Soo-Jin (Song Ji-Hyo) is a producer at a film production company. Her company decides to make a film based on a popular webcomic by Myeong-Soo’s (Byun Yo-Han). The webcomic is about Myeong-Soo's ex-girlfriends. It just so happens, Soo-Jin is also an ex-girlfriend of Myeong-Soo. Now, Soo-Jin has to interact with her ex-boyfriend and his 3 ex-girlfriends: Hwa-Young (Lee Yoon-Ji), Ji-A (Jang Ji-Eun) and Ra-Ra (Hwa Young).

"Ex-Girlfriends Club" takes over tvN's Fri & Sat 20:30 time slot previously occupied by "Super Daddy Yul” and followed by "Oh My Ghost" on July 3, 2015.
First script reading took place mid-March, 2015 at CJ E&M Center in Sangam-dong, Seoul, South Korea.

Evelyn Jul 29 2018 2:43 pm I’m impressed. Everybody in the comments keeps parroting the same “simple storyline” opinion, but there’s much more to this drama imo. The plot is unique, sure, but the execution was very weak. They delved into the relationship very fast, and it got tiring too quickly. iThe three ex-girlfriends were the most annoying characters that I had seen in a while, and the humor was borderline cringy and embarrassing. Was very promising, however, sadly was a disappointment for me.

The interaction among characters is good, the acting of each cast is good and the drama do not exaggerate the problems arise. But, the plot is quiet messy. There are some necessary explanation (of the story) which is excluded in the drama. In addition, the story do not really focus on a certain point which make me difficult to understand the story itself. Regardless to the weaknesses presented, this drama is still worth to watch ?

In my opinion, the score is 7/10

Angel Sep 07 2017 1:40 am I love this drama so much! Simple storyline but it could keep you watch till the end. Actors and actreeses act is so damn good! They really had the emotions and translate it well to the audience. It's hilarious, heart warming but lacking in some point... i do still feel something is missing and somewhat boring. Too bad. Because the acting of the stars were already good. Still, i will recommend this dramas :) and i do really love Byun Yo Han so much! In every characters he played, he always excel. Daebak!

I wrote my last review when I was only on episode 3. Now that I got to watch more episodes. I take back what I said. It's not boring. Its actually f*cking hilarious. Ji Hyo's comedy here is super hilarious. I say it's really worth the watch.

bvblw Jun 11 2017 6:59 am I love Song Ji Hyo unnie so much and she's basically my favorite actress even though I only watched 2 of her films, Frozen Flower and Wishing Stairs; I still love her anyway mainly because of her personality and she's brave enough to not use filter with her words on Running Man. Not most actresses can be brave enough to use at least a few profanities here and there against the other members. But since we're talking about this drama, I'll move on to it. After watching a few of her films and I akso watched 1 of her dramas, I noticed how professional she really is but behind all that you'll learn to love her more. This drama honestly isn't one of the best dramas I have warched. I just watched it because of unnie. But in all honesty, the drama itself has a unique plot. These days I barely see unique plots that is not fantasy. The only problem here is that there are 3 other females hanging around the male lead but that's the point of the title and without them the drama itself will be more boring than it is. So bear with it. For me the drama would be 6/10 because the story itself is simple but very unique and the main couple looks cute together. I wish Song Ji Hyo will gain more success in her upcoming dramas and films. She needs recognition more than anyone in the world.

ikemen Oct 08 2016 1:05 am Reading the comments really make me have to put my thought in. The drama is very dramatic, it is the point. What can be worse if you watch a drama and dont feel like one? Like how you compare foreign comedy with Asian sits-com? Or back to 2003 with the melodrama and demand a great painfully long plot to happen? I, myself, think this drama is about an idea of situations, where it brings the "harem" up to Korean dramas. To be honest, this is creatively heart-catching to just hear the title itself and see the poster. Ive watched uncounted number of K-dramas from all times and this drama makes me have to pause and save for the next day so the fun is doubled and the length is extended. 12 episodes is a cut-off but at least they didnt ruin it by plotting longer. Like Ji Ah's memory, let keep this drama a sweet thing in mind so you can rewatch with friends. I really love the casts and was surprised of "Han Suk Yool" playing the hero! I really fall for Ji Ah but in love with Soo Jin's smile... Its a bad idea but I want to be this Myeong Soo guy one day.

