes. As I said in another comment, she is from another drama she doesn't belong here.

I wonder why he is paired again with Kim Hyun Joo. They don't have chemistry. Ji Jin Hee is just good at acting and in charge of their scenes. I wish to see him with exciting stars.

Kay Jun 05 2021 11:59 am Undercover is a must watch! The second half of this drama especially, it has been amazing so far. Can't believe next week is the final 2 episodes alreaddy :( Especially the twist at the end of episode 14, just WOW really didn't see it coming.

I must say I'm really impressed with the lineup of good actors in this drama, especially Kim Hyun Joo, she pulls off emotional scenes really well. I love how for once its a gender role reversal, with a strong female lead that is the head of the household taking on a big government role as the head of CIO, with a loving husband taking care of the kids (although it is discovered he has a hidden identity), and the family dynamics with teenage kids, one who is autistic, is a nice addition too. Really good portrayal of a realistic family relationship and the turmoil Yeon Soo goes through as she uncovers Jung Hyun's true identity.

Some might think the drama in the middle was slow paced, but I think it was a good buildup like what Ava commented below, about the reality of Yeon Soo realizing her husband has been living using a different person's name all these while... Its not an easy thing to accept overnight, and also she took so long to discover because its natural given they have lead a seemingly perfect life together for 30 plus years, and he has been the perfect stay-at-home husband, cooking and taking care of his kids, why would she have any reason to suspect him? Much less his role as an ex NIS agent?

Also the OSTs for Undercover have been reallyyy good too! For me OSTs matters a lot, good OSTs help bring up certain moods in the drama. My personal favorites are the 2 english OSTs, "Where are You" by Katie and "Under the Lonely Sky" by Safina K. Also the female-male duet song " On a Secluded Road" by Sondia and Kim Jun Hui, really hits right with the feelings.

Ava May 30 2021 11:05 am As for me, it's not too exaggerated nor unnatural. In reality, that's one of the ways some people would react. I would react just like her, too, if I'm in her shoes.

Besides, don't you know from watching it in previous episodes that she's still doesn't know a lot about him because he's been lying and hiding a lot of things from her until the day she knew a lot about his true self (after 20 years)?

In fact, the longer we do not know about someone who is close to us, the more it hurts us and the more our reactions would be if suddenly we happened to know about his / her true self or life. We'll get angrier & could get a little bit scared of him / her too.

ps: In reality, some people still do not know a lot about their spouse(s) even though they have been living since a long time ago like 20 years or more that it finally led them to get divorced.

Great acting from the cast, especially Ji Jin-hee. His scenes visiting his father in the nursing home are very heartbreaking, while his action scenes are riveting and exciting. He really is a very talented versatile actor.

The only disappointing thing is that this is not on Netflix, Viki, Viu.

ABC May 17 2021 12:32 am They are so skillful at choosing the younger versions of the cast. It's amazing. When they showed the younger version of Go Yoon-Joo, I had in my mind who the adult version would be, and it's really her.

I am really enjoying the drama, and so grateful someone is doing the hard work of transcribing the hard-coded sub into soft-sub, although some people complain because it does take longer than usual, I really appreciate it.

And finally seeing Ji Jin Hee so fit and doing action scenes is cool. He looked too thin in the last dramas I've seen him in lately.

I’d like to know why he had to leave his father behind and didn’t have even acknowledge him when his father saw him with his wife and kids. Such a very sad and tragic story between a father a son to be separated and then reunited when the father is already suffering dementia

I wish this was on nerflix or viu, its kinda hard to find the website to watch this.

Acting is on point, the young actiors resemble the older main actors and the flow of the episodes are great! I can see why jTBC chose to remake BBC's Doctor Foster (as The World of the Married), but Undercover is a much less obvious choice. In any case, I'm really looking forward to seeing Ji Jin-hee as the less than 100% upright male character. As for Kim Hyun-joo -- she was fabulous as the hard-bitten yet traumatised lawyer in Watcher, and I can't wait to see her playing another brilliant, complex mature woman.
