Lee Hwa-Sun (Kim Ok-Vin) is a detective at the regional investigation unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency. She receives a phone call from the person who murdered her husband. Lee Hwa-Sun then travels to Muji City. There, people inhale a mysterious dark smoke and turn into monsters. The residents in Muji City become terrified. Lee Hwa-Sun struggles to save people there and she also chases after her husband's murderer.

Meanwhile, Yoo Tae-Han (Lee Jun-Hyuk) has lived in Muji City all of his life. He once worked as a detective, but he had to quit because of a case. He now works as a wrecker driver. His still has his strong of justice, while he is also easy going and a joker. Yoo Tae-Han now faces his city falling into chaos because of the dark smoke that causes people to turn into monsters. He joins Lee Hwa-Sun to save people in Muji City.

hihi Jan 23 2025 9:34 am I watched the drama for JunHyuk, but his role throughout the drama was really not outstanding, everything was done by the female lead, he just ran, held the axe, and frowned whenever something happened. The female lead held a gun but at least 6-7 times she dropped it. The plot would have been much simpler if they just made the disease spread and the survivors try to find a vaccine or a way to kill the host, I don't know why they intentionally added the spiritual element to make the drama really confusing. The child actors were really good, and I was sick of the police couple and his pregnant wife. She didn't do much except be overly scared and cry. Her acting was so bad. This type of drama should have quick beginning and ending , too much repetition of the past is boring.

Park Min Jul 09 2023 7:18 am It had a promising start but ended up being another incoherent and illogical mess just like its predecessors from the same genre. It would have been somewhat fine if they didn't go the sci-fi route and kept it pure mystery/horror with a strong emphasis on escaping the horrors instead of trying to explain it. Even with 12 episodes only it felt long because they didn't do a good job handling the mystery. The cast was fine but nothing special.

Yeruchii Aug 02 2022 11:37 pm This drama has good intentions but failed in execution. It's a cross between All Of Us Are Dead and Sweet Home. You'll see so much similarities with thoss 2 hit dramas. But what made this drama a disaplointment is the confusing editing. Even for me who's good at piecing scene fragments together, this one had me in limbo. I can't say it's bad, but it's not good either. If this was executed properly, no doubt this would be a massive hit.

P.S. That pregnant woman's acting is just hilarious. And I don't mean that in a good way. Same with that guy acting as her husband. They could have made someone else do the job.

I finished the drama and I really don't understand why it's very low ratings when the drama is very good to watch and all the cast have a very good performance. I don't understand also why it's not showing from Neflix or somewhere we can see it,this one is very good series also for me. it's very unfair for all members of this drama that their own show didn't become popular like other series. I'm gonna rate this series 10/10.

The school gal who always got bullied in school, the bad school director, the shaman, the older police officer and the gangster etc. At first I was wondering why they keep on showing certain 'supporting' cast with their 'boring' background/story but then later realised that they are actually rather important in the latter development of the story, especially the shaman and the school gal.

As for the reason for the monster to appear I'm okay for it Not to have any reason. I always watch a lot of KDrama fantasy genre and many/all of them do not have any explanation for the superpower the leads cast had or whatsoever, there isn't explanation on how or why the l ads could time travel or be connected to another person in another era through the phone or other devices. So I guess in Dark Hole, how the monster comes about / created isn't that important to me too. Lol.

Watched till the end and kinda dissapointed that there is no explanation or relevance about sun explotion, the green egg thingy in the wood from ep 1. The way they portrat it seem soooo important yet not relevant lol. Maybe if there is season 2 they will explain it or something idk.

Stephen King wrote the book and they made it into a movie. There was a lady just like the one in this drama but in this drama she is affected by a unknown force. I did enjoy this. It was well done by everyone. I was hoping that it would say where the monster came from. Like, space, underground, or somewhere else. Thanks for making this drama. I give it a 8 out of 10 rating?