yohana Jul 25 2016 9:48 pm agree with @grace the storyline is so simple, but that's the point even with the simple story this drama can make the audience feel the emotions from the character. for me honestly, the way byun yohan and song ji hyo act as a couple make my heart tickles and smiling so wide. the story is real and it happens around us, right.. btw, Byun yo han is such a great actor. can't wait to look his next project

Lots of funny scenes and for me it is appealing. It really is worth watching :D but if you like hard core dramas or rom-coms, you should exclude it on your watch list. but if you like light ones, it is one of the great choice. This drama is jjang :D DAEBAK <3

Luna Jun 04 2016 3:12 am I absolutely love Song Ji Hyo. No matter how bad the drama seemed to be, I just like everything she's in. I think she's such an underrated actress and just needs the good roles. I really liked this drama and was incredibly sad that they reduced the episodes to 12. By the end, I kinda felt that it was rushed and I didn't like that feeling of being rushed, but I understand why it turned out that way.

But there are so many weaknesses in Emergency Couple that even though the rating is good, for me it loses the appeal and I drop the show from my watch list.

ChroloQA Oct 11 2015 3:06 pm This drama faces the same 'problems' most koreans series face - the first half is fresh, extremely hilarious and very entertaining while after halftime it starts getting a little bit tiring (obviously because the relationship between the mains is getting the most attention and like usually it gets to several points where you think "OMG, say something, do something, act like you'd need to!" - but of course they won't ^^") I didn't finish yet, but right now I guess the shortening from 16 to 12 episodes wasn't a bad idea. Though it's great acting from the entire cast, I like every character in its own way!

Tang Aug 11 2015 7:19 pm yes, i agreed this drama storyline is flat but maybe it is flat because they cut 4 episodes after 6-8 ep already aired in TV. They have to cut many scenes and adjust the script to make it short from 16 ep to 12 ep in rash.

I definitely don't know why they cut 4 episodes. it is between EGC got low rating or Lee Yon Ji's pregnant news.

I'm waiting this drama so bad, but finally I disappointed with the story line... it's not because the chemistry the two of them, but the story was flat... Ilove the cast, especially song ji hyo her acting was the most realistic and natural out of the cast, her beauty the most captivating and stunning, she created a character that was sooo easy to relate too, and even when she was dressed in plain close she looked absolutely stunning, her smile is a total killer, and her expressions at times is soo on point she nailed it, and once again proved that she is a femme fetale, even though this drama was quite innocent, she made it quite addicting. I hope to see this actress in more serious dark and passionate dramas, she totally has thelooks the voice, and knows how to flirt and seduce when it's needed, perfect seductress!

slee Jul 08 2015 11:44 am Love this drama! Simple story that emphasizes realistics moments and emotions in love. These type of stories would not have worked without some really talented acting. The cast is excellent, each showcasing their own character amazingly and have such natural chemistry with each other. The male lead here has a strong potential to be very popular. Ji-Hyo as usual has wonderful expressions and a talented actress, although she used to look healthier and less haggard. Two thumbs up frm me.

Hats99 Jun 25 2015 10:04 am Are realistic slice-of-life stories incredibly rare in Korea or something? Judging by the substantial amount of comments calling this drama "flat" because people were expecting some sort of grand climax, the answer would be yes. Still, if people didn't enjoy it for those reasons, then we must have been watching two different shows because this genuine and sweet romantic comedy STILL has me floating with the fuzzies a week after the last episode aired. I've rewatched it three times already!

I'm also very impressed with Byun Yo-Han. Saw clips of him in Misaeng, but since I haven't seen the series in its entirety, I have yet to connect with his character there. He may not have the perfect looks, but damn that guy should patent his THE most infectious smile EVER. Even though I had reservations when watching the clip of the script reading session because he seemed a little too eager, those concerns were washed away the moment I saw the scene played out onscreen. An actor who can blur the lines of fiction and reality is a fearsome thing to behold. Definitely going to keep following his career track.

As one online reviewer was apt to notice, Ex-GF Club was never about the big things in life. Rather than having the story culminate with a confession or the couple getting together, we were treated to a fascinating narrative that was concerned with the relationship dynamics between every character. Not something new for Jdrama, but vastly new territory for Kdrama, so it felt fresh. The dialog was tongue-in-cheek and realistic. The cast of adorkably flawed adults had me bowling over with laughter.

I'm pretty used to the 10-12 epi format in Japanese dramas, so while the 4 episode cut seemed unncessary, it didn't bother me at all. Neither did Episode 1, which I felt did an awesome job at setting the tone and pace and establishing the principal characters.

My only complaint would be the occasionally awkward acting from Ji Hyo at certain parts in the beginning and the schizo editing in several parts. I think Ji Hyo's stint on Running Man does not allow her the time to explore herself as an actress. She's not terrible, but it took her quite some time to fully get into character. But when she finally did, boy did I fall for Soo Jin. Our Myeong Soo Jin couple is just too freaking adorable!

What I can't forgive though is the bad editing at parts...I honestly don't see the point in cutting back and forth so much in a given scene. I mean, is it really necessary to capture EVERY reaction? It doesn't always happen, but it's often enough to make me dizzy.

Overall, this is a gem of a kdrama. Wonderful script, cast chemistry, and more than enough depth to make it replay worthy. If I watch anything Korean, it's mostly films, so my profile for these types of shows are pretty slim. I'm glad Song Ji-Hyo has the immense star power that she does because honestly I went into this curious about her. Guess I lucked out because this drama had me psyched beyond words.

I prefer that Misaeng dude. That was what made me become a fan of him in the first place. I want to see Yo Han in a more serious type of character but has some humour or cute side to him.

They had a great cast, and i know that there is so much more to the story. And i am actually waiting for the premier night of the movie and also more of the hwayoung and youngjae couple, how they fix their relationship, like that. UGH! And also clap clap to BYUN YO HAN! such a great acting, this is the first time i have seen him acting ( IM GONNA WATCH MISAENG :) ). He did a good job, he fits the role perfectly. Cutting it down to 12 ep did make the script a little haywire bc I guess they had to rush. Nevertheless, it's very funny and witty and makes you want to fall in love too.

EXGFCLUBLOVER Jun 18 2015 5:19 am Honestly, people who do not enjoy this story is just downright skeptical. It's fresh in the kdramaland, and being a very avid fan of all genres of kdramas (well, my fav would definitely be romcom), this one is different. Ive watched so many dramas throughout my life and most of them have a common plot and strategy to emphasize the plot. There are too many dramas which clearly tries to put all the eccentric qualities into the male lead's character and we're left with a boring second lead which does nothing but to just stand there and help the girl while he swallows whatever feelings that he has. Also, take School 2015 for an example, the plot has potential to shine as it does reflect the situation in school. But as expected also, the scriptwriters developed a strong friendship between Tae Kwang and Eun Bi only to let her end up with Yi An. Thing is, there's no spark to their relationship plus they have boring scenes yet due to the rule that the first lead must get, hence he gets the girl but it contradicts with the plot. But to me, EGC is different. The plot is written lightly, so taking that into account obviously the dynamic of their relationship would not be like other makjjang dramas. EGC is beautifully conveyed, though there are flaws, those flaws make this show a perfect one. In this drama, we were shown how two very ordinary people fall in love, and how beautiful their love is despite being.... well ordinary people. In kdrama, we were always shown how a chaebol falls in love but honestly in real life, how many of us are actually dating a chaebol? This drama is a depiction of reality. How people like each other and they don't have the courage to say it for the first time, and how friendship grows apart, and how very different people can just end up becoming friends (referring to Rara, Jin Ah and Hwa Yeong here). Unlike other dramas where they strongly try to shift the viewers' attention to the main lead, this drama gives the second lead a chance by trying to actually sort of fight for what he wants, and despite when he gave up on Soo Jin, there was still lingering feelings (Remember the part Soo Jin acted all aegyo and he couldnt stand it and he gave in to what she asked). In real life too I believe, when you give up on someone, it takes time, and the drama has definitely succeeded in showing that. On the other hand, Myeong Soo and Soo Jin, let's not get into that. They're just too adorable together it's making me diabetic. Sorry for this long rant, I just hope that people would give this drama a chance. Sometimes, all we need is simplicity in a drama. Take a break from watching makjjang and give this drama a shot!! I LOVE YOU EGC CAST!