Venice Jun 25 2021 8:11 pm I'm watching Episode 9 currently. I love the drama a lot actually and I don't know why it's so underrated. It doesn't really make sense tho, that how did Hwa Sun have so many bullets lol. But overall it's an amazing drama, I'm shipping Tae Han and Hwa Sun A Lot in the drama although I'm not sure if they will end up togther since this is not a romance drama. I also love the plot, it shows the reality, how selfish husband are when the world is about to end, just saving themselves and not trying to help others. However, I saw some people said that there are a lot of plot holes in the last episode. I really hope they can make a season 2 but I doubt there will be as the rating is so low. And please don't hate on them if there are a lot of plot holes, it's either there will be a season 2(which I highly doubt) OR the drama just wants us to imagine by ourselves. Most drama series/movies are cliffhangers and I know a lot of people hate it(including me) But maybe that's just their style. However, I really hope they will make a season 2 and I hope that this drama will become popular soon.

hihihello Jun 20 2021 9:24 am I love this drama. At first, I am not really sure how it's going to be and keep on wondering about the smoke and the "monster". However, as the story starts to deepen, I began to love it.

The message about humanity is so strong. There are a lot of "annoying" characters, but that's just how sinful humans are. We tend to think about ourselves and abandon others. So glad to see the selfless characters survive up until the end. I love the meaning behind it. <3

Il like the subtle romance between the two leads and the the relationship between the female detective and the little girl and Dong Rim too. It reminds me the relationship between Joel and Elie from The last of us. I don't know why this drama flopped in Korea like many good dramas overshadowed by the hyped but boring one but this drama is very good for me. It would be good to have another season.

Mew Jun 10 2021 2:13 pm Dark Hole is clearly, heavily plot influential from the American 98' movie "Phantoms". There is a LOT of similarities, and no, its not coincidence. Black goo, black smoke. Megalomaniac Entity, same motivations. etc. Check that movie, which is very underrated.

I watched "Dark Hole", and although it has its own world and ideas, the majority is taken from that movie, and I was watching the show, and constantly remembering that movie. This movie is almost, very almost, the same as Korean "City Hunter". (It has nothing to with anything of the source material ) In this case, although it is not said anywhere it was based on Dean Koontz's "Phantoms"... you have too much of the book's Ideas in this show.

The show itself... its not bad, i was enjoying it for the most part. there 2 super dumb writing parts in all 12 episodes (characters saying stupid things in such a facepalm reaction.......) The ending was good. I don't hope fro second season. This was these characters story, i liked them, and everything is closed. Finito. Although I welcome a Movie, as OCN did with "Bad guys". Other then that..... i am sick of cliffhangers on shows nowadays., the American trend. Please, South Korea, Dont do that. That's why I boycot netlfix korean shows.

irene Jun 07 2021 2:41 pm i really enjoyed this drama. it's worth binging on if you have nothing to watch. every character had their own charms and it was very interesting to see their character development esp after they met hwa-sun. however, as much as i liked it, the drama was a bit too dragged. they could've shortened the number of episodes to 8 or 10. and there were a handful of questions left unanswered. i rate this drama an 8/10 definitely recommending this one.

○ Jun 05 2021 10:31 am To the commenter who said all the villains in this drama is annoying. Stop it. Judging from your comment, it seems you're new to kdramas. If you've watched kdramas as early as 2007, you'd know how awfully annoying characters from those times were compared to the villains here. Also, to the other commenter who said that the shaman had awful acting skills. The fact that you wanted to b*** slap her means she's doing a great job playing the villain.

This series is decent. Kinda reminded me a bit of 'Sweet Home' (webtoon based series), a pinch of every other zombie films and a whole lot of 'The Mist' (American tv series).

I love how this series portrays how our far our human nature can turn, when life was normal and during a crisis. It was a question of whether who was more monstrous all along, the humans who killed and murdered for their own benefit or the actual monsters who was trying to kill them.

So far I'll give this movie a 6/10 score. It's a pretty decent series, try watching it.

I love this drama, if you're a Korean thriller/fantasy dramas, you will know that those type of drama are always slow pacing, and only reveal the main point at last or second last episode. You may find it complicated, but it will all clear in the end. This is not just a typical Zombie drama, they are not even Zombies, they are mutants who inhaled black smoke, those killed by the mutants didn't turned into mutants they just died. In Zombie movie, all the victims turned into a Zombie and this isn't the same. They are mutants who inhaled black smoke, and that smoke was controlled by a monster ( who isn't yet revealed) through one person.