Wish to see them more often in another romatic comedy kdrama. fighting!!

ingukie Jun 15 2015 6:34 pm they had a very good concept-ex girlfriends become your friend., but somehow, the script is not well develop, i think. in early episodes, i had a very good feeling about the character development, but it is quite flat toward the halfway of the drama. the climax was not much impact to me. But, this drama full of sweet and laughter scenes and the combination of actors was also satisfying. A nice rom-com drama. 3/5

Ammy Jun 15 2015 2:52 pm whoah. im kinda shocked at the comments where people who said this is boring. It's not boring, it's REALISTIC. Which is why so many people fell in love with the drama. It's not your typical korean drama with drama and fights going back and forth. It's a feel good drama that expresses romance and comedy in a nostalgic realistic way.

If you're looking for something different, and taking a break from the usual typical kdrama, watch this! It's absolutely wonderful and you wont regret it.

Great Cast, Nostalgic and Refreshing Storyline, and Beautiful Soundtrack :)

i think Do Sang-Woo a bit look like Joo Sang-Wook, especially when he smile. And Hwa Young (Ra Ra) flash look like Park Shin-hye.

I am still grateful to this drama to have got to know the adorable Jang Ji Eun, my new crush, and to have had the chance to see the new life of Hwa Young, surprisingly good in a role that I hope will bring her a lot of work in the future. Great performance from Lee Yoon Ji too, to whom go my best wishes for her next role in the real life.

Camille W Jun 14 2015 3:23 am I feel like the fact that ExGC is over hasn't become real to me yet. This show was a joy ride. It was different from the usual. It was so special in this way. I became so attached to it.

Kudos to the the new writer. The writing, characters and pacing were just right, tho the cut affected the narrative. The show still retained its feel. That's smthg that Surplus Princess didn't do. I won't forget this show. Its my second fave after KMHM this year. Sarangheyo ExGC! Hopefully someone tells the cast and crew how amazing we thought of them and how appreciative we are of their hard work.

I think they shouldn't have placed Byun Yo Han as the lead so fast as he is still a novice and people are just starting to get to know him as that cool center parting hair dude from Misaeng. That impact that he did in Misaeng has totally been washed away when he played this dude in Ex Gf Club.

While the pace sped up the show still felt like itself, tho I believe that ep 9 was basically a combination of two eps. I also heard on Soompi that the ratings went up to 0.9 +. So this is good. This drama's beginning was already a little weak and did not have that great impact that Emergency Couple brought. The storyline and plot in overall was weak as well. The chemistry between Ji Hyo and Byun Yo Han was good but was not as great as Ji Hyo and Jin Hyuk was in Emergency Couple where it had gotten so popular and hyped up that they both even went for a fanmeet in different countries! I really like Emergency Couple drama a lot.

Now, lately, only the dramas where the male MC is a character with Prince syndrome, rich or not, can success with the audience. With rare exceptions, we have an MC out this rule in a successful drama. I think the old formula rich boy poor girl still goes for producers ... I miss dramas like I'm Sam and That Fool ...

I had to make an effort to decide to go thru episodes 3/4, when the drama started to be interesting, especially thanks to the ex-gfs, whose performance was worth the completion of the original 16 episodes. Even if the script is not perfect, the cast made this drama better than most of those currently airing.

It is SO FUNNY, and realistic, and the female characters aren't annoying and have strong personalities (IMO). There's a storyline that isn't boring for me, and I'm really disappointed it will end soon. I think I fell for Myung soo's smile *fangirls* along the way and his personality became one of my ideals. This will forever be a memorable drama for me, and definitely is worth the wait (for the next episode) and watch. Ex-girlfriend Club fighting!