Not exactly sure whether they are talking about zombies, aliens or the devil himself. The actress who played the shaman is annoying as heck. Poor acting, you just can't help but wanting to b**ch slap her throughout the entire drama. Overall, watch this if you have nothing better else to do if not don't bother wasting your time.

Zombie May 27 2021 12:17 pm Quite draggy. Seems to have to no progress even at the 8th episode. I was actually hoping them to unravel the mysterious dark hole by now but they keep on adding unnecessary scenes to the plots. The female MC seems to have illogically unlimited amount of bullets. All villain in this drama is just plain annoying - shaman, the bullies, the serial killer, the cult follower and more. Too many plot holes. No one seems to be preparing themselves against the zombies - too busy playing around, eating snacks at a freaking store (you should at least eat healthy meals while you can, duh!), no one is preparing strategy except for the male lead, wasting precious food eventhough it's limited at the school cafeteria, no one on watch duty and more. The amount of screentime for that Shaman need to be reduced.

Lovelyz May 12 2021 12:11 pm This show is supposed to be part of "OCN Dramatic Cinema". I don't know why they decide to change it, and make it aired on both OCN and tvN. I was wondering if this drama broadcast on OCN's primetime (sat-sun; 22.30) just like usual, maybe it will get a better rating because the audience only focus into one channel. But sometimes ratings doesn't reflects the quality of drama itself, this drama already caught my attention since the beginning, because it was written by Save Me and Stranger from Hell's writer, and the cast fit on their role. Looking foward for next episode. Please keep supporting them.

Coco rocha May 09 2021 11:56 am Is it just me or does this movie is about devil? Like the dark hole is the door to hell and the black smoke is actually the devil’s calling sth like that. It only attracts someone who has weak faith and when it attracts to someone the dark smoke (devil) put anger, fear, anxiety, and all those horrible stuff to the person’s mind. And they make people become criminals and monster just like the devil. Plus the black eyes which the devil has it. I’m confused. What’s the meaning behind the story, hopefully its good and not bringing people to the wrong way or closet to evil.

I've read the comment about a crossover from "Save Me" and I just remembered that Ahn Eun Jin's character in another OCN drama "Strangers from Hell" is also a police officer named So Jung Hwa. She is the colleague who helped Kim Ok Bin gain access to the crime scene. I had hoped for her continuous appearance in this show because I really like her (especially in Hospital Playlist) but I think it could be a cameo only. But still, OCN really is the best channel for me. Hehe. Always dark, thrilling, and mysterious dramas!!! I feel like none of the OCN dramas is boring.

kali May 02 2021 1:26 am almost didnt recognize kim ok vin. lets write a story, first meeting between producers and script writers...no need for compelling story line but it needs to have zombies and monsters, black smoke, shamans, female serial killer and the kitchen sink.

hito Apr 30 2021 11:42 pm This drama like The Mist film and drama based on Stephan King's novel. Instead of monsters and stuck in the mall, it zombies and maybe they will be stuck somewhere too. And they hallucinate when smelling the smoke, in The Mist's drama version they also hallucinate when entering the mist and seeing things they scare the most, then some religious cult believes it the wrath of God. Just my view from the first ep and trailers..

The black smoke, got into people and their eyes become black , after that they hear neagtive words that make them feel bad, angry and out of rage become like zombie. This like demon possesion from supernatural episode when the demon virus croatoan invade the city and people become agresive like zombie.

And the main lead wearing plaid and jacket, this like the winchester brothers style.

Is this series took inspiration from supernatural series that ended in 2020?

Either way eps 1 looks so good though Ill be waiting for the rest of the eps though.

And the main lead, kinda have dean winchester vibe lol.

Came here to check other dramas of Lee Joon oppa hoping to find more dramas of him being the lead and just saw this! And I can wait hehehehe.. I just hope they give more leading roles for Lee Joon.