Camille W Jun 01 2015 6:21 pm The ratings aren't impressive by a long shot unfortunately. BUT they went up for ep 8. Ep 7 got a 0.64 but ep 8 got a 0.81 (AGB Nielson). Guess a kiss is still the best way to hike up ratings, huh? The trend with these eps is that the second eps usually fare better. Take for example eps 3 (0.65) vs ep 4 (0.72), or ep 5 (0.70) vs ep 6 (0.88). Right now I don't really care abt the ratings cuz im having tonnes of fun. But u know that syndrome where u just have to check anyway? And so I'm bummed for my drama :(. Its sad that other less awesome dramas (*cough* Producer*cough*) are getting the attention. But then EGC is on pay-to-air tv right so....yh. But its weird cuz strangely some of my fave dramas this year were from pay-air like Ho Gu's Love and Falling For Innocence. Thus, u'd think that Koreans would have more faith in these channels. Idk abt the general populace but we netizens are surely enjoying ourselves here.

Myungsoo's character development also surprised me. I thought that he was just this kind of guy who naturally got a silver tongue made for women and unconsciously swoon the girls because of his attitude. Turns out that he's really a soft-hearted person with a real thoughtful intention who knows when to sacrifice or stand up for the person who is important for him. Byun Yo Han also did a really good job on portraying myungsoo's sincerity for soojin, i just cant asdfgh ;~;. I'm looking forward to how this drama will show ms's past with the ex-girlfriends.

Isn't it director company? i am a bit confused, this drama won't going with 3 guy chasing after one girl right? though i love three of them. they have pros and cons. but ideally speaking, director company who is now Hwa Young finance is the most perfect. but a bit boring to be a main lead. ex-girlfriends are hillarious i can't even. they are annoyingly hillarious. and doesn't mean anything harmful. Na Ji Ah is the most interesting. A cool girl outside but vulnerable inside. ofcourse three of them kind of manipulative, but they did support MS in their other way and want MS succeed in his life.

I also like that everyone in this drama doesn't hold a grudge for a long time. and i don't need to say i am glad that SJH pick this drama. i am not really follow running man, but i do like seeing her on screen. she's a bit awkward in a few scene, but she nailed comedic and sorrowful acting. I want to see her in mellow drama later. but a great romcom like this doesn't hurt either.

Time isn't wasted. Granted, the 2 mins of intro was unneccessary. But the chem? Its so there! I mean the OTP aren't really together but they have such great rapport. Im really intrigued abt Myeung Soo's feelings for Soo Jin. Is he starting to feel something? He seems to be in love with Soo Jin and not even know it.

K May 17 2015 2:55 am I'm obsessed!! Also I think there is more to the SJxMS history then we as the audience know. At least probably from MS' point of view. So far all the cast have been great and you can tell they are all having fun with the fight scenes!! I highly recommend it if you want to watch a fun rom-com with a great cast! Just another reason to look forward to the weekends!

Well, she's the reason why I watched this drama. And boy, I really did the right thing after all. This drama is funny as hell!! :D It's absolutely biased, but I just didn't like what Myeong-Soo did to Soo-Jin. WTH? gave the wrong signals and treated her like that? ugh. I just wish there is some other guy for Soo-Jin, so Myeong-Soo could be the green-eyed monster -,- that's all, looking forward for the next episodes! :)

sara May 11 2015 12:32 am emergency couple was boring??? i guess u might wanna check its page on asian wiki and see its rating and its reviews, but I have to say it took me 3 episode to get hooked up to the show, after that it picked up really well and its one of the best rom-com out there.

Mary May 08 2015 9:38 pm I simply adore this actress, her acting always feels so sincere and real and somehow easy to relate to. that aside she is naturally elegant in her way, and is a really beautiful woman. I love how she is able to portray her character so precisely, making the viewer emotionelly envolved too. that's a skill only few actresses have and she is one of them, I loved her in emergency couple and I adore her in ex-girlfriend club.
